A number of Transformers fans have applied to be the ABC's Hard Quiz program in the last year, and only one could get through. This Wednesday on the final episode for the current series, we get to see who was chosen as the lucky one to represent our favourite hobby to the rest of Australia, pitted against three other contestants who are bringing three other topics to the episode.

The episode is on Wednesday night on the ABC, at 8pm, and will be repeated a couple times later in the week, as well as being available on their online service or app.

Hard Quiz is currently one of the ABC's highest rating programs, so we should get a fair bit of exposure of the Brand to regular Australians from this episode. Hopefully the Transformers fan on this week's episode manages to make it through to the end, and is the winner of the big brass mug.

Why the non disclosure of the identity of TF fan? Was it at their request?

Okay, I'll start the guessing game, in order of priority:
1. BTT
2. Paulbot
3. Krayt
Dark horse: Sky Shadow

I'm curious to see how hard this Hard Quiz is. Looking forward to playing along at home. ;)

There's a discussion in the Kup's Discussion thread about it, a few people like Trev and Griffin applied, but it appears that Transformers had been filled as a topic area, but no one indicated that they had stepped forward.

Possibly one of the other collector groups.

Gok - I have a feeling you're going to find it easy, based on your knowledge. :D

I'm not a big fan of the show, the only episode I watched in full was the episode one of my former work colleagues was on, but I'll be watching this and playing along at home.

Well done for being the one they chose from those of us who applied last year. I managed to get through to the group interview round, but I didn't seem to have what they were looking for. After they had us do a written quiz, an interview on our interest, and a verbal quiz, it ended up coming down to just the verbal quiz of general knowledge questions as the only reason they selected 5 or 6 people from our group of 30. It didn't seem to matter what your topic was, or how well you knew it... it just mattered that you could respond to verbal questions, of random topics.

It was a shame that we didn't know about your episode before the filming though, as we could have organised a cheer squad in the audience for you.
I hope you had as much fun as it looks.

And as Paulbot said, no spoilers on how well you did... so that we can play along on Wednesday.

Gratz. Though being an ABC show I'm guessing you didn't come away from the show a cool million dollars richer. :p

Yeah I still have no idea why I got picked. I felt like really mucked up the verbal quiz bit.
To be honest a cheer squad would have probably made me even more nervous than I already was. Really nice thought though.

Congrats on winning. :D

I was really pleased to see Sebastian get to the final round, as I would have been really curious to see what HQ considered "hard" questions for Transformers.

(someone was a bit nervous... :p ...I would have been too)

I don't know that I agree with their answers. Transformers was called Diakron/Diaclone, not Car Robots.

Yeah, that bothered me as well... as it sounded like something they got from a retail product listing.
I would have only got four of the five correct in the first round though - I knew that Ratchet was originally written up as a female, but I didn't know (or remember) that it was based on a nurse from One Flew over the Cuckoos nest.

The final round questions...
- I didn't know the first one about the Designer's favourite toy being Perceptor. I would have guessed Sunstreaker (the first one) or Optimus.
- The second one about Kibble is something every fan knows about, and hates... :p
- The third one was about Gen1 Megatron's gun mode being from Man From Uncle is a Gen1 fan question.
- And the fourth question about what a toy turns into was something I expected they'd ask at some point, as one of the questions I had at the group interview was if I could recognise just about any toy and it's alt-mode.
(a pity you did so well that we didn't find out what the fifth questions was)

Soooooo jealous.

Rocky start but you came home... um... HARD! Awesome job Sebimus!

(I totally didn’t know the Perceptor question, and guessed at the Man From UNCLE. Reckon I had the others).

Paulbot

I wanted to know the last question too.

But looking back over my answers, I wonder did the researchers just watch the Toys That Made Us episode because I think all of these topics might have been raised in that episode (including the Perceptor one).

"Car Robots" was a subline of Diaclone... which is what they were using. But it's still incorrect, given that the FIRST batch of Transformers included the Seekers, amongst others.

It kind of got me too. I was so prepared for it to be Diaclone, think that's why I think I mucked it up. I'm glad they cut the bit where I tried to explain it though.

Congrats on winning. :D

I didn't realise how nervous I was until I watched it back.
I also remember thinking how easy those last ones were. I kind of feel like they just watched Chris McFeely's Basics series for their trivia. haha.

And for everyone who's asked... (Couldn't figure out how to embed it)

Well played! It's easy for us sitting in the comfort of our own homes to play along, but obviously more nerve-wracking when you're on national television. :)

I actually fumbled on 3 questions:
* the one about Ratchet (I answered "Nurse Ratchet," which is the character, not the film)
* the one about Bayformers Bumblebee's alt mode (I said VW Beetle :p)
* the one about Yoke Hideaki's favourite TF (I just plain didn't know - also the host's mispronunciation of "Hideaki" was offputting for me, although he did pronounce "Yoke" correctly (which a lot of other people don't)).

Congrats on winning Hard Quiz! Btw, feel free to check out the Transformers Trivia thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php/24256-Daily-Transformers-Trivia) and have a play at past questions, or feel free to test us and post questions of your own! :)

P.S.: I love the expression "on brand" and I think I'll start using this in my personal lexicon now.

Congrats on the quiz. I got 2 wrong;
Megatron being based on Man from Uncle (For some reason i thought it was James Bond, but as soon as you said it I remembered the picture from the show with one of them with the gun.
And The Optimus Playstation one for some DEMENTED reason I said CD player, not playstation.

Just streamed it. Well done Sebastian! Despite the nerves (and i would've been in exactly the same boat) you did great, and not only chalked up a brilliant win against nature (take that snake guy!) but also great exposure for Transformers.

The only question I did stumble on was Perceptor. I wonder what the last question would've been?

Would've been great to meet Tom too..... personal favourite comedian of mine :)

Hope Grimmy is enjoying his new Golden Throne! :D

Great job Sebastian! You did really well. That first question threw me as well. I knew the answer but my mouth kept wanting to say Diaclone.

I’m pretty sure the images they showed were all from The Toys That Made Us so maybe that was where most of their research was from?

Congratulations on the win, I thought you were in for a tough final round as the Snake contestant had done well throughout and the questions were less transformers related and more ?linked? to transformers. Good to see that you couldn?t be bamboozled by Toms repeated jabs!

Congrats on the win! I knew about kibble and perceptor but not ratchet
So Bob Budiansky originally intended for Ratchet to be a female Autobot medic, and the name is an homage to the character nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Flew_Over_the_Cuckoo%27s_Nest_(novel)). But Hasbro didn't like this idea and decided that Ratchet would be male. So yeah, the idea of female Transformers actually existed at the very beginning of Transformers. And we know that other people have attempted to bring female TFs into the toyline, notably Arcee (who did have a prototype toy but never made it to production) but Hasbro kept on resisting the idea. It wouldn't be until Beast Wars when we finally saw female Transformers in Western markets in the form of Blackarachnia and Airazor.

the man from uncle (I thought Bond too).
Both the Man from UNCLE and James Bond use Walther pistols, but Bond's pistol is a Walther PPK whereas the Man From UNCLE uses a fictitiously modified Walther P38 (i.e. actual pistol with scope, extended silencer barrel and stock). So the Microman toy that would become Megatron was originally the Micro Change Gun Robo Walther P38 UNCLE, as opposed to the regular Walther P38 Gun Robo which has no add ons (this would later become Goodbye Megatron).
https://i.ibb.co/prdXX36/temp.jpg

Car robots?
Yeah, that question was not well worded, but since it ended with "Car" then logically the only possible answer was "Robot." Car Robot is a sub-line of Diaclone which is where toys like Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus and the Autobot Cars are from. It's not a great question (and I think this might be what stumped Sebastian) because the entire question was this:
"Launched by Hasbro in 1984, Transformers was based on a Japanese toyline known as Car what?"
It's just not true that Transformers was based on Diaclone Car Robot - not entirely anyway. Just Prime, Magnus and the Autobot Cars. But there are plenty of other Diaclone toys outside of Car Robot which became Transformers including: Dashers (Powerdashers), Baku-ten Attack Robo (Jumpstarters), Double Changers (Omnibots), Triple Changer Jet Type (Blitzwing), Construction Vehicle Robo (Constructicons), Train Robo (Trainbots), Jet Machine Robo (Decepticon Seeker Jets), Dinosaur Robo (Dinobots), Insecter Robo (Insecticons) etc. And then of course, you have all the other non-Diaclone Japanese toylines that contributed to Transformers including Microman, Dorvack, Macross, Astro Magnum, Mechabot-1, Beetras, Whatever-the-Hell-line-Sky-Lynx-is-from, Machine Robo etc. :)

2000's Transformers Car Robot was named after Diaclone Car Robot, and the character Mach Alert was an homage to the New Countach LP500S Patrol Car Type (http://diaclone.net/orid/dia038/index.html) (aka Cordon; because Lamborghini Japanese police cars aren't a thing IRL ;)).
