Up to 75 Target stores to close, or be converted to K-Mart stores:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-05-22/up-to-75-target-stores-to-be-closed-down-others-to-be-converted/12275390

Not sure if that will impact Transformers collectors. I haven’t bought much from Target for a good while (prices often cheaper elsewhere), but less options in the market is not usually a positive move for consumers.

They haven't been great for Transformers, and aren't price competitive like kmart and bigw, but give another option to those in cities, particularly with sales.
I don't think they've had any exclusives for a while, but I think they might have had something this year.
If they go completely it will be one less source of sale catalogues for price-matching... something we are already suffering from with the loss of ToysRUs.

My concern is that they will be closing about 50 target country stores and a lot of those places might not have significant toy options.
And TC stores I've been to over the years were not big enough to be putting other stores out of business in small country towns.

it's a shame, Target has been a mainstay of Australian retail for years. I do buy transformers there, often with price matching and they have been pretty good with toy sales over the last few years. At least keeping Big W competitive.

There's a target country in my parents home town, it's toy section is a joke, as are most of it's other sections. if thats representative it's not even worth considering. there are two other dedicated toy stores and a Kmart there which are always better options.

It has been a pretty solid source for SS Voyagers over the last few years.

Not surprised with the announcement. Wonder if Big W will follow with further store closures.

I just goto target for clothing mostly. Their clothes are pretty good compared to the crap quality a lot of menswear is today. this will be a pain for me if my nearest Target is converted to a Kmart.

targethas been pretty much a waste of space for years which is sad, i got my first ever MP from them. Mp02 they had a whole shelf full one day and i had no idea what it was but i took the chance and forked out the $100 (hindsight i wish i had bought them all).

also got my metrotitan there a few years ago

From the list of locations I know this makes a lot of business sense. A lot of the larger towns have a Target simply because Target got there first and the town is now in the market for a Kmart. I'm sure the Target Country stores will be missed by some but a lot of them are being made redundant by the fact that a lot of country folk now do their shopping at shopping centres in regional cities if not the capital.

They're so hit and miss....the Target in the Launceston CBD is absolutely shithouse. Terrible presentation, lazy staff...one of the worst toy sections of any store I've ever seen.

Meanwhile, the Mowbray Target - less than 5kms away - is fantastic. Great presentation, clean store, always plenty of stock. Good management and staff goes a long way, apparently.

Neither of those stores are closing but the Launceston CBD one should be closed.

It seems like my local is safe (despite having very little people every time I go there). While Target may not be the best for Transformers (and other stuff), I liked them just in case they got something in that ran out of stock at other stores, which has happened a few times.

What's interesting is that this list is so dominated by towns rather than suburbs.

Campbelltown is the only Sydney store listed (and that had already been announced)... Bacchus Marsh the only Melbourne store. I guess the limited range Target can supply in smaller stores cannot complete with the range available on the internet?

PS MURWILLUMBAH isn't in Queensland...

Target Country in Nowra (where I grew up) never had a toy section anyway so  So the big toy sale was always sad for me as a kid because they would only ever have the few items that made the first page at the front of the store but nothing else, but i'd see the catalogue/ads and want the other stuff hahaha

Shame those VIC Country Target stores will be closing. I pop in when I'm on work travel.

*snip* Bacchus Marsh the only Melbourne store. *snip*
Bacchus Marsh being at the very fringe of Metro Melbourne it may as well be a country store.

Shame, as they have in past years offered exclusives not found elsewhere, including Target US branded exclusives during DoTM, energon and even armada.

Target have better quality than kmart. Sounds like target country is a bit like your corner deli, not much selection and variety.

Sorry, my typo. Used a spreadsheet to join the web lists together, plus my own formatting. Corrected now.

None in Perth are on the chopping block, which I'm glad about. Some non-Transformers exclusive toys I've bought from Target now and then, as well as TFs I've missed out at other retailers.

Not your error; The Target Website had it as Queensland!

Langwarrin is also Melbourne metro (far southern suburb, near Frankston), but it’s a Target Country and very small. Not surprised about that one.

Also, Maryborough is in Queensland, not Victoria. Not surprised they would close that one, Maryborough isn't what it used to be since much of its industry has shut down over the years.

There's a Maryborough in Victoria, also. That said, I have NO idea if there's a Target there.

Yeah. I know of it cos it has the somewhat mean nickname of "Scaryborough"... and a rep to match. But I don't know how deserved the nickname and rep are.
