Aw man... the Beast Machines Maximals... the fact that Hasbro needs to label the beast modes on the package to tell you what the hell they're meant to be speaks volumes. (-_-)
Beast Machines Silverbolt... that condor mode is epic fail.

Botanica is a failure for me because her alt mode was so wtf that there was not even a toy for her character ( I know Arcee and other characters also had no toy created, but I think Botanica's was purely for wtf reasons).
A few of the late G1 figures with "futuristic ____" as their alt mode annoyed me too.

I think that Soundwave's cartoon Cybertronian mode is quite appropriate ( but I need to do a TF Mosaic or something to explain :) )
I nominate Grandslam and Raindance.
They turn from cassettes into a tank and a jet. So how do they open doors, or use computers, or scratch themselves? How impratical is it to not have a head at all? Their only way around this is to combine into their gestalt form which means they are totally dependent on each other to fit in to normal TF society.

I agree. Soundwave's cybertronian alt mode may look lame but is highly practical at intercepting transmissions and overall intelligence gathering.
I think we have a new contender for lame alt modes with the Animated Jetstorm/Jetfire twins. Their alt modes look horrendous and their cobined form is not even a combination at all, just a pair of 'somethings' stuck at the bottom.

In defence of Botanica, there's nothing inherently wrong with her alt mode. As she explained, she and her crew landed on a planet full of sentient plants and they scanned them as their alt modes, just as G1 Transformers scanned vehicles and Beast Wars Transformers scanned animals. Yes, it is a weird and extremely unorthodox concept, but I think it's rather neat in terms of demonstrating the extent of the Transformers' ability to blend and adapt to their environment. The sentient tree mode looks odd and out of place on Cybertron where she sticks out like a sore thumb - but to be fair, so do all the Maximals in Beast Machines! It's not as if any of their beast modes are really disguises... if anything, they serve to make them easier targets for Vehicons!
soundwaves lampost mode? that was just hilarious
But it works as a disguise. And it's not as if being a walkman is that much better. d: What about Blaster's Cybertronian alt mode? He was a computer console panel! :D

Much as I like Animated, it's offering up strong contenders for absurd alt modes in the forms of Jetfire/Jetstorm and Cybertron Megatron.
Several Pretenders also count. Finback, for example allegedly transforms into a submarine. The pictures I've seen of his alt mode make him look NOTHING like one.
But I feel that the award for the most absurd alt modes goes not to anyone from the Transformers franchise, but from that other transforming robot series, the Machine Men. Two words: Rock Lords. Sure, Transformers had the Japan-only Eggbots, but the egg mode was more of a primary mode like Soundwave's cassette minions. I have yet to figure out the purpose of having a ROCK for an alternate mode. Disguise could be one, but then it wouldn't work outside of rocky environments.

What's weirder than Soundwave as a streetlight or Blaster as a console is actually Laserbeak as a cassette on Cybertron. His robot mode is different - not a robotic condor, but his alt mode is still a magnetic cassette tape! Buh?! And it's not as if G1 cartoon writers were too short sighted to envision futuristic Cybertron as still using analogue data storage... in "The Ultimate Doom" and "Desertion of the Dinobots" we see data digitally stored on laser discs on Cybertron. Phwoar!!
Paulbot mentioned the impracticality of Raindance and Grand Slam's robot modes before... but their microcassette modes are just as ridiculous considering that those are, like Laserbeak, their Cybertronian alt modes!!

true, but we know the animorphs toys are derived from the books/tv show, so we know what their toy alt modes are meant to be, they are just executed very poorly.. i think its a bit unfair to label the alt modes absurd when we know what they are meant to be, but the toy just doesn't faithfully represent it..
i mean, if we are talking toys, i can think of a few transformers toys that when you look underneath them, give away that they are transformers, or aren't quite right in their execution...

Using that defence you could say that no transformers have absurd alt modes. Plus we aren't talking about which modes are wrong we are talking about (as far I as can gather) alt modes that are just silly and IMO Botanica takes the cake in that department.

I totally agree. Also within the context of BW and BM her alt mode (and 'robot' mode) also does not make any freaking sense whatsoever.
Transformers which reformat themselves to suit the environment their in are still robots even if they are trying to mimic organic life. You see that in Beast Wars as their 'realistic' features were just on the outside.
Botanica seems to be Technorganic right off the bat unless the powers of the 'Oracle' reached offworld.
It was a stupid alt mode idea and the execution was every bit as bad. She is also a good example on what was wrong with the Beast Machines cartoon as a whole.

When it comes to Transformers, we can only refer to the Transformers Animorphs toys. And seriously... they're bad. Look at Rachel/Lion -- that is such a freakin' ridiculous toy! Her human face has that stupid lion face covering it that cannot be permanent retracted... her lower legs only ever look like lion hind legs... and most TF Animorph toys heavily rely on detachable kibble to complete the animal modes, kibble that's easily lost.
The only exception that I can think of is Tobias/Hawk who's actually a reasonably decent figure. The human mode looks reasonably human and transforms into a fair facsimile of a hawk! The other TF Animorphs all transform into freakin' were-beasts, not humans (e.g.: Casse/Wolf's human mode is a freakin' werewolf mode!!).
i mean, if we are talking toys, i can think of a few transformers toys that when you look underneath them, give away that they are transformers, or aren't quite right in their execution...
Yes, but TF Animorphs look bad from any angle. :p Tobias/Hawk is the only exception I can think of - he is like most other Transformers in that he looks convincing from most angles (of course there is always one angle that gives it away). But the rest of them are crap.
i was under the impression we were talking about alt modes in the transformers fiction, which as you said wouldn't include animorphs, for obvious reasons..
Autocon never specified fiction or toys or anything - he just said which TF has the most strange/absurd/bizarre alt mode, so anything TF-related counts! :)
The Beast Wars alarm clock squirrel with the big ballsack.
That is an absurd mode, yet simultaneously so full of awesomesauce!! :D
Using that defence you could say that no transformers have absurd alt modes.
Well I suppose we could look at alt modes that are absurd even in the context of what they're meant to be.
For example, Laserbeak, Raindance and Grand Slam's alt modes as cassette tapes is silly in the context of being Cybertronian alt modes with supposedly super-futuristic technology... yet still using magnetic analog data storage devices. Blargh. Paulbot was saying that Raindance and Grand Slam's individual robot modes are impractical because they're really just vehicle modes... which means that they essentially have two alt modes but not true robot mode (I suppose they're like G1 Mutant Beasts :p). They're very limited in what they can do unless they combine together!
But TBH Autocon hasn't specified any set definition of "absurd" so it's really open to everyone's own interpretation. :)
Botanica seems to be Technorganic right off the bat unless the powers of the 'Oracle' reached offworld.
It was a stupid alt mode idea and the execution was every bit as bad. She is also a good example on what was wrong with the Beast Machines cartoon as a whole.
Botanica's plant mode was organic before Primal reformatted her into her technorganic form.
http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/transformers/images/thumb/1/13/Botanica_OriginalPlantMode.jpg/180px-Botanica_OriginalPlantMode.jpg<--pre-technorganic http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/transformers/images/thumb/0/06/Botanica5.jpg/180px-Botanica5.jpg<--technorganic
Again, I don't see her tree mode as being any more or less absurd than other Beast Machines Maximals. She transforms into a technorganic tree that is capable of locomotion and -- HOLY POOP ON A STICK! -- I just realised which planet Botanica must've landed on where she and her crew acquired sentient tree modes!!

Heinlad's alt mode isn't absurd. It does need to be taken in context, however. He transforms into a Tanuki - a racoon-like animal endemic to Japan. They have huge testicles. Granted, they don't have built in alarm clocks, but the tanuki is pretty much as you'd except of a tanuki toy.
Sofaman's example of Refute is a much better example of a nothing alt mode. It's not a fortlift, it's not a clamp, it's what happens when the designer works while under the influence of illegal substances.

Firstly, if you choose to excuse the absurdity of the testicles due to anatomical correctness, you only exaggerate the claim of absurdity for the clock.
Secondly, I'm not sure anatomical correctness can excuse absurdity. Mammoth's can have three foot long penises. If Big Convoy had genitalia, I'd consider him absurd too.

*goes to Google* Okay, that's like 9.1m...
Anyway, it's not meant to just be a biologically correct tanuki. He has two variant tanuki modes, the one on all fours is more representative of a real tanuki - and in that stance the testicles aren't that visible. The other one is the tanuki from popular Japanese mythology - stands upright and carries a gourd of sake and a ledger (note: real tanuki don't carry ledgers or drink sake ;)). It's an extremely popular icon in Japanese culture that is very endearing to kids in Japan.
Real tanuki:

(Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko - from Studio Ghibli, creators of Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle & Princess Mononoke)
So in a Japanese cultural context, it makes sense. Just as we put boxing gloves on kangaroos - real kangaroos don't wear boxing gloves and in fact, while kangaroos do box, they don't actually punch. They use their arms to claw/scratch and typically stand on their tails and deliver double-kicks (as kangaroos are unable to swing their legs indepedently of each other, that's why they never walk, only hop/jump). If you ever look at a kangaroo's paws, especially on a male, you can see these razor-sharp claws that would make it impossible for them to form a fist but are extremely potent slashing weapons.
Star Upper's kangaroo mode is also based on the mythological boxing kangaroo.

The alarm clock thing is kinda strange, but it makes sense in context of his Time-Freeze ability. And it's also a pretty cool gimmick for that toy. :)

Holy thread necromancy, Batman! (my daughter hadn't even been born yet last time I posted here!)
*ahem* Yes, the Fuzors were a strange concept... like Transformers meet Wuzzles. I don't think a lionfish/hornet is necessarily any better or worse than most other Fuzor concepts (a hammerhead shark/eagle is just as bizzare) -- but the execution of the toy is certainly the worst.
I like the idea of a toaster as an alt mode! It really drives in that whole "robots in disguise" concept of Transformers alt modes -- I'd really love to see more everyday objects as alt modes, not just vehicles and animals all the time. That's why I wish they'd make a Dispensor action figure. But you look at toys like say G1 Soundwave, Blaster, the Cassettes and Reflector --- they all transformed into objects that you could find in your home. Heck, even Megatron and Browning (not most homes, but some homes with legal ownership of course ;)). That's also what I really liked about Real Gear Robots -- mobile phone, camera, portable game device, MP3 player etc. It really evokes that "they live among us" feeling for the Transformers. :D And conceptually I think even a lot of the "Label" series Transformers work that way too, particularly Music Label and Device Label (although the USB TFs are really horribly designed; and they're all overpriced IMHO). Sport Label and Capbots are weird, but still works along the same idea (I'd probably like them more if they weren't Optimus Primes/Megatrons and instead made them new unique characters; ditto the mouses as Grimlock/Trypticon). Device Label Blaster was a neat idea as a laptop -- I reckon Hasbro missed a good opportunity with that idea by not making Brains into a toy for DOTM. :( Conceptually speaking we saw how deadly Laserbeak was in DOTM by being able to transform into all sorts of household and office devices -- photocopier/printer, flat screen TV, pink Bumblebee (cos who doesn't have one of those lying around? :p) etc. It screwed around with rendering it as a toy though.
Even before then we had movie Frenzy who infiltrated Air Force One as a CD player and later was able to follow Mikaela by transforming into her mobile phone; which of course later gave him access inside Sector 7's base and allowed him to take action to freeing Megatron and for other Decepticons to rally at his position. I think it'd be seriously cool to have more Transformers that just transformed into every day objects that you could find in a home or office.

As for why he's displayed with the jets, although not being one, he and Cyclonus take the places of Skywarp and Thundercracker in the '86 box assortments. Thats Gari Gari Kun.
Rather existentially, he comes with a popsicle that he can hold as well.
LMAO!!! Classic:D
Also, I thought Scourge was a futuristic Hovercraft when I saw him back in the day, just thought that as he could "fly" (hover) they put him with the jets. :p Actually is he the first Shellformer?

I've always looked at G1 Scourge and thought, "Vampire Christopher Lee that transforms into a coffin."
