View Full Version : Gen1 Console game - Devastation

After 30 years, could we finally be getting a classic Gen1 Universe computer game?
A game site has released some images (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/video-games-17/transfomers-devastation-video-game-revealed-183011/) of a game being done by Activision, that has a very cartoonish style of colouring, featuring Gen1 characters.
The official announcement will be later at a gaming convention called E3 (June 16-18). A pity that there has been no indication of Activision being at BotCon this year, to give the fans a chance to find out more about it.
No idea about when it is likely to be released, so in a few days time, hopefully we find out.
The game should be called Devastation, and some of the images show Devastator, so if it comes out by the end of the year, I guess Hasbro might have planned it that way to help sell the new big toy.
(I want to get my hopes up on this, but the WFC game was originally planned as a pre-Gen1 game for the fans before Hasbro thought it would be good to make it part of TFPrime to help the marketing of the toyline at the time... so I'll wait until there is some reviews out there of the game-play and story first.)

TFW has some leaked information on a upcoming Transformers video game call Devastation via a site called Pure Xbox. http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/video-games-17/transfomers-devastation-video-game-revealed-183011/
E3 starts on Tuesday morning at 2:30am AEST with the Microsoft's Xbox press conference. Hopefully we will see concrete info on Tuesday either there or in Sony's press conference later on Tuesday. If there's no info at either of those events expect info on Wednesday AEST as the E3 show floor opens.
EDIT 16/06/15: Live on youtube.com/e3 Geoff Keighley had an interview with some of the guys from Platinum Games talking about the game. Firstly, it's coming in "Fall", don't ask me what the exact dates of "Fall" are because American's don't know how to use a calendar. It will have 5 playable charactes, all Autobot, you can't play as Cons. It's not actually Geewun based, they are pulling from the G1 cartoon, IDW and Hasbro Generations.

I hope that they make a version for the PS3, because I'm not much of a gamer and I'm not going to buy a new console just to play one game. I bought a PS3 when FoC came out because I also wanted a Blu Ray player.
And please don't tell me that I'll get into gaming just by virtue of having a new console, because that totally didn't happen w/ the PS3. Someone even gave me a bunch of free PS3 games; I played one of them for like a month and haven't touched any of the games since. I'm more of a toy player than a game player, but I would like to get this game if it's available for my console. Otherwise, as nice as it looks, I'll probably pass on it.

I bought the PS3 specifically for WFC and the blu-ray feature. I'm more of a gardener than a gamer these days but if it's a really good G1 styled game I'll upgrade to the next gen for it :)

It'll probably be on PC, if it's gonna have a 360 SKU this late in that console's life cycle then it's gonna be a multi-platform game on all the platforms(except maybe Wii-U), game development is too expensive these days to not hit every major platform when you can without a platform holder funding it. Don't be surprised if there's a 3ds version with the same title but vastly different gameplay as well like Rise of the Dark Spark(which this is probably a sequel too) and all the other recent Transformers game too.

Meh, asking for a game to be on PC is different to someone stating that the game must only be on PC, or that the PC one is the one you can get because of better graphics and Mod Support, but I don't want to get into much of a rant since this is a Transformers forum

I hope that this game has more single player options other than a campaign mode. That's one thing that I felt was limited about WFC and FOC, because once the game starts losing popularity and less people are logging onto multiplayer servers... they kinda die off. :( Even if they just let you play multiplayer campaigns on your own with bots; that'd be a neat way for novice players (like me) to get some practice instead of being constantly pwned by more hardcore gamers, and more importantly, continue playing this game after others have stopped bothering with it.

If I wasn't excited before, I certainly am now!!!
Not because PlatinumGames developed Legend of Korra, but because they're the mob behind Bayonetta and Wonderful 101 which both had fantastic fast paced battle systems and are two of my favourite games from the past decade. :D

The market for PC disk based games has evaporated so they just release on Steam for the Australian market, which as we are painfully aware of is a really small market.

Console gaming is following suit with this console generation (I own only 3 disk for my Xbox One and PS4 but over 40 games digitally). It's why EB Games' parent company Gamestop acquired Think Geek two weeks ago and has an Apple Authorised Retailer called Simply Mac that they are expanding internationally.
The physical games business is going away and will only be around for games like Skylanders, Disney Infinity, Lego Dimensions, Rock Band and Guitar Hero that have to get physical goods to the consumer. All other games can be downloaded quickly and there is no need to visit a brick and mortor store to do it.

Yeah but there is 2 reasons why it will be a while to the Physical market is gone
1. Internet
Obviously not everyone has access to the internet, or at least doesn't have good internet. The one at my place likes to disconnect at times so if I'm downloading a game and the internet disconnects, don't expect me to be a happy bot
2. Licensing
The biggest problem with everything going to the Digital market is actually, Licensing. Why? Look at Netflix and Steam. When Deadpool came out it was only available on steam for a few months till Activision's license ended with making Marvel games so they had to pull all the games off store, which meant the only way you could get this game is through the Physical Market (if someone had it pre-owned though)

1. Just because you have bad internet doesn't mean everyone does. And if the bloody politicians can stop bickering about it and just finish the dam thing the NBN will give us great internet just like people in Europe and parts of Asia and Africa have. Also if your downloading a game and the internet disconnects the download doesn't start from scratch when you reconnect, it just starts again from where it was interrupted.
2. I can still buy digitally many games that are now out of print, like the Lego Star Wars games. And if Disney decides to not renew those licences then no big deal because I own them and can play them, delete them and redownload them as much as I like. Like it or not, physical retail is going away. At the store I work at every time we get a new planagram for the entertainment section Games, DVD's, Blu-rays and CD's get less space. People are not buying them, they are buying digital.

From TFW2005
Best Buy Canada have put up preorders for the new Transformers video game, Transformers Devastation, which we first learned about earlier today. From these listings, we can confirm that:
The game will be released on Xbox One, Xbox 360, Playstation 4 and Playstation 3
Five Autobots are confirmed to be playable - Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Wheeljack, Sideswipe, and Grimlock
The original voice cast will be reprising their roles, including Peter Cullen, Frank Welker and Dan Gilvezan
The game will feature five difficulty levels to provide an appropriate challenge to all fans
The plot involves Megatron harnessing Plasma Energy in an attempt to cyberform the Earth
The game is being developed by notable studio Platinum Games. It is reported that they will be bringing their signature fast action to the game, for instant robot to vehicle attacks, slam downs, counterattacks, and infinite combos
It is also reported that Transformers Devastation is coming on October 6th, 2015 - so not too long to go before we get to experience this game!
There's also a few more new images attached to the listings - one of which shows a purple Ramjet, so it looks like the Decepticon Air Warriors are also in as enemies to fight.

I have to disagree, the best part (for me) of WFC and FoC was the multiplayer aspects. I had alot of fun running/driving/flying around for the Co-Op story mode. Escalation was alot of fun and the classic death match was also a joy to play. When RoTDS can out with no co-op or death match options it nearly killed the game for me (the story and game play did the rest).

I really like the single player campaigns that have a good story, I get a feeling there won't be a whole lot of story in this. perhaps Valve should have a crack at a transformers licenced game, the only problem would be the wait until it gets released in 5 to 10 years... ;)

Any bonuses for preorders? It's usually a decider for me as to whether I go through EB or JB
To be honest, the vibe I get is I wouldn't expect DLC with it, though no doubt it will be cheaper to get from JB than EB, and probably cheaper to order from overseas.

The best way to go if your into disk is look at what Big W and Kmart are charging before you pick up your preorder at EB Games and then price match. I wish I could do that for digital, but hey, Steam taught me to hate disk after they fixed the issues in the HL2 era and turned it into a great service.

Loving the fact a lot of your enemies are proper G1 Decepticons! Soundwave with Ravage & Laserbeak, the Constructicons, the Insecticons (with Shrapnel using lightning!) etc. Also the Autobots seem to have their traditional weapons such as Sideswipe having a flamethrower (like his tech specs) and Optimus having an energon axe (like the cartoon).

The clips clearly show some bits of Prime and Bumblebee transforming into vehicle mode and moving around the battlefield (as well as the mid combo transforms).
Running around, bashing some bad guys and moving on is pretty much what all the movie games were about. And at least the first one of those was enjoyable IMHO.

i think they are trying to establish that transformation is not necessarily always something "separate" in the sense that you press a button and wait and watch the animation but something that can happen instantly and on the fly to include in the combos and action.
i think i read somewhere this is the company that made bayonetta? i've got that on ps3 and never got around to finishing it but it does have a pretty hilarious wacky appeal and it is pretty fun.

No-one makes better flashy beat em ups. I think Platinum is part Clover. I have a feeling that Clover got split up somewhere along the lines. (?). I played a demo of bayonetta, and despite me loving myself a good beatem up (and I always have), Bayo never really grabbed me that much.
Madworld did, and Okami is my favourite playstation game of all time. So I will def buy this, and hope it isn't too Bayo-esque.
The Transforming during attack is an idea I like. Not many TF games merge the two so well. In WFC/FOC it was often just an alternative to running. For all it's flaws, I thought that Revenge of the Fallen intergrated Transformation into general gameplay really well (although, again, much like a run) as it allowed you to do transform attacks, like a charge punch, and long jump.
Ever since that game, I've thought to myself that transforming mid fight is a cool thing, and entirely likely how a real Transformer would fight.
Imagine Blitzwing, gets a couple of sword slashes in, then immediately transforms after a brief enemy stun move and blasts them with his tank cannon up close! If I was one and could transform in under a second or so, given the opportunity, I would try and use everything at my disposal which would include my vehicle mode!
Looking forward to this!

I saw the 10 min PSN presentation on this game. Looks awesome and art direction is great but I have my concerns based on gameplay direction:
This seems like one of those 'Dynasty Warriors' Japanese button mashing games with zero skill requirements or variety. You are just in a field beating up dozens of swarming generic guys by mushing the buttons and running around. Then the level theme changes but otherwise gameplay remains the same for every level and of course, the occasional boss. By the looks of it, it also seems that every character fights the same way, from Optimus Prime to Bumblebee. So changing characters won't add any variety. Every level is going to be exactly the same and by third, it will just be boring.
In short, don't expect some epic story like WFC or FOC - It is likely to be just a button musher with nice graphics and animation.
I know this is a 'demo' build they are showing but they claim the game is due for release this year. That means that what we are looking at is likely close to the final game.

Yeah George Lucas and Michael Bay have taught me that life lesson. If you go in with low expectations, you can't be too disappointed. Yeah, it's cynical but in the current climate of accepted mediocrity, it is the sane thing to do IMO.
If the movie/game ends up being good, then it comes out as a great surprise and happiness all around. If it turns out crap, you were not too invested in it so it doesn't matter.

A couple more promo videos for the game have been released fo/from SDCC... one featuring Grimlock and another featuring Sideswipe.
The Grimlock video (http://au.ign.com/videos/2015/07/09/transformers-devastation-gameplay-demo-comic-con-2015) is about 10 minutes and includes a lot of actual game play of Grimlock and Optimus, plus has Gregg Berger on the panel, who is voicing Grimlock.
The Sideswipe video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gigM3-C4is) is about 3 minutes and just plays one of the levels that was in the Grimlock video, but this time Sideswipe is being used instead of Optimus.
So at least you have some choice in characters, within the constraints of the plot's requirements. A bit like War For Cybertron, which had a small selection of characters you could use in each level, but certain characters had to be included.
I love how they really put a lot of effort into it having a "cartoon" feel to it, while I also get a bit of an Andy Wildman vibe from the detailing.
The cartoon colouring means that the chapter videos look like part of the game, instead of being something that is more detailed and out of place.
The person playing the game while they were talking makes it look easy, but I would hope that it only gets easy after playing it for a while... so that it can be a bit of a challenge first time you play it all the way through, but then it is a bit of quick easy fun when you pop in the game later to fill in some time.

The US comics were good for using the abilities of the toys and weapons - at least partly because the same guy wrote both the comics and the toy's tech specs. Sometimes it meant the dialogue was a bit on the nose though. By memory the Stunticon's first appearance had a share of this, Dead End using his compressor-air gun definitely happened.

Even though it was the same voice actor, Big Grim sounded a bit different in FOC to me. They even did a half decent job getting a new voice actor for Wheeljack for this game, its just Sideswipe that sounds a bit off.
Yep - the G1ness has got me hooked - less than a month to go!

One of the 'perks' of Dynasty Warriors is that the story and events are loosely based on actual history which adds a bit of meaning and flavour to the riding around and beating up nameless mooks gameplay. It would be fantastic if this game were to do the same with some G1 Lore however first impressions of the scenery and the very limited scope of playable characters do not seem to indicate that this will happen.

Yeha, that was the only reason I gave it a try. Sadly it wasn't enough to keep me interested, and I love Japanese history.

I take it you gave Samurai Warriors a spin then? Because Dynasty Warriors is predominantly Chinese history (not that the gameplay between the two is any different)

The next character bio released on Facebook is Soundwave (http://news.tfw2005.com/2015/09/24/transformers-devastation-soundwave-character-profile-301846), who sounds like he will be a formidable foe in the game.
Plus a new game-play video on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7vy3s8oWvE), telling us about the "Challenge Mode", which has 50 stand-alone missions in addition to the full Story Mode.
It also mentions that there are five difficulty levels, as opposed to the three we had on most previous Transformers console games.

Soundwave in-game video on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeEbWE2o2Ic).
Sounds too high pitched to be Frank Welker, but I would be surprised if they got someone else to do his voice when they had Frank Welker signed on (or maybe they had to adjust it higher for it to be easier to hear on the game).

I think it looks OK, visually it is stunning and I hope they develop other more complex storied games using a similar art style.
I'm not convinced by the battle style, I have a feeling that after a while I'll get bored of that element of the gameplay. A lot of it looks great, but the transforming into a car in mid air and doing a burnout attack from 20 feet off the ground when there is nothing to drive against just breaks everything for me.
I've ordered the PC hardcopy that was linked a few posts up. Literally half the price of what it's going to cost through steam.

It's more about sticking to the 'rules' of the universe as developed. BB turns into a car that moves by developing friction against the ground, 20 feet up in the air there is no friction. if exactly the same attack was performed at ground level I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Yeah but it's the universe where sometimes Autobots can fly in robot mode, and other times they need jet packs.

I'm serious, the best Character Action Games are made by Platinum/Clover. Their only average one was Korra and that was a budget downloadable title.

Bear in mind that Devastation was developed in Japan (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/PlatinumGames), and physics takes a back seat in Japanese video games (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5SnYt7fo1U). ;) I see these attacks as kinds of super-combo attacks. ;)

I've been recently watching some interviews with the game developers, and they were saying that the people who developed this game love playing with Transformers toys, and that they would even have days when everyone would bring a Transformer toy to work and they'd just get down and play with them. :D And the developers have stated that they have based many of their models on existing toys. I think that this is incredibly awesome, and that their love for the toys seems to shine through in the game. As one previewer has stated, the game play is reminiscent of toy play. And so many of the game characters are clearly inspired by existing toys or the G1 cartoon model (which in turn are replicated by Masterpiece toys) -- so it feels like I could easily replicate most characters in this game with my Classicsverse and MP toys! :D

Yeah, I was surprised too that we were two days behind the US release (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=21620), when the last few TFs games have been same day, which gave us a 8-12 hour headstart.
The lack of bonus stuff this time does suck, and I couldn't even find any promotion of it at a couple of EBs near me... not even on their weekly upcoming/preorder flyer that they will have stuck on the wall somewhere.
And Activision in Australia are impossible to contact about games, so I can't even communicate with them to see what promotions they are actually doing, or what can be done.
Because if these non-Movie games bomb in sales, we might only end up with the odd movie based games in future... and we all know how poorly those sorts of games rate in general.

5th October 2015, 06:56 PM
Preorder "digital bonuses" are evil anyway and should not be encouraged. Swag is ok but witholding/locking content is a bad marketing practise leading to poorly finished games.
But yes the lack of general advertising for the game does concern me.

There's a review in this month's Gameinformer magazine (which I was flicking through at EB while pre-ordering), and it was just a page with very little indication of the reviewer even playing it. It was more about the Transformers characters and brand... and I didn't see anything written about the game that hasn't been made public months ago.
I remember older TFs games having multi-page reviews, with images and details you'd only get from playing the game (I'd often buy those magazines to keep, just because of that Transformers game review)... but this one just wasn't worth it.

just watched one review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WskrtbT6wow&feature=youtu.be
basically it's really short (campaign is less than 5 hours, "challenge modes" can extend things) and the environments are very repetitive however the combat is solid and nostalgia is high and very well handled. if you love transformers AND platinum style games then it's a buy now but if you are more one or the other it may not be worth the asking price at the moment...personally i think I am going to wait for a sale.

Some concept artwork from the game (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/transformers-devastation-concept-art-battlechargers-shockwave-soundwave/34012/), including the Battlechargers, who I thought was Wheeljack when I scrolled down to the car mode... so maybe a Wheeljack toy out there somewhere has a redeco potential.
Only a day from its official release in America, people have apparently already been playing out the game, so there are probably reviews or play-through videos online by now. (I'm not going to hunt them down before playing the game.)

Some of the HK boys have been posting up their gameplay from the PS4 and it looks awesome! It is one of the few games I could happily just sit and watch someone else play for the sheer enjoyment although I do plan to pick it up for my son at some point.
Also looks like if this one is successful there is scope for a sequel/add-on's if one of the guys who has already clocked the game is to be believed (I won't spoil)...

you can change the difficulty setting to scout .... should make it easier, it basicly a button masher game any ways ..... i get really annoyed when that happen ... the boss is impossible to kill and the other are just so easy... well i past the first area ....it pretty long ... there no tutorial for the upgrades and so, but it pretty easy to work out... they action is quiet good and the graphic i just love that cell shade style... the voice is like how i remember them so they did a good job of that . It getting pretty repetitive but at least your seeing different character turning up so it more of a fan game.... wheeljack just join my party :)
