Hello Everyone,

I've had the itch to do a lot of Lego recently but find myself with difficulties finding parts for custom projects at a reasonable cost.

If Lego enthusiast with more knowledge than myself would be so kind to answer a few questions for me:

- Is there a cheap way to get 2nd hand or even 3P lego parts at a reasonable costs, specially for specific parts.

- Has anyone used the official 'Pick A Brick' lego shop service to order parts? How is shipping and how reliable is it? Cost, shipping time, sending correct parts.

- I am aware of Lego Creator which is a free software that I have not used yet. Does it tell you in list form all the parts used for a project? I would use this to work out what parts I need to order.

Cheers!

- I'd try bricklink for parts.
- Do you mean Lego digital designer? Someone on the eurobrick forum created an app that reads the .ldd file and generates a parts list. Heres the link: http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=41993

Lego's official "Pick a Brick" store? Why would you bother with that when Bricklink has everything you'll ever need. For Aussie stores, shipping can be as low as $3.

I've downloaded Lego Creator on my PC & I've tried planning my builds on that but I just find it easier to search google images for inspiration while simultaneously ordering what I need from a large Bricklink store (when making a big order, I try to stick to Aussie stores otherwise the shipping can get a little pricy).

Then again, I'm planning a MOC Classic Spaceship & I'm currently waiting on 3 orders from Germany containing mostly vintage parts... not cheap... Lol!

Bricklink is the way to go for specific parts. The only drawback is that most stores have a minimum order quantity (usually around 5-10 USD). It can be frustrating when a shop has that single part you want but nothing else so you end up buying a whole bunch of crap you didn't need to pad out your order.

I haven't used pick a brick but I hear its pretty pricey. Even the most benign part is over 10c per piece. Not an economical way to obtain parts at all especially when shipping starts at $25 (not even sure if thats US or AUD).

I've downloaded the software before a few years back. It's frustrating to use and I didn't find it useful at all (especially for people who are accustomed to using professional modelling software such as AutoCAD or Solidworks). Maybe the most recent version is a lot better?

As a final comment buying bulk lots off ebay or gumtree can be a good way to establish a decent stockpile of parts on the cheap. Some sellers even classify lots (eg. bricks of a certain colour, type like trees or tyres or a particular theme like castle or space) so you can somewhat target what type of parts you're after.

It's free shipping if you spend over $200 plus you get the freebie. So if you buy smart, it can work out cheaper than a lot of Bricklink purchases. Research is the key.

Non Star Wars related although I guess you could make it so but not directly.

I'll give a hint - I mainly need light grey and to a lesser degree, purple colors.

I'm looking forward to see the results once you engage on this project. Though with the amount of grey bricks you're going to need, a replicator would have been ideal :p

You have no idea how often I dream I had a replicator, specially when I need a special part of some kind.

BTW, not Star Trek either ;)

Is there a guide on grey brick color terminology? Apparently there are lots of different shades and for my project to work, I need to be consistent in color for each piece so need to be sure when ordering.

I am basically after a light shade of grey. I was going to settle with 'bluish grey' but perhaps light grey would be more optimal. I just need to see the differences

Curious to know if there are standard display stands everyone is buying for their Lego ships.

I came across laserlab on eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/laserlab/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=) and their customs look amazing. If you've bought from them before, can anyone provide feedback over their angled 75105 Millennium Falcon display stand (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Custom-acrylic-display-stand-for-Lego-75105-Millennium-Falcon-Angled-/142039846476?hash=item21123c0e4c:g:iL4AAOSwXeJXc2o b)? I am really struggling with Bricklink. The order parts count that I have is like 470 pieces yet the stores that have the supply have a lot averag so high that I can never reach it despite that amount. Others have horrible prices - One went as high as $200 while most other places are around $70 for the lot. They seem to impose so many restrictions that I always get caught out while making my order and need to look for another seller and it's not exactly easy to fill in the cart.

Another problem I have is that I can't piecemeal it across vendors because they have ridiculously high minimum order costs but only have a few items I need.

Ordering the pieces has been a lot harder than working out the pieces needed of my build. I am very close to giving up on this project due to how hard it is to order parts.

Kup, Have you tried using the part search? I sometimes use this page (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogTree.asp?itemType=P) as a starting point & say I need a large amount of a certain brick, I'll find a store that's stocking enough of what I need & go from there. Sometimes you won't find one particular store that has absolutely everything you need so in that case I'd buy the parts I need from 2 stores or more.

For example, Here's all the stores that currently stock light-bluish gray 2x4 bricks. (http://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3001#T=S&C=86&O={"color":"86"}) It may take a while to search what else these stores have in stock but it might be worth a look.

What's the autofindee? i just search for parts across stores.

If you create a parts wants list, Bricklink has an search algorithm that recommends a mix of stores that will best get you want. However this won't take into consideration postage and handling or minimum order quantities as those are not a measurable parameters in the Bricklink database. This is why I presumed you were not satisfied with your bricklink experience.

The_Black_Sheep's point is a good one and may help you get started. Though at the end of the day if your have a fixed design it doesn't change the fact that the bricks you need are the bricks you need though it might make you consider substitution of some of the less readily available parts in your design.

kup
31st October 2016, 12:55 PM
By limiting the search parameters to Australian stores only, I was able to put together the order. It was still a bit of work but that's understandable as this is a 'from scratch' somewhat large build.

There was a couple of odd things that I could only find in International stores so I also added a UK order. However most were from AU. I found Bricklink a bit overwhelming at first, specially with so many international stores that limit what you can order (one only limited you to multiples of 40 per part type) but now it's all done and I am a little wiser with using Bricklink.

Thanks for your help guys. I am awaiting invoices from the stores so hopefully everything will be alright and I can get on with the build :)

Are there any good guides out there for designing/Bricklinking your first custom?

I am considering building a custom TIE Fighter heavily based off the TFA mode - I'm thinking base frame + wing joint to keep things simple for myself, with colours heavily swapped out for shades of red. Looking for tips around:
* Going from ideation to LDD
* LDD to Bricklinking
* How to choose from Bricklink sellers etc. Maybe general weights/cost tables or calculator for different countries & perhaps delivery times (to save time researching into each country's national post website).
* Maybe a rule of the thumb number of spares as a % so the design is not royally screwed by a few missing critical pieces (I don't have disassembled sets to salvage from, so this project is do or die).
* Anything else a noob should be aware of?:)

Thanks in advance guys.

I am putting the final touches on my own custom. It has taken me ages to do as it ended up much more complex that I first thought. I had to take it as a learning step bit by bit as I never found suitable guides. It was basically an evolution. As I went on building it, I kept revising the build based on functionality and vision of what I wanted to accomplish. There were a lot of compromises along the way too. Also structural integrity was a big concern, specially around moving or pressure parts.

Unless there is already something pre-existing that matches your custom build closely, you just need to get a basic design plan, order a few bricks and then begin with the foundation. As you build it, you will know what other parts you will require.

Thanks for your feedback, kup. Glad to hear that project you mentioned earlier is drawing to a close!

Time is against me on this project, as I want it for a specific purpose. Though if I don't make it I do have a plan B and C. The general idea was to swap out colours from 75101, however it has evolved to changing the wings and potentially adding a payload section. I figured if my other adjustments are symmetrical then it should retain structural integrity (much higher than pre-2013 sets).

I downloaded LDD last night and had a play with it. Seems easy enough however there's no way to test for structural integrity. I'm trying to limit multi-angled joints so in theory (going to eat these words) I should be able to save myself multiple orders and seriously save on time/reordering.

Just want to achieve the minimum viable product here. Not adding moving parts, additional play features, or too many others parts that offsets the centre of gravity. Got ideas on extra features, but I might only consider those after the first build is done. Plenty of silly add-ons and mods ideas out there to play with later on: http://i.imgur.com/qG4lpz3.jpg

kup
18th October 2017, 09:51 AM
I tried LDD for a bit and noticed that it was difficult to creatively envision solutions. As you mentioned, it also doesn't really give you much in regards to structural integrity which a lack of can break a build and may even cause you to have to redo the whole design to reinforce it. I advise to only use LDD to get some concept happening but do not use it as your eventual blueprint.

SuspectimusPrime
20th October 2017, 10:21 AM
I played around with it for about an hour in the past couple of nights, and it's definitely much harder to visually put things together. I found ready-made LDD files for 75101, and quickly swapped out the colours to what I wanted. Changing the wings to a different shape with no moving parts is turning out to be more of a challenge, however it should be a bit easier once I get a handle on all the shortcuts (mainly 3D rotating) and common features.

One mistake I regretted quickly was playing with swapping all the colours first (turned out mono-coloured), which made it visually more difficult to see the pieces. Going to redo that this weekend by segmenting it.

I am fairly happy with the cockpit and might consider ordering the pieces for that right away. Doubt I will be able to get all the pieces I need from a single seller. A finished product in 35 calendar days might be too ambitious at the moment with work and holiday plans as well.

Yep, they got me there. Pretty much the only reason I want that set is for Hux. I skipped out on Kylo Ren's Shuttle & the First Order Transporter when they were cheap, and now eBay prices are absolutely repugnant.

This second wave of TLJ sets have been very underwhelming. Sometimes sets are available on the Lego site before retail shops here like the new modular garage. A few of the new speed champions are on the site but the mini cooper set says sold out. So maybe it was available and went too quickly or maybe it's a placeholder until March 🤷

Sometimes sets are available on the Lego site before retail shops here like the new modular garage. A few of the new speed champions are on the site but the mini cooper set says sold out. So maybe it was available and went too quickly or maybe it's a placeholder until March 🤷

Knowing McLaren fanbois I guarantee the Senna sold out. Minis are also a popular make of car among car fans. You don't see many on the road, but there is a rampant fanbase there.

I guess it's just a case of Lego has them before the retailers. I can wait a couple of months so I don't have to pay shipping and I get to use my Big W staff discount on them.

sometimes people sell custom sets with lego blocks or also sell or give away instructions online
not sure if these are "official" lego pieces or a mix but they have ww2 themed sets:

I have purchased like 8 Benny space friends sets to army build classic spacemen. I grew up with these in my childhood. I’m hoping to be able to use them in the upcoming LEGO city space theme. It would be really exciting if LEGO released a surprise classic spaceman set to coincide with this. I want more space minifigures in different colours , green, black, red, orange, grey, brown, purple!

Due to family commitments we are going Saturday instead of Sunday. Can’t wait to see all the massive mark ups on the new avengers and Star Wars sets, Penrith will surely be raised tonight/tomorrow as they all set up!

It’s a fantastic show and supports a worthy cause. If you’re not too far away and have two hours spare I recommend dropping in either day. It’s not as grand as it was at town hall but it’s definitely the biggest show in the state and has some marvellously clever builders.

It’s fairly common for Lego sets to have a few small extra pieces right?

I have just built the TIE Fighter (which was the first new set I’ve had in 30 years!) and there’s a few little bits that I think are extras rather than bits I missed on assembly.

(The third missile at least is meant to be there)

Always a few extra small bits. Have a few freezer bags full of them.

Some sets have a ridiculous amount of extra pieces (not complaining). The bigger the set, the more extra pieces you will end up with.

My rule of thumb is that if it larger than a 1x1 stud/tile then I have a hunt to see if I missed it. I have on a few occasions been lucky enough to end up with larger extra pieces, including extra 6x8 plates, minifig torsos or 2x4 bricks!

Technically every minifigure is a redeco/remould :P

It is pretty rare for Lego to do a straight redeco. They usually do redo a vehicle in a new set has different, more updated, parts. Most commonly with the movie licenses, like Star Wars.
Don't get me wrong, it does happen, but I can only think of a few instances.
Like some of the old trains they released in multiple colours all in the same year. Or there was a soccer bus set

The white and black one they have available now, I'd consider if I could get decals for it.

If they did that big Technic Porsche in Jazz Colours I'd probably get that too.

not usually. this one however has video game licensing and the previous car was in a larger 2-car set with extras. so not just a one-for-one re-release.

Looking for some advice/experience in regards to selling Lego second hand

I've got two set I'd like to sell. One is very big and although it came in a very large box, the completed model won't fit in the box it came with.

Do second hand sellers want a complete model though? Or do they want to buy a model in pieces again? It's a very awkward model to transport around a house let along in a car.

Should I try to disassemble it into some large components? Or completely into sepearate numbered bags (close to the original order as I can)?

It should be complete but it was missing one or two very small pieces is that an outrage? Even if I flag it? If I photograph it well and point out where I think a piece or two might be missing would that help a seller?

I'm not looking for profit or wanting to get my money back, but I think I should be able to get some money for it given how much it sells for at retail.

Selling used Lego is an absolute pain in the butterflies. I sold a heap about a year ago with mixed results. I sold a COMPLETE Big Ben on Ebay. Dismantled it and bagged it all by colour. Buyer reckoned half of it was missing which was completely untrue. So I avoid Ebay now. People can be really fussy with even a tiny amount of missing pieces. I have sold built Modulars and a Super Star Destroyer on Facebook pretty cheaply as I just wanted them gone and I could not be bothered to dismantle them. Sole reason I don’t buy and build Lego anymore. But it all depends on what sets you are selling as some are in high demand and others can be worthless junk that you may as well just keep. Hard to tell if a buyer prefers it in pieces or built to be honest. But if the price is right.

It doesn’t really affect the price if it’s built or not. If you don’t want to pull the whole thing apart just break it into pieces small enough to fit in the box. What is important is the amount of dust on it, discolouration, whether the instructions are included and the condition of the instruction book, and the condition of the box.

If you there are any pieces missing you list them. Unless they’re rare pieces then it shouldn’t affect the price too much.

i_amtrunks
9th February 2021, 01:22 PM
Same as the others, partially dismantled would be fine or completely into ziplock bags (or similar) is enough, you do not have to disassemble into "as new" parts! If the box and instructions are in good condition then you may get more for it. I've never wanted to boxes when ordering used sets online, and it does save on shipping, but if it is a larger set, you may be reduced to pick up /meet up anyway.

Goodluck!

I bought this set and was beyond disappointed. Other than than the four good minifigures you get; the rest of the microfigures are beyond crap along with the build. Save your money and go for the regular release sets that are scaled right.

I?m a bit disappointed Lego used the Forestmen Hideout as a gift promo, I?m sure it happens with many other promos , people are flipping them on Ebay. If it was an exclusive set for sale rather than a promo gift, I could wrap my head around the decision. I guess people still have to buy stuff to get the gift.

ebay probably the way to go for only a few pieces. Otherwise you can look at bricklink or brickowl but its likely not worth it for the small selection you have.

Target also have sales, Amazon usually match any other retailers sales.
Kmart can be good for heavy discounts on older sets they need to get rid of before new stock arrives. With the new city/friends sets due out on June 1st, there may be good deals in Kmarts for the next few weeks (often a bit of a delay for Australian retailers).
