Okay, so I figured there's probably a few of us on here to collect the Takara Asia exclusive coins and premiums but it's hard to find a comprehensive list of them.

So why not make one here? If there's interest, I'll add to it over time. If not, well, that's that. Any omissions, please feel free to comment.

Very good list.

There is a Jetwing Optimus Prime coin which came with The DOTM Jetwing Optimus Prime.
MP-08X King Grimlock never came with a coin, that coin belongs to the MP-08 reissue Grimlock.
Also I never knew there was a MP-01L coin.

Will add the uW5 coin to the list as well as the grimlock crown/flames.

How was the grimlock coin (not crown and flames, coin) distributed? TRU? With what version of the figure?

Doing further research the King Grimlock coin was available via TRU Singapore online as a standalone item.

http://www.toysrus.com.sg/transformers-grimlock-masterpiece-coin_1181150/

But the general consensus is that the coin was also given out freely with purchases of the Hasbro's MP-03 Grimlock during a limited time only in Asia.
The coin itself is pretty expensive fetching on average $60-$100 AUD on ebay.

yeah i did not bother that coin coz it i was thinking it is from the Hasbro MP03 Grimlock version (and i started collecting Takara only by that time) never thought it would be that rare. MP03 was sold at TRU here in Australia for 130aud but in the Philippines it was sold around 150aud with coin for a limited time.

So, is the King Grimlock coin a TRU promo for Hasbro MP-3 Grimlock (I believe I saw it before Hasbro's MP-3 Grimlock was released) or as a purchase for the MP-08X King Grimlock figure?

Does anyone know if the coins and their packaging were ever KO'd?

I ask because I was given a Soundwave coin with another Transformers purchase quite a while back and I can't figure out if the coin set was just some gimmicky KO or not.

I don't think so but if there's money to be made...

Likely not though. Soundwave's coin was in both silver and gold IIRC.

They were given out for free when you purchased Hasbro MP Grimlock from Toys R Us (Hong Kong). The back of the card has the distribution so I figure those are the countries the coins were sent to for 'free' distribution. The issue was you had to specifically ask for the coins and TRU kept a lot of them (no idea what they did with them). If you brought Grimlock and then went back to get your coin because you had forgotten they wouldn't give you one which might be why they aren't as common?

Hmm - nice to know it is legit. I always just assumed it was fake because I didn't buy a MP figure to be given it and it just sits stored in a box.

I didn't realise the coins were worth anything... sorry. Otherwise I'd have offered one of the Grimlock coins up. I guess living here I kind of take them for granted. Unless you are buying from a Japanese importer the coins are somewhat of a given in most HK retailers these days.

Haha, all good! It was one of those that I'd been eyeing for ages and finally bit the bullet on ($92.85). I saw one at a TRU in Singapore when I was travelling about 15 months ago but neglected to ask about it (there was no Grimlock MPs there at the time) and assumed I had it (I had almost every other MP coin at that point). Only later did I realise how difficult it can be to find!

As I get my MPs through Nexusnixx, they usually have the coin/premium included but this coin was distributed a bit differently and as such is a bit of an anomaly.

It's always funny when things that are apparently rare globally are easy to source on your local market. I remember TRU having a tonne of Star Wars Jodo Kast figures (a US Kmart exclusive).

millhouse
13th April 2016, 11:51 AM
As far as I can figure, having trawled through Transformers Asia's Facebook page, I've got everything listed.

Notable examples of no coin include MP-23 Exhaust (where the coin was produced but it's release cancelled after the initial release outside of Japan was cancelled due to legal issues with the figure's deco) and MP-11NR where no coin has been mentioned (being a TT Mall exclusive may play into that, although it hasn't in the past... - most TT Mall exclusives have had a coin upon their release in Asian - see UW Defensor, the most notable exclusion being MP-10 EVA).

Kazza, you definitely can have first dibs on my spare... BUT my question to everyone is can you legally post these coins to Oz from an International destination without AusPost confiscating them? Has anyone had a coin shipped to them from overseas?

When I look at their definitions they classify "coins" as a "valuable item" coming from an International destination and thus not permitted for delivery into Australia. Would the MP coins count even though they are a non-denmination non-precious metal collectable coin.
I know in NZ you can't post "collectables" as they confiscate them for some bizarre reason as well so you have to use different descriptions on the customs declarations.
Not so easy with an obviously shaped coin going through an x-ray scanner.

I just wouldn't want to ship one only to have customs stop it at the border. That would SUCK!

I can't imagine it having any issues as it is not currency, plus I've had a few shipped by themselves to Perth AU without any issue whatsoever.

Last one was marked as "Transformers coin" but you could use the word medallion instead.

I've had two MP coins shipped to me from Hong Kong before no problems, I think the wording was similar to millhouse's, something like transformers coin or toy collectible.
If I can find the envelope (this was a few years back but I might still have it somewhere lol) I'll let you know the exact details.

EDIT: Looking back at things I've had shipped from the states to me in Aus I also had a lot of random coins from ebay sent to me as well, some collectors coins but others actual old currency, the customs declaration was just "Bulk lot of assorted coins" and that also got to me without issues, so should be fine just putting "transformers toy coin"

I've sold my coins at $10 each (the rarer/exclusive ones at $15)

While I understand the super rare ones like Grimlock sell for more, I don't think that the regulation toys of the past couple years demand much more than that - $10 covers the "I have to spend a little bit of time going to the shop to buy a padded envelope to mail it to you"

Plus I don't think you're the type of guy who will try the "OMG SUPER RARE IRONHIDE COIN NOT KO MINT MP27 $50 LAST ONE!!!11!" routine :D

The one in the second link. The one in the first link was with a Takara release and isn't a coin but a die cast crown in a coin-shaped box with a silicon sleeve to add flames to Grimlock's sword. The second is an actual coin, released by Toys R Us in the Philippines and Singapore.

No MP-9B coin as faras I know.

I initially thought that you made a typo but then I remembered. ;)

Although omitting the 'h' is an understandable mistake for non-English speakers as it is a pretty useless letter (as all silent letters are). It's interesting from a linguistic historical POV as it's a remnant of the archaic pronunciation of these words (i.e. when these letters weren't silent), but no longer representative of how it's pronounced today. Then again, English would probably be unreadable if rendered phonetically. ;)

I nearly bought one a couple of times a few years back but, to be honest, it's a box and shipping would be ridiculous. I wouldn't use it. Hence I passed.

Is anyone else a little irritated that we seem to be moving away from coins to little figurines in a box for the Masterpiece figures?
They look nice enough, but they don't seem to be celebrating the character they come with and they are definitely going to be harder to store.

nope, but I understand your frustration if they suddenly do a "Hey Look, Inferno coin" I personally prefer coin if between the two.

I'd actually prefer something more akin to an accessory than a coin or figurine. The coins at the moment just go in a drawer and the figures, if I ever get any, will likely do the same.

Thanks for the list. A database or grid with pictures would be nice too.
I was also someone who overspent chasing a MP-8X coin.

Where's it from? What's the story?

I've got a Megatron coin from the Perth Mint but it doesn't exactly fit the brief of bonus Asia-distribution items.

While I realise that the three MPM recent figures haven't had a coin, I haven't heard anything about a set for them.

Post some details and I'll check into it.

Also you don't have on the list 3 things. the MP-9 Rodimus Convoy "Welcome to Transformers 2010" exclusive mail away sound stage. The matrix sound stage like the one that came with MP-1L Last Shot convoy. Not the same as the MP-9 Display case that is the card board box. Also the MP-9B e-Hobby exclusive comic book like the ones that came with MP-1B and MP-3G. Finally the 2013 Cybertron Con Grimlock exclusive Grimlock Apron. It came in the t-shirt pack that was bought with the Cybertron Con exclusive MP-8. Its a special accessory produced by a Taiwan fashion company and made to fit MP-8 grimlock.

You are correct!

I had the display case in there (listed as display stand), but have updated the listing to include the apron from Grimlock (which I own) but not the t shirt as it doesn't actually go with the figure as an accessory or coin.

I never had an intention to collect these (I used to get most of the MP toys from HLJ in Japan, so didn't get too many during their time of release), but a couple of bulk purchases from BBTS, and I'm now up to 42.
I don't want to collect them all... which would be very difficult, especially with Exhaust not seeing a legitimate release... but these are a novelty for the collection. It's just a shame that the coins don't come out without pulling apart the envelopes.
