As usual, heaps of stuff at the annual American Toyfair, as this is when Hasbro reveals the next half year of products.

So far is the "Preview Event" which is the presentation to Media and Investors the day before the Toyfair opens, so tomorrow we should see photos of their actual exhibit, and all their new toys.

Allspark Pictures logo released. Allspark pictures will be the home of smaller-scale projects - big-budget projects will continue the partnership with major studios.
My Little Pony is highlighted this year. The brand grew 47% last year.
MLP is Hasbro's new Billion Dollar Brand. It's clear that Transformers has lost the crown to MLP.
Transformers given names for their three target demographics - Recruit/Preschool (Rescue Bots - Ages 2 - 4), Engage/Core Boys (RID - Ages 5 -10) and Expand/Fan (Generations - Ages 10+)
Rescue Bots show continues to do well and Hasbro plans to continue to invest in the line.
Robots in Disguise is being called the new chapter for Transformers. More story, more humor - Hasbro says this one is all about the fun.
New initiative "Transformers360". This project is to make Transformers brand accessible at all times on multiple platforms ranging from Toys to Games.

The Toyfair goes for four days, so not just the weekend.
The Melbourne one is the same... and each year it is different days of the week. Sometimes a weekend, sometimes (like this year) all weekdays.

I think including the weekend in the four-day event, would allow for all those independent store owners or major retailer store managers to travel to and from the Fair without having to impact too much on their Mon-Fri job.

Really impressed with the Constructicons. The robot modes look wonderful, the vehicle modes look great. The size comparison with g1 Devastator is mind blowing. Sure they are 'out of scale' with classics but this toy is all about making a big Devastator (and a big one that will look good with MPs I think).

Ultra Magnus is such a wonderful surprise. So much better than I had anticipated. I'm curious about his size (if next to MP Magnus they'll make a good "Then and Now" pair?) but I'll snap this up.

I was really impressed with the Ultra Magnus. I thought we would be getting some boring recolour - but I was really surprised when I saw the pics. He'll be a definite buy from me.

The Protectobots looks great too. Hot Spot is beautiful! Defensor's legs look a bit fat and kinda throw off the proportion a little though I think. But he does look pretty cool.

I hope they're not releasing all this stuff at the same time. My wallet is gonna explode :p

They're all beautiful. Devastator's combined form, robots and vehicles are perfect. The pure cartoon and toy accuracy trumps the 3P Devastators easily, in my books. Cyclonus is nice, but a pass. RTS will be fine. All of the Protectobots look fantastic in both modes. Blades and Hot Spot look the best. The combined form is pretty nice. Looks solid.

As freaking awesome as Viper looks, I'll be skipping him, since I have no place for him. Warpath is good enough to get though.

Ultra Magnus, with Devastator, is the star of the show. Minimus Ambus fitting in his chest? Fantastic. IDW proportions while keeping the G1 blockiness? Perfection. Looking forward to it.

The RID stuff looks decent, but nothing I feel the need to get.

Cyclonus -- robot looks rather chunky, but jet looks great. Doesn't personally interest me as I have both Universe and RtS Cycloni.
Warpath -- nice retool, but as I already have Generations Deluxe Warpath, I'll pass.

Oh man, I am going to be so freaking broke this year! For the first time I ever I've decided to buy doubles as I am loving the individual combiner wars figures as well as the gestalts. I NEEDS ME THAT Defensor and Devestator!


While it would be nice for Devestator to be in scale with the rest - I'm sure as hell not complaining that he is nice and huge! Plus the individual Constructicons as Voyager size makes sense compared to the rest of the line. In that sense its perfectly logical for the likes of Long Haul to be twice the size of First Aid. Groove becoming chest armor is a fanstastic idea!

Magnus looks brilliant, but I'm really excited for that Cyclonus - he look sexy as!

Massive props to you Hasbro - you've done very fricken well! :D

I'm excited for Magnus with Ambus, that's a very nice touch and will fit beautifully into my IDW display.

Not that excited for anything else thankfully. The last year was full of budgetary negotiations with the wife... It'll be nice to have a small break from all that.

Still, there is a lot of nice product and it's great to see fans catered for in this next round of offerings. Thanks Hasbro for listening!

Ultra Magnus is the undisputed start of this show as far as I'm concerned.

Some of the Protectobots are very nice too, especially Streetwise, but Hot Spot and Blades are great too. Nothing against Rook, as he looks like a good figure, but the lack of a deluxe Groove is a big disappointment. The vehicle mode of First Aid as a rugged emergency vehicle instead of a traditional ambulance is fine, but the robot mode has an ugly backpack.

Cyclonus works in every respect expect the head design.

I'm reserving judgment on Devy. As has been mentioned, some of them have very suspect-looking elbows for such big figures. Long Haul's elbow joints appears to move sideways instead of up and down, for heaven's sake. Wish his head was black too. Not sure that size-wise there is a spot in my collection for these Constructicons.

As for RID, I know I'll be caving and getting a few of the deluxes including Jazz, Sideswipe and drift. Reckon I'll be combining Prime and RID collections and pretending they are one line.

Seriously though this is all outstanding. I give lots and lots of respect to hasbro for all of it. The amount of G1 product to choose from is actually quite incredible. My boys love the G1 DVDs so this has been met with a lot of excitement on viewing the pics on the ipad. Orders are going in for birthdays and Christmas as we speak.

Colour me impressed... really impressed. Some of these reworked Generations moulds are more than just a head-swap of old... we have extensive panel replacements on some, to look like a whole new toy for collectors and non-collectors.
Silverbolt into Cyclonus... here I was thinking that would look so stupid with just a new head and purple plastic, but Cyclonus has all new panelling on the top of the plane mode (nose, tail, wings), and a completely new robot chest front to go with the new head. The only things kept are elements that collectors wouldn't even notice (arms and legs, and the internal engineering to transform it).

When you ignore the Legends class, which is probably harder to swap out parts when doing a forced redeco (Optimus into Hound, Megatron into Warpath), the way they have reused the moulds in the larger size classes to almost look like new toys, it is not only respecting the dedicated collectors who might be a fan of certain characters to want a proper homage toy, but also provides the Retailers with something that looks like new product, without creating a new product from scratch.
(I guess if you think about it, GEN Jhiaxus and Chromia were probably a test to see how effective it was swapping out a massive amount of parts and panels, to make a toy that looked different enough from the original to look like a whole new toy, but still work as a toy for that character.)

I had to look up this mini robot for Ultra Magnus, but ignoring that I am in love with UM. Will be so great to have him in the CHUG collection even if he may be a tad larger than some of the other characters already around him

Devy looks better in each shot and has moved into a "i'll get him" position, even though he will need to be carefully positioned in a collection as I still think he is far too large (46cm vs 34cm for Superion)

Loving the individual robots for Defensor, but not Defensor himself at the moment. Not sure why.

RID toys have me worried that we will again not see many Decepticons - only Steeljaw so far in the Warrior class assortment. As much as I like some, not following the cartoon for toys annoys.

So sold on those Protectobots. Would have liked an actual ambulance alt-mode for First Aid, but the robot mode looks good enough I can let it go. Groove looks great.
And yeah, credit to Hasbro for good retooling.

Looks very much like Hot Spot will be retooled into an Onslaught at some point as people have been predicting, though looking at the way they've done the head for Defensor I'm curious how they'll be able to make a Bruticus out of it if they keep the G1-esque cannons/'missile truck' alt-mode.
Really hoping Brawl will get a tank alt-mode, rather than being an APC retool of Rook.

Want to like Cyclonus, but just not feeling it. The head, the same blocky undercarriage, the square shoulders...I'm quite a fan of Cyclonus and this is just a few steps short.

Magnus is brilliant, especially the Ambus figure. I'm still happy with my Classics/City Commander version, but it's nice to see Hasbro putting stuff like this out there, especially so soon after MP Magnus.

Same thing as many of us with the Constructicons - pleasantly surprised at how well they turned out, but they're just too big for my collection. Again, I'm glad Hasbro are doing it, but it's a pass for me.

Hot Spot - Excellent in both modes! :D

First Aid - Like the alt mode, really like the robot mode! :D

Streetwise - Excellent looking body, interesting the colour scheme is kinda like the Asia Kids day Streetsmart on the alt mode

Rook - nice but not particularly excited

Blades - what we were all expecting. Why cant Blades ever have some swords as weapons :confused:? His names is Blades and he loves hand to hand combat!

Groove - nice alt mode, kinda looks like the hoverbikes Prowl and Chromedome used to ride. Not a fan of the robot mode but still better than G1 - gone from no legs to too leggy :rolleyes: I really love that they found a way to have him a part of Defensor though.

Cyclonus - I didn't even realise this was a retool of Silverbolt until I noticed his gun. That alt-mode is damn sexy, though Im not a massive fan of the bot head.

Ultra Magnus - very cool, but I'd have been more excited if I hadn't just gotten MP Magnus

Warpath - I love Warpath so glad to see him, though I think he has had some better and more accurate figures based on him in the last decade

Viper - meh, dont really care

Constructicons - just fan-f'ing-tastic! I have some very minor quibbles with Bonecrushers and Long Hauld bot modes and Mixmasters alt mode but they are very minor. They are all just great and Devestator just looks so damn good! :D

RID & Rescuebots: With all the combiner wars toys I don't really care about these ones at the moment. The big RID Optimus is kinda cool as I'm a sucker for an Optimus with a trailer.

So, no elbow for Scrapper confirmed:( I get it that his arms have to be able to support half of the combiner weight but considering these are going for a standard voyager price each, and with that kind of budget I don't see why they couldn't have engineered a way around it.

I'd still be getting the set though. Devastator was the only complete combiner I had when I was a kid and my dad went out of the way to track down each individual one for me. Looking at the stock photos just brings me back in time: they remind of the old g1 package art. They just ooze geewuness.

It's a good time to be a Transformer fan.

I'm a little surprised that they only revealed the next wave for Generations (and RID), but not the remaining few, including the ones that we already know about, like Legends Skywarp, Legends Rodimus, Voyager Optimus Maximus (the white redeco), and Onslaught.

And if we are getting Onlsaught (from Hot Spot), should that also mean Combaticons as well... and if so, that would mean more than the numbers that were announced at NYCC, which may have been their original plans if the line wasn't more popular than originally estimated. (Armada was underestimated by Hasbro - which ended up having delays to produce more stock, and extra redecos were added at the end just to meet the unexpected demand).


The Constructicons have some odd proportions, but considering the triple-changer nature of the toys, plus adding in articulation for both individual and combined modes (over the original figure) and keeping all modes resembling the originals, I think that's about as balanced as they will be able to get it. Mixmaster is probably the odd one out in vehicle mode... while Long Haul looks a bit stocky in robot mode.

Colour me impressed... really impressed. Some of these reworked Generations moulds are more than just a head-swap of old... we have extensive panel replacements on some, to look like a whole new toy for collectors and non-collectors.
Silverbolt into Cyclonus... here I was thinking that would look so stupid with just a new head and purple plastic, but Cyclonus has all new panelling on the top of the plane mode (nose, tail, wings), and a completely new robot chest front to go with the new head. The only things kept are elements that collectors wouldn't even notice (arms and legs, and the internal engineering to transform it).

This trend of extensive retooling is brilliant. As a collector I appreciate the effort. Thought may be the cost of retooling an existing mold has gone down to be economically viable to do on a regular basis. When Sandstorm happened, I really thought it was a well planned out one-time sort of thing.

Whoever is in charge of these designs and whoever talked the big-wigs into extensive redecos / we need a new word for redesigns with this many changes should be applauded, new life has been breathed into their whole design and manufacturing process and we are the ones who benefit.

I am very much looking forward to having a proper IDW MtMtE shelf in my collection, and I will seriously be considering getting a second figure to display for most of the Combiner figures, that is how impressed I am.

If I can find them, these figures will be like Amiibos, blink and you'll miss them on the shelves.

Not digging Long Haul's bot mode at all. Hook's elbows look odd, as does Mixmaster's alt mode. The rest of the bots look ok, but it seems they're compromised a lot just to form Devastator, which I understand but it's still a shame. It may look better in person.

Ultra Magnus is easily the best reveal of the lot IMO.

Just going through the photos of the actual exhibit now, noting the other new reveals that haven't yet been seen as official images or in press releases...

At the presentation panel, the three Rescue Bots that had animated forms in the Preview slideshow (Blurr, Salvage and High Tide) are in a clip as new recruits on the cartoon. I'll have to see if this clip has been released online. (I'd really love to have Salvage done like Animated Wreck-Gar... but he's not likely to be so wacky on a young kids cartoon)
RID looks to have a McDonalds promotion in America.
The RID toys shown at the presentation panel were all included in the official images or in the actual exhibit, so nothing mentioned that us fans can't see somewhere online.
The Super Bumblebee is supposed to be the biggest Bumblebee ever (as if we needed to have more big Bumblebee toys to set a new record), and I looked back at the press-release, and it is 19 inches (about 48cm) tall.
The Generations Voyager Cyclonus is said to have a Galvatron-looking combiner head (to go with the Combiner name of Galvatronus - not sure where that name was officially stated though, so I might just have that noted as unconfirmed at this time).
The Leader Class Ultra Magnus for wave 3 can store the Minimus Ambus figure inside the chest in robot mode, but isn't required for transformation.

The number of steps of each figure goes from 8 steps (Long Haul & Mixmaster) up to 17 steps (Scavenger).

Looks like Kreo will still continue with Combiners, but not as you know it.
Instead of the Gen1 Kreo combiners of 2013, these ones are all the one character.

The core Kreon is regular size, while the four limb Kreons are the smaller "Human" sized ones. An unusual approach to the Kreon Combiner concept, as it looks like Hasbro aren't planning to do any Gen2 redecos... and the combined modes of these ones look really creepy with the limb faces being visible. (the Gen1 Kreon combiners didn't have their heads visible or included in the combined mode)

There was a humorous poke at the Drift character in our Creative section of a combiner Drift made up of five Drifts (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?p=172715#post172715)... which now kinda ruins the joke by now being possible.


Hero Mashers

Wave (4) - RID themed again for the second wave of the small size class for this year. The first wave had Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Steeljaw.

The official pics for Cyclonus do their job and really show the best angles of that figure (like a lot of other figures that have kibble or cavities)... The actual Cyclonus toy on display looks a bit blocky in robot mode (Gen1 Cyclonus as a toy and on screen was very sleek and curve), and the kibble under the jet mode is distracting. But I'll still look forward to getting it.

Since I am a couple years behind on the IDW comics, the Ultra Magnus toy is alien to me... but looks impressive for someone who doesn't have expectations of it looking like the IDW form over the Gen1 form (since we have the MP Ultra Magnus ticking the box for a Gen1 version, we didn't need another big expensive one so soon).

Some thoughts...

Be aware that whenever a gestalt is made, compromises to the individual robot is unavoidable. The toy essentially has a third mode, which is the 'gestalt' mode (e.g. arm, leg, torso, waist). This means at least two things:
1/ The toy must be engineered around this gimmick, thus elements of the robot and vehicle mode may be compromised. There may be even greater constraints if the robot has two gestalt modes (i.e. arm and leg).
2/ Budget. Every part - every panel, every joint etc. - is carefully budgeted for. The addition of the gestalt mode(s) consumes more of the toy's overall budget, thus sacrifices may need to have been made to the robot or vehicle mode in order to ensure that the toy itself doesn't exceed the allocated budget.

So it's easy to look at some of these toys and think that they may be disappointing for its price point, but bear in mind that unlike most other toys in their price point, they have to combine with other robots to form a gestalt. e.g. looking at the photo of CW Long Haul and comparing it w/ my ROTF Voyager Long Haul, the ROTF figure may be a more substantial Voyager in robot and vehicle mode, but of course, that toy doesn't combine.

Okay, it's disappointing that Scrapper doesn't have elbows, no argument there, but we know that his arms transform into load bearing heel spurs for Devastator's foot. The alternative would be to include elbows and some kind of locking mechanism for those elbows, such as having the forearms slide up and lock into place. In order to do this, they would have to make sacrifices somewhere else, and people would complain about that. Long Haul is rather stout in robot mode, but he forms the very core of Devastator's body; he would literally be bearing the weight of three Voyagers connected above him; and hopefully be sturdy enough not just to bear the weight for display, but also for rigorous toy play too.

So all things considered, I think that Devastator looks pret-ty sweet. :) I personally wouldn't buy doubles of the Constructicons, but I might consider buying repaints. e.g. G2 colours, Diaclone colours etc. Maybe not the late-G1 colours with the combining gimmick neutered. :p

Hmmmm, actually some nice reveals this year.

I think I'd have to go with Magnus being the star of the TF reveal, finally a Leader Class toy that warrants the size. The IDW inspiration and Minimus Ambus figure look cool, I hope Ambus can fit inside him.

Also Viper looks cool, Cobra TF crossover with a new head sculpt to boot, that I know I'm getting.

Devestator looks a lot better than I thought he would, the extreme G1 styling on his combined mode and separate bots give him an edge, however the close up photos seem to sugest he will suffer from the same issues as Metroplex of hollowness and limited articulation.

Not sure about the Protectobots, there not doing much for me, First Aid in particular I find disappointing being a retool of the new Stunticon, and most of the others are too spacey.

I quite like that Cyclonus but where does he fit in? He's less G1 that Generation Cyslonus and he's not the IDW samurai Cyclonus either.

Possibly a lot of them are, Hasbro's paint aps seem to have gotten worse of late, The white paint on my Swerve's face is semi transparent, and the white on his targetmaster ally has started to peel off.

oh boy, today was full of awesome,

and some not so awesome.

I'll go through my opinions here.

Constructicons/Devastator
Devy looks increadible, huge and imposing. but I'm really disheartened by the individual bot modes, I know some sacrifices had to be made for the combination but they seriously look underwhelming, a bit too G1 for my taste, but I'll still be getting them for how awesome Devastator is.

Protectobots
They all look great, even if half of them are remolds. they managed to do enough to Dead End and Offroad that they almost look like new toys. and as a Huge fan of First Aid from MtMtE I am quite happy with how he turned out.
Blades is a little underwhelming since he didn't receive as much retooling as Streetwise and First Aid did, but I like the Alpha Bravo mold so I can't really complain.
Streetwise looks surprisingly imposing and impressive once again a nice remold.
Groove is a bit lanky and I don't like how his chest armour mode looks but he's still a decent looking little legends figure.
Hot Spot is very nice, and I can definitely see an Onslaught retool in the future.
and as for the new member Rook. I am quite impressed, he looks very nice, a surprising amount of "character" in his design even though he has never existed before and therefore has no character, his method of mounting his weapons instead of holding them in his hands is different and means there will be a lot of weapons that he can't wield but he still looks very cool. I hope a potential Brawl is a different new mold though.

Legends
Viper is a cool remold for G.I Joe fans, warpath looks nice but not very warpath-y

Cyclonus
Better than I expected and quite an impressive retool, but I probably won't be getting him. the fact his combined mode is based on galvatron is just strange

Ultra Magnus w/ Minimus Ambus
Star of the show right here, Hasbro knocked it outta the park!
this guy looks so good I almost regret buying the masterpiece version. (almost) he looks big, imposing, and totally MTMTE. I love the look of his robot and vehicle modes, and the inclusion of a tiny Minimus Ambus that can store in his chest AND ALSO TRANSFORM is SO cool! the fact that you can also take all of Magnus' weapons and plug them together to create a massive hammer is just icing on the cake (I'm a fan of hammer wielding Mangni) this is the first leader class I've been really excited about. and I will definitely be picking one up when he's released. so I'll have MP Magnus for my masterpiece shelf and CW Magnus for my IDW shelf. this just looks like a perfect leader class toy, (oh and no buttflap, take that MP Magnus)

RID warriors
both Sideswipe and Jazz look fairly nice, but a little underwhelming. Jazz just seems messy, while Swiper seems messy and awkward looking, not to mention he is missing his forearm spikes from the show which even the legion version managed to get. I may change my mind when I see them in person but right now I'm pretty unimpressed and questioning whether or not I want to continue collecting RID Warriors.

RID Minicons and Deployers.
kind of a weird Idea, the deployers both look pretty unimpressive probably due to their gimmicks hampering their designs. but all the minicons as weird as they are seem kinda fun and I may end up collecting these.

RID Legions
Underbite isn't bad, Fixit is perfect

One Steps
not a fan of this size class, but thunderhoof and fracture look nice, this is my first time seeing Thunderhoof's appearance and I think he looks pretty awesome so I am really hoping there is a warrior in the cards

Super Bumblebee
Was this really needed, it's EVEN BIGGER THAN DEVASTATOR!! I can see this thing causing toy aisles to be wall to wall yellow for a long time

Mega Optimus
Looks cool, better than the warrior.

all good here, Drift being a triple changer is a thing now I guess, thanks Bay. the new combiners are just strange.... seriously, a combiner made out of 5 bumblebee? with heads for knees and elbows, with an elbow that looks like he is screaming (probably "WHY THE HELL AM I AN ELBOW? WHO TRANSFORMS INTO AN ELBOW, SERIOUSLY!")
"Hey kids, you love bumblebee right? Sure you do. Well now guess what, you can take these 5 bumblebees and combine them together to create one giant bumblebee! It's bumble-tastic! Bumblicious! Bumblebee Bumblebee! BUMBLEBEE!!!"

all in all, between the various combiner teams, devy and magnus. plus masterpieces, and some RiD stuff, it's looking like an expensive year....

Someone from Seibertron has been wandering around other exhibits at the NY Toyfair, and found a number of licensed items...

Metal Earth - 3D metal model kits (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/toy-fair-us-2015-coverage-transformers-g1-metal-earth-3d-models-unveiled/32247/). These look awesome, and I hope they come here.
They are only US$12 at BBTS for April, and based on their size I think they might be plastic with vacuumised/chrome plating... but if they are actual "metal" models, that's even better for the feel of them, because they just look amazing.
Four were on display - Optimus, Bumblebee, Megatron and Soundwave (with Laserbeak I think).

Loving the look of the Protectobots. Even Rook. Wish Groove's robot mode would scale but then G1's vehicle mode scale disparity was kinda nuts.

Mixmaster's vehicle mode kinda bugs me, but it's not enough to ruin the overall impressiveness of the Constructicons. I'm actually glad Scrapper's got no elbows (for the structural reason Gok point out).
