View Full Version : One serious WoW player!

Saw this today, and knew there were some gamers here who might be interested (or already know about it).
Some guy has set up 11 computers to generate and control a squad of up to 36 characters in the online World of Warcraft game.
That's some serious time wastage and a lot of money spent on hardware that probably wouldn't see much other use outside of gaming.
Wouldn't be surprised if he had a mini-bar fridge and bed-pan/bottle for the hours/days he probably spends gaming.
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/12/one-wow-player-controls-36-characters-simultaneously/
I'm not knocking someone having fun, but I think if you have that much time invested into something (hours spent gaming), you would want to have something to show for it that others can see. Otherwise, what has their life amounted to?

Yep I read about this a little while ago, there has to be better things to do with your time and money than have 36 WoW accounts.. like buy TFs haha..

The other day we had to do a group talk for a class and our group chose the topic "Gaming Addictions"... This guy was an example haha

hotaru_oz
22nd October 2008, 12:55 PM
Jesus christ that guy needs a life.
I love WoW but there's no way I would invest that much $$$ and have 36 accounts though.
I'm happy with just the one ^^

I guess he has no problem when Looking For Groups :)

...ya... it's not just time (which is an important thing) but also money... where would have find the time and money to socialise? $5,711 annual subscription and $1,500 for the expansion (and that's USD too)... forget dining out with your friends (or a date!) at a restaurant and catching a movie in the cinemas... as per liegeprime's sig pic, he'll be living off instant noodles!! (O_o)

I know some people who have similar set ups to this - not quite as extreme, but they do have multi computer rigs with a massive mainframe in their house. Lessee... their bath-tub was full of toilet paper rolls and the kitchen was full of pizza boxes... I don't think anyone had ever actually cooked anything in that kitchen.

Toy collecting is an expensive hobby, but it isn't necessarily as time-demanding as gaming.

But on the other hand, at least he's enjoying the money he's spending I suppose. I saw an episode of Simpsons last night where Bart took up coin collecting and he and Homer finally acquired a really rare Kissing Lincoln coin - only to stick in an album and put it on a shelf never to be seen again. Reminds me of people who buy Transformers, stick them in a box and shove it in storage seldom to be seen again. That's why I like displaying and playing with my toys as much as possible - I wanna get my money's worth damnit!!

I read he was planning to raid one of the cities or something

:)I figured I'd put my question here instead of starting another thread, could anyone recommend a Realm for me to start on WoW. I finally bit the bullet and bought the first WoW to give it a go, I'm not a big fan of online gaming mainly because of some of the idiots you have to put up with. I'm not interested in PvP realms either. Any help would be appreciated.:D

Depends what type of gamer you are.

- Are you Player vs Player sort of guy or a Player vs Environment?

- Are you into Role Playing?

I have not played WoW in over two years and have huge issues with its form of Gameplay and reinterpretation of the Traditional Warcraft lore but I have been sent a 10 day trial that includes the expansions. I am tempted to use it since I have never seen the expansion areas.

Player vs Environment, can't be bothered with other Players trying to kill me all the time.

Here are the Australian PvE servers:

Normal
-----------
Caelestrasz
Khaz'goroth
Nagrand
Aman'thul
Dath'remar

Always best to use Australian assigned servers. They are still based in the US but at least the timezone is Sydney based. Before Australian assigned servers I played in an American one and it was a pain. When I played everyone was asleep so finding groups or guild mates online was a frustrating.

If memory serves me right, I have a character in Khaz'goroth.

1orion2many
14th November 2008, 11:05 AM
:)Thanks Kup, I'll set up a character in Khaz'goroth in case you decide you want to start playing again. I'm more than likely going to set up either a Dwarf or Human Paladin. Thought about a Warrior but changed my mind. If I like it I may try making a dwarf hunter as well.:)

On the subject of WoW, I had to drive my younger sister to the shopping center last night so she could attend the EB midnight release party for the latest WoW expansion. The amount of freaky people similar to those I used to see from my past life was incredible. The different social groups and ages I saw leaving and entering the place was very diverse. It just goes to show you the influence of MMO's on society.

I played City of Villians on and off for about 2 years and absolutely loved playing but just dont have the time for it anymore :( oh and i played a trial of WoW all i can say is City of Villians is waaaaay better, cause all you do is walk in WoW. I have heard that WAR is meant to be pretty good.

hotaru_oz

well you'll be walking until you get your mount, there's also portals, boats and flying mounts to help, you don't always have to walk.
I've never played City of Villians before, should give it a go

just wanted to give everyone some reading:

i work at EB games, and was working at the midnight launch, at the store that had the most orders in the state (werribee, 524 orders), and possibly the country...

so anyway, we opened at 10 to allow ppl to prepay their game, and get a ticket for the line later. just before midnight we held a raffle, and some ppl scored some tees, with one dude winning one of the giant promo posters - i was the megaphone for the evening :)

anywho our mob was well behaved - we handed out 212 tickets before midight (but close to 300 ppl there), and sold abt 300 games last night too, and we served everyone within 45 minutes after launch.

but yes a very hectic 2 days at work for myself, having worked from thursday 10am-6pm, then 10pm-2am, then followed it up today 8am-6pm - im a bit tired as i write this :/

btw, wow sucks :D

A friend of mine has convinced me to go back to the game. He says that Lich King has fixed much of the stuff I hated about the base game and that they are going back to the roots of what made warcraft good and moves away from the Space smurfs lore that I hated.

I am downloading the client now since my one is massively obsolete.

The Alliance are racists! read the lore, they send the night elves into battle as operation elven shield, and the rest as operation get behind the darkies.

Ok be alliance (boo!) but don't be human (how bland!)

I haven't got any of the expansions yet as I'm still learning the basics like how do you whisper:o. I haven't even teamed with anyone really except for one guy with a Dwarf hunter, that was alright as he hung back while I hammered away:D. My 2 trades are Mining and Blacksmith, Mining is going alright but blacksmithing is going nowhere. I haven't really found any place I can start at a basic level of smithing to get my skill level up, I think I need to look around a bit more:rolleyes:. I did get invited to a guild the other day but declined, is there any reason to join a guild, as you can see I haven't RTFM (read the flippin manual:o).

Gutsman Heavy
24th November 2008, 03:00 PM
are you on a trial or full account?

I only use mining, a good source of cash. I couldn't keep my blacksmithing up to match my level, so I stopped after lvl20. Make sure you have 'find minerals' activated so you can see ore nodes on your mini map, most towns will have a forge to smelt at.

Guilds are good for having a lot of players at your disposal but are mostly organising for instanced dungeons, raids or PVP.

1orion2many
24th November 2008, 03:12 PM
:oFull account, I went those 2 options as it's just how I see a Dwarf, both mining and smithing. I didn't want my dwarf picking flowers in the snow:o. I just haven't found where I need to go to start at a low level of smithing, the lowest item to smith where I am at the moment is smithing level 15, I of course am sitting on level 1 wanting to increase my level which can't be done until I find a Smithy that teaches level one smithing items. It's a vicious circle at the moment. While I'm grizzling a big hairy snowbeast killed me last night:rolleyes:, I shall try and get my revenge tonight or learn how to run away.:D

I did get my smithing skills to where I wanted and made some armour, the good thing is it's better than what I am wearing so off with the old and on with the new:D, Oh and that big hairy snowbeast killed me again:(. Some passing players threw a couple off spells on me which increased both my attacking ability and armour so I thought I'd go have another go, that was a mistake:o. I dropped out of the Aruthi basin the other day when my server had problems so when I managed to log back in it was to the entrance of this area, unfortunately a couple of high level characters were at this point in time attacking the area, because I had dropped out of the basin my alliance insignia was still alight, boy did they give me a flogging, about 4-5 times in a row they killed me, every time I resurrected the rotten sods were right there to kill me lol.

yeah the longer you're offline, the longer your bar stays blue and a blue bar means double thye EXP.
It also helps to log off in Inns and Taverns especially the one set as your home.
I was once offline for 6 months and my bar was blue for 8 months lol.

I went into blackrock last night and boy did my pali cope it:eek:. 1 on 1 was fine but it doesn't stay that way for long lol. Went in with 3 others, one being level 80. Being the only healer I was meant to stay out of attack range and just heal, doesn't always work though because I seemed to get attacked shortly after healing someone:rolleyes:. I'm tooled up in Retribution anyway so healing is just a side hobby for my Pali:D. I quest with one person on a regular basis, we were both broke (characters that is) when we found a sword(purple) and put it up on the auction house. We ended up with 115G's each, this has been put aside to tool up my DK when I make one;). Not sure which race yet but will decide in the next week or so, might go human or Dranei:cool:.

:oI must be spending to much time on WOW, I'm catching up Hotaru. My Pali should hit 57 tonight. What area are you in, I'm in Khaz Goroth. I have 2 other people I normally hook up with. One Warrior and one Hunter, with me being a Pali we do have a little variety:D. My characters name is Splurtle so if your on the same server you should be able to see me online.;)

Hi Eldan, if you start a new character in Khaz Goroth I can join you up to my guild and help you with dungeon runs to level. 62 now and no that is not my age :D, Level 78 ran me through Ramparts 3 times to level me up, also picked up a heap of gear, unfortunately it wasn't until afterwards that I checked it to see most of it didn't spec up but the weapon I picked up went well past what I was using:cool:.

:oTakes up a lot of time I must admit but it's enjoyable. You just need to set time limits on yourself and still live your regular life but I admit I can get lost in this game it really does suck you in . Anyone know how to set up a guild then:confused:.

10th February 2009, 11:51 AM
u need 6 people i think to sign a guild charter and start a guild..but we need in game experience to lead for raids..if not there would be no point.. >.< and yes this is like a drug!! the addiction is baaaaaad..

:)I was in Hellfire and needed 8000XP for levelling to 63 so I ran to kill something, my friend dropped out of the group and let me get first hits in and then helped me kill, because of the first hits I got alll the Xp because she wasn't in a group with me and Ding levelled with about 1 1/2 minutes left which gave me just enough time to park my dwarf butt in an inn for better doubling:D.

:(I've been flogging along trying to get my epic mount, stupid pali epic. Money hasn't been the issue but everytime I think I'm there I have to do another Q:eek:, other classes just ahve to pay the G from what I can tell:rolleyes:. I'm hoping I'm finally on my last quest to imbue my barding with the equine spirit(stupid horse ghost:p). Tonight maybe tonight, all depends if I can get a couple of people down Diremaul with me as this is where my last quest is(I hope). I'm hoping EB will have a sale soon then they either take off $20 or put it down to half price:).

Gutsman Heavy

yes, but since you can't fly in Northrend untill 77, there isn't much point getting it at 70.

:eek:How can you level so fast:eek:.

with zero skill but useful connections, my GF plays, I recruited her so I got the cool Zebra mount, but also it seems you can grant 1 lvl to each other for every 2 you lvl yourself, she was a lvl 50 when I made the priest, got him to lvl 6 and she gave me 25 lvls in 5 seconds. hehe.

Someone recently made a documentary about my last day of playing WoW a couple of years back:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQg04yR71JU

There are several minor facts wrong since they are from the persepctive of someone who I had met that same day and had no involvement. Eg: I left MMOs altogether that day, I didn't go to Everquest. WoW was really my first and last MMO.

hotaru_oz
19th March 2009, 02:48 PM
I don't think I could ever play another mmo after playing WoW for so long.
I used to play Guild Wars alot but gave up because playing online with a dial up connection was a royal pain.

1orion2many
20th March 2009, 09:05 AM
:oWOW is the only online game I play and it would be about the only game I play at the moment on anything:o:D. My wife says she is a wow widow:rolleyes:. Level 73 almost 74 :D, I had stopped levelling for a while to get my Blacksmithing skills up but started questing again last night, went in 1 instance by myself and lasted about 5 seconds lmao:rolleyes::D

1orion2many
25th March 2009, 12:08 AM
:oI went in a 5 man arena the other day only to discover after helping kill all the beasties that I was one level too low to receive any rewards :rolleyes::D. What a waste of time as the only reason I went in the arena was to get the reward of the axe, OH DOPEY ME :o
