Some interesting images have been posted on imgur (http://imgur.com/a/8YY2Z) from the 1986 Movie, but I don't think we know who posted them there.
Since the background artwork was taken from a TFW member who posted them up over a year ago, the rest could also just be a collection of images that were obtained from various websites.

Either way, it is a nice collection of images in one place, mirrored at TFW (http://news.tfw2005.com/2015/11/08/transformers-the-movie-animation-cels-and-backgrounds-305084) in case the imgur gallery is taken down for using other people's images without permission.
Also scroll through the original source for the background images (http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/radicons-customs/979397-g1-toon-backgrounds.html), as he did quite a few of these composite images from the various Gen1 seasons and Movie, by taking screenshots from the cartoon from moving scenes or moving Bots, and removing the Bots from the foreground (if they were moving). He explains the process in post #83.

The Animation Cels included in the imgur gallery are also fascinating, as some show different layers of various scenes (as they are drawn in layers and then move independently, rather than redrawing the entire shot if only something in the foreground moves).

I've always thought the TF movie backgrounds were beautiful. Its a shame those images aren't bigger, as a few of them would make kick ass desktop backgrounds!

My favourite one is looking down on the Autobot City, which the guy on TFW said took him the longest to create, because it is from the start of the Movie with Hotrod looking down as he was driving, and bits of cliff and rock would keep going past.

They are stunning. 2D animation truly is a lost art.

Saw these a few days ago, they're great! I love those backgrounds, gosh. You don't get a chance to appreciate them as much when there's animation going on on top of them.

Yeah, CGI is where it's at!

2D isn't lost at all though. There's plenty of great 2D animation still happening today. Check out almost any graduate film from Gobelins school (https://www.youtube.com/user/gobelins), submissions to AIAFF (http://www.annecy.org/home) (which tend to represent trends in contemporary animation), and the animation work from Ankama (http://www.ankama.com/en), for a start. Just because some of it is digital, doesn't mean there isn't a huge amount of knowledge and technical skill involved. And the principles of animation remain the same.
A lot of 2D stuff still comes out of Japan as well, but the quality varies. :p
