View Full Version : Which Lego themes do people prefer to collect?

I am wondering which Lego themes do people prefer to collect?
or is it something of everything.
I am focused on city sets, but have been collecting current sets from only the past couple of years. I am pretty excited to build up enough stuff to have a city setup on some tables. With city I'm excited about some of my own creations, but I'm not quite there yet. I have a couple of other sets from other themes, but the city theme is my base interest. I'm actually pretty new to this, I only started this year.

Just a reminder this poll has multiple options, please choose several if applicable. I voted city, but also voted space - If Lego ever revisits the space theme :)

Castle/Kingdoms

I just recently got back into (started) collecting Lego. I had some Castle sets when I was young so I've mainly stuck with that general theme. Now that Castle has been retired and the Hobbit/LOTR sets are done I can save money for the (hopeful) return of Castle/Kingdoms.

Or I can start with Pirates haha.

My older brother collects City and Star Wars. I bought him the new Slave 1 but I kind of want to keep it for myself :P

I do mostly City and Creator but I have a small unbuilt Star Wars collection. I have a bit of everything as I like to include little 'Easter Eggs' from every theme into my city layout.

I've collected City series before, it's all packed up now (thinking of selling these off actually) coz of space issues. Used to have them spread out - as in a whole city/town but I needed the space for my TF collection.

liege, so much of that looks familiar!

I dabble more than seriously collect, but I love a good Lego Castle. Got myself a bunch of 1980s space & love the Trains - which means I'm slowly building up City stuff so that one day when I have the space I can give the trains a backdrop.

hahahha and so it should, but a lot of them have been restructured since but most of the citizens in what was my lego town would be known to you... :p;)

I kinda collect a bit of everything. I have a soft spot for those Modular buildings though. They always get me.

City, or anything City Related (Some of the Superheroes stuff I collect).
Though nowadays I don't do it as much because my cats keep on destroying my sets

Super Angry Kitties?

The Creator sets seem to get better every year. Was never a fan of Technic as a young kid. However the pin/sideways building techniques used by the designers these days make Technic sets look pretty neat.

I'm a big sci-fi guy so generally the cool looking ships/vehicles that I like from various lines. Not really a line collector anymore. Very design specific.

This year I'm looking forward to the Ultra Agents Helicopter, the line's TRON bike, the DC Comics ship from the set with Darkseid and the Avengers Hellicarrier. I also collect a lot of Mega Bloks too b/c their Halo lines offer some very nice sci-fi vehicles.

Would buy more construction stuff but space is all so finite

Benny's Spaceship! Spaceship! SPACESHIP! is the first lego I've purchased in over 25 years.
I have a bucket at my parents that still has a lot of the stuff I had as a kid.

Transformers means I don't have the space time or money for Lego. I must stay strong:(

Sadly it's not yet been assembled and now sits in the garage waiting for a future opportunity.

I have Benny's spaceship, simply because its a homage to classics space! have not built it yet, but I'm waiting for the right moment. I have seen the reviews, it looks to be an impressive set.
With the city sets, while this is my focus I just could never buy everything, because I only buy the ones I think I like. Only vehicles at this stage, just cars and trucks, no buildings yet. I think I'll need to look at some creator sets for that. I'm not really interested in the police station, and fire station sets as this seems to be a reacuring theme. The sub-themes supposed to be out this year do tickle my fancy eg. the deep sea exploration, and space exploration. I hope Lego tries to do more of these in the future as it will keep Lego city interesting.

The spaceport theme is interesting. Lego has not released a shuttle stack for quite a few years now. The training jet could be based on the T-38 Talon which NASA has used since at least the 1960s. Shame the Shuttle nose is not brick built but at least the piece has more windows than the last one.

IMO one of the best looking police stations in recent years is 7744. It looks European with the response car and the station van. The car resembles a small hatchback. The van looks like a VW Transporter. The set also had alternate German 'Polizei' stickers!

I mainly collect the Marvel/DC, Star Wars & Castle sets. However if something catches my eye or there is a particular figure I want then no line is off limits. If I am being honest my LEGO collecting is mainly based on minifigs, I love the way LEGO combines so many of the toy lines I used to collect and allows me to own a large amount of those toys in the same scale. With the addition of 3rd party companies custom printing so many other LEGO sized figures, like for example characters from DBZ (which probably is a line that would never be picked up by LEGO) are able to be displayed with official LEGO heroes like the TMNT, etc. If you include the TF Kreons (and can somehow accept that TF's are the same size as you or I, excluding the combiners) then you have even more options for cross-over displays around your home.

I prefer the Classic Space sets, as well as Blacktron I and Space Police I.

Also like some Creator sets.

I mainly collect City sets but have slowed down a lot as the models begin to repeat early versions - I only get the newer model if it is a significant improvement on the previous.

I have a number of vintage Legoland sets too. Mostly from when I was a kid but I still pick up the occasional one - mainly trying to complete the 1978/79 range. Something about the aesthetic of the simple vehicles - many of which don't even accommodate the minifigure they come with - that I really like.

Also have every Indiana Jones set (except the BrickMaster and SDCC exclusives). I wish they'd come out with a few more sets for this theme! :D

I collect mainly from the licensed sets.

I'm also mainly a collector of the mini figures which can make things a lot tougher at times as I don't need the entire set but the individual figures still add up.

I got back in to LEGO when I bought the Ghostbusters set last year. It's amazing, and totally reminded me why I used to love LEGO so much.

I have a big box of the original series of pirate lego in 1989, this was the first lego I purchased with my won $$$ from working in woolies. I would love to build the sets up and buy the two pieces I could never afford - the fortress and the Barracuda. Dreams are free :D

In addition to Marvel which is what I collect normally I have a little Star Wars, a little Movie and I grabbed the Speed Champion cars when they were on sale for $15. I have in storage City, Aquanauts, Ice Planet, Race and some other random sets from when I was a kid.

I have a couple of Technic sets, but I haven't bought any in a very long time.

While they are enjoyable builds, the Lego System sets just blow them away.

That being said, some of the best builds I have ever had use both, usually with Technic providing a solid frame and some of the mechanics, and the System ploviding the details.

The normal Lego sets offer more variety and minifigures are cool! Quad bikes, excavators and dune buggies can get boring. Technic seems to be doing a lot of those lately
