View Full Version : Star Wars TFA: Digital or Blu-ray?

I'm wondering how many of you are considering if they should buy the digital version of TFA that is coming out in a couple of days on the 1st of April or wait till the Blu-ray (and DVD) comes out in a couple of weeks? If we got the physical copy a couple of days after the digital like the Yanks do I'd just buy the Blu-ray. But I so need to see it again.

Blu Ray here. I'll probably buy a box set one this trilogy is done too, I have next to no self control Star Wars-wise. I managed to avoid the recent steelbooks at least, apparently a 4th copy of the original trilogy is where I draw the line.
Until they release despecialised editions and/or release more deleted scenes.

Blu ray definitely as I have a 3D tv. I'm not sure if I'd buy all 9 all over again though. With the spinoffs as well, getting all films in a set would be a nightmare.

most likely blu ray for me, partly for the collector fan in me but also i imagine at the moment it's easier for me to watch the disc with my ps3 and also i can't accidentally delete it or anything :p

Hehehehe... I knew what that was going to be before I clicked on it.

I use that Simpsons line often when "youngens" talk about old things to them being outdated... and then have to explain to them what Beta is/was.

sort of off-topic but related...do any of you have the steelbook blu rays released late last year and/or the 'saga' blu ray box set? i'm just wondering about the differences in bonus features. from a review i read the 2011 and 2015 saga box sets have no difference and include a bonus disc but the steelbook ones are all individual and i don't know if they include everything or not, and if whatever they do include is also included in the saga box set.

Saga box set (either release) are the same, content wise. One disc per film, one bonus disc per trilogy, and a ninth disc of (more!) additional content.

The recent steelbooks are simply the movie discs, so the box set of all six is nine discs, and three more discs than the individual releases.

thanks! :) i guess i'm weighing up buying the 3 movies i want individually with less or no bonus stuff as opposed to a set of 6 with heaps of bonus stuff, but half of which i may not watch. even then i'm not sure if i should keep waiting and hoping they will release HD theatrical versions. one rumour suggested the film was permanently altered for special editions but people keep coming across unaltered film and can make the 'de-specialised' versions so who knows...

And Betamax?????

My Uncle used to have a video sore and I remember when beta got phased out. He was sad because he thought it was the would beat VHS.

I can't believe DVD's are still a thing!

Although I'm sure there a plenty of whippersnappers who will wonder why Blu-Ray's are still a thing.

Buy the whole saga. The extra content on the three discs is fantastic quality and the ninth disc has an SNL skit with Kevin Spacey playing Christopher Walken in his 70s audition for Han Solo. Worth the price of admission alone.

There's no announcement on the 3d version is there? Only the regular edition is coming out.

God I hate that. Blatant money grabbing from greedy studios. If the 3d version comes out months later, I'm going to wait. No way I'm buying it twice.

Paul Agnew: I see whatchoo did thar. ;)

If the Blu Ray isn't too much more expensive than the DVD then I might go for the Blu Ray. This is mostly because I want the special features.

Question: is the DVD/BR coming out next Monday or Wednesday? Cos I was in Target yesterday, and the sign said "3 days to go" (which would make it Monday), but then the posters said "April 13," which is of course Wednesday. I asked the staff and got conflicting answers -- two of them said that they were sure it's Monday, but another said that the embargo date is Wednesday.

I had DVDs set -1-6 and then blueray is out. By the time I buy 1-9 some other super hd media is out so I decided to sit it out till there is a dirt cheap sale.

Big W should have it for sale tomorrow. We received our copies on Friday, and the system has them restricted only until 9pm tonight. Obviously stores are closed at that time, but that means in the morning it will be good to go!

I had talked to the Disney rep a few times as well and she confirmed Monday as the release date. Apparently Lucasfilm was the one wanting to hold off until Wednesday, but Disney Australia pushed for Monday. At least according to the rep.

I expect at some point I'll get the BR. I don't really have a suitable storage system for digital content and don't do iTunes.

I won't care about 3D until I don't have to wear two pairs of glasses at once.

I'll be happy with a special feature laden Blu-Ray version.

Do you think they will do a 4K version? Kinda surprised they haven't mentioned it already, I thought they would be more on the cutting edge.

Can you play the digital versions on any device e.g. media player, PC, tablet etc. or is it non-transferable and locked to the specific device you download it onto?

The Digital Copy included with the BD is redeemed through either Google Play or iTunes, so you can use it on appropriate devices, including phones, tablets, PCs, etc. Probably not media players (except Apple TV and Chromecast, but both those will simply stream it rather than store it locally anyway).

Cool, thanks. So is the download just a normal .mp4 / .mkv / .avi container file that you can copy and transfer?

.mp4, but it has Digital Rights Management (DRM) so (speaking from iTunes experience here), you can play it on multiple computers/devices as long as they're authorised to the purchase/redemption account.

Is there an Australian Bluray/DVD combo pack available. Haven't come across it, assuming the Bluray/Download version replaces it?

Tempted to get the DVD since it is effectively $10 at Woolworths and let that tide me over until the eventual Trilogy collection Blurays.

There does appear to be a cover with the little droid on it
