Bless you Other, you just made my day!

I've always wanted to see an English translation of these released, and I remember that IDW were initially considering this when they first got the license (as a fill in, until they had their full comic lineup on steam). I've read scanlations of bits and pieces, but it's not really accessible. To get a print version, it would be a dream come true.

So how much of an english translation are we talking about here, will the names characters and stories going to be "adapted" for the existing english fanbase much like the unicron trilogy, are we gonna see a literal translation and be boring/dull, how will this work?

While I'm curious to see how this goes it's mostly because I'm a weeb lol

Just be aware, they don't say if the book will be translated... it could just be a reprint, maybe with an english cover.
If it is translated, I'd buy it, even though I already have the original Japanese book.
(it might make more sense to be in English for an American release, but that would be a huge project, since it is a very big book of over 600 pages)

Viz is a publisher that has been releasing translated Manga in America for several decades, not once have they ever released a book that's sole difference is an english cover while retaining Japanese interiors, in fact I've never heard of anyone doing that ever. And 600 pages is nothing, Viz often publishes 20+ 180 page titles a month+ several digital only volumes and chapters. No offense meant Griff, but that's a real mind boggler of a post.

Now listed on Amazon America (https://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Manga-Ban-Magami/dp/1974710564/), for release on February 11th 2020, for US$25.

Originally serialized in Japan’s TV Magazine, these classic stories from the Generation 1 era of Transformers are now available in English for the first time!

The Autobots and Decepticons have been locked in a brutal civil war for eons, and now their battle has come to Earth! The Autobots seek peace and coexistence, while the Decepticons seek power and control. Earth and its populace are caught between the two as these mighty factions go head-to-head. Transformers took the world by storm shortly after their debut, and these previously uncollected stories were a vital part of that takeover!

The Autobots and their young friend Kenji stand tall against the Decepticons in an interplanetary conflict! Packed with thrilling Transformers tales, this hardcover collector’s volume contains classic stories such as “The Great Transformer War” and “Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers.”

If you were sitting on the fence on this it is currently Only $17.12US Pre Order price Guarantee and Global Shipping was around $9US for me for 2 copies Link (https://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Manga-Vol-1/dp/1974710564/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=transformers+manga&qid=1567737514&s=gateway&sr=8-1)

I am excited to see English Translations of these Obscure Transformers Adventures. If you want a bit more incite in what to expect TFU Info has a podcast "Link Here" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTuOWEXr1XU&list=PLVlwyeBOK67ywYrd05wzdjcBoIl4XS4HS&index=68&t=0s) where he discusses a few of the Manga Comics from 1986

A second volume is now on Amazon for May, so they are breaking it up into two volumes... which would make sense, as the Japanese compilation book was huge, and since the first Amazon listing says 288 pages, the Japanese book was about 500 pages.

-- Transformers The Manga Vol 1 (https://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Manga-Vol-1/dp/1974710564/) HC - 288 pages (Japanese TV Magazine Manga - translated) - February 11th 2020
-- Transformers The Manga Vol 2 (https://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Manga-Vol-2/dp/1974711773/) HC - ??? pages (Japanese TV Magazine Manga - translated) - May 12th 2020

US$25 each though... which is about right for comic compilations of that size (usually about US$20 for ones that are about 200 pages).

Why am I getting forebodings about these involving young girls and Tentakil

It can't be worse than the Kissplay manga (https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Kissplay#Controversy) with underage girls and robots with phallic tounges....

If there's a Urotsukidoji-like Transformers parody on the net, I do not want to know about it.:(

KISS Play was explicitly made for MA15+ audiences, whereas this manga is from the 80s and was targeted at kids. Plus this was the ONLY time that Hubcap and the Omnibots ever appeared in original G1 era canon! Now it will be available in English. :)

It's a pass for me for obvious reasons but stoked to see it becoming available for wider audiences. :)

Never been a comics guy, think the only comics I read were a couple of the Dreamwave ones back in the day, but I am tempted to get on this.

This item was announced a while ago so there may be a thread on this somewhere but the Transformers: The Manga vol 1 (English translation) is now available to preorder at Amazon and some other book shops.

Transformers: The Manga, Vol. 1 (Volume 1) https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/1974710564/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_MYxhEbQF2QGEA

Hardcover, 288 pages for $37 is pretty good.

Vol 2 is also up for order at other stores.

Did they add anything extra for the English translation edition by any chance?

Yep, but it was a while ago, so I had to go back a few pages to find it.

Post #15 has the second volume link too.

It looks like the first volume has been delayed a month to March 10th, but the second volume still has a release date of May 12th.

A third volume has been listed on amazon (https://news.tfw2005.com/2020/02/10/transformers-the-manga-volume-3-by-viz-media-new-listing-on-amazon-com-405073).
This third volume is noted as being 378 pages, and with the other two being about 288 pages each, that's a lot more than the 630 pages of the original Japanese book... so they must be including a lot of extra things.

I wonder if they'll use the Anglophone or Japanese names in their translation.
e.g. will Optimus Prime be called Optimus Prime or Convoy? Will the Autobots be called Autobots or Cybertrons? ...etc

P.S.: If I were doing the translations I'd use the Anglophone names.

griffin

I'd prefer the Japanese names for the campiness of some of the early names... and because I don't want to see retconned Hasbro names like Ricochet instead of Stepper. After all, this is the Japanese Manga Universe so dont need American Universe names.

It might be easier to understand with Anglonames (a factor if Viz wants to sell subsequent volumes), but I'd still be happy with Convoy and Stepper instead.

I recently got the 2nd volume, and after originally wondering how these translated volumes could total over 900 pages when the original was just under 600 pages, I noticed that these new volumes have about 100 pages of added artwork, which will make up the extra 300 pages of these ones.
(the texture of the covers is really weird)
