View Full Version : Rise of the Beasts 7th Movie production news

The next Transformers Movie from Paramount is still un-titled and the story is unknown (we still don't know which of the two proposed next projects will be the "7th" Movie)... but a bit of news has Paramount partnering with New Republic Pictures (https://news.tfw2005.com/2020/08/21/new-republic-pictures-to-co-finance-transformers-7-417590), which suggests that it will be another big-budget production (over a certain dollar amount and even the big movie studios like Paramount needs to share the expense/risk).

This comes from the collapse of their partnership with a Chinese production company after the Last Knight film resulted in a poor profit performance and a dispute over on-screen coverage of certain Chinese brands and locations that were in the original contract.

As these early news crumbs are found, I'll probably keep them all in one news topic, as they won't attract too much attention until something significant is announced, and then we will have some separate news topics to help keep the major updates easy to find.

hang on, is this another movie aside from Bumblebee 2? Surely they're not thinking of running them concurrently? Are they?

That's the uncertain bit, as different projects have been noted, at different times by different sources - a sequel to Bumblebee, an animated movie, and a movie to follow on from the Michael Bay universe of five movies.
Until something is officially greenlit with a set budget, I think it is all just speculation by different invested parties (property owners and investors) who are probably just throwing in their opinions on which project they prefer to see produced next.

So, it looks like there were two potential movies being worked on at the beginning of the year (Bumblebee 2 & Beast Wars), but the Bumblebee 2 movie has won out (https://news.tfw2005.com/2020/11/16/steven-caple-jr-set-to-direct-the-next-installment-of-transformers-movie-franchise-424175), and a Director has already been chosen - Steven Caple Jr (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Caple_Jr.).

Caple is a bit like Travis Knight, in that he has very little Movie experience, but has had one big movie under his belt, with "Creed 2" (the most recent in the Rocky franchise).
Even Michael Bay had a very small resume when he signed up to the 2007 Transformers movie back in 2005... he just managed to have a couple of them generate big bucks for the film studios.

“In January, the studio made the decision to give the entire franchise a revamp by having two simultaneous scripts that are in active development: one by James Vanderbilt and one by Joby Harold. Harold’s film eventually would be chosen as the next installment in the franchise, and once he had given his final touches on the script at the end of the summer, the studio began taking director pitches on the next film.
After meeting with several top execs including Paramount Motion Picture President Emma Watts, the studio saw Caple as the best fit for the franchise that the studio chose to revamp at the top of the year.”

The main article can be seen here (https://deadline.com/2020/11/transformers-director-steven-caple-jr-1234613830/).

To be honest, I'm a little dismayed that the Deadline article is describing a "reinvented universe". I was hoping for a Transformers 6 that would pick up where The Last Knight left off, as that movie was clearly leading into more with Unicron and Quintessa. I also didn't care much for Bumblebee.

Caple is a bit like Michael Bay, in that he has very little Movie experience, but has had one big movie under his belt, with "Creed 2" (the most recent in the Rocky franchise).

Don't you mean Travis Knight? Michael Bay directed his first movie in 1994 and has released one every 2-3 years since.

Although I would have been happy with either a Bumblebee 2 or Beast Wars movie, I'm kinda glad BW lost based on the unrealistic fan predictions I've been seeing online about what a BW movie would be like. It was never going to be a remake of the '90s series.

Thank goodness for that!

If they did go ahead with the BW movie, they would've used the ROTF fembot (played by lovely Isabel Lucas) as a reference point for the animal transformations.

Travis Knight is indeed a better comparison (which I have edited into my posting above)... but I was thinking back to 2005 when Michael Bay was first announced, that he didn't have much of a resume at that point, but had a pretty good strike rate (box office takings) on the 4 or 5 movies that he had done by then.

Looking forward to more Bumblebee goodness! I would wonder how a Beast Wars movie would work. Would it be completely animated?
Could the story even work with humans involved if were set in a modern era? I think it'd be extremely hard to pull off. I'd be fine with a completely animated version not featuring any humans though.

I'm glad that never happened then. Alice's design as a Transformer was terrible, similar in the same way that I'm not a fan of most of the TF designs from AOE and TLK... a distinct lack of alt mode kibble in robot mode. Alice basically just flipped herself inside out when transforming to robot mode, whereas a Transformer to me should have distinct kibble on their bodies. With vehicular Transformers it's obviously stuff like doors, windows, wheels etc. With Beast Wars TFs we see animal parts on different parts of their bodies, but this is something distinctly missing on Alice. Thanks, I hate it.

Alice is barely a Transformer, and I doubt they really intended for her to be a fully blown one when the movie was made. Someone probably had an idea for a super sexy girl to turn out to be a killer alien robot as a story beat in the film and ran with it. Everyone points to it as a Pretender nod, but honestly I think we are just using our Transformers fan hats a little too much, they probably had no intent or even knowledge of the concept. The alt modes (and their corresponding kibble) that we do see in these films anyway are purely for marketing/placement purposes anyway, they have no reason to with a human.

Probably the same way all those random alien ships and stuff in DOTM are just generic alien things.

200 million budget, filming in Canada. (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/03/23/transformers-7-receives-a-200-million-budget-filming-in-canada-confirmed-430304)

Part of me wants to see a continuation of TLK, just because I'm curious where Bay was going with the Unicron horns.

Then again, knowing how he handles continuity the next film would probably not make any reference to that at all.

Different reports say different things... so I'm still not even sure which story universe this 7th movie is following.

The huge budget is a big risk, which is going to blow out to $300-400 million after Paramount & Hasbro spend on global marketing.
Once the fad of live action robots on the big screen wore off after the first 3, it was Michael Bay and his explosions and filming style that got bums in seats in the last couple of his TFs movies.
Just look at the Bumblebee Movie - it was still a Transformers live action movie with robots and action to the same level as the 2007 movie, and yet it failed to draw in as many people or dollars, because the concept was old and it wasn't a switch-off-the-brain Bay-verse action movie.

Even if everything was back to normal from covid by mid-22, I just don't know how they can interest enough movie goers into seeing another Transformers movie that is somehow more exciting and different to the previous 6, to generate over $600 million at the box office (not all of the ticket price goes to the movie producer, as the theatre keeps a little to pay for its costs... but the excessive price of movie tickets these days is to cover the massive cost of screening these movies).

According to a French website, the 7th Movie is likely to be set in 1992 (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/06/13/transformers-7-plot-to-take-place-in-1992-435411), which is 5 years after the Bumblebee movie (if it is following that movie).
(not sure where the 1992 image/logo is from, or if it is from anything official, as it looks like something promoting that 90s tv show Friends)

Also, to support the suspected theme of being set in the 1990s, a call has been put out for cars from that decade (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/06/15/transformers-7-requesting-for-vehicle-extras-in-montreal-435539).

Take this with a grain of salt, as it is commentary from a fan, who isn't working on the movie, but claims to have been where they are filming in Canada (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/06/20/transformers-7-set-report-beasts-g1-optimus-prime-and-bumblebee-435781)...

For one, Optimus Prime, will indeed be a G1-inspired truck, while Bumblebee will also be present as an undisclosed yellow vehicle.
Other robotic cast members however are particularly interesting. In Protoman’s own words: “There are other characters I saw but they are all NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) and we cannot talk about them right now. But they are Beast-related.” He ended by reiterating with “There are Beasts in the movie, and you will be happy.”

Meanwhile, a cloaked vehicle that looks like it could be Optimus was also spotted (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/06/18/transformers-7-optimus-prime-spotted-during-transportation-435709).

The "you will be happy" comment doesn't inspire me, as we have seen what Movie Universe beasts look like, so just because a live action movie might have Beast Wars characters, don't expect them to look anything like they did in the 1990s... just like the "Gen1" characters in the live action movies often looking very uniquely different to anything from Gen1 or Generations, mostly looking more organic than robotic.
If any Beast Wars characters do get introduced, I expect them to be more extreme versions of their Beast Machines forms, as their Beast Wars forms would look too "plain" and boring for the Movie studios when shown concept art options.

If this movie is still part of the bayverse, Jazz was already featured in the first movie, and was a Pontiac... this one might well be set 10.years before that 2007 movie, but the Bumblebee movie mostly avoided using characters on earth that weren't supposed to be there yet.

A couple of news postings on tfw show us images of the vehicles being brought in to take these promo shots (and maybe some actual filming), giving us more details of the new vehicles (characters)...

Optimus and the towtruck being brought in on the back of trucks (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/10/05/transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-optimus-prime-truck-spotted-in-cusco-442274).

A Nissan Skyline (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/10/06/transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-nightbird-spotted-for-the-first-time-442350), which is being claimed to be Nightbird... which I wonder how much of a homage it will be to the Gen1 cartoon character. (beware - significant spoilers at the link, if those details are true)

(It really makes a difference with these new movies not having an almost exclusive contract with General Motors, to give a completely different feel to the group of vehicles.)

Meanwhile, Michael Bay has popped up to remind us all (https://news.tfw2005.com/2021/10/03/transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-michael-bay-in-machu-picchu-rumor-about-a-possible-stone-wall-autobot-442174) that he is still attached to this new Transformers movie, as a Producer.

Apparently Paramount have tweeted out (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/02/15/transformers-rise-of-the-beast-announced-as-the-first-movie-of-a-new-trilogy-450197) that the RotB film will be the first in a new trilogy... but doesn't specifically mention if it is a new trilogy, or just a trilogy in the same universe (like Star Was films having 3 trilogies of films).
It also notes the newly announced cartoon show (Earth Spark) and that the other CG animated movie that we have heard about is aimed for release in 2024.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will be released theatrically in 2023 and is the first of three new installments. A new animated series from @Nickelodeon arrives this fall. And in 2024, the franchise expands further with a CG animated Transformers theatrical film.

From a recent investor event (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/03/27/tfw2005-coverage-of-hasbros-ignite-2022-event-452596), some snippets about the new movie, and another official logo banner (watermarked).

Hasbro held their first-ever Ignite event (a.k.a Innovation Showcase 2022) for retailers and investors to highlight what’s upcoming for years 2022 and 2023.
Among the highlights was the Transformers franchise. Speaking to the audience, Jenny Whitlock, Vice President – Global Franchise Strategy & Management, stated that plans are underway for Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts and included a slide with the movie title against an Aztec (?) backdrop featuring Beast characters as well as Optimus Prime.

“We’re partnering with eOne, Paramount, and a visionary new director to bring to life a Transformers story like you’ve never seen. The film will pick up after the events of 2018’s Bumblebee and follows Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and an unlikely team of humans who are joined by a group of powerful new allies; the Transformers Beasts. The introduction of beast characters will be a significant moment for all. From kids to core fans, and especially those who grew up with Beast Wars in the 90s. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts raises the stakes and set us up for what’s to come over the next few years in our film franchise.”
The film is touted as Hasbro’s biggest theatrical event to date.

This is an interesting one from a Russian site that was apparently showing licensed merchandise, including an item for the delayed Transformers Rise of the Beasts movie.
It is said to be a folder (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/04/12/first-look-at-transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-optimus-prime-cgi-render-453559) that has Movie Optimus on the front, and a Mayan/Incan looking image on the back that has 10 beasts in a circle - beasts that almost exactly match the first 10 characters in the Beast Wars cartoon (all ten except Waspinator, who is replaced by a bird which could be Airrazor).
In my mind it seems a little too coincidental to the Beast Wars cast, and I'd be surprised if the ROTB movie was using the Beast Wars cast almost exactly.
(then again, the image is too well done to be fake... but I can't rule that out)

At an event in America called CinemaCon, apparently there was a HUGE 12 seconds of footage shown from the Rise of the Beasts movie, and from various people on social media commenting on what they saw, we have the following details (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/04/29/footage-from-transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-shown-at-cinemacon-2022-454998)...

No dialogue.
It started with a shot of Optimus Prime turning around
Optimus, Bumblebee, and Arcee were shown.
Arcee was seen in her robot mode hanging off the side of a vehicle with a giant gun.
Arcee looks reminiscent of classic G1 Arcee (viewers opinion).
Optimus Prime looked very similar to what we saw in the Bumblebee Movie.
Anthony Ramos was shown weaving in and out of cars, and driving next to Arcee.
Unfortunately, no beasts were shown.

Not about the Movie itself, but a new species of lizard found in Peru has been named after Optimus Prime (https://www.dw.com/en/peru-researchers-discover-two-new-species-of-lizard/a-61967479?maca=en-rss-en-world-4025-rdf) in honour of the filming of the next movie in that country last year.

Open rectum?
'Procto' (πρωκτός) is Greek for anus, and is where English gets words like proctology and proctologist from.
PORVS is Latin for passageway, and comes from the Greek 'poros' (πόρος); and this is where English gets the words pore and porous from.
OPTIMVS is Latin for the greatest or best.

So Proctoporus optimus seems to translate as, "the best anal passage."

Again, I'm not trying to be funny here. Is there another meaning that I've completely overlooked?!?

Anyway, back on topic. I think it's really cool they named a lizard after a Transformer. I'd love to have one as a pet but I'm guessing there's no way I'd be allowed to bring one over here.

Did anyone else find it strange that nothing was featured for Rise of the Beasts at SDCC this year?
It's the one event each year that every movie studio and tv producer uses to pimp out their future projects... sometimes projects that are several years away... and yet there was no movie panel to introduce the cast or show off movie footage (which should be close to finishing, as the movie was meant to be out two months ago, and the people working on it would only have a set fee, so they wouldn't be spending too much extra time working on it for free).

It doesn't bode well for the success of the next Transformers movie to not have even a teaser trailer released at SDCC... considering that they have had enough time to have a full 2-3 minute trailer done up by now, or screened several scenes to just the SDCC attendees.
This is where massive promotional budgets come into play, sometimes costing as much as the movie itself... and where was Paramount?

I don't think it was ever announced what role he is playing in the next movie, but Tobe Nwigwe has just announced that he has been called up to do some reshoots (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/10/23/tobe-nwigw-to-shot-more-scenes-for-transformers-rise-of-the-beasts-468726) (which should mean that he is a human character, not a voice character).

I know that they gave themselves an extra 12 months on this movie, but that was more to do with stalling for a more global post-covid time that would earn the movie more money globally, not to give them more time to work on the movie. They were given enough time to have it completed for a June 2022 release, so for them to still be tinkering with it 4 months after that, every extra day working on it adds to the overall cost of the project, making it less profitable no matter how much it ends up making.
It also doesn't inspire confidence in the plot or visual effects if the director and/or producers are still not happy with the finished product, after working on the post-production for 12 months now (original filming ended October last year (https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Transformers:_Rise_of_the_Beasts)).

The cover of a book for the ROTB movie has artwork for one of the Decepticons (Scourge) we know about, but could be a spoiler for anyone who is actually able to avoid seeing robot modes for the next five months...

I haven't found an official source of this yet, but it is being claimed by websites that the release date of the ROTB movie in Australia and New Zealand has been pushed back 2 weeks to June 22nd.

If this is actually true, it isn't known yet if that means we are the only ones who have a delayed release (other than Japan, who has to wait until August for their release).

I would be guessing that ROTB is already available on Paramount+ for streaming, as it is already available to rent on Amazon Prime, and probably elsewhere as well.

JBHifi released the physical versions yesterday, while Amazon Australia releases theirs tomorrow.
