Ok folks this thread is definitely one that's been needed.

When faced with troubling obstacles as regards to forum use and options or you just want a bit of advice on what dress to wear on that date with the hunky motorcycle guy from across the road then come and sit on Uncle Iceburns knee, receive a free wowwipop and ask away...

I'll go first...

"Unky Iceburn...I can't find the advice you gave on increasing the number of posts viewed per page. Can you please repeat that for me?"

"Thanks in advance Unky!";)

Not sure if this is relevant - it's technical but not about the board.

Recently my digital camera doesn't seem to recharge properly. I always recharge my camera after I use it, but recently even after it appears to be fully charged (with the battery symbol indicating that it is full) the power seems to be draining a lot quicker. When I first bought this camera, I could go around shooting heaps of photos without needing a recharge. Now it only lasts for not even a few hours before blinking that red "empty" battery icon and soon showing other signs of being depleted of power.

I haven't owned another digital camera before this - and it's about 2-3 years old now... so what I'm curious to know is - does this mean that the rechargeable battery has run its due and I need to buy a replacement?

Most likely is a battery age issue, Gok.

Did you have an INITIAL charge for the battery that should usually be longer for the normal usual charging hours (it takes to become full)? Most probably and i assume you did then it must be a technical fault with your camera.

Are you saying that this digital camera is 2-3yrs old? If yes, then well..its about time to change battery i assume.

to fully utilise rechargeable batteries, it needs to be run down once in awhile (just like the batteries inside a laptop).. I do that fortnightly...

with camera rechargeables (lithium-ion), I don't charge it until it has run flat. my konica kd-500z which I bought back in those days (7yrs??) is still running like new.

standard rechargeable batteries (like AA size), usually can only be charge 1000-1500 times, and if you have been charging it everyday, then I would say those batteries is near the end of their life.

I have the opposite problem actually.

Can't view it in IE but I can in FF.

But that's because i'm running Vista and the plug-in isn't fully compatible for Vista IE.

Best guess here would be to download the latest versions of Flash and Java and install them.

If the download doesn't fix it then try Internet Explorer, if it works there then Firefox is at fault and I suggest you repair it.

Use the following as reference:

try going into

Under Printing Options, tick Background printing and also
Under Include with document, tick Background colors and images?

Dear Unky Iceburn,

I am in desperate need of your help good sir. Last night as I was battling away on 2142 my game/comp froze between maps.
I Ctrl+Alt+Delete'd to end the game from there. Got the 'Program not responding, end now?' box. Clicked on it.

Then when I tried to restart computer Windows wont load.
Get the black screen saying 'blah blah...with options 'Start in Safe Mode, Last known good configuration, Start Windows normally'.

Ok. I need help and this would probably be a good place to ask for it
*blows dust of thread*

My computer's having trouble working with the network.
I have resorted to hooking the ADSL router right into the PC through the USB cable we got with it.
My PC seems to be able to detect the network and everything on it. But as soon as I need to access something on the internet, or print something, it just wont load/do anything.

Couple of things we tested out:
The ADSL router and the Wireless router's network cable ports both work fine. We tested the connections by hooking up my brothers laptop and disabling his wireless connection, worked fine.
Tried hooking the ADSL router into the PC through the network port, didn't wok either.
Tried re-installing the drivers, didn't help (probably done wrong though)

so, can anyone help?

You don't have a valid computer address. Any address starting with 169.254 means that the computer wasn't offered an address by another device so it picks a random one that starts with that prefix.

Either your mode/router is misconfigured and is not giving your computer an address, or you are supposed to initiate a connection from your computer (e.g. PPPoE)

The first thing I'd do is get rid of USB. It's not meant for networking. Plug in the Ethernet/network cable instead and then come back with the output of ipconfig again.

jaydisc

OK, I get it now. The wireless router seems misconfigured. There are two ways to setup your wireless router:

1. As a simple access point, meaning it simply bridges wireless to wired. If this was working, your machine would be able to get a non-169.254 address when hanging off the wireless.

2. As a router, which means that it translates between your wireless and wired connection. This is NOT ideal as you already have a router/translator in your ADSL device translating between your house and your ISP. Two translators is generally not a good thing. If this was working, your router would be assigning you a non-169.254 address itself, which it isn't.

Let's start talking about make and models. What is the ADSL modem and what is the wireless router?

I think the best thing to do is reset the wireless router and reconfigure it from scratch.

that looks much better...is it working now?

The usb option works, but it means that I can't use anything else that uses the Wireless modem. Things like my printer, Wii as well as my mum's and brother's laptops. Hence why I'm trying to get the Ethernet connection running again

The Wireless router is a Netgear MR814 v3
The ADSL router is a D-Link DSL-502T

1. As a simple access point, meaning it simply bridges wireless to wired.

This is what it used to be when it worked. It was just so my brother and mum could uses the internet as well as letting me Wii connect.
The thing is that if I set up the original set up, everything but the computer can use the internet

Can you just plug the PC into the back of the Netgear WIRED? Is it only on WIRELESS that the PC doesn't work?

Also, have you tried connecting the PC direct to the DLink over Ethernet instead of USB?

heres an interesting one.
when i set up our wireless network my parents decided that they should know the password for the router, and only them. now the only problem is that they have forgotten it :(
its a D-Link 614+ ( i think, i cbf'd getting up to check)
is there anything i can do short of resetting the router and starting all over again?

iceburn

every router has a reset button.
Continue to hold the reset button for 20 seconds after reconnecting the power. Wait for the router to reboot. Log in with the default password.

I hope that will work. The computers I am using are restricted so I cant try either option yet. If anybody gets an odd message from 'me' or sees 'me' on msn please let me know via a PM :(

I am so glad all my bookings etc are through my gmail account.

You can use a web site like ebuddy.com or meebo.com to log into MSN.

meebo and ebuddy both give me the "password incorrect" error. I want to try with the actual MSN client when I can find a computer with that on it.

I've tried this now and am still locked out. Looks like that email address is gone, along with all the emails in it, to digital heaven. There goes all my msn contacts, my ebay account, and probably other things I can't think of. :(

Does anyone know if it is it possible to change the password on a hotmail account with typing in your current password?

PB, if you have an alternate email address listed in Hotmail settings.. you should be able to change it.

Hi guys - I have a general computer problem that is preventing me from using the Internet (and thus visiting the forum) from home.

My Toshiba Tecra A2's Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG has ceased to detect my home wireless network when I 'View Available Wireless Networks' on Windows XP, regardless of my proximity to the network. Consequently, it will not log on to the Internet. It does, however detect at least seven other nearby networks - just not my own. This is particularly odd, since Sarah's laptop is still detecting the network and her internet is functioning as per usual. Thus, I'm assuming it's a fault within my laptop rather than with the router/modem etc. I've tried switching everything off and on again, as well as a system restore. So the main reasons why I'm at a loss as to what to do are:

a.) it was all working at 7am in the morning, but when I came back to the computer at 11:30am it had stopped detecting my network. Nothing new had been done to the laptop in this period. It just stopped detecting.

b.) it still detects other networks, but not our household one. (This is the weirdest bit.)

c.) everything is still working fine on our local network from Sarah's wireless laptop.

Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem might be?

Thanks!

After dealing with Microsoft and providing lots of details about the content of my Hotmail inboxes, I now have access again to my Hotmail/MSN account.

It appears someone did change my password and while they had access they changed my Ebay account password, listed an item for sale and then Ebay realised some fraud was going and suspended my account.

I have access to Ebay again now but still working out if my account's still suspended or not. I have one email saying "you're suspended" that came after one that said "your account's been disabled for your safety".

A couple of tips if I may:

1. Pick good passwords. If your password is in the dictionary, you've failed. Make sure it's a combination of letters, numbers and characters, Make it a sentence if that helps, e.g. 1thinkp@sswordsSuck!

2. Do not participate in security questions, e.g. What is your Mother's maiden name? I know that in most cases you have to participate, so what I mean, is don't choose the correct answer. It's way too easy to find out someone's mother's maiden name, their favorite sports team, or the town they were born in. So, always put false information. Be consistent with your false information for your own sake.

3. Do the same thing for your birthday. Give yourself an alternate birthday and use that all the time.

My tip is register similar or linked accounts with different email address.

The person who stole my hotmail address was able to request a lost password from ebay, but fortunately my paypal account is registered to a different email so they couldn't pull of the scam they tried to do.

(Also fortunate that my bank requires SMS codes to change details so they couldn't pull the same trick with them as well)

When phones get wet...it's the worst situation of all. it's best you consider getting a new phone as repair costs are not fixed and it could even be worth getting a new one fast and quick.

okay.... this is abit tricky
old phones used to read memories from simcard direct
as newer phones evolved with memory cards of their own, the memory by default will be stored in the phone and no longer the sim card.

there are settings in the phone to which you can twig to have your new/old contacts saved and backed up to the simcard for future use.
the reason why you are seeing your friend's contact and messages is because it's not accessing your simcard directly.... you'll find a few of your old contacts still stored safely if you had it for quite awhile now. *mine did, trust me* :D

This looks the best place to ask this, although it's more a software than hardware issue.

On Facebook when you remove a friend I know they don't get a message. But what if you decide that deleting the friend was a rather rash decision made in the heat of anger and want to add them back. Do they get a new Friend Request or not because they already once accepted your request?

If they also deleted me as a friend I'd imagine that a request would be required, but I'm wondering if the other person didn't actively knock back my friendship (the way I did :o ) they might not even know I deleted them...

DID YOU DELETE ME!? *checks friends list* :p

To answer your question, they'll get a new friend request. At least it's not like that Hungry Jack's campaign with an application where if you deleted ten friends you'd get a free burger, however the friend would get an automated message on their page saying they had been deleted and why.

So no sneaking around the fact I removed someone from my friends list. Darn it. Oh well there was a good reason I removed him and I probably should leave it like that.

I'm assuming you mean your wireless network at home? Depending on the brand of your wireless modem/router, you need to find your router login details (usually its n ip address, eg 192.168.x.x) You then need to find the default login and password. normaly its written on the bottom of the router/ modem. and will be something like,
username: admin
password 123456 or just password.

Once your in, you need to navigate to the security settings (again where these settings are located will vary by brand) and firstly change your router logon password, then find your wireless settings and set the kind of key you want to use. WEP WPPA etc, it should generate you a alpha numerical key which is what will grant wireless devices (such as laptops, iphones, psp) access to your wireless connection =]
