Looks like we're going to get a Platinum Edition version of Unicron, although there are no details yet on what (if any) changes there will be.

Robot Kingdom already have a listing (http://www.robotkingdom.com/platunicron.html) up, with a price tag of US$129.90 and a December release date.

Curious what this new one will be like. Not unexpected it pretty much the last remaining thing needed for the Platnium 30th Anniversary line.

I was thinking about getting rid of the 2010 version but now people will probably wait to see if the new one is better! :o

Seriously, are you agreeing with me or disagreeing? I've never owned one simply because in all the promotional imagery I've ever seen it looks like the front is round and the back is square. I've always figured that at some point in the future a better, rounder one would show up.

The only Unicron toys I have are the one from TF Prime, the Robot heroes one and the Titanium one.

Yeah, slice it however you want, its not a sphere. Its not a bad effort mind you, but the bottom section is blocky. When people talk of getting a round one they mean something more akin to primus or the vader/death star toy.

Unicron was always going to be a difficult toy to make because it's based on a cartoon model which largely ignores laws of reality and has much of its outside shell disappearing into thin air. So your options are either to:
* Have a round planetoid mode but with a rotund robot mode. The G1 Unicron toy (which never made it past the prototype phase) suffered from this. The Beast Wars Unicron toy was better but still not as great as the Armada one that we got in the end.
* Have a good looking robot mode but sacrifice the rotundness of the planetoid mode. This was the option that they went with Armada Unicron.
* Use MP level engineering and absorb a lot of the outer shell into the robot mode. We've seen TakaraTOMY achieve engineering marvels with toys like MP Ironhide/Ratchet. But to do this at Unicron's scale may make the toy hideously expensive. Armada Unicron is still basically a toy that was designed for kids to play with, much like say Henkei/Universe Deluxe Ironhide/Ratchet. Deluxe Ironhide/Ratchet was around the $30 range vs MP Ironhide/Ratchet who are about $130 at full RRP, so more than quadruple times the price of the Deluxe. Armada Unicron sold for $145, so an MP-level Unicron may cost around $600. No Transformer has ever cost that much... it would double the price of a G1 Fortress Maximus. Yeah... no.

MEEEGGGAAATTTRRROOONNN!!!

...so an MP-level Unicron may cost around $600...

Most of us are likely to spend that much (or more) just to get the three MP Coneheads, so compared to them, I think an MP Unicron at that price would be good value!

Gok I think you're trivialising the complexity of the Generations Ironhide/Ratchet Mould. Design, parts count wise, just because something is larger doesn't necessarily mean costs/prices will increase linearly.

Either way, I think perhaps a couple/few hundred Dollars for a round Unicron that hides/incorporates logically, most of the round surfaces of the planet mode into the robot mode would be a welcome addition to my collection.

Every time they re-release the Armada toy with new paint and mouldings to make it more G1 movie accurate I get closer to buying it though.

I agree partly with Goktimus about the extra engineering and complexity involved for a MP Style Unicron, but I can't see Takara devoting SO much resources to a product at that sort of price point. While I would personally buy it, you'd have a reduced volume of sales, and when Takara has gone BIG (Encore Metroplex, Fortress Maximus, etc) they've been shelf warmers.

If it were a choice between say a new Encore release of Overlord or Scorponok and a MP Unicron, I know which would sell more and be less of a financial risk.

Interesting.... I wonder if there is an anniversary set coming out with a Skywarp and Thundercracker toy as well, as all the other characters and artwork (in the last two images) are all being released as part of the Movie anniversary box sets.
If they did a Decepticon 5-pack (the two seekers and three Insecticons, with mid-reformatting paint decos) to go with the Autobot 5-pack, I would imagine them using the Generations Insecticons, as they just released the Gen1 Insecticons last year and they shelf-warmed badly.
(if it was the five recent Generations Legends versions, maybe it could also have the 2015 Leader Megatron as well... if it didn't look horribly out of scale to the other five)

It's the character that holds appeal. If you don't care that much for the character then understandably this toy's not gonna hold that much appeal for you, but for those of us who are fans of this character, then this toy was a dream come true. Only took 'em 17 years.

Really don't rate his alt mode from the pictures, did anyone else feel the same then have a change of mind once they had it in hand?
The alt mode is about as good as you can get considering that it's based on a very difficult cartoon model. In TFTM Unicron transforms from a spherical planetoid into a hulking humanoid robot. This is extremely difficult to translate into a toy, and I think that HasTak did about as good a job as you'd expect - and remember that the original Armada toy was primarily aimed at kids, so the toy still had to be fun and intuitive for children. Unicron looks fine in planet mode from the front, but it does have some bulky robot kibble at the back. They just couldn't wrap the entire thing in an egg shell without making Unicron be even more of a shellformer than he already is. The robot mode is pretty spot on, except for the two planet shells on his back, which are easily removable if they bug you that much.

There have been previous attempts at making Unicron toys in G (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/e/e4/G1toy-UnicronprotoHasbro.jpg)1 (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/5/56/G1toy-UnicronprotoTakara.jpg) and Beast Wars (http://tfwiki.net/mediawiki/images2/b/bd/BWNeo-Unicron.jpg). When I look at photos of those toys I can see that the Armada mould is by far the best of the lot. The Beast Wars version was actually aborted because it would have been far too expensive, which leads to another point - the toy also needs to be affordable. They might be able to do a better job if they applied a Masterpiece level of design and engineering into a Unicron toy, but the price tag would be prohibitively dear (especially considering that it'd have bugger all redeco potential to recoup the cost of R&D).

I'm happy enough with my original Armada Unicron though. :)

GoktimusPrime

Darth Vader/Death Star's robot mode isn't too bad considering that it's transformed from a grey ball to a black robot, and it's interesting how it has a cloth cape that tucks away in alt mode. But that toy is also a real female dog to transform and a mother of a shellformer. There's really not much fun to it as a Transformer toy. I personally find Unicron to be loads more fun to play with. Although Darth Vader/Death Star does offer a lot of play value as a ball. :p

That's just it though, I want a Unicron that looks good in both modes, because the character means so much. Unicron spends nearly the entire movie in Planet mode which kind of adds more import to the alt mode than a lot of transforms that spend most of their time as robots.

I've pre-ordered this one. I didn't get the last Amazon exclusive and even though I don't like the back square half of the alt mode I've decided I'd rather have this in my collection rather than just having the Titanium figure as my main representation of Unicron. I found I had 'not buyers' remorse after missing out on the last one.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that this is one of those 'last use of the mould before we reveal a new bigger better version' events. but on the off chance that it's not I am grabbing this guy at a reasonable price while I have the opportunity.

Yeah, but the problem is that Unicron is a G1 cartoon design that defies reality as a ball that transforms into a humanoid robot with virtually no alt mode kibble. A more rounded alt mode would make the robot mode a massive shellformer like Darth Vader/Death Star. That toy has a wonderfully accurate looking Death Star mode, but the trade off is a ridiculously complex, counter intuitive and generally not terribly fun transformation, and he carries the entire alt mode as kibble. Unicron tries to strike a better balance and I think that HasTak made the right call in doing so.

Okay, it has robot kibble protruding from the rear, but most Transformers have exposed robot parts from some angle (usually from underneath). It's uncommon to find a Transformer that is able to conceal all of its robot parts in alt mode and still be a good, solid robot. This is hard to achieve even at the Masterpiece level and budget. All of the MP jets have some robot parts visible underneath; MP5 has a great looking gun mode but robot mode was compromised, the new MP Megatron has a better looking robot mode but gun mode isn't as smooth. The Unicron mould was originally designed for Armada, so it had to be fun and affordable enough for kids.

He finally has a solid-coloured hand. Only took them 10+ years
Looks to be more translucent than transparent, but still not a solid coloured hand.

Is it wrong that I wish this was... bigger... :p
A to-scale Unicron toy would be about the size of Star Casino and probably cost about a million bucks. Good luck transforming it. ;)
