Hope the above is close enough to what's normally done here.

First thoughts on Megatron, photos to follow later tonight/tomorrow.

Robot Mode

I really like the silver over the grey they could have used, wish the shin pieces were also silver, but I can deal.

Robot mode looks, for lack of a better description, awkward. Don't get me wrong, he can pull of some pretty sweet poses, but when stood next to Brainstorm, it just doesn't look as "natural" - I think it has to do with the size difference between the legs and the arms.

Unlike the promo photos, you CAN rotate his fusion cannon around, so the large end faces forward and looks more traditional, just no missile obviously.

Head is quite large for a transformer, bigger than Jetfire's by a little, and the face sculpt is perfect, angry Megatron.

Tank treads can sit in a couple of positions on his back due to the transformation, stick up further, or hidden away a little, or can be left out to the side, similar to his earlier IDW appearances such as Stormbringer - though doing so well prevent you from pointing his fusion cannon forward.

As has been reported, while the Decepticon sigils are tampographed on to the figure, he does come with a sticker sheet with both Autobot and Decepticon sigils, so you can choose what faction he belongs to - following his about face in the recent IDW series. I haven't chosen yet, so I've just stuck on some holo glow Reprolabels for now.

Tank Mode

Tank mode is imposing. I don't have any other leader class tanks, but compared to ROTF Bludgeon and Gen. Blitzwing (both Voyagers) he is immense. The instructions state that his robot mode cod-piece connects to the rear of the turret, however doing so prevents rotation. Leaving it down covers a slight gap, but he's pretty gappy at the back when the turret is rotation about 90°. Front panel is solid so there's no worries there.

Having the turret extend in tank mode solves the problem of having either too small a turret, or too large a fusion cannon (as with WFC Megs.)

However, the best part, WORKING RUBBER TREADS! They roll. No false treads and plastic wheels here.

As stated above photos and comparison shots will come soon, hope you enjoyed.

Wow - the pics next to ROTF Bludgeon really give you a sense of scale, considering Bludgeon is a pretty good size to begin with. Just makes me want this figure sooner :)

15th February 2015, 01:41 AM
One thing of note, the moulded hatches on both turrets are close to the same size, so even side by side, they still appear in the same "scale" as such, just Megatron is a bigger model tank - kind of like Classics and CW Prime, with CW being a bigger truck, but still the same scale

Can't wait for my one to come......

Thank you

I think I've figured out why he looks awkward to me. His head is just a little too big in proportion to the test of his body.

I forgot to mention, if you don't lock the turret in place with his codpiece, the back of it is a little loose/floppy, and there's no elevation at all

Aaaaaand, my Cloud Megatron just became redundant. :p

Just out of interest, can you see any reason why the chest logo couldn't have been a flip around panel (similar to MP Bumblebee/RotF DLX Wheelie/TM2 Blackarachnia)? i.e. is there any part of that chest's design that would prevent such a gimmick?

prjkt
15th February 2015, 01:21 PM
The chest piece is the underside of the front panel on the tank. So there's two pieces of plastic there, and the locations of the faction symbols (chest/tank panel) won't line up. Plus while its a cool idea in concept, in practice I don't like how it would break up the outline of you know what I mean

Edit: on Cloud Megatron, I don't have one, but that version was what I had in mind when I used Bludgeon as a stand in ;)

Very nice figure. Crisp paint apps. I can't wait to have a properly done version of G1 Megatron. It's been a long time coming. Are there any pics with stickers yet?

Really nice. Finally a decent Megatron! My only complaint is that it's leader size and not voyager so this I will not buy (plus I only recently got cloud Megatron).

I picked up both earlier.... Not much I can say different, but definately pleased with how different they look. Must say I like the colour of Armadas cannon.... The details pop out more than on Megatron.

As for the "crotch" in alt mode.... You missed a tiny bit in the instructions... Tey show you to move it up to the turret, but then down to the between leg position later.

I really like the different barrel lengths as well.... I think shorter might even be better than longer...

But the stickers annoy me.... Also has some g1 Megs stickers, but they aren't transparent, so the logos really jar against the silver... Not using any!

But the absolute best part I think is the way the turret rotates.... I was fearing G2 Megs.... But he is amazing! No the mechanism looks interesting in his chest too.... And had it been noted the gun breaks down into too? Coz it does...

One of my photos has the codpiece down at the back, still looks gappy.

Oh well, I'm still happy with this, probably the best version of Megatron I'll ever have the chance of owning

I've just checked all over both. With a fine tooth comb.... Apart from the head, there is not a single difference between the 2 Megs....(mould wise that is.... Colour and deco is totally different)

And as such, A:Megs has a single symbol on the right side of the turret in Alt mode, and one on each shoulder in Bot mode... So a floppy panel would be useless and redundant on A:Megs, so the change to the mould probably wasn't justified...

Plus who knows what came first.... Toy design or story outlay.... They may not have known!

But I am wondering.... Is this a G1 Megs redeco'd to A:Megs? Or an A:Megs redeco'd to G1???

I have a feeling it was either concurrent, or a "Hey, What if?" Moment in terms of giving G1 Megs a new head and paint job.

I picked up mine yesterday, the only sticker I put on him were the Autobot symbols on top of his decepticon ones. Kinda digging having an autobot Megatron. Also rubber working tank treads are awesome.

I'm pretty sure it's G1 Megs redecoed into Armada. It has more G1 design elements than Armada, and only just passes as the Armada version of the character. It's pretty obvious to me that they came up with the idea after designing the G1 toy.

That said, the recent in-hand pics I've seen make this (and the Armada version) look much better than it did in the press pics. I'll be getting the Armada version first chance I get.

I think if his upper chest could widen with his shoulders the proportions would be much better. I am warming to the G1 look but the Armada one can burn as I have always really liked the 2002 design.

Yu can apply the black and silver one to the fusion cannon - that sticker's black colour goes all the way to the edge.

A great figure that excellently exudes G1 Megatron in robot mode, with a G2 Megatron style tank mode. They've done a good job in making the tank panels also look gun-esque -- it almost looks as if it could transform into a Walther P-38! :D They've even sculpted faux gun-handle grip lines on the outer sides of the legs. :) The rolling tank treads were an extremely pleasant surprise. The cannon is also really well done; it's the same concept as we've seen on toys like Classics Deluxe Megatron, only executed a lot better. I really like how the fusion cannon can swing 180 degrees to either resemble G1 or Armada Megatron's cannon. Speaking of which, I think that this toy was initially conceived to be G1 Megatron, w/ Armada Megatron worked into the design afterwards. Handsprime was with me when I bought this toy, and we both opened our CW Megatrons at the same time and did a direct comparison, and IMHO this toy is conceptually, first and foremost, G1 Megatron. Having said that, there are some neat design elements that were put in for the sake of the Armada Megatron retool, including dead Mini-Con ports, and the aforementioned fusion thing. The paint ops on Armada Megatron is actually really nice and helps to make that toy look more like Armada Megs. The paint ops on G1 Megs is notably less, but for the G1 Megatron character, it's a case of "less is more." :) My only minor gripe is that I do wish that the chest logo was on a flippable panel -- but this isn't a design flaw per se. :o

Highly recommended.

P.S.: The bio is actually reasonably well written too -- looking at Megatron's rise as the people's hero to his fall to becoming a tyrant. It's a lot better than what we typically see in recent bios, and is a refreshingly welcome change from just telling us how physically powerful and kick-butt this character is. At least it's making some attempt at telling us who Megatron is, and not what he is. The English bio does suffer from some typographical errors (too many or not enough spaces) which the French, Spanish and Portuguese bios don't seem to have.

Wow! This guy looked rubbish in the press shots, but in hand, the colours, design and feel are just wow!

To me the stickers are kinda 'meh', but glad they included them. Super impress by the turrnet/gun mechanism, just wish he had some more feet articulation... ah well!
Now to find Amarda version (which I was not planning to get until I had this guy in hand!)

I must say, I wasn't convinced when I first saw him, but after reading everyone's reviews I thought it would be worthwhile! Now that I have him, I can definitely say he is. He's a lot of fun, with lots of G1 likeness! The tank mode has a nice design and is fun to play with... I'm really enjoying that extendable turret :)

Agree with all the positives stated above. Absolutely fantastic figure.

Robot mode looks such much better in person. Love all the nice little gun details including the trigger halves on the shoulders. If the inside of his legs were red (practically not possible though as they flip 180 degrees to become sides of the tank), he would've been just perfectly G1. Gorgeous head sculpt. The eyes are a tad too big for my liking but that's possibly for better light piping. I don't mind the shoulder connection at all. A good solution to handling possibility with those shoulders. My one minor gripe is that I wish his head would sit a bit forward rather than so far back.

Transformation is along the line with all the CW design: simple, effective and fun.

Tank mode is chunky and imposing. Functional treads are always nice to have

Another great sample from the current Generations line and a testament of why it's been a success among fans.

While I personally enjoyed the challenge of the more complicated Generations and Movie toys over the years, I have to say that this is the definition of a perfect transformers toy.

It's simple enough that both my boys could transform it without assistance, but not so simple as to be boring, it's poseable enough to be fun but not weakened by having too many joints. It's recognisable as G1 Megatron, so it'll set off nostalgia for a lot of grown-ups, making them buy it for their kids, who will then have a sneaky play with it once the kids are in bed.

It's great that there's still the MP line and 3P for the high-end TF market, but I think if Hasbro keeps making toys at this level of complexity (likewise the rest of the combiner wars line) they'll keep the brand relevant for a lot longer.

He's a pretty spectacular figure. Well designed. Simple and FUN transformation. Looks great in both modes, and that head sculpt is perfect. Hard to fault him - definitely one of the best Megatron figures ever made IMO.

If I was being picky and put my 'adult collector' hat on, I could definitely fault him - those shoulders are a bit ugly, his leg proportions are off, the fusion cannon should collapse in more and the positioning of the cannon is a bit weird, no ankle tilt etc. But that would be missing the point - those 'faults' exist because Hasbro have chosen not to over-complicate things this time around and focused on making a fun toy first and foremost.

I wonder how many ROTF Leader Primes given to kids never made it to truck mode...?

I got about 30 toys from BBTS a few days ago and this is the first one I have opened.

Can I just say.... WOW!:D:eek:

I cant begin to describe just how much I enjoyed this figure! The robot mode is one of the best looking transforming Megatron toys we've ever had in my opinion! My only quibbles would be are that his legs are a tad lanky and the two little purple panels on his chest should be yellow. But otherwise a fantastic looking Megs!

The tank mode- freakin awesome! Huge, beefy, beautifully coloured, great weapons, and the tank tracks move! Just great!

Liked the transformation as well - not too complicated but not too easy - just the way I like'em.

As someone who owns nearly 50 different Megatron toys I would have to say this is about the best I've seen. It makes it look like Megs SHOULD have been a tank back in the G1 cartoon! Personally I wont be putting Autobot stickers on him as we all know the 'Megs as an Autobot' storyline will eventually run its course and he'll go back to the Cons.

A sign for me of a really good figure is when I can't decide which mode to display it in as both look so good and this Megs really fits the bill. I think it will be a long time before we see one better - almost a 'Megatron defining' toy for me. :)
