View Full Version : How awesome were the 80s!

I was thinking about this this arvo. While there are a lot of things about the 80s that we wish we could permanently erase from history, there were some absolutely fantastic bits of history that people still love today (hence the existence of this board).

The purpose of this thread is to discuss/bath in the nostalgia of those awesome things, share some gems that others might have missed and educate/laugh at those younger than us because they missed all this.

My first entry:

I was thinking today about all those awesome movies the 80s spat out. "They just don't make them like they used to!" is a phrase that is no truer than when applied to 80s movies. From comedies to martial arts, the 80s covered it all with a flair and style that today's movies lack.

The particular movie that triggered all this today was Gleaming The Cube. A skateboarding movie starring Christian Slater as a young rebel skateboarder whose adopted brother is murdered. So young Christian sets out to solve the crime with nothing but his smart arse attitude, frosted tips and his single kick skateboard! What could be better?!

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc88/Wrxus/9098c4e01e197441ec9dc0af5208b431.jpg

This movie actually features some pretty awesome skateboarding as the stunt guy was the world champion skateboarder at the time.

And that leads me into my next item: 80s style single kick skateboards. They were boats! They were large, heavy and ungainly. And not in the style of today's longboards. These things were the pinnacle of the sport in the day, but the only comparison was those penny boards that were really tiny. Kmart sold them by the thousands and it seemed every kid in Australia got one as standard issue. And for the REALLY cool kid, who was so lofty as to desire a skateboard that actually turned, there was even a version with wings!!! (Although you had to sit down on it).

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc88/Wrxus/45ed8cf07375e7a5edcc5ae927cd6f9d.jpg

Those were the days. I could go on but that's enough for now. Feel free to add your own items of awesome :D

Gleaming the Cube!!! I remember that movie, it was brilliant and as an 80's skate kid I loved it
I watched the Goonies with my daughter the other day, another staple of 80's brilliance

The 80's were indeed awesome because they gave us these two classics.

I miss the 80's so much! Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop. Movies just don't get made like that anymore. Not to mention the cartoons! Transformers, TMNT, Dino Riders, Alias the Jester, The Trapdoor... Man, I wish I was a kid again!

There's a TV show at the moment called "The Goldbergs" which set in the 80's. It just puts a smile on my face every ep with its 80's filled goodness ;)

And the quality of life just seemed better. Kids could actually go outside to play without parents wrapping them in bubblewrap. Kids were allowed to get dirty in the mud! Sure, Mum would chew us out when we came home with muddy clothes, but deep down she knew kids will be kids ;)

The world today needs more of the 80's! :p

Indeed. We don't have a movie star like Van Damme in this day and age. That guy pumped out some quality fighting movies and inspired dozens more that weren't so good :)

Another bit of childhood nostalgia was this little toy:

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc88/Wrxus/100toys76.jpg~original

Called a Glo Worm, is was a cuddly little thing that took 3x C cell batteries to power one tiny little incandescent bulb in its head that made it glow when you squeezed it. You could have it in any colour as long as it was green and they tended to get a bit warm. I loved mine. It went everywhere with me until it fell apart :(

My wife had one as well when she was a kid and my mother-in-law remembered my wife's many fond memories of it and recently tracked one down for my newborn son. The only example she could find was a MISB one in Argentina :) I might try to replace the bulb with an LED cluster for safety reasons before he can have it :)

EDIT: I'm not quite sure how but I noticed that the Glo Worm in that photo is managing, quite unintentionally I'm sure, to pull off a rather seductive pose :o

And who can remember going to an actual toy shop and they had toys you actually wanted and they even got new stock too. You could laybuy anything and it was okay. Even if it was just $10

You could play outside or ride a bike. You just had to be home by the time the street lights came on.

I have been replaying it recently, something I had not done since I was a little kid. Surprisingly the difficulty is high which can at first put someone off (as many 80s games were focused on practice and reaction skills) but once you get into the groove, it is very addictive and just as enjoyable as any new game.

Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. My wife hates them, but I loves them. The Running Man with Arnie. Gold.

I used to love waking up early on Saturday morning, about 6am. And I would just watch cartoons until 12. Glorious. The only day I woke early (that includes Christam folks ;) ). Even Gem, and the one that had the wrestlers in it.

Though I wasn't alive in the 80s, I feel some kind of fondness for it, though it's more second hand nostalgia from experiencing media from the time as a small child. All these great cartoons that I watched reruns of non-stop when they were on Boomerang were the highlight of my early childhood (about age 4-6). Watching Transformers G1 sparked my interest in it in 2012. I loved He Man and the MOTU, TMNT, Thundercats and was a big fan of The Smurfs. Man did I love the Smurfs. :p

So many good movies as well. You had Star Wars (well, 5 and 6), TFTM, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, Robocop, etc. All favourites of mine. ;)

Most of my music taste comes from the 70s 80s and early 90s as well. Aerosmith made a great comeback from their 70s style and made all their current hits. Guns N' Roses, my favourite band, formed in '85 and released one of, if not the greatest debut album(album in my opinion) of all time in Appetite for Destruction (1987). AC/DC introduced Brian Johnson, after Bon Scott left us in 1980. Metallica started in 1981, with Ride the Lightning, Kill 'em all, Master of Puppets, etc. Motley Crue were pretty good, though a little less inspired then other bands. Bon Jovi came out in '86 with Slippery When Wet and were/are great.

The video game boom happened as well. All these classic games on the NES were released in the 80s. Super Mario Bros (1,2,3), Contra, Castlevania, Duck Hunt, Legend of Zelda were some of the good ones for me.

There's so much that the eighties offered us. While the 70s (and arguably 60s) had that big boom in popular culture, the 80s defined it and made it permanent.

Being able to walk down the street, without concern, saying "Morning/Afternoon/G'day" to strangers you pass by without strange and puzzled looks.

Public fencing that rose no higher than just below the hip and schools that didn't resemble prisons.

Having neighbours who were actually neighbourly and whom you could trust to look over your home, and vice-versa, when you went out - streets often knowing everyone who lived on them.

Being able to stand at the fence of said neighbour and NOT being able to reach over and touch the side of their house.

Homes actually having front and backyards where kids were often found playing.

Residential streets that were more than a single lane wide.

Rotary-dial telephones and when you weren't near one, you couldn't be contacted. ;)

Corner stores & milk bottle deliveries.

Brocky vs. Dick Johnson.

A Country Practise, Neighbours, Hey Hey It's Saturday!, Mick Dundee & Mr. Squiggle!

Smaller towns, less people, longer distances between places, park lands, more wildlife and greater stretches of farm/crown land.

Women in High-cut Swimwear. :D

Everything is this list is a big +1.

I still remember putting the old, washed milk bottles outside for the milkman when I was a child. And using those foil caps for so many projects in primary school!

Back in the 80's, there was such a sense of community. Like you mentioned, neighbours knew each other, and kept an eye out for each other. That sort of thing just doesn't happen today, and its a real shame. :(
Whether its just people don't care anymore, or they are too worried about being liable if anything happens (theft, damage to property, etc) while you are away, or even too scared (with how seemingly normal people are in fact complete psychos!) its just really a shame that we have lost our close knit communities.

The old style fish and chip shops.

I remember my video/general store had a massive counter of lollies where you could buy 5 giant Redskins for 2cents.

Yay! We are all old:p

20 cents worth of lollies was more than a healthy amount. And if you managed to get 50 cnets worht then you didn't know what to do with them all :)

There was no such thing as Halloween in Australia (other than seeing it on American movies and TV shows etc.). Oh how I miss this.

Every time I watch the goldbergs I experience flashbacks :)

That Goonies episode. Just nailed it. I felt like someone had read my mind, saw my past, then made a tv show!

That's just it - we're not inheriting it as a traditional holiday. We're inheriting it as a modernised and commercialised piece of Americana. I know that holidays like Easter and Xmas have become commercialised too, but at least that's not how it started here. Those were holidays that once meant something to people (and still do to some people), whereas I don't think anyone in Australia who observes Halloween does so for its original religious/spiritual intent; so it just feels completely hollow.

do you know how many times we tried to trick or treat as kids in the '80s? we tried so hard to get it going and snag some lollies off random neighbours will little success.....so dissapointing. Amazing costumes did nothing.

But tonight my 3 year old and 6 year old will be out on the streets dressed as ghosts with dad chasing them around the neighbours yards as a ghostbuster!!!

im getting my childhood dream one way or the other ;) i dont care how strong your feelings are against a 'silly enjoyable escapist non offensive fun little holiday in this time of terrible things happening in the world' event :P

I had the privilege of having to watch gatchaman series 2, macross, mospeada,
And grew up with Transformers, Mask, starcom, galaxy rangers, brave star, silver hawks, etc.

Wasn't a real fan of master of the universe or thunder cats.

I didn't watch gundam during that time, they never had the anime release back then. I was spoilt for choice in Japanese toy robots as Singapore had a huge variety compared to Australia. I used to collect diaclones cars as I love sports cars and had jazz and sideswipe

Missed the 80s where I felt music is music not half garbage with bad lyrics today.
The play grounds at my place were more adventurous while today they will be banned.

I used to go to a great playground. It was a solid 2 storey affair with slides and a pole to slide down. You had to lean over a bit into space to grab the pole and slide down. If you fell it was a fair drop and it was onto bark and dirt. No railings or rubber foam anywhere. Good times.

Haha sounds like we had the same play ground.
There were some shaped like a rocket and was 3-4 levels high.
Yes scary but nobody ever died then. Today's playground is just a safety so that you don't sue the government .

I'd forgotten about the old playgrounds. A friend a few houses up from me had a full on flying fox in his backyard! Man, that thing was awesome!! We weren't allowed to use it unless his dad was home - so we mobbed him as soon as his car hit the driveway ;)

Playgrounds are all plastic and safety today... Kids need to get hurt occasionally when they are young. It builds character :p

I think you guys just miss your youth, not the 80's.

I'm pretty sure my daughter is happier than I was when I was younger.

As to playgrounds with dangerous equipment, fish & chips, friendly neighbours, front & back yards... they still exist. Maybe not if you live in a ghetto, but we still have all of the above where we live. :P

I'm pretty sure my daughter is happier than I was when I was younger.
And I think that our kids are, in general, smarter than we were at their age, thanks in no small part to advances in modern paedagogy. :) I rarely got to present a news item when I was in primary school (I could count the number of times I got to present news from K-6 on one hand). My Kindy age daughter presents a news item once a week at her primary school, and also once a week at her Saturday school. I also craved opportunities to do creative writing, which was also something I very rarely got to do at school. :(

I don't remember that episode either! But looking it up on YouTube, while it does seem a bit full on, it does have that anti-drug message going for it, so it doesn't seem as crazy as it sounds:
