I have been wanting to do one for a long time but I am not sure where to begin.

I'd say with a camera and some Transformers figures! :p

I believe you can make these with something as easily accessible like Windows Movie Maker, but Adobe Premiere Pro would be the better piece of software to use.

Unless there are some freeware stop motion programs out there?

I use Windows Movie Maker to make my stop motions. Too cheap to purchase anything. :p

So all you do is just take several still photos of a figure while moving it a little bit for each one?

I have tried to make a quick trial video of a figure walking using Movie Maker but the software doesn't seem to have support for frames shorter than 1.2secs as a result it looks cluncky as hell.

I've noticed that. I tried using Flash instead-only problem is that I need to resize the photos to fit, and it becomes REALLY FREAKING SLOW.

Click on the icon that looks like magnifying glass with a + sign in it then use your mouse to reduce the duration of each frame. You can click on that magnifying glass icon several times and reduce frame durations more and more.

I've made all my stop-motion animations using Windows Movie Maker.

Autobots transform (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QQif5fyMO8) - this was my 1st stop motion video made as a test
Bumblebee Vs Barricade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4hSeHKL0dQ)
Praying Mantis Transformers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYaOvwoNd8k)
Transformers Hare Hare Yukai Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vYCqNbzRjg) - IMO the best of my stop motions. Also the hardest to make (took me 5 days and over 400 shots).

I did it! Thank you!

I made a video of Star Saber walking across my computer desk and because I hand held the camera for each frame pic it looks as shaky as a Michael Bay film but it worked!
