Im trying to install windows 10 on a computer I bought last month.
It is taking forever
The actual installation has been 'stuck' on 55% for a fair while now
Hope it sorts itself out soon
Its like, well, watching windows load...

I signed up for it but am having second thoughts as my 7 year old laptop is slow as a pig. Also my wife needs it for work so she can't really afford for me to mess it up unnecessarily.
Keen to see how it all unfolds.

I'll worry about it if it's the current preferred OS if/when I eventually update my computer.

Was thinking about doing it. I rather dislike windows 8.1 which I am saddled with now, so as long as the update doesn't kill my lappy, I don't really have anything to lose.
I hear it's better than Vista, which I've had to put up with... so.. can't be that bad.

My computer is slower but im not 100% sure why
Its better than 8
Everything is better than vista :D
Well its now windows 10.
You have to upgrade first, then later, you can do a clean install if you want.
Its just nice to have a proper start button again

Windows ME users would like to have a serious discussion with you. :p
I'm holding out until I get a new machine. My laptop is four and a half years old (and replaced the hard drive December last year) so while Windows 10 SHOULD run well on it, I don't see the sense in installing a O/S over the top of an old one (I'm more of a fresh install kinda guy) onto a older machine.
Plus there will be things they'll have to sort out.

Right with you dude. :)
I've been using Windows 8 & 8.1 sparingly up until about a month and a bit ago when I built a new rig and bought my own copy of Win8.1, having used WinXP primarily for over a decade.
Now I'm just waiting in the Win10 cue in order to ride this new wave; I'm not liking the forecast mandatory updates for "Home"-users (There are going to be issues there, be prepared and backup!), but the reasonable amount of research I've done and the assurance from my salesman Brother tells me one should expect a better PC experience than Me, Vista, 8 and 8.1. :o:D
After all, the Marketing Department didn't make this one! ;):p

I actually found out how to install in first ...:)
you have to change your region and keyboard setting to US
then download which version upgrade you want....
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
the upgrade is quite good... but I had to reinstall my graphic driver ...
and my optical 5.1 setting doesn't work ...only stereo ....they the two major bugs....
I went and did a fresh install now as well after I upgraded to get your win10 key ....
and I tell you a fresh install is a pain... the graphic drivers wont install until I found out you have to do and advance install and not express setting... :(
and there a lot of customising the set up to be used properly ...
Now I need a mic so I can talk to Cortana .....:D :p

lol ....cause it new !! you need change to excite you ...and it actually more stable ....
With win8 ....I never had a crash...When a program crashes it just resets back to the whole desktop ...which I love... I remember with win7 ...when it crashes it just freezes then you have to manually restart the whole computer
Well I try Contana today.... I was expecting her to do stuff like open folder and run program.... no such luck... :( it mainly for the phone , so she can just basically search thing for you using Bing :( and open apps like weather and calendar... same a siri but worst cause siri responses are heaps funnier ....
been using Edge for browsing as well...and the draw feature there but you never going to use it so that more for the phone and tablet ....
internet explorer is still in there but is hidden...
The only thing that a bigger notice is that win10 load a lot quicker that 8.1

These are my first impressions as it only finished installing like 1am last night:
- It failed to recognize my Nvidia card properly so it gave it a generic 'VGA' driver so everything looked big and crap. I had to download and re-install the driver.
- Like Morg, I found it to be slower - It seems to spend more time crunching on the HDD - However when I check Task Manager, I don't see any single service/application taking up so many resources to cause it. Hoping that is only a passing thing otherwise it may be a bit of a killer - You expect at least the same level of performance as Win7 on a decently specced PC that is above the recommended requirements.
- The interface is familiar to Windows 7 users so not annoying as crap like Win8. Start menu that opens an apps/explorer folder - Easy and familiar enough
- This is aesthetics only so open to opinion - I don't like the theme in which windows look 'simplistic' like if drawn by a pen and a ruler (try opening calculator on win10 for an upfront example). To me it still looks like trying to emulate an Iphone but retro which to me sucks ass. This is the 21st century, I don't need a hipster OS which wants to be retro but does it wrong.
- You can't just magnify Window content (like Apps) with Ctrl-plus (+). You need to have this annoying 'magnifier' app window floating around which you have to click on to activate instead of shortcuts (as far as I know).

I've found that my own copy of Win 10 has tried to install and failed... 7 or 8 times.
(I know there's a work around, but I'm more interested in finding out the cause ;))
Having this occur I think may be somewhat of a blessing, however, as the number of issues and qualms that've been popping up since release suggest that rushing head-long (Even with knowledge onboard) might be worth avoiding until such a time they're remedied &/or rectified.
Funny that apparently 90% of I.T. businesses in Australia are looking to adopt the O/S (http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2015/08/windows-10-is-coming-to-your-work-resistance-is-futile/), its "Free" upgrade cost being a factor I wonder?

I installed mine last night. Annoyingly I magaed to opt for the "Express install" which allowed W10 to get all stalky on my arse and means I have spent longer than I want to roaming around looking at all the nooks and crannies so I can opt out of all their stalky bizzo.
So far it's ok.
Better than Vista.
I just wish I could easily uninstall the useless apps that I will never use. Xbox, for example....
Also still annoyed it auto logins to the last user if you have multiple user accounts from a shutdown. sigh. But upgrading went smoothly, aside from that. I probably missed the express option opt out as it was initially looking at me in Japanese at the time.

Agreed. Having Vista as a comparison point sets the bar way too low. It should be compared to Win7 as that is probably the last Windows that was decent and most people prefer.
I have been using it for a week now and I no longer get the slow downs or HDD crunching. It seems to have settled and works just as well as Win7. I still prefer the aesthetic look of 7 but as long as it is functional, I don't care.

Yea, since it's not actually free. You are transferring your old OS license to it. ;)
I got win 10 pro on one of my laptops on the weekend. Oh man, what a cluster mess of an operating system. Already loaded with shovel ware and just, well, a gigantic mess.
I'd happily install vista over the top of it. BTW, there was nothing wrong with vista. It's just as slow as win7 was. Win8.1 ftw.

Win8.1 ftw.
I have a new found respect for you. I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that about 8.1. IMO, it's actually not that bad and once you configure everything, it all runs smoothly.
MV75
18th August 2015, 07:06 PM
Yea, all I had to do with win8.1 was to disable the swipe screen, set it to load to desktop on login, and to have the start button go to Apps instead of start. Have Apps sorted by category. No 3rd party solutions required.
Pretty painless once I figured it out. :) Plus I think the best start menu ever is to right click the start button. That context menu has everything I really need to get to. Win10 has it too. It's normal start menu is less than useless.
So I have the best of win8.1, which is pure speed, and the best of win7, which is everything works, and I get to miss the worst of what 10 currently has, a gigantic shovelware mess, and edge.

To me, Windows 8 was terrible and annoying. Windows 10, I don't see as so bad but aside from the Netflix App, I don't see any improvement on 7 so I would agree with the sentiment from Win7 to Win10 - Lipstick on a pig, ugly hipster lipstick too.

From the little I know about 10..
- it constantly gathers data from you and uses it to send ads your way and for onselling.
- it scans your drives and can automatically delete files MS chooses.
And was it an automatic download for 8.1 users? Because i hear it has been putting people over their d/l quotas. That is a breach of trust right there as it was not what automatic updates were for. A lady at work has now unwisely (but i don't blame her) turned automatic updates off.
I have Vista and was looking for 7 but is 8.1 the best before big b10ther came along?

I think that only happens if you choose the Default options in the initial configuration. It asks a lot of questions about sending stuff to Microsoft including what you mentioned. I simply chose No on all of them.

So has anyone actually used it? Is it worth it?

To be perfectly frank, so far Win10 is a bit of lipstick on a pig (and ugly lipstick at that). There is almost nothing that Win10 does which Win7 doesn't already do. The only benefit that I can think of from a practical perspective is the Netflix app which grants you the ability to use surround sound speakers instead of 2.1 on Win7.
Having said that, Win10 has been getting a lot of harsh criticism, a lot of it unfounded. I did not have much issue installing it with the only problem being Graphics card drivers that I needed to download and install - That is a default for any gamer so not just a Win10 thing. It also took a couple of days to settle down, at first it was a bit slow with the HDD constantly crunching and then it settled.
Now it's working fine and I can do anything I could on Win7 only that I don't like the interface that much and default theme sucks. So yeah, unless you are curious, there isn't much incentive to upgrade.

The ads thing can be opted out of if you chooses default as well. It's a bit of a fiddle, but doable. It wasn't an auto download for 8.1 unless you reserved your copy for it, and you had to go through a different procedure to get it, as opposed to it being in the general updates page.
I think that only happens if you choose the Default options in the initial configuration. It asks a lot of questions about sending stuff to Microsoft including what you mentioned. I simply chose No on all of them.
Or google the opt out thing as well.
I've installed it on my new laptop and had one issue with it and thats because I didn't pay attention to when I installed it, and that was because it was in Japanese, I accidentally accepted default install. And it likes to reinstall apps I take out. I'd really like to delete forever some apps (never going to use the xboxx app for example).
I like it more than 8.1, but overall, I think Win7 is better than both. So if you're on 8/8.1, do it. If win7, I'd stick with that ;)

A couple of days ago Win10 downloaded an update that caused my PC to go on an infinite boot/crash cycle. Tried repairing and it wouldn't budge. Anytime it loaded any aspect of windows, the crash loop cycle would start.
I was forced to remove it and go back to Win7....

Don't forget that this is going to be forced shovelled onto xbox ones as well.
The only advantage here is that it should give dx12 the development boost it needs, the ONLY reason to use win10. But in the end it's still windows 10.
Buy a console, buy a ps4.

I'll stick with Windows 7 until win10 gets their act together, the PC is still my gaming platform of choice.

To each their own. I hate Win8, to me, it's another Vista.
Generally speaking, we are basically trying Win10 so we know it is a bit experimental but since it is something being peddled to the public as the next awesome thing, one would expect some quality control issues to have been sorted before publishing.
As it is now, it is too unstable to be any good and there isn't much of an excuse for that as it is running on a very similar platform to Win7. Just poor quality control which leads me to not trust it until it ages more.
