View Full Version : Gen2 coloured Combiners?

We already have some individual Combiner Wars toys being redecos to make the most of the moulds, but now it looks like entire combiner sets could be coming soon, with a partial image of what looks to be Gen2 coloured Superion showing up from an unknown source on "4chan".
From the image (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/generations-classics-44/rumor-combiners-wars-g2-superion-incoming-182650/), we can see blue fists, blue Superion chest and a blue Air Raid... and since the original versions of those parts are black or white, this wouldn't be a colour distortion from inadequate lighting.
If this is true, it would not be surprising, as we are likely to see these popular moulds/toys milked as much as possible, but the question is if this recolour will be a regular release or a store/convention exclusive... because it looks to come with a character card for Superion, instead of for the individual toys, so this could be released as a box-set.
I think a Gen2 redeco of the Aerialbots and Combaticons (if they are coming soon), would be fairly popular, but I think a Gen2 redeco of the Stunticons and Protectobots would be highly sought after, as the original Gen2 toys were teased but never released, so would be a great stand-in for that.

I guess if they are heading down the Gen2 path, the odds of a Gen2 coloured Megatron improves... but it might need to be next year to give time to clear out all the Armada Megatron toys from stores.

G2 versions of the combiners would be awesome! Though I'm guessing they will probably be store/convention/etc exclusives. I can't see Hasbro releasing whole recolour sets of combiners that appeal to a fairly niche set of collectors, at mass retail. In Australia at least, my money is going to be on TRU exclusive. :/ Although - I hope I'm wrong!

I just hope its not a SDCC exclusive.
I'm not much for generations, combiner wars are my only chug figures now (saves the wallet from maketoys) and really not much for repaints (took me a long time to decide to get streak/smokescreen, and red alert... got rid of tigertrack in favor of um... another yellow lambo coming soon), but i could really go g2 superion/bruticus.
I love both colour schemes, and since i'd pre-order TT superion, then we had all those toy sales, i was fully intent on making my own g2 superion, but in the end decided i didnt have the talent to hand paint or make my own decals, so i'd be glad for official as it would be an easy yes for me, but if it is SDCC, it'd be an easy pass too.
Also the though of CW megs in his g2 scheme is a huge yes for me. I dont like the armada one (though i saw it customed as IDW fort max on ebay, was pretty sweet), and I have another um, figure, lined up for my megs (i almost never double up on characters), but G2 colour scheme is a different story.

As much as I love CW Superion, I'm going to give this a pass. Not a fan of the G2 colours and I certainly don't need a third CW Superion.

Pretty much anything released in G2 colours is me saving money.

G2 Devastator would be more appealing as I never understood why a group of construction vehicles were lime green and purple, as opposed to yellow or orange like real life construction vehicles. On the other hand G2 Superion is taking a realistic set of colour schemes and making them weird, so seems less appealing.
Against that, "realistic" colour schemes are BOOOOORRRRING, so if this ends up being the Oz Comicon exclusive and I can afford it at the time, I may yet get it. But it's not something I'm going to go out of my way to hunt down.

Well I remember the FOC G2 Bruticus being an 'exclusive' which I ordered and then he showed up on Shelves here so the chances are good.
Like others who have ordered the CW and the UW versions - my budget couldn't afford a 3rd Superion & Menasor

Yeah if all combiners are coming out...I would have no budget for the G2 ones :(
I have been saving already for 2months just to make way for UW01 Superion pre order

Now the question that needs to be asked... Will it be a gold Alpha Bravo or a gold Slingshot...
If it is a gold Slingshot he needs to disintegrate as soon as you remove him from the packaging, got to love GPS... :p

I hope for the G2 fans there's a non-GPS Superion. I don't like G2, but I cringe at G2 Superion not because of colours but rather how fragile he is.

I really hope that somehow they do both. For instance, include Alpha Bravo in the set and have Slingshot available as an exclusive elsewhere like they did with the Dinobots set and Slog last year.

That could be a BotCon exclusive... a G2 Superion in the boxset, and a bag of gold plastic crumbs as the attendee figure. :p

Sounds (and looks) cool. I probably wouldn't be able to afford it, even if it was at retail, since I'm still striving to buy the regular combiners. I hope Slingshot/Quickslinger gets his GPS referenced in his bio or something, or his weapon has some GPS function. All the G2 goodness needs to stay. I could always start a G2 classics collection, since things are shaping up for it:
-RTS Laser Optimus
-GDO Megatron (or possible a Leader Megatron redeco)
-United Bumblebee
-Generations Dreadwing
-FOC G2 Bruticus
-Ultimate Gift Set G2 Jazz
-Possible CW G2 Superion
-Potential CW G2 Devastator, Menasor, Defensor, Bruticus

I'm kind of doing something similar atm,
Have the Ultimate Gift Set Jazz & Optimus Prime, Gen Dreadwing and Gen Stealth Bombber Megatron with the G2 Reprolabels sets, Carzap and G2 Starscream from this years Subscription Service coming, along with G2 MP Bumble (though he may end up as G1ised version for shiny) and I'm looking to track down the G2 Ramjet repaint at some point in time. Have also ordered the Botcon Electro(ns) amongst my recent order from the TFCC store too.
G2 combiners would be a sweet addition.
EDIT: I have United Bumblebee too, could use him on the G2 shelf instead, just stick a G2 label on him...

It definitely looks like the front of a box set.
Saw some speculation that it could possibly be the Fan Vote combiner, which I could imagine, but there's enough visual cues to lean towards G2 Superion
Edit: Just saw the pic in a higher res via Tfwiki on twitter (https://twitter.com/tfwiki/status/596288919987167232), and the card says Superion so never mind the other speculation

Wasn't there a rumor earlier this year that G2 Devastator is a SDCC exclusive? I hope it's not going to be all G2 combiners at SDCC, but 5 G2 combiners over the next year would be cool for the G2 fans.

Since Hasbro didn't want to risk a Metrotitan deco for the SDCC Metroplex exclusive last year, I think there is zero chance that they would risk a Gen2 deco for any combiners as SDCC exclusives (if they do any combiners this year).
They play it safe for the non-collector "market" of SDCC, which means more effort on the packaging and some fancy bling on the toy, to keep it recognisable to the regular people that are at SDCC buying a lot of the various exclusives.
As such, we ended up with four versions of Metroplex and no Metrotitans. :(

^True i guess. Maybe just a green devy with dirt painted on for SDCC.

I think the G2 colourations for the combiners, especially Devastator, probably have more appeal than a recolour of a toy that was only released in Japan and backed up fiction that even by Japanese standards is tending towards the obscure. On the other hand, G2 Devastator is still recognisably the enormous and cool combiner people remember from their childhoods, but now he's in "real" colours and more resembles most real world construction vehicles. So I'd say the chances are probably significantly greater, simply because Metrotitan is such an obscure thing.

I agree that before 2012 Metrotitan was way too obscure to be considered appropriate as a $100-ish toy, but after the IDW comics included the various Metrotitans in middle of 2012 (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Primus:_You,_Me,_and_Other_Revelations), we had half a year of it becoming an obvious or expected redeco when Metroplex was announced six months later... and then we ended up with four versions of it in white when one could have been a full blue/pink redeco.
Unfortunately, three versions were for markets that needed it to be Metroplex (Hasbro, SDCC, TakaraTomy), but the Hong Kong convention should have been a Metrotitan redeco instead of a slightly different SDCC version (I think it was just stickers and figurines that were different).
But I guess we just wait and see, as it shouldn't be much longer for the SDCC exclusives to be announced, as I think it is only about 10-12 weeks away.

Unfortunately the Metrotitan (the blue and pink one) was just one amongst many in that story, so while the name had been popularised, the character was still deeply obscure. I agree Hasbro could have done a Necrotitan or similar for one of the redecos, but given the stuff-up with colouring for that character in the only story where he was a major character it really seems like a distant dream.
On the other hand, while G2 Superion and the other G2 Scramble City types are the definition of neon - or at least the one that gets used in the fandom - G2 Devastator actually uses colours more appropriate to the alt modes than the original. That's why I think we are more likely to see it. Of course, that raises a massive question about what's going on with G2 Superion over there, but that could easily be an exclusive along the lines of G2 FOC Bruticus.

So how do you then explain the Knights of Unicron set?
Yeah, that one was so far left-field, it's outta the ballpark. :p
But if I recall, last year's big two sets took the longest to sell out, as one was Movie toys (not exactly a fan favourite) that was missing a Dinobot, and the other was very unusual, even to most fans.
Actually, having a quick look on ebay, both of the big sets didn't hold their value at all, almost a year later. Most are selling for between US$120-170, and their original prices were US$185 for the rockband and US$160 for the Dinobots (which at least means the Dinobots can hold better value if they are now both fairly evenly matched on the secondary market).
I'm actually quite surprised at the secondary value of those two sets. SDCC sets used to hold their value and essentially become an investment, which is why us fans who want them would scramble to buy fast, before the prices keep climbing. But this time the two biggest sets failed to maintain their value at all... so how were we to know that 2014 was the year that we should have waited 9 months and get them dirt cheap. :(
Also surprising is that the Kreo set is the one exclusive that is still worth more than its original SDCC US$60 price (the cheapest sale price was more than the SDCC price by $10).
