View Full Version : Masterpiece Figures replacing CHUG lines in your collection?

I'm considering selling many of my Generations/Henkei/Universe/Classics figures that have had Masterpiece versions of them released for space and changes in taste (I still love Transformers, but some of these figures have never been touched since I bought them). I would like a bit of input from fellow Ozformers as to whether it's worth holding onto these figures and if they have any resell value because I've opened them but kept the full packaging (I slice around the bubble to get the figures out).

It's worth what you feel about them. If you have not really touched them or do not fancy them in your display then by all means is time to sell and move on to what you like to focus.

I have only two non masterpieces which I bought since joining this forum, one of them is metroplex titans and the other yots omega supreme . Everything else was masterpiece and had tried to collect only what I liked but have almost bought most of the cars.

I had more attachment to the cars as I always loved them from young.
Other mps like soundwave was a must buy.

I am however starting to wind down and take a break as my cabinet is full soon.

Probably less resale value inasmuch as others will probably feel the same, but if you've replaced them in your collection and don't really want them anymore then you might as well sell them anyway.
It'll help pay for at least some of your next MP, and give people (especially those new to the hobby) a chance to get hold of some toys they might want and not be able to find.

I dunno, I love having lots of different toys (actual different toys - not repaints) of different characters so if it was me Id be keeping them for comparisons and their own charm. For instance MP Sideswipe looks very cartoon accurate but CHUG Sideswipe has the little jet pack thingie. It can get a bit crowded (I have a shelf with 25 Grimlocks on it) but I think it's cool to see all the different interpretations.

But like Drifand said, it really depends on how much you personally value and enjoy the figures.

I personally value my CHUG collection more than any Masterpiece, but they are separate collections. I only collect CHUG, Autobot MPs, Prime and movie.

If you're not playing with a toy (or at very least displaying it), then get rid of it IMHO. That's why I did the big Pay It Forward thing, as I realised that many of my non-TF toys had just been sitting in boxes in my garage for years... what was the damn point of it?!? It felt more like hoarding than collecting, so I ended up just giving away almost all of my non-TF toys away for free. So yeah, if you haven't even touched these toys in a jolly long time, then I don't see the point in keeping them.

I personally collect both Classicsverse and Masterpiece, as I enjoy them both. :) MPs are better suited for display and "fiddle" play, whereas Classicsverse are better for full on proper toy play. I do sometimes do proper play w/ my MPs, but I must admit that I prefer Classicsverse for full playing.

For me the classicsverse stuff has been in my collection as the "best modern version" of the G1 characters, but the new MPs take that mantle, just like classicsverse did over previous toys.

So, for instance a character like Smokescreen. Cybertron Smokescreen was the best modern toy of Smokescreen in the right deco. Then Classics Smokescreen came along and he was the best modern version. Then Henkei was superior. Now MP Smokescreen has arrived and he's what I wanted all along so I'd no longer want the previous versions.

Same goes for the various Sideswipes, Prowls, Wheeljacks.

The Alternators were great at the time, realistic car modes, complex transformations, classic characters... but now I'm getting rid of all of mine because the MP cars do all that plus match the G1 characters spot on.

Wow, I've got 500 Transformers to give away then?!? I like to think there are valid reasons to have toys even if you don't have them on display or haven't played with them in a while.

I would say the key thing is you must be happy with what you want and how it is working out for you. Don't do it if you did have an attachment to them.

Yeah I'd have to get rid of my whole 1600

Nope. Not even close.

Another thing is that MP cars are a bit bigger than a standard deluxe so makes the Non-MP CHUG/Classicverse look smaller.

The other thing is mps are releasing at the slowest pace so be prepared for certain amount of frustration if takara tomy has not decided to make certain characters.

The way it goes looks like if they can't do a repaint version is not an important character to do in their list unfortunately.

This. I think the main draw of the classicsverse figures is that you can actually get all of the characters you want in a collection. Masterpieces are released much slower and are perfect versions of key characters. Sure, there'll be a time when most characters will have a toy in the MP line, but it won't be for a while. In the meantime, I think classics figures work well if you're going for groups of characters with more opportunities.

The masterpiece car releases were a tipping point in my desire to not keep my classics. I have several toy collecting interests, and I felt I needed to make some sacrifices. Honestly If I just ONLY collected transformers I would hang on to classics. They may seem to be redundant, its just a phase. In 10-15 years time many fans will have fond memories of these toys. Well maybe :o I think the best thing to do is sell off any doubles, and then just pack away into storage. If they are loose should only need one big box. Sell off the Ultras as they really are now redundant and they take up to much space anyway.

That will be a start as long as you are comfortable, nothing to be worried.
Same here the cars are the main pulling factor for me in the mp line.
I am not a full transformers geek here and so I had other toys to focus.

Even then is hard to keep up.
Good luck.

Masterpiece is separate to my "CHUG" collection.
I didn't display Binaltech with Masterpiece, and I won't display CHUG with Masterpiece

I've boxed away my CHUGs but only due to shelf space. I sold my Henkei Prowl when i got MP Prowl though. It was still good but really quite similar so it felt a little redundant. Plus his doors were a pain to transform without popping off

I don't actually have any of the current MP cars as CHUG - i opted for Sunstreaker over Sideswipe and Tracks over Wheeljack in that line (none of the other datsuns). Henkei Tracks has such a gorgeous paint job that i might keep it if an MP comes out - though he's also quite loose in the legs and not the best from that line, so i don't know. Henkei Sunstreaker is one of my favourite moulds and an MP would probably end up quite different so i'd most likely keep him. Hound too. Woops, i do have Bumblebee in both lines but they're quite different too.

My CHUG collection is full of holes already and i don't have as much attachment to them as i did when i first got them. I'd definitely keep them if no MPs were on the horizon, but when they're announced i'll probably just decide case by case if i feel a toy is worth keeping.

I think if a classics CHUG collection has lost its appeal, selling should be the last resort. The alternative is to try and reinvent it by changing or rearranging a display. Also cleaning and dusting will give a fresh outlook and satisfaction.
Don't be afraid to cull some of the deadwood in the collection, things that just don't fit, and just put them aside for now.
If you are considering collecting Combiner wars, I think classics CHUG collecting can be good again. All those classics figures will look great displayed with combiners!

The only figure I'm tempted to replace would be Bumblebee with the upcoming G2 Mp Bee... Just because he's shiny, and roughly in scale with the others

If your not going to touch your CHUG collection again then, it's probably time to go. I don't necessarily agree that everything needs to be on display, but I try and cycle my packed stuff so that way it still gets use.

I see CHUG and MP as quite different myself, as CHUG toys are usually more modern reimagining's of G1 characters while MP's are more like spot on recreations of old toy characters complete with 40 year old alt modes. When I play with my MP's (and not MP's) it feels like some form of time travel.

Of course collecting is pretty personal so none of that really matters, so as others have said if their not doing anything but gathering dust then you may as well get rid of them.

Classics for me. Took a while to get to the end of my collection, but I love their: size - in my hand and on a bookshelf; scale; potential - so many characters left for third party producers to fill the void; and the amount of Decepticon toys actually balancing with Autobot toys (with MP, we're more likely to get Slicer, Dark Ultra Magnus, Dark Star Sabre, and Bugbite before seeing a new unique Decepticon mould :p).

I like both collections. To me the CHUG stuff is a modern interpretation of G1 and I like that a lot of the 3rd party stuff goes in nicely. To me MP is the best G1 version stuff you could make. I want to keep my MP purely genuine. Having a 3rd party Combaticon (like Warbotron) next to G1 style Bumblebee doesn't look right.
For that reason I will keep both collections as one for G1 style stuff and the other for modern and 3rd party stuff. Saying that, my CHUG stuff is only the G1 styled ones. The bots that are just G1 names on random vehicles do not interest me.

I think that creating a masterpiece from conceptualisation to final product would be considerably more time consuming than what goes behind a regular main line figure. It's kinda like comparing the time it takes to order food at a shopping centre food court vs at a fine restaurant. Quality over quantity. ;)

This is an interesting topic, clearly a range of views.

I have always viewed the 'CHUG' lines to be the modern interpretation of older toys and characters, and in some cases inclusions of characters into an expanded G1ish universe ie Lockdown and Lugnut.

I don't mind having multiples of a character, I used to feel that I was after a 'definitive' version of characters, but since animated and the movies and more recently Prime, I've quickly come to accept the 'different universe' different version idea. I really like the CHUG toys, many of them have great transformations and like others have said I fell I don't have to be as careful with them as I do with masterpieces. That picture Goki posted of Bluestreak in the sand makes my gag reflex hurt.

Not many of us have the luxury of having a whole room to store our collection in. My wife calls the spare room/study/drum room my transformers room but it's not really. I have a single cabinet in the corner, there's a drum kit, a huge desk, another computer desk and dvd shelves. I have more transformers on display in the lounge in the large Billy cabinet from IKEA.

Having said that I have a limited space for displaying my toys. I like to rotate themes through the cabinet, sometimes changes in a character over the years, sometimes a group from a line, movie, animated, prime etc. keeping toys off display isn't necessarily hoarding, especially if you don't have space to display them all. My enjoyment of them is sporadic as I go through phases of deciding what I want to display.

I don't even have all my Masterpiece transformers on display as if I did, there wouldn't be room for much else. I do consider the MP's to be the definitive version of a G1 toy. I can't wait to be able to put my G1 collection on display next to the MP collection for the 25-however many year comparison.

I'd suggest, if you're losing the love for your CHUG figures, put them away for a while and come back to them in a few months or a year, if you still don't have any love for them, then move them on. maybe replace the ones your thinking about moving on with Masterpieces in your display and see how you feel about it. the Masterpiece line is going great guns at the moment, but I'd question if they will ever produce as many characters as has been and surely will be produced in the more generic CHUG Generations lines.

Prices for many of them are quite high on the secondary market since a lot of people have gotten into them later and going back to pick up the older molds has become difficult. Which explains how Takara can get away with charging $100 for a 3 pack of old deluxes, it's cheaper than the after market.
Selling them with open packaging and paperwork might add a few bucks to the sell price but I wouldn't bank on making too much out of the cardboard.

My 2c. :o

Personally, I have 'invested' soooo much money and time over the years on my CHUG collection. I finally am at the point where I have all the ones I want and it would take many decades and much, much more money for my MP collection to rival my CHUG collection.

Just wanted to clarify that I didn't simply mean that I think that any toy in storage should be discarded -- I meant that any toy that's not in use for a long time. If you have toys in storage and you rotate with the ones that are out of storage, then obviously you're eventually using your toys. The toys that I offloaded hadn't seen the light of day for years! I wasn't rotating them or anything! They were just in storage. And yeah, it was because I didn't have the space to display them, but I also didn't have the time to rotate them for display or play (I was planning on doing it, but it just never happened!). Since becoming a parent, what free time I do have now is solely dedicated to Transformers. For that reason, I offloaded my non-TF toys. :o Those toys were doing nothing else other than sitting in boxes in my garage; so I thought that I might as well give them away to other people who'd make better use of them!

I will still continue my CHUG collection as well as the MPs i just started. Just hope i will have enough funds to do that though with Combiner Wars also coming now to the picture and hope i could soon get most of my Generations migrate as well here in Australia...goodness i miss them so much (teary eyes)

Hmm an interesting topic indeed!

Here's a question OP: Do you enjoy reading the IDW comics? If the answer is yes, you may want to hang onto certain CHUGs as they will most likely end up being the most IDW accurate iterations of each character (if that's important to you). So far the MP line has been extremely faithful to G1, not the new IDW comics. Just throwing that out there!

There's a number of CHUG molds I can't stand (Prowl and Galvatron spring to mind), but I can't imagine replacing them with anything but a better version within the same line. For example, I recently demoted Voyager Jetfire from the display shelf after receiving Leader Class Jetfire.
