They've been busier than we thought! Still no damn Galvatron though! :p

Maybe some will choose to keep their 3rd party versions though, the scale looks to be different (maybe Ironhide instead of Prime's height?)

Shockwave looks very simple (to transform), unlike other Masterpiece toys that seem to find ways to add extra complexity to them... so maybe that simplicity was intentional to make it more affordable without relying on redecos paying for the mould.

The chest for Rodimus looks wrong though, but there is often some tweeking between grey-scale stage and the released toy.

That's four new moulds for 2016 now (Ironhide, Optimus Primal, Shockwave, Hotrod), which is already more than the average (only 2 in 2015, only 3 in 2014, and only 3 in 2013 when counting the cassette 2-pack as one)... I'm starting to think that that will be all, and the rest for 2016 will have to be redecos.

Since these are only in grey-scale stage and Optimus Primal probably isn't even that far yet, these two would probably end up being mid-2016, and Primal at 3/4 of the year (based on the timeframe of grey-scale to release of past toys).

Wicked. As an owner of first-run Quakewave, this is excellent news. Quakwave was never going to last forever but I'm still keeping him becasue its a super solid figure.

It's a bit early to say that the transformation is simple. We have no idea how it does it or even what the alt mode looks like. It will be interesting to see how they do the cannon though and if it parts-forms like Quakewave. I hope that it's somehow all-in-one.

Hooray! :D:cool::D

Since when there was going to be licensing issue with shockwave?
Since forever, because the original Shockwave toy was actually a toy known as Astro Magnum or Galactic Man (affectionately referred to as "Shackwave") that was owned by another company called ToyCo (a company which still exists today). Evidently TakaraTOMY have managed to secure the rights for this toy's likeness from ToyCo, which is great news (I also wonder if they're now able to reissue G1 Laserwave). It doesn't necessarily mean that all other non-Takara moulds are necessarily available to Takara now though; it all depends. Takara have demonstrated a willingness to use non-Takara moulds when they obtain the rights to them; e.g. shortly after merging with Tomy (who owned the rights for Mechabot-1 (Omega Supreme) and whatever pre-TF Sky Lynx was called), TakaraTOMY reissued Omega Supreme and Sky Lynx.

The Valkyrie VF1S (Jetfire) design is still owned by Big West, and of course, the Macross franchise is still recent/current. IIRC even the original G1 Jetfire toy was never released in Japan. I wouldn't hold much breath for reissues of other non-Takara moulds of TFs that were never released in Japan or ever appeared in Japanese canon; e.g. Deluxe Autobots, Deluxe Insecticons etc. (as much as I would really love to see these toys be reissued; especially the Deluxe Insecticons which were never released in Australia). :(

Interesting I never thought shockwave is still owned when a cartoon was already made I would have thought a law suit would have surfaced.

As for VF 1s, I hope takara Knows this was stupid as it looks nothing like jetfire or sky fire.. They should not make those toys again.

IIRC there was no pre-TF Sky Lynx. The project was still in development stages when Takara/Hasbro secured the rights. I think the project was called Dino Shuttle, but it was never the toy's actual name.

Cool, hoping there's still a bit more work to be done on both though, but nice to see Shockwave finally get a decent official toy.

I wouldn't replace my Quakwave toy with him, based on what I've seen so far, but that doesn't rule out having both. Shockwave is one of my favourtie characters so the more the better, I still long for a decent CHUG interpretation.

Yeah, seems like quite the coincidence that this prototype is revealed a day after the latest 3rd party Shockwave prototype from Cloud 9 (http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-3rd-party-discussion/1046087-cloud-9-quakeblast-masterpiece-styled-shockwave.html).

Nearly fell of my chair at work earlier..great news

Shockwave probably is more complex than he looks, but if Hot Rod is in scale with the Autobot cars in alt mode, Shockwave looks a bit too short.

Hot Rod's proportions look better than the silhouette, but his chest looks weird. Maybe it's just not pegged in properly.

^Good point. :) Then Hasbro could also release it and there's nothing Harmony Gold can do about it. (http://generalsjoes.com/2013/10/10/hasbro-and-harmony-gold-reportedly-settle-lawsuit-over-sdcc-exclusive-jetfire/) :D

It's because it's tapering towards the mono eye rather than just a straight even hexagonal shape head. makes it more sleek. :)

Hmmm he seems a bit short though... would this really be for MP or for the Generations series?

Lord_Zed
26th September 2015, 12:26 AM
This Shockwave looks a lot more toon accurate than the 3rd party one, interestingly that can be both a good and bad thing. He's got the g1 silhouette down pat, but that also makes him kinda retro and very simplistic on the surface detail. Much like Ironhide he has a giant groin section which is off putting but entirely accurate to the source material.

It would be cool, but I don't like the odds, as this design is slavish to the old G1 style to the point of looking retro.

That would seem... logical.

Given they announced Beast Convoy a while back without a toy to show, it seems like TakTomy are more proactive about letting fans know what's coming up in the future, than they have been. I don't expect to see Shockwave to the later half of 2016 myself.

So Jetfire might be out, but a toon accurate Skyfire might be doable...

It is doable, but Hasbro keeps doing "robotech" versions of Jetfire just to see if they can get away with it, and hope to set a precedent that earns them the legal ability to do toys that are similar to what Harmony Gold currently owns the rights to.
It's all about corporate ego.
Hasbro could have had cartoon/comic accurate Jetfire toys for ages, but keep modelling their creations on the original toy, which no one recognises from Transformers fiction, only from Robotech fiction.
The original Jetfire toy was indeed great (it is one of my favourite Gen1 toys), but I want a comic/cartoon Skyfire toy, and it's been 30 years and Hasbro would rather see how far they can infringe on the Robotech IP - like the SDCC GIJoe Jetfire toy that was supposed to be homaging the comic Jetfire and should have had the single-use, exclusive jet thruster-pack designed to look like Skyfires, but no, they wanted to see if they could get away with something that looks like the Robotech jet fighter thruster-pack... and as a result, fans are made to wait a little longer on the sidelines of Hasbro's little mindgames with Harmony Gold.

In honesty, I am NOT prepared to buy Shockwave though I thought Galvatron was going to be out first.

My plan was to retire after Mirage, Hound, and Jazz. < Yes I know there will be more but that was it.

I am a bit unsure how far I want to collect mp line. The good thing is they arent overly costly, but I am out of space for my cabinet and I might become a MISB collector. OMG. lol

I don't support Harmony gold, I do however think that for mp concern, Jetfire should not be looking like the G1 toy as it was not the true reflection of the toon accurate. By all means make the toon accurate version but have G1 colours as an alternative.

I wanted to see if it is being called Laserwave (the original Gen1 name in Japan) or Shockwave (the westernised name they have more recently been using).

And from two of the photos I was able to piece together the name... as レーザーウェーブ (Laserwave)... continuing the trend of Japanese Masterpiece toys using their original Japanese names.
But the name tag also has four kanji characters as a prefix that are too blurry for me to work out (someone who is more skilled at Japanese might be able to narrow down the characters from the images Tober and Kurdt posted up, which are quoted below). They rarely use kanji in Transformers names... even as prefixes. Usually it will be the name on a themed multipack that uses kanji.

(this next paragraph is now in the MP Hotrod news topic, so post comments in there... it is just included here because the subject matter paired with the paragraph above)

And there is just enough of Hotrod's nameplate in that second photo below to work out that it is indeed being called ホットロディマス Hot Rodimus (the Japanese equivalent of Hotrod) and not Rodimus Convoy (the Japanese equivalent of Rodimus Prime - which was the name for MP-09, which means that this isn't "Hotrod Version 2" like some sites are calling it, because even Hasbro called their version of MP-09 Rodimus Prime, despite being Targetmaster Hotrod)

People seem to be too obsessed with taking photos of the toy for some reason instead of the nameplates. :p

I'm not sure I really understand that sentence. Who said anything about him turning into a hand blaster anyway? By that logic Shockwave should be bigger since he turned into a massive space gun in the cartoon.

I'd just like him to be in scale with the other 3 MP Decepticon leaders so they look good displayed together. Having an MP Shockwave half the height of MP Soundwave makes no sense, especially given the price

Yeah. I know. I own it. It's a big ass space cannon that was big enough for kids to hold like a gun. The MP line is all about being cartoon faithful - not original toy accurate. And the new scale line sucks if this is how they are going to apply it

I very doubt masterpiece is about cartoon accurate 100%. There isn't anywhere in line to say Hasbro masterpiece or Takara have distinct toon accurate colours.
The latest starscream mp by hasbro is toy accuate G1.

I did argue before that the masterpiece line should have been split catgories so collectors know there is G1 toy and toon accurate version.

Might be to early to throw judgement as I have not seen Hot Rod or Shockwave standing next to mp-10 or soundwave at this stage.

Both hot rod and shockwave look to be taller than tracks, who is already taller than the other car bots in robot mode.

From what I understand, the car mode of hot rod would be similar to the size of the other cars, but that doesn't mean that the robot sizes were going to be the same.

I expect Shockwave to be taller than the Autobot cars, because the original size-chart for Gen1 had Shockwave just at Optimus's shoulder height...

http://www.toycollectors.com.au/botcon/bc05/d38.jpg

I think Hotrod might be a little taller than the Autobot cars, but probably not more than a head taller. (being in front of them in the display case and next to a tall toy can have a bit of an optical illusion effect)

Unlike G1 Comic Shockwave (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/0/01/Allthisandcivilwar-arethey.jpg) who was the same size as Scorponok. Although admittedly, Comic Scorponok isn't nearly as big as his cartoon counterpart. ;)

AKA Cybertron administrator, toon Shockwave is essentially Megatrons head bureaucrat. :D
^This (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-ItfWY3xMQ). :)

G1 Comic Shockwave may be the more interesting/memorable character, but this character is entirely different from G1 Cartoon Shockwave, which is what Japanese audiences would be more familiar with. Hypothetically speaking, if Hasbro AP were to consider releasing this toy here, I'd be inclined to re-write his bio based on his comic persona.

Lord_Zed
27th September 2015, 11:56 PM
Yeah I remember that Dr Smoov toon well, sadly true cartoon Shockwave is a terrible shot, while comic Shockwave essentially defeated all the Autobots with one shot (and some cunning) in the comic.

Like Soundwave, Shockwave is basically a whole different character when comparing the G1 cartoon and Marvel Comic, it's hard to reconcile the differences when writing a bio for the character.

If Shockwave does end up a bit shorter than Optimus, then I'll designate my 3rd party one as his more intimidating comic persona.

This was an unlikely official release so the fact that it's happening is great news!

As has been mentioned, MP Shockwave looks very cartoon inspired so that will certainly have a good G1 cartoon crowd appeal. They must have gotten a license or worked out some sort of legal loophole but nonetheless, it shows that they are willing to look into and work out licensing for G1 Non-TakTom molds for MP releases.

I wonder if Quakewave and other 3P releases made them realize the market demand to make it happen?

Or this is a indirect attack at 3p that they will loose their slice of the cake every time they come out with new stuff that the fans want. Ideas also can be stolen as takara has leading rights to Transformers anyway.

Estimates are based on their size compared to previous toys, with the disclaimer at most places that the price is likely to be adjusted when it's officially known.
This is just the routine of online stores to lock in people first... so that it locks in the lazy people, who will just stick with that order unless they find a significantly cheaper option later (not just a little cheaper) to make it worth the hassle of ordering somewhere else and cancelling the old order. (you might for a couple of dollars, but many wont, especially if it is going to be part of the larger order)

BBTS doesn't take money for pre-orders, but if an online store does do it as a policy, they would also be charging for Shockwave... so it wouldn't just PC on this occasion.

Besides, it looks like 30+ people were willing and happy with this policy.

Also a grey prototype wins over a shadow or just a toon painted figure like ultra Magnus if I recalled correctly.

Is a gamble I guess? How many here feels that hot rod for $85 isn't cheap?

How I get $135? I used my store points for items I bought earlier. Is actually cheaper than this.

Price adjustments are going to be made, and they did indicate that the second run may cost more.

I don't blame people who don't want to pay in advance. As people have different habits in how they spend. As long as PC does not come back to me and say "hey buddy we need to increase prices for all your items you ordered from us" as a common trend I am willing to pay up front for the low prices. Not forgetting the free shipping if you buy above $150.

I paid for 4 iron hides and share among friends and we end up paying $85 for one rather than paying $110 for one. Why not? And you get rewards points to lower your next purchase.

I can totally understand people wanting to buy now with the dollar as it is, and $150 sounds like a good price given the increase in MP costs these days.

Still for me personally being locked into a contract buying an item with an end product I haven't even seen is a bridge to far. the fact that he's in the white prototype stage suggest we wont be seeing the end result for some time. if Ironhide and Tracks are anything to go by, we wont be seeing Shockwave or Hotrod until 6 months after we see the colour version.

All we had was just a toon pic as far as I recalled. Same goes for bee.

This in fact is the first time I get to see an actual prototype from TT.

We are about to come to a point where why don't they have just toy release and ban pre orders. Because I know for a fact that nowadays if you don't pre order you have a hard time getting one on release date.

Personally I would have agree with you 100% that we should have review and then say yes, I want one. This has not happened in a very long time. If it did you are paying about 20% above what most people paid at pre orders.

Not disputing the colours for Shockwave aren't accurate, as the cartoon did have a lighter purple, its a good choice by Takara and it may look better or worse depending on the lighting. I just have a preference for deeper purple or even something similar to the G1 toy. Its something I didn't even think about right away. Most likely there will be another version planned I might just wait and see. Its worthwhile raising the point as others may not of noticed or cared.

Yeah, I would have preferred a dark purple colour like the toy had as well. I'm sure a Hasbro release will cater to it later next year.

From the latest Seibertron podcast, Ryan seemed sceptical that Hasbro would touch Shockwave given the concerns about toy guns from a legal perspective. So this may be the only way to get Shockwave. To me the colour looks nice and it wouldn't stop me from buying this in any case. Shockwave is shaping up as maybe the best ever Masterpiece figure to date.

Hasbro release? Probably not, as they seem to be struggling to get the US Retailer (ToysRUs) to commit to more than a couple each year.
Hasbro are doing 2 or 3 per year to TakaraTomy's 10-12 per year. And of the two Hasbro have released this year, one was a re-release, which means there are a lot of Japanese MPs that are probably never going to see a Hasbro release.

While what you said makes sense but there isn't anymore decepticon mp available other than Skywarp and Thundercracker their mp release would be just autobots.

I have no issues whether is darker or this colour. Just felt the decepticon logo could have been placed in the correct location.

The symbol on his chest only appears in one photo so it's likely a sticker. The symbols on his arms are probably stickers too, but could be tampo'd since they'd be on the underside if you have the hose on top.

If it's stickers then I think that solves everything. :) thought it look a bit weird but still fine for me.

Even though I still feel the colour is off (I understand that that the source material varies but he doesn't seem to match any of them) I think I'm going to pick this up, this line deserves the support.

After PC, Anime Export appears to be the best price but I've no idea about shipping, any posters here have any idea?

Wait for Nippon Yasan and thats a good place to estimate shipping just don't commit/confirm the order.

Nevermind,

3420 airmail registered, 4000jpy ems.

And if you when eco air it ends up around $160Au no tracking so First run PC was better off for this piece.

Hot Rod is better off with NY, I should have known better.

I'm assuming the box is vertical because they have Laserwave boxed in robot mod like all their other big Decepticon MP toys.
If true, they should have packed it in Gun Mode, so that the box is length ways... as there is way too many letters crammed in at the bottom. It's almost like Destron Laserwave is one word.

The Autobot cars are boxed in alt-mode, so I don't see why they needed to have Shockwave in robot mode.

All the bigger MPs are boxed in bot mode so it's consistent. The cars being in alt mode I assume has to do with them being licensed vehicles.

As unlikely as it is they could have boxed it in gun mode vertically. Maybe to save more shelf space or something, I'd imagin gun mode would be easier to pack for.

Also was hot rod one of those few unnamed MPs from the toy fair way back when or is that still unrevealed?

Like Orion said, Shockwave does't resemble any actual gun so he couldn't be considered a replica firearm.

Yeah, not likely. As Trent so kindly demonstrated for us, Shockwave (3P version pictured here) is closer to a replica hairdryer. :p

The dollar actually rallied today on the strong jobs figures. I agree with you that on a 12 month view the dollar is most likely going down as the US$ strengthens when the Fed finally pulls its finger out and raises rates. It's not as clear whether the A$ / Yen cross rate comes off much further though. It's more about the strength of the US$. I've been prepaying my Japanese pre orders whenever the A$/Yen hits around 89.

I am actually based on the news, is anybody's guess, for what it is, I am happy with the rates at this point. If it gets better well, I am okay with what I pay now so is all good.

But if the news is correct, then it may be worse off. I just paid all my NY stuff.

Ok but you can't believe much when it comes to the news and currency. Now that the dollar is falling they say it's going to 50c. Just like when it was rising they were saying it could go to $1.20. There's always someone trying to give an extreme view and the media will give them the publicity. I work in the industry so I know how the game is played. :)

Anyway that's good that you've prepaid your NY stuff.

this is about same size as MP01 and MP02 box which can package Shockwave in either Bot or Alt mode (i would prefer bot mode though)

Very cool pics I'm liking him a lot. What's cool is he has a very toon aesthetic. As I already have a quakewave this doesn't seem like an unnecessary purchase. I really like quakewave but he has the more IDW or even vintage toy look going for him. The MP release looks like it's been ripped out of one of the ultimate doom cartoon episodes. Which is cool also and I dig that!

I think it's been revised to the 31st of March, so we're still a week away. Still, you'd expect there'd be some in-hand shots by now, but then again, he's probably much harder to smuggle out than say, Hot Rod:

both amazon japan and takara tomy mall list it 31st of march. usually they release on saturday so i was expecting before it could be 26th

but with that coin reveal means everything is still right on track

it does look nice in robot mode but i don't find the space gun thing that interesting compared to the jets and cars. soundwave is pretty lonely at the moment but i don't know if i like him enough to grab one.

MP-29 is the correct height relative to MP-10 if one uses the Sunbow animation 'scale' chart.

Anyone know what material the arm hose is made of? I believe hose degradation due to the rubber material of G1 Shockwave is a common issue. I ended up applying some rubber conditioner/treatment to slow down the cracking.

It be really funny, because that's the whole issue with the cars and they choose not to use rubber.

Going by that pic it doesn't look like rubber, possibly densely packed synthetic like you get with electrical cables.

One minor gripe with MPs of late is the lack of rubber wheels for a premium product. If Lego can make rubber wheels which last decades then surely they can do the same with MPs.

I think is too late at this stage. They do give rubber wheels like MP-10 size mps

The only way it goes up, is to make a new brand line. But I think we gone way too far now.

Lego is in a different level of quality. even Kreo cant compare to Lego mini figs which both sell at same price.

anyway takara tomy mall indicated no batteries included so just want to confirm and hopefully still same batt size with other MPs

Two sets of batteries are needed: two LR44 button cells for the left forearm, and two AAA batteries for the gun muzzle.

Not impressed with the separate 'hand' accessories ala Revoltech. I expect much more from a MP. In fact, looking at the new pics, he looks closer to a reissue G1 Shockwave (that we never had) instead of something that gives the impression of next-level engineering.

Having said all that, I'm still excited about getting him.

what's wrong with the hands? they've pretty much the same hands just different plastics/colour. Though I do wish mp's had articulate fingers.

I'm super excited about shockwave as he's anime accurate. Not much you can do with him as his transformation in the cartoon and toy were pretty simple.

unless we know one who actually works/worked at TT factory we will never know why some are single or double taped. i first noticed this thing from my DOTM Jetfire Optimus Asia Exclusive. i thought i was ripped off by the seller saying MISB but double taped. Then inspected carefully that it looks tampered in factory when i also went to one hobby store to check their stock which is same side double taped. so this may be QC issue / random check (but shouldnt they tape it when stacking it already in the shipping box?). since all came in one factory I think it gets distributed to Hasbro Asia and Takara Tomy Japan. But they will still claim this is unopened and new as usual.
