View Full Version : MP-9 Rodimus Convoy Reissue

Due for a 4th quarter release, Hasbro Asia is reissuing MP-9 Rodimus Convoy.
This is a re-release of the Takara version not the Hasbro one so will come with the battle platform/trailer rather then the Targetmaster partner.
Along with this news is information that this isn't just a straight up reissue but that they are fixing the issues with the knees so that they will no longer break.
As someone that only managed to get the Hasbro version I'm looking forward to this as it means I can finally have a complete Rodimus Prime without paying the ridiculously high aftermarket prices the original goes for.
The fixed knees is especially sweet icing on the cake.

In one knee or across both of them? :D

Good news for anybody who wants this mould at a reasonable price. The ones on eBay are pretty expensive.
The reissue revised the problem of easy knee fracture.
I thought it was specifically Black Rodimus Prime that had weak knees.
I have the first release of MP-9, and it has issues, but its knees are fine.

I had the Targetmaster version which I use for my MP Rodimus and then use the MP28 version for Hot Rod. But I admit, I’ve always felt he was less for not having his trailer so depending on price I’ll be picking this up

Sold my V2 version long ago and kind of regret it. I’m all over this especially if they’ve fixed the qc issues.

Any of the same flaws as the regular version?

The knees were the main failure of the black version. Many of them (mine included) were shipped with already cracked ratchets in the knees (youd have to open up the thigh and shin to visually confirm the cracks, and anything more than like a 45 degree bend would stress them further and snap them completely.

Bad design Masterpiece, mine stayed in robot mode and I refused to even bend the knee. Will not be buying even if is ver 2. I had a lot of issues with this masterpiece.
knee felt like going to break, the hands will not even hold the gun, the transformation was not the best.

Awesome, my patience has been rewarded. And if it's not too much ask could they reissue MP-09B too? Always wanted the black one.

If the reissue is not too much, maybe. And maybe a black version again coz a knee cracked first time i moved it

Same, count me as one of the lucky few with no major issues. It is a really cool piece, and sits nicely as a Rodimus Prime.

Happy that this is being reissued with fixes.
My only concern is what they'll be asking for this these days seeing that prices have gone up for most of the MPs.

I've never understood, with this toy being so maligned, disappointing and unwanted, why is the aftermarket price so amazingly high, even after the release of the new design MP hotrod.

Is because it was not reissued for a long period of time and it represent Rodimus not hot rod. The TRU "hot Rod" version was supposed to be better build but even then I know someone who broke a joint on that version. This was one of the worse MP till date but I know some people who love it.
I simply dont like it that I could not get him to hold his gun, or have him pose properly. Not to mention ver 1 have a bad backpack issue that it doesn't clip on.
The new hot rod on the other hand was a better overall figure, the only down side was that it hardly was able to roll in vehicle mode. Otherwise a better attempt. But it isn't Rodimus prime
Most masterpieces sky rocket in prices are only due to the fact that a reissue was not done for a long period of time.

Maybe so many were damaged/defective, it left very few on the secondary market for people to fight over, and thus drove up the price.

Maybe, but I've never noticed a shortage of overpriced ones on eBay, even when all the lunchtime specials were popping up they were way overpriced.

Can't argue with that, it was/is a very ambitious concept.

My understanding is that the weak knees were specific to the Black Rodimus version, and not a big issue with the original.
It can't be ruled out altogether, but I'm sceptical Rodimus Prime will get an all-new mould. The existing one is already very screen-accurate, at least from the front. The problems with the original release were addressed in the 'version 2' production run, so by now it should be a solid figure.

I suspect it is a response to the readiness of fans to pay increasingly high prices for MP toys over the last few years. If a company can double the price and only lose 25% of the potential market in the process, then it’s worth it to them.
(Figures quoted are invented for the purpose of illustration only, I admit I am merely speculating).

Yeah look not sure - probably bc it's 2018 and approaching 8 years since the original was released?
Don't you get tired of recycling the same old "oh I don't pay more than original RRP" argument? You even apply it to vintage G1 collecting in 2018. How does that even hold water?

Isn't this reissue exclusive to china...which implies to me that DOESN'T include hong kong, the shops selling it may be factoring in the shipping/middle man retrieval, PLUS the fact its a long sought after figure for some
I'm gonna hold out for another remake, I can make way for another prime somehow but I'll be damned if I have 2 rodmius primes and a hotrod

Original RRP (https://tf.takaratomy.co.jp/products-lineup/tf_mp/mp-09) was 16800JPY, or 17640JPY if we include tax, which works out to be AU$220 today - although the Aussie Dollar was really strong in 2011, at times reaching if not even exceeding parity against the USD, so it was more like $200. I was in China when this toy came out and I remember seeing it in Beijing, and if I'd bought it at the time it would've worked out to be about an even $200. But yeah, even at current exchange rates it'd be around $220.
I know a guy who's preordered this MP9 reissue for $340, so about $120 above its initial RRP. Even factoring in inflation that seems like a steep hike to me. <shrugs> My guess is that this must be a limited production run (if this is true then fair enough, lower volume = higher prices).

this would be it considering its limited to one location, now someone remind me, is it limited to china specifically or hong kong (I was told they're treated differently :S)

It must be even tighter than just being a regional exclusive, as we've seen Sinophone* exclusives before that weren't priced like this IIRC. It may be because it's a Sinophone store exclusive that are made in fewer numbers. This is why the TakaraTOMY MPs sold at TRUs here were so expensive, they were released here in small volumes.
There was going to be another MP released this year, but that's obviously not happened because all know what happened to TRU. Kinda annoying for me because I've done the translation work for this toy but I haven't been "paid" with the figure Hasbro AU never received any stock. :/ (I still can't say what this toy is because last I heard Hasbro were looking for another retail buyer to take it). Encore God Fire Convoy was also really expensive. My guess is that it was also a limited run (shame that it was mired by all kinds of QC issues). And this would probably be why the MP Coneheads were so expensive being TakaraTOMY Mall exclusives.
Gah... I miss the days when limited exclusives were the same price as their regular store counterparts (e.g. eHobby exclusives etc.). Maybe that model wasn't financially viable. <shrugs>

Given that people seem to be happy to pay up to $700 or $800 on eBay for the original release, Takara could have charged a lot more and still sold a lot of product.
I've never understood why the secondary market was so high for this guy, especially since the newer version of MP hot rod, but also taking into account all the complaints about the QC of the original.

QC issues which Hasbro largely addressed with MP Rodimus Prime
i.e.
thicker weapon tabs that allow Roddy to hold onto the weapons properly
better paint on the spoiler that's not as prone to scratching when being inserted and removed from the trailer (even if it didn't come with one).
Refer to this thread (http://otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=12145) where 1AZRAEL1 and I compared TakaraTOMY's and Hasbro's MP9s. :)
But yeah, most if not all of the work has already been done for them by Hasbro.

The Hasbro version however was a lot better.

I got really lucky with my V1 Rodimus. The only issue I have is the one that all V1s have which is the slot for the wing is too narrow and would take the paint off the wing. That issue was fixed on the first reissue of Rodimus by the gap being made slightly wider.
On the other hand, my Hasbro Rodimus was a piece of garbage. The knee broke on the second transformation. Good thing I bought him for his new hat Targetmaster.
