MP-21R Red Bumblebee

A scan of one of this month's Japanese hobby magazines has surfaced (http://news.tfw2005.com/2015/08/21/masterpiece-red-bumblebee-300069), with a reveal of the next redeco of the MP-21 Bumblebee toy - a red version.

The translation apparently says Red Bumble(bee), NOT Cliff(jumper).
It sorta homages the original Gen1 Bumblebee toy being released in yellow AND red, not the usual lazy stand-in for Cliffjumper.

A release date of December, at 5940 yen.


That gives us one per month from Japan for the last seven months of the year, with a couple being limited edition releases.

August - Blue Bluestreak (limited release)
September - Tracks
October - Road Rage
November - Thundercracker (limited release)

Maybe this means they have a MP Cliffjumper in the works, or they just don't want to prevent one by having a mere red Bumblebee as Cliffjumper.

Then again, they did it with Ultra Magnus (MP-2 as a mere redeco of Optimus, and then a new mould MP-22)... but it was a ten year gap, so back when MP-2 was released, TakaraTomy probably never expected they'd ever do a proper Ultra Magnus. Now though, the line is so expanse and popular, any toy character is pretty much popular to not want to risk ruling anyone else out in future.
This just helps them milk the Bumblebee mould before moving on to milking other moulds. :p

I think the Red Bumblebee is a great idea, it's hard to say if Cliffy will be in the works due to licensing but if they do release him I guess we will see the whole run that they have done with Bee, G1, G2 , G1 Alt colour :p I don't mind the extended use of moulds.

Ironhide doesn't have a release date yet. Probably in the first few months of 2016.

As for the history of the 1984 red Bumblebee toy, there have been a few different stories floating around through the years... including one about the red Bumblebee (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Bumblebee_%28G1%29/toys#Generation_1), yellow Cliffjumper (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Cliffjumper_%28G1%29/toys#Generation_1) and Bumper (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Bumper_%28G1%29) toys being an excess of stock of the Minibots from before Transformers started, that Hasbro bought up just to stick in their own packaging.

But according to one source (http://www.tfarchive.com/fandom/interviews/george_dunsay/george_dunsay_interview.php), it was intentional, to help pad out the product line in the first year (at least in the eyes of Retailers who wouldn't have noticed that they were the the same toys).

The Volkswagen brand has seemingly been squeamish about their licencing (search for "war toys"). There are no Volkswagen's in Need For Speed for instance, which involves breaking traffic laws and running from cops and generally doing illegal activities. The other brands that Volkswagen owns however have no issues like Lamborghini, Audi and Bugatti. Porsche is also owned by Volkswagen but they are more picky with their licencing, not because they are squeamish like Volkswagen, but because they think the Porsche brand is super valuable and as such they don't licence it out to just anyone. There are only two licences for Porsche in videogames for instance. One is held by EA who make Need for Speed and Real Racing the other is a more restrictive licence held by Microsoft who makes Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon. The more restrictive licence means Microsoft has to sell the Porsche cars in a separate expansion pack, normally $20+. I could see Porsche requiring TT to charge a higher price for CJ or Jazz than a regular MP.

They always do cheap repaints, its their business strategy. But good point CJ is actually a Porsche forgot about that. I dont like it because its just lazy. BB wasnt imo worthy of the price tag to begin with. The only repaint i've bought is mp 12g which is not really a repaint but thats the level of accessories i expect to get for me to buy the same figure again.

Sunstreaker is a completely different toy to Sideswipe. No amount of retooling would be sufficient to turn one into the other.

A bit off topic, but I've been acquiring the different repaints of G1 cabs of Optimus Prime / Ultra Magnus. There's room in my collection for more repaints of this mould. :D

I love how some of us are getting cranky over Tak/Toms regular recolouring/tooling of moulds, this method of toy selling has been happening since G1 Transformers were first unleashed on our innocent eyes in 1984, so why should we be surprised when they do it in the not so innocent 2010's :p

The Masterpiece Bumblebee figure is an ingenious and incredibly fun piece of design and engineering, wholly worth reissuing as many times as the steel molds will allow. :cool:

This red punch-buggy doesn't do much for me personally, so I'll be passing over him; whilst he does have historical G1 ties in both toy & cartoon forms, I'd be much more inclined to buy a repaint in "The People's Car" Black, a Bugbite (White with Purple Highlights) as well as a Wasp (2-tone Green with Purple Optics)! ;):D

Keep in mind we've gone from getting one new release (including repaints) every 1-2 years to one release a month. Looking back over the last 2-3 years, Takara have milked every mound for repaints. It should be no surprise it is still happening. It will happen with the next mould. And the next. And the next. Prepare yourself now to avoid disappointment.

Also keep in mind that redecos and minor remoulds are a necessary evil if you don't want to be paying significantly more for your Transformers toys.
"Milking" is really only applicable if there have been several uses of a mould and a new redeco is hard to explain or has little or no history as a toy character (like black redecos, themed redecos, or more specifically, Acid Storm/Sunstorm versions of any Seeker mould once they've done the basic three).

The first two or three uses of a mould is what keeps it below a certain price-point... and if they are different established characters, it's not as bad as a fourth or fifth redeco that has a weird colour-scheme to it (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Rot_Gut_%28Prime%29).

TT is taking a bit slow IMO in terms of repainted.
Like said get it done altogether. Make it exclusive.

It'd just be a red Bumblebee with Cliffjumper's head. :o I can accept this for non G1 Cliffjumpers (e.g. Animated, Alternity etc.), but when it comes to the exacting standards of Masterpiece, I would only accept an MP Cliffjumper if he were done properly; i.e. retooled to give him the Porsche 924 body. And I wouldn't blame TakTOM if they re-released MP Cliffjumper in yellow, since it's been around since 1984.

It probably wouldn't be viable for TakaraTOMY to retool the mould again with the Mazda 323 (http://users.tpg.com.au/adslk8eg/323.jpg) body for an MP Bumblejumper (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/c/c4/G1Bumper_toy.jpg). Maybe that's where the third party makers might focus their efforts on. ;)

I don't have an MP Bumblebee, but I would imagine it would have to be a very heavy retool to make an MP Cliffjumper out of it. The side profiles are very different:

They did do the previously (on the G1 mould) eHobby Tigertrack. They may very well do Bugbite.

The Microchange (Japan) and Estrela (Brazil) fit somewhere in between the Argentinian and U.S version.

It's an exclusive for somewhere in Japan, so isn't a regular release MP toy... so isn't likely to show up on HLJ.

Looks like someone at Takara has some 1337 digibashing skills. Out with Spike, move Bee a few steps and crunch that RGB palette. Of the 3 BBs this has the least inclusions. Was it much cheaper?

There are about 4 items in the same delivery but ordered at different times. That might be the reason.
