Seibertron is reporting that MP40 will be Targetmaster Hot Rodimus (https://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/takara-tomy-transformers-masterpiece-mp40-targetmaster-hot-rodimus-revealed/39159/)

Courtesy of site sponsor TFSource, we have news of the next figure in the Takara Tomy Transformers Masterpiece line - after MP-39 Sunstreaker, it looks like we'll have a third iteration of the younger leader of the Autobots: MP-40 Target Master Hot Rodimus!

Currently listed for a February release, and priced around 90 USD, we do not have any images for the toy. How it will differ from MP-28 is yet unknown, too, so stay tuned for more updates as they roll in!

Transformers Masterpiece - MP-40 Targetmaster Hot Rodimus is the latest preorder from Takara Tomy. Image is a placeholder, official images and more details to come!

Update from TFW2005 (and more pics on their site (http://news.tfw2005.com/2017/08/09/takaratomy-masterpiece-mp-40-targetmaster-hot-rodimus-official-images-346648)):

I want to think this is a mixup with LG45 - also Targetmaster Hot Rodimus...
But they did just create an MP Targetmaster gun for Artfire

I have to agree with Ralph, this feels like it should be a reissue or a plus/lettered number not a new individually numbered MP.
So what do we think it will be, a TT version of Hasbros version of MP Rodimus Prime w/Offshoot, a reissue of MP-9 Rodimus Convoy including Offshoot from the Hasbro release, a reissue of MP-28 Hot Rodimus w/Offshoot from the Hasbro Rodimus, or entirely new molds?
Personally I'm going to say it will be TT MP-9 with either Hasbro's Offshoot or a redeco/retool of Artfire's Nightstick.

Edit: Oops, I missed that it said Hot Rodimus and focused on the Rodimus part, guess it will be MP28 with a version of Offshoot then, damn I hope TT arent going to keep doing these reissues with a new hat, I dont need a second MP28 :/

I personally suspect it'll be a mp hotrodimus redeco using toy colors with a modernized target master over the OLD rodimus prime mold, the price all the websites are reporting are a hint of that.

I like the idea but leaves me miffed, we could of had a mp megatron redeco (silver/black), could have been dinobot, hell we still have shockwave to redeco into shackwave.

Guess I'm just salty I don't get to have a target master for mine :(

Oh well least you won't need reprolabels for that toy look now

I wouldn't mind another MP-28 with a Targetmaster if TT fixed the altmode ground clearance issue (slightly larger wheels?) and improved on the chest area. New accessories such as Daniel's hoverboard would be nice.

I was just about to buy MP-28 a couple of days ago so luckily I didn't.

I'm hoping that this figure will be completely different mold to MP28. Maybe it's going to be similar scale and engineering to FT-17 Hoodlum or the PotP Rodimus Prime

Sorry to burst your bubble but that will not be the case. TT need to get their use out of the mold made for Hot Rod so they'll reissue them with minor changes. If it was a new mold, it would be revealed in a much more surprising manner.

I broke my MP-28 while performing surgery out it because out of the box it was a floppy mess that couldn't hold a pose.

If this one isn't a floppy mess and is in toy colours I think I like the figure enough to give it another go.

What else could they do to differentiate?

different deco
different head
modification of the "engine" on the front in alt mode to accommodate the TM

DarkHyren
4th August 2017, 04:52 PM
TT should just do the same thing as they are doing with the Legends line of headmasters for any MP's that should/could have Targetmasters, include Targetmasters for previous releases with new characters.
I for one cant be paying for MP's twice, no matter how much I would like that new hat...

drifand

I am skeptical that this is just another mp-28 + target master.
It feels weird they would change the numbering to MP-40 just because of an added target master. I will not be ordering anything at all till I see pictures.
I do feel disappointed that pieces like Trailbreaker or Hoist are still not out at this stage.

Its frustrating as we seem to be clinging on improvements over a same character than moving on to whats outstanding. For the record, I enjoyed MP-28 and my only complaint mainly was he was not rolling on the ground.

If this rumour is true, then chances are that they may have hit a snag with the production of Dinobot. Honestly, with how impressed I was with MP Nightstick, I'd happily fork out dough for a MP Firebolt with a MP Hot Rod Accessory (but them you are talking to someone who views MP-13 as Laserbeak and MP Soundwave as the accessory, so make of that what you will).

TFW2005 (http://news.tfw2005.com/2017/08/09/takaratomy-masterpiece-mp-40-targetmaster-hot-rodimus-official-images-346648) have put up photos found on a TF facebook group.

From what I can see in the photos the Firebolt figure looks incredibly close to the Offshoot figure Hasbro's version of the MP-9 mould (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Hot_Rod_(G1)/toys#HasbroMasterpiece) came with.

The only thing that stops me saying it looks like they are just using the Offshoot mould is possible scaling issues.

Anyone got Offshoot and MP28?

Nope, it's basically same toy with a new hat. They are doing the same dodgy MP Ratbat tactic as if you wanted the cassette, you had to buy a whole new Soundblaster repaint, only that this seems more blatant.

Maybe 3Ps will offer a targetmaster for existing MP Hotrod.

I really don't like this trend of Takara's at the moment to base decos off AKOM animation errors. LG Kup's colours are also based on AKOM's work.

I've preorder it at HLJ just in case I end up liking it, but I'll probably cancel it some time between now and release. Glad HLJ has no hassle cancellations.

What's the appeal in this release again?

Lord_Zed

For me MP28 while fun is one of the weaker releases in modern MP's so going to pass on this one. If they had done a comic accurate scheme like Grimlock all those years ago, then they might have got me. Don't really care about his Targetmaster, as Hot Rod spent all of 4 seconds as a Targetmaster in the fiction.

Still for those who missed out I'm sure this toy has merit.

Since when has Transformers ever not been Malibu Stacey with a new hat. Forgetting about the fact that any Targetmaster MP of the 86 Cars and Jets was always going to be that way, Transformers has always been that way.

After all, let's just look at the 1984/85/86 toyline in terms of retools, reapints and re-accessorising.

Autobot Cars:
Sunstreaker - Countach LP500S
Ironhide - Nissan Onebox Cherry Vanette
Ratchet - Nissan Onebox Cherry Vanette in an ambulance deco and with a new siren.
Trailbreaker - 4WD Hilux.
Bluestreak - Fairlady Z.
Hoist - Hilux in a green and orange colour scheme and with a new winch.
Inferno - Fuso fire engine.
Smokescreen - Fairlady Z in a racing car deco and with a new spoiler and bumper bar.
Prowl - Fairlady Z in a police car colour scheme and with a new siren.
Sideswipe - Countach LP500S in a new colour scheme and with a new boot and spoiler.
Optimus Prime - Freightliner COE
Red Alert - Countach LP500S in a fire dept colour scheme with the newer rear section and with a new spoiler.
Grapple - Fuso truck in construction colour sheme and with a new crane.
Ultra Magnus - Freightliner COE in a new colour scheme and with a new trailer.

The seekers are more of the same and the G2 combiners are such low hanging fruit in this regard that I'm not even going to bother mentioning them, yet still not as bad as the Euro G1 Constructicons or G2 Dinobots.

Then there's G2 Sideswipe, Jazz and Inferno, who are all literally "with a new hat" releases with minor colour scheme changes.

That ignores things like the Pretender Monsters vs Dino King which colour scheme aside, are literally releases "with a new coat".

And so the list goes on.....

Take character away for a minute and why is this "with a new hat" situation any worse than previous ones?

After all, the only thing a Masterpiece of a G1 "with a new hat" toy is guilty of is being a faithful rendition of the original.

Ralph Wiggum

Now that it is released, it looks to just be a straight (minor) redeco of the recent MP-28 Masterpiece Hot Rod toy, with the Targetmaster partner of the first Hasbro Masterpiece Hot Rod toy (Offshoot).
And since MP-28 Hot Rod had the engine mount sculpted, ready for the Targetmaster gun version, there is no remoulding on this toy.
In-hand photos can be seen here (http://news.tfw2005.com/2018/02/23/masterpiece-mp-40-targetmaster-hot-rod-hand-images-359994).

I seldom buy Masterpieces, but I may actually get this. I've been eyeing the newer Hot Rod MP for a while, and I prefer a Hot Rod/Rodimus with some purple (or maroon) on it. Makes me feel glad to have waited before buying the MP Hot Rod already out (NOT that there was anything wrong with that.. I just like this one better).

For japanese imports in general hobbylink japan (hlj), amiami, hobbysearch (comes up as 1999.co.jp in the url) and for more exclusive stuff in general (such as ttmall releases like the mp conehead seekers and certain unite warrior box sets like uw baldigus) nippon yassan (but tf releases are scarce despite bandai related exclusives sitting on pre-order for far far longer).

If ordering hasbro releases (ie asia exclusive outside of japan or american stuff) robot kingdom (hong kong based), big bad toys (bbts) which is american.

If you have one of them ebay codes I'd reccomend the stores toy_story_world and toysspark (last one I just recently used for the asia version of mpm barricade, was worried because ko's exist of him already but apart from the obvious removal of the tru sticker he was the real deal, helps knowing where the tampo on the back of the alt mode goes to know if ko or not).

Otherwise use your fav proxy service like from japan or something for more exclusive releases, happy safe hunting
