Hey all,

I have started my own blog/website: http://www.bigangrytrev.com/

Most everything on there relates to five different catagories:
Ask Trev! - http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?cat=6

Hobby Farming -http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?cat=5

Meaty Goodness - http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?cat=2

Random Rants -http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?cat=7

Tales of the Trev -http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?cat=4

Transformatorium -http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?cat=3

After consultation with Griffin, he is letting me pop up a thread here to let people know about new stories and articles coming up on my website/blog. Hopefully after a while and my site has gained it's own momentum this wont be necessary and hopefully I will provide content interesting (or at least entertaining) enough that people will start subscribing and getting their updates that way. :)

Please note that the articles and reviews on my site that relate to Transformers will have their links placed in the Ratbats Reviews section here: http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=22786

Thanks to Griffin to letting me put up these threads (as well as putting links on my site to direct people back to Ozformers for more TF info) and thanks to all of you who have checked out my site so far - nearly half the redirects to my site seem to be coming from here and I appreciate it :D

Excerpt from blog post:

This question comes from Lucielle, all the way over in Gauteng in South Africa “What am I thinking?”

Well, my educated guess would be “Holy crap! I asked this question 4 months ago as a joke – he is actually answering this?!” And I bet I am not far off the mark

But the truthful answer is that I don’t know because I am not a mind reader.

http://i1028.photobucket.com/albums/y342/sare111/IMG_4388_zpsn2yzdsjs.jpg (http://s1028.photobucket.com/user/sare111/media/IMG_4388_zpsn2yzdsjs.jpg.html)

Do you know why I am not a mind-reader? Because mind-readers, psychics, soothsayers, precognitives, astrologists, fortune tellers, tarot card and palm readers and all of their ilk are FULL OF ******G ***T!

No-one can read your mind – NO ONE! This is NOT a debate people, they can’t do it! And anyone who says they can are either self-deluded or a con artist or most likely both!

As a red meat lover I need to bring this to everyone's attention!

Excerpt from blog:

For years I have believed, quite rightly, that Octopus were truly the most evil of all animals (for details on why I believed this the case please see my blog post HERE (http://www.bigangrytrev.com/?p=45)). However I have to be man enough to admit when I am wrong, when I have made a mistake. Because I have discovered an animal that is even MORE evil that Octopus, a creature that causes such pain and misery that it’s eradication is well overdue.

This evil creature is the Australian Paralysis Tick.

Excerpt: Ah the classic Scarecrow, truly a mainstay of peoples vegetable patches over the years. Scarer of birds and amuser of children. In the Wizard of Oz it was someone desperately in need of a Higher Education degree, in Worzel Gummidge’s case it was an inanimate pile of straw turned sentient being who was constantly trying to get his end away with a store manikin. The Scarecrow is a bit of fun that adds some colour to your vege patch but as most folks know it is generally highly ineffective at actually scaring birds. However today I am going to teach you Big Angry Trev’s secret to building a Scarecrow that actually works! And the good news is, it’s actually easier to make than the classic one!

Some movies make you laugh. Some movies move you to tears. Some movies dazzle you with fast paced action and brilliant special effects.

And sometimes you come across that movie that makes you walk out of the cinema with your brain slowly dribbling out of your ear saying “What the bloody hell did I just watch?!?”

If you like that kind of movie, then you will love Sausage Party.

Excerpt: I’ve had a love of German food since I visited the country many years ago. While the French might win on exquisite taste, the Germans win on cooking up succulent huge pieces of quadruped, wrapping it in cabbage or breadcrumbs and washing it down with a enough beer to sink a footy team. I had some brilliant feeds in Germany, so when I heard there was a food challenge to be had at the Hofbrauhaus German restaurant in Melbourne I simply couldn’t resist.

The challenge: To eat a 1.5kg pork schnitzel, a bowl of chips and a liter of German Bier in 45 minutes. If you do it, your meal is free and you get a t-shirt. If not, it costs you 75 big ones!

Excerpt: Last week I once again had the privilege of watching the aging alternative icon live. This is the third time in the last 10 years I have been able to see Henry Rollins do his spoken word show in person. Rollins was his usual self. For an 8pm start he hit the stage at 8.05 (and I think the only reason he waited 5 minutes was for the latecomers to be seated) and as soon as he picked up the mike the mouth started going and didn’t stop for 2 ½ hours (good value for a 2 hour show eh!) with big dollops of sweat dropping from his left elbow illuminated in the spotlights. As usual he started off talking about some of the local issues, in particular how despite his extensive vocabulary he had to look up the word ‘plebiscite’

Dear Farmer Trev,
Ok, so I got chooks.
19 week old pullets. They are all New Hampshire cross breeds. One Australorp cross (proving to be the noisiest), a white leggorn X and a Rhode Island Red X. The tiniest (white leghorn cross) has already come on the lay but one of the others (or potentially her) is smashing up her eggs before I get to them. How do I stop this behaviour?

Also – hen pecking – tiny has already started hen pecking the red. How do I address hen pecking if it gets really bad? Or is this the natural order of hens and there’s nothing I can do?

Finally – Is there anything they really, really should not be fed or any tips for super happy hens?
Thanks Big Farmer T.
-Mads.

For my entire life you have harassed me without provocation. As a teenager you bit me, after the bubbling hormones within my skinny, acne-laced frame. In my 20’s you swarmed me, no doubt to get drunk considering my blood-alcohol content was always simmering at a .049 In self-defense I’ve swatted you, I’ve slapped you, I’ve squashed you and yet you’ve persisted. But much like war in parts of the middle-east, where blood feuds are passed down culturally from one generation to the next creating a never ending cycle of violence, in my 30’s you have set your descendants upon the path of carrying on your jihad against me. But not only have you done the unconscionable of corrupting your own kids beliefs, you have now done the unforgivable, the unthinkable, the most evil thing I could think of…

Excerpt from Blog: I’m not a big fat fan as a rule. I always leave it on when cooking so it helps hold in all those lovely meat juices, but I tend to cut it off more often than not when it comes to eating the meat in question. But pork crackling is different – it should be its own food group! Was it not the great Winston Churchil that said ‘All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope, crackling’ (Historians tend to leave that last word out but many of them are vegetarians – too much time in damp book depositories and not enough exercise so I wouldn’t put it past’em to have cut it on purpose). And today I am going to share with you the simple yet effective way of getting yourself a good a tasty hunk of this salty pig elixir!

You say farting into a vacuum cleaner; I’m assuming by this you mean having the nozzle placed outside the sphincter ready to go upon flatulence excretion, rather than just sucking the smell out of the air post eruption. This must show that you are a young man as nearing 40 I don’t always have control of when I let one go, though I’ve found a beef vindaloo the night before will guarantee a plethora of gas the next morning.

To answer your question I tried the following experiments...

Excerpt from Blog: I grab my keys and go open the shed door, anxious to get the more onerous of the jobs over with before the temperature reaches the forecast 37 degree’s – atypical for the Mallee in January. Just inside the door is my big beer fridge and close to that is a black crate I’ve been using to sort my Transformer books and DVD’s (yes, as well as being a hobby farmer I’m also a big TF nerd). I notice immediately that there has been a big web spun between the crate and the fridge that wasn’t there the night before. There are a few bits of twig and dry grass in it. Also a great big Redback Spider is busy in the web, hungrily sucking on the tail of… a snake.

A snake.

A bloody snake!

What I should have been doing is taking photo’s of dead animals – that’s where the acclaim is! I’ve been contacted by internet, newspaper and television sources for the story, apparently deadly Aussie creatures killing each other is a newsworthy story all are eager to get their media mitts on. I’ve done 3 phone interviews in the last 2 days – it’s wiggy but kinda cool!

Since the picture I took of a Redback Spider feeding on a ‘Blind Snake’ went viral, there have been dozens of people arguing about species. Whilst everyone agrees it is a Redback spider and most people seem to agree with my assessment that it is a Blind Snake, lots of people have their own theories about what the Redback is actually feeding on, some arguing for different species of snake and some arguing that it is a completely different creature all together!

Excerpt from Blog: Multiverse theory states that if it is possible for a world to exist then somewhere it must exist. That there are many parallel universes to our own, consisting of worlds different than that on which we live.

Consider Cheeseworld – a world comprised entirely of cheese. What would we find there? Would the moon indeed be made of cheese? Would the Earth be made out of a Hard Dry Jack for the various cheese creatures to walk and graze upon. Imagine if you will herds of majestic Goat and Yak cheeses grazing under the Peppercon cheddar trees by a flowing river of Runny Blue.

Would people worship the great Gouda in the sky?

Excerpt from Blog: When it comes to cooking, various cultures seem to have the patents on different styles. The French have their light-on-the-stomach-yet-sinfully-rich cusine. The Germans are masters of wrapping up huge hunks of quadruped in cabbage and roasting the hell out of it. The Mexicans… well…. what you can usually say about Mexican food is that it’s fun to eat!

I like Mexican food, having an almost Deadpool’esque love of the food. I’ve never actually been to Mexico so I’ve always had to deal with other countries interpretations of their food. All the Mexican restaurants I tried in Melbourne were distinctly average. In fact the only really good Mexican restaurant I’ve been to was in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since that was over a decade ago I’ve been really hankering to have good Mexican again, so was eager to try the food at Cactus Jam in Warrnambool.

I went to the Louvre in Paris and saw the Mona Lisa. I went to the the Museo del Prado in Madrid and had my mind turned inside out by the works of Dali. Excerpt from Blog: Australia Day. A day to, in essence, celebrate Australia and being Australian. Seems pretty straight forward and for many years it has been. Get a day off work, have a BBQ and a beer. Catch up with a few mates – all very uncomplicated.

But now we have the internet.

Every year Australia Day seems to become more and more ‘obsessive, angry fragger on social media sh*tstorm day’. Don’t dare log on to Facebook or Twitter or anything else because this is what you will see:

The Far Left: “It’s Invasion Day! It shouldn’t be held on January 26th! It’s a racist day! We should all feel shame for something we have 3rd hand knowledge of!”

The Far Right: “If you don’t like Australia then f*ck off. If you don’t like our customs then f*ck off. If you don’t conform to our norms then f*ck off back to where you came from!”

Why don't you all just calm the hell down ok?

Excerpt from Blog: Goats. Sheep with brains. Reputations for being grumpy, smelly, eating tin cans and destroying any plants they get near. Why would anyone want a goat as a pet?

Because, if raised correctly, they are intelligent, loving, playful and can become wonderful members of your family, that’s why!

We have two female Boer Goats – Milly and Molly – twin sisters. And they are the nicest animals you could ever hope to meet! They follow us around like dogs, eat from our hand, give little kisses and licks and love to climb trees with the kids. In fact they are wonderful with the children as whenever we go for a walk they tend to pick a child each and shadow them, walking three or four feet behind, just like they are their hairy protectors.

Of course, goats can be a lot of work and you need to have the right space set up for them. So here are some excellent tips for keeping goats as pets:

Valentines Day. The cynical see it as a day invented by the greeting card companies. The sleazy see it as a day to prey on lonely, drunk, single people in bars. For those of us with partners it can often seem a bit of a chore, as if like Christmas we are supposed to drag our sorry butts out there yet again and rack our brains for something to give our significant other in order to fulfill this yearly obligation.

But nay, these are all the wrong ways to look at this day of romance. Yes it may be a bit cheesy, it may be a bit stereotypical, but Valentine’s Day really can be a day to enjoy and show the one you love that you actually do care!

Now, there are few that have met me that could deny I am a romantic soul. I have romance drippin out me various pores I do! When it comes to wooing the fairer sex there is me, Don Juan and Donald Trump. So here are Big Romantic Trev’s tips for romancin the arse off your beloved!

Excerpt from Blog: Spoons. Not just a catch cry for the superhero ‘The Tick’ but also a riverside restaurant to be found in sunny Swan Hill.

My wife and I have been eating at Spoons a few times a year since we moved to the area back in 2011. What I’ve always liked about the restaurant is the majority of what is on the menu are meals that you would never cook yourself or have little idea how to. I remember years ago when there eating slow-cooked pork belly on a bed of popped barley and warm grapes! While not the cheapest restaurant in town, you usually get value for money and rarely walk out of the place disappointed.

Excerpt from Blog: Mulch – wonderful stuff! Serves three main purposes around your garden:

-It keeps the moisture in the ground by preventing direct sunlight hitting the soil
-It helps to prevent weeds growing by covering bare earth
-It beautifies an area by putting down a layer of woodchips rather than looking at either the ground or weed matting

And of course you can pick mulch up most anywhere. If you have a tiny garden, then maybe it’s economically feasible to just grab a bag or two at Bunnings or your local garden center. But what if you have a big garden, or even like me a hobby farm? Suddenly a few bucks a bag doesn’t seem so cheap when you would need about 50 of them!

Well, good news! There is a place you can go where you can not only get as much mulch as you want for free, but you will be helping the environment by doing so. That place is your local tip.

On the one hand you need to balance the needs of your wife or girlfriend (never invite both to the same meal – it can only lead to disaster) has in regards to dietary requirements against your need to not eat a meal that tastes like a rabbit took a fart in a meadow. That might be fine and dandy if you live in an inner suburb in a major metropolis. Name a bad Melbourne-made Aussie cop show from the 90’s and chances are if you watch a few episodes carefully enough you will eventually spot me milling around in the background.

I did however appear in three movies. One was ‘made for TV’ (On the Beach) and two went to cinema. Excerpt from Blog: International Women’s Day. A day to celebrate women everywhere. There have been three main women in my life – my mother, my wife and my daughter (an honorable mention to my older sister but I will be using my love for her to discuss a different recipe). I cannot express enough the depth of my love for these wonderful women. So on International Women’s Day I do my best to honor the three of them. I do this by cooking, in memory of my mother, the dish she would always cook for me whenever I came home to visit as she knew I loved it so much! I’ve carried this on by cooking it for my wife and daughter. Though it is not the most ‘feminine’ meal, it always reminds me of my mum and it satiates my 2-year old’s craving for meat as well as my wife’s enjoyment of not having to cook after a long day at work. Excerpt From Blog:

Today I shed a tear for a man I had never met.

I woke up this morning to see on social media that Murray Ball had passed away. A minor celebrity that Gen Y or anyone outside New Zealand or Australia has probably never heard of. He was a Kiwi Cartoonist who had written a few books but was most famous for being the creator, artist and writer of Footrot Flats, a newspaper comic strip that ran for a few decades and inspired an animated movie.

So why did this whom I never met mean so much to me?

Growing up on a farm in Australia there was not a lot of media one could relate to. We only had two TV channels and I had no concept of Cable TV, let along the internet that would come along decades later. Everything on TV was from America or the UK, the exceptions seeming to be the news and soapies – neither of much interest to a young boy.

But there was Footrot Flats.

Now that sounds like it’s right up the alley of yours truly, and that it is! But you read the title – healthy and family friendly. What’s that you say – ‘You bloody sell out Trev!’? Well the problem of being part of a family is I never used to get to cook chimichangas as they were too unhealthy for my wife and too spicy for my kids. Excerpt from blog: The LEGO franchise was always big. Now with a string of video games and DVD’s as well as being tied in to almost every popular franchise – from Marvel to Star Wars to even Ghostbusters – it is friggin huge!

A few years ago we all marveled at the first LEGO Movie. It was funny, interesting and had a lot of heart. One of the main characters in that movie was Batman. He was arrogant, even if highly skilled enough to warrant it, egocentric and obsessed with metal music and the colour black. The character has subsequently appeared in numerous tie-in DVD’s and has remained fairly faithful to this rendition of one of the most iconic super heroes of all time.

Now we have upon us the second of the Lego movies to hit the big screen and Batman has the starring role. So let’s take a look at The LEGO Batman Movie.

Excerpt from Blog: As a young man, I thought it was a sign of strength of character to stick to your guns. That if you held an idea about something, you stuck to that idea and you didn’t let anyone mess with it. You fought them tooth and nail and showed them that you were right and they were wrong.

Only one danger to that – what if you are the one that is actually wrong?

This is a short story about how I held a strong perception about a certain group of people and it took one experience to show me that my opinion was total bollocks. And that group of people are hippies.

Excerpt from Blog: At the start of 2016, my in-laws suggested to me that I start a blog in order to provide me a creative outlet for the myriad of random thoughts that constantly run through this odd brain of mine, as well as it possibly being a new career. So one year ago in April of 2016 BigAngryTrev.com was born.

And here we are on the sites first anniversary. It’s been a lot of fun writing this and has proven quite educational. I’ve learned my audience is much more interested in Transformers than Hobby Farming, that spiders killing snakes makes for great news and that it’s often not what you write but where someone else shares it that determines the amount of views you get. Also that I must not that photogenic as the most popular video I put up is the only one I am not pictured in. Over the course of the Blogs first year I’ve had over 10,000 views – a respectable number indeed. However well short of the 100,000 a month I would need to start making money out of it. So share away guys! Send in ‘Ask Trev‘ questions, subscribe for new stories, encourage your friends to follow the blog on Facebook and Twitter and keep reading, I need a new career badly! I really appreciate those who have followed me along this journey and hope I can keep informing and entertaining you all in the future. If you have any suggestions of new stuff you would like to see on the site, please give me a shout out!

One of my favorite readers is Madds whom I have greatly enjoyed watching grow into a fully-fledged chicken-fancier. Once again we have an ‘Ask Trev’ question regarding chooks from her – this one regarding the molt:

Dear Farmer Trev,
Yep, me again seeking more chook advice please.
My girls are losing all their feathers!
At the start of winter!
They’re grumpy, sensitive and edgy, picking on each other, all off the lay.
The place is bedlam – feathers everywhere!
It has been suggested to me that they are having their first ‘molt’.
Is this a thing? Why are they so grumpy?
Why are hey molting in the cold weather?
What the hell do I do with all these feathers?
How long will it last? What can I do to help them?

Thanks Big Farmer Trev,
You noob chicken pal, Madsy.

Excerpt from Blog: Stress. Ironically in a country where it could be argued we’ve never had it so good, more and more people are suffering from it in Australia.

And I never thought I’d be among those ranks but I’m one of them.

Stress is a bastard of a thing. It stops you sleeping, it stops you eating properly, it makes you feel like there is a giant knot in your gut that won’t go away. It’s most certainly something that stops life being as fun as it could be.

But is the stress you are feeling valid?

Well I don’t know you but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say yes. Yes it is. Because you can’t control what stresses you – if you did you would most likely put a stop to it so you could stop being stressed. Stress isn’t like say a teenage-angst depression (rather than the full blown one) where people get, as the song goes, addicted to a certain kind of sadness. And since you can’t control what stresses you and that stress is particular to you then that stress is valid. But it can be hard to maintain perspective.

Excerpt from Blog: This is a stumper of a question but as you will see, I have come up with a brilliant, if somewhat unorthodox, solution.

Dear Trev, I am a gay male in my mid 30’s. I’ve been trying for years but can’t find a relationship. All the good guys my age are taken and all the younger ones only want sex. What do I do? I’m feeling lonely and desperate!

Well, I have the answer to your problem. An answer so brilliant I expect I’ll get a float in my honor in Sydney’s next gay pride parade! This is a solution that will work for most any member of the LGBT community (Well, maybe not the B’s) that finds themselves in the same boat.

If you are a gay guy looking for a relationship but genuinely can’t find one with another guy – marry a lesbian!

Now hang on, don’t tune out or start shouting angrily just yet! This isn’t as preposterous as it sounds. Let me explain.

Excerpt from Blog: Living on a farmlet in the middle of nowhere, one relies heavily on the internet to keep tabs on what is happening in the outside world. Only one problem with that, as you gaze into the outside world…

…it gazes right back.

Apparently I have become the focus of quite a few women in the area. Quite a few, ahem, very forward women. Women who seem to have some serious cravings that they think only I can take care of. It seems every time I log onto a Transformers site, a movie reviews board or read some comics online these messages magically appear, like these ladies somehow knew I was going to be checking out the latest TF5 news and were lurking on the site waiting for me to put in a showing.

Two blog posts that admittedly seem to be at odds with each other :o:p

Who doesn’t love a big roast eh? Well, vegetarians I guess, and people with eating disorders, those in a coma etc… well, lots of people. But lots more people love a roast, especially in winter!

So here is a simple recipe for Roast Lamb with Vegetables that is certain to fill your tum. All the ingredients will be seasoned in various themes of yummy goodness but I’ve even made that easy too. Just follow the below instructions below and eat hearty!

This question comes from Anonymous in Aberdeen:

‘Hey Big Angry Trev, I see all over the internet you showing off how you’ve been losing all this weight! Well how about ya share the secret how with the rest of us eh? Or is it all bullshit and you’ve had a bunch of airbrushed photos done like all the other celebrities – thought you were better than that man’

Well, this reads more of an accusation than a question but I guess what this person is asking is ‘How have I been losing weight?’ It’s true, I’ve been losing nearly a kilo a day recently. So how have I done it?

Excerpt from Blog: Here on our new farm I’ve decided we are going to be weed free and to that end I am installing no-dig gardens. The whole idea of a no-dig garden is exactly how it sounds – no digging! No digging plots in the soil to plant in and no digging endless weeds out over the years.

Though time consuming, no-dig gardens are simple to create and they save a lot more time in the long run as well as providing a nutrient rich patch ready for planting. I have outlined the step-by-step process I went through below.

Rump & Ribs in Rylstone is a review of the food available at The Globe – a restaurant on the main street. It is NOT to make fun of that couple that just moved in on Piper street. You know the ones, the Spratts? Where the woman has a bulbous arse and the bloke is painfully thin? This is not about them. And shame on you for assuming it was and body shaming them, not cool! Comments along the lines that he looks like the lovechild of a skeleton and a xylophone and she looks like someone shoved an air compressor nozzle up her datehole and set it to ‘mega inflate’ are juvenile, unkind and all such commentary will be deleted from this blog.

I’m not going to try to convince you to vote for gay marriage – I know you are not going to – there is no point me yelling at you. My message is why you shouldn’t be afraid of gay marriage. Excerpt from Blog: There are certain laws of the universe that one considers immutable – one of the main ones I have always had no reason to doubt is cause and effect. If you do A, then it will cause B to happen. If you throw a ball in the air, it will come down again. If you stick your hand in the fire, it will be burned.

So if you have a room in which you use nothing but cleaning products, then ergo that room should be nothing but clean!

No, not the recurring dream I’ve had for the last 15 years, where I am in a toy store finding all these rare Transformers, but whenever I get to the checkout my basket is empty. Nor the dream where all the girls I went to High School with think I am now unbearably sexy, but my car breaks down on the way to the orgy. Excerpt from Blog: I love lamb but I’ve been cooking it for years with pretty much the same recipe. Whether roast or chop I’ve always coated it with a mixture of garlic, rosemary and oil. While this has been great on a roast, it has never been a stand-out flavoring for lamb done in the pan or on the grill.

As the Househusband I am always looking to change things up a bit in the kitchen, to keep the wage-earning wife happy, and tonight I was tackling lamb cutlets. Through a bit of ingenuity and a couple of helpful suggestions I found a recipe that is unbelievably good! When I mixed up the marinade and applied it to the cutlets, the smell was that good I was tempted to eat them raw! Thankfully I restrained myself and thus am still alive to share this recipe with you.

Excerpt from Blog: Fear – a permanent part of every parent’s life.

Of course, that main fear, that overriding fear, that fear that can knot your stomach like a cats-cradle is that something will happen to your kids. You enrol them in swimming lessons because you fear them drowning, you hold their hand when crossing the road because you fear them being hit by a car, you give them a big kiss and cuddle, not long after having to tell them off doing something naughty, because you fear that they will feel you don’t love them.

Excerpt from Blog: This ‘Ask Trev’ question comes from Shannon in Pendle Hill:

‘What activities are there for someone housebound with a fractured ankle?’

The answer most guys will give you is ‘That’s easy – play video games and masturbate!’ but I’m assuming that after several weeks at home already those two activities have been well and truly exhausted, so i’m going a different tact and that is house exploration. The majority of houses are set up in such a way that everything you use the most is stored at chest height, making for easy access. Things you never use are stored in the back of the tops of wardrobes and things you use only occasionally are stored on the bottom shelves so that you don’t have to bend down too often. It is that level you are working at now Shannon, so time to get creative with what is in reach!

Excerpt from Blog: This question comes from Jordan in Lithgow:

‘Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized horses?’

One would assume it would be the 100 duck-sized horses that would pose the most danger. Horses have been known to kill humans plenty of times in the past. A horses kick can take your head right off and a horses bite can remove the flesh from your arm down to the bone! Fight a hundred of those little buggers and you could be in big trouble! They en’masse kick your shins to splinters and when you fall to the ground they bite and trample and use their tiny hooves to cave your skull in. A hundred tiny horses could really f*ck you up!

But if you have ever owned ducks, you know this question is not so cut and dried...

A question from a fellow Ozformer :)

Excerpt from Blog: How do you avoid spoilers for major movies/comics/stories etc in the age of the internet? What is an appropriate time delay before spoilers are OK in a public forum? What should be done (if anything) to those who spoil things for others?

Ah spoilers, people do tend to forget that the major word within that is ‘spoil’ don’t they eh! That by giving away the plot and/or ending they are spoiling that potential experience for someone else.

So how to avoid spoilers in the age of the internet?

Excerpt from Blog: Having a 5 and 3 year old at home, dinner times could be very stressful in our household. You spend an hour in the kitchen preparing a meal that is both nutritious and tastes great, only for one of your kids to sit there with a look of pure revulsion on their face and go ‘Yuck! I hate this!’ before they have even tasted it! Meanwhile your other child has stripped off to just their underwear and is running laps around the table trying to catch the cat! It can drive you barmy!

We got tired of nagging our kids about some of their behaviours, and realised that everything we were doing was negative and reactive. So we decided to change tack and go proactive and my word it has made a world of difference!

The cartoon show had a very polarizing effect on fans of this particular team from the DC universe. Some fans love the off-kilter zaniness, constant 80’s references and dashes of potty humour. Other fans hated what they called a bastardization of a classic team, the childish antics and the low quality animation. Excerpt from blog:

Dear Big Trev,

No vets in Melbourne know anything about hens. Except for one who is two hours away and deals with prize winning pedigrees and expects you will want to spend lots of money doing anything you can to save a crook chook.
The online forums offer some basic advice but it’s so difficult to know what’s wrong with a sad hen.
There seems to be a fairly common theme of ‘cull her’ amongst the more rural hen keepers.
I don’t want to spend a mint taking a vet to the other side of the city for the best bird care in Melbourne but I’m not a ‘better just let her slowly die while I stand about not caring’ kind of chook owner.

So my question is : how do I find the happy medium between livestock and pets when it comes to my backyard hens?

Thanks, Maddy.

That’s what most people think of when you mention a Tremors movie. What most people don’t know is that it isn’t just the one movie – there have been 4 sequels, a prequel and even a season-long TV series!

Tremors is actually one of the few Sci-Fi series that never seems to contradict itself. But they grumble at me like old men who’ve been woken from a nap in their favourite chair and the greyish one even pecks me when I put treats in their little run.

Excerpt from Blog: Dear Big Farmer Trev.

Firstly I would like to acknowledge and thank you for being instrumental in this city kids foray into pseudo ‘country life’. Ok I’m over stating things, into suburban hen keeping.

The little silkies did prove a complex hen to care for and I subsequently found myself down from two to one.
The bird vet said ‘they are very poor egg layers, you can’t get them wet, they’re very broody , have a myriad of health problems…’ whereby I asked him if that was his professional way of saying ‘why the fuck would anyone ever want to keep silkies?’ He laughed. A lot. Which I took for a ‘yes, yes that is what I was getting at’
In any case one of the adorable little munchkins made it but was desperate for companionship and I have managed to assimilate a new hen into my flock.

All is mostly going swimmingly.

The newest girl is a Welsummer.

She’s not just the prettiest bird I have ever brought home, she is the smartest.

She was first put in with the Silkie who was thrilled to have a new roost pal. Problem being Silkies roost low and are very poor flyers and jumpers and . . . all that other stuff the bird vet said about silkies and more.

Anyway I built a new coop, and trained the little silkie how to navigate my complex hen ladder system to get into the higher coop.

She’s done well the adorable little munchkin.

So anyway..here comes my question.

The Welsummer (Penny) is still not happy at all with the coop.

Every evening right on dusk the other two happily put themselves to bed and Penny paces about looking for (even) higher digs.

As a keeper of many birds I am hoping you can help me to understand where does she actually want to sleep?!

In a tree?

Over the neighbours fence?

Is there a coop I could get built for her that would be appropriate for her discerning specifications or is she just being a dick?

I’d love to let her freerange at dusk to see where she actually wanted to sleep but I fear she may end up over the fence.

Someone suggested clipping her wings first.

I’ve never done that to any of my hens. I am remiss to fuck with their abilities like that in case it disables them in a possible escape from a predator scenario.

Historically I have just taught them that shit is so good here they don’t need to fuck off. It’s worked so far, but Pen really really wants a higher night time roost.

Or that’s what I assume she wants when she paces about considering her options and winds up on my shoulder or on the roof of her coop.
I’d rather figure out how to accomodate her needs than fuck with her body.
Do different breeds have different innate desires or is this a quirk of Penny herself?
Have you had hens that protested their accomodation and how did you address it if they did.?
Yours in good faith,

Excerpt from Blog: For the most part I love having them around. First and foremost as they eat baby snakes. Even full grown snakes don’t like to hang around them. Ergo the more Monitors we have, the less snakes. And as a father of two young children that suits me just fine.

Monitor’s are egg enthusiasts. I’ve often found them in our compost after the egg shells and even in our own yard I’ve taken film of them scaling trees to first go after Cockatoo eggs and then Magpie eggs. Considering the amount of both we have around our place, that doesn’t bother me too much and I don’t get involved since its part of nature’s cycle.

However at least a half-dozen times over the past two years I’ve found them within a structure on our farm and have had to safely relocate them elsewhere.

Excerpt from Blog: Here in NSW we are facing an unprecedented level of Bushfire danger. A Total Fire Ban has been instituted for the entire state, a State of Emergency has been declared and some parts of the state have a danger rating of ‘catastrophic’ – a rating that has never needed to be used before!
There are plenty of official sites that can guide you through how to come up with your own emergency plans, and I heartily encourage every reader to visit the sites relevant to their state as well as download the relevant apps. What I’m going to share here is some of the evacuation precautions I and my family have taken, in the hopes it may provide you with some ideas of your own. In particular – our emergency bags.

All the best Trev. Stay safe mate and as always, if you need a place to house your collection I am happy to offer mine :D

I'll bear that in mind ;)

Excerpt from Blog: As of writing this the western edge of the Kerry Ridge Fire is about 5km from our farm. Due to this being the worst bushfires in Australia's history, our heroes in Rural Fire Service are severely overstretched. As such, the RFS is extremely busy trying to fight the fire fronts and saving homes, they don't have time to attend every single spotfire that is caused by an ember attack.

So as we can do our small part and try to protect our farm from Spotfire/Ember attack, we converted my 22 year old bush-basher paddock-bomb Ford Courier Ute into a Spotfire Fighting Vehicle.

Excerpt from Blog: Despite, thankfully, not losing our home like so many other poor souls, our family was affected by the unprecedented bushfires this summer. We had to evacuate our home for an extended period – twice, with the flames getting to within 500m off our back fence and 200m off our side fence. These were scary times for us, like many others across the state. If it wasn’t for the RFS fighting the fires tooth and nail for months on end, I have zero doubt our property would have been consumed and they have our families eternal thanks.

So the RFS saved our home, but what saved our sanity? Easy to answer – community, friends and family. Without these people my wife and I would have descended into madness long ago, and ours is a tale of how people pulling together made what was a terrible experience so much less worse than it could have been.

People are buying hundreds of rolls at a time to stockpile and shelves empty as fast as they can be restocked. So right now it’s a good time to own shares in a loo-paper company.

In fact one might say it’s a very good time to own shares. Almost a suspiciously good time.

That’s right – COVID-19 is not a natural virus! It is a synthetic virus. And who created this virus? THE TOILET PAPER INDUSTRY!
