View Full Version : JP GEN Selects Volcanicus set for 2021

TakaraTomy have tweeted out a teaser silhouette, telling us that a new reveal is coming soon.
The image looks like the POTP Volcanicus (https://news.tfw2005.com/2020/09/01/generations-selects-next-figure-teaser-418637), but has different kibble on the shoulders and at the back... so it could be the rumoured remould of the POTP Dinobots to homage the Dinoking combiner.
http://www.toycollectors.com.au/news/2020/090201.jpg
The writing on the image apparently says something like "Beast Warrior Returns"... which is just as vague as the image.
If this is another Japanese remoulded combiner team (after two sets of really expensive Seacons), it could end up being a collectors import by Hasbro, and be just as expensive.

Exclusives fatigue is a real thing. Slow down!? Or just reveal everything!? I don't know what's better?
I think they'd do a six member team, one voyager torso, and five that become limbs or guns, in the Piranacon style. Why do just five?
And there nothing's to stop them from doing Monstructor too. Why stop at 6 exclusives when you could have 12 with just some paint apps and different colour plastics.

Please tell me this is coming in 2021. I'm a little overwhelmed by how many there are between now and December, and I haven't even ordered my Quint set yet.

I bet this will b a slow show of characters. They didn't drop all the Seacons at the same time, they did drop a set of the OTHER seacons though. I reckon we'll get waves like with the G1 Seacons and I also think it won't be released for a while (judging by the timing on the last batch.)
My Question is (as always) When will they release the awesome Armada Convoy they had?

So it's a cartoon accurate repaint. Given the upcoming 86 movie SS figures I'm not sure that I should invest in repaints of of the POTP toys.

It looks like the colours are overall more vibrant and matched more closely to the cartoon rather than the toys.
And there are a couple of extra weapons to fill out the chest and interact with new feet. It also looks to reuse the fists developed for the Seacons.

It's basically another Unite Warriors box set but without the nice box (one assumes)!

Or perhaps the 86 Movie Studio Series figures will just be these figures, it's just that Hasbro isn't selling them as a box set?

Wow they look absolutely fantastic. I'm guessing this is what Takara had lined up from the beginning, before Hasbro put a stop to their separate releases at the start of PotP. I am however wary with the release of this, as Studio Series may be just around the corner. I'll wait for a look at those (or at least one of them), I don't think this is going to be flying off the shelves anyway.

I?d be more concerned about it not being released here. That?s an expensive set, and unless Zing/EBGames ponies up, I can?t see it being released at retail.

7th September 2020, 04:49 PM
I don't understand the price... almost AU$300 for five toys that were originally about AU$150 at retail here, and there is no resculpting or remoulding to justify the doubling of price (like we saw with the limited release Seacons, which justified their prices).
The original release of the five individual Dinobots in Japan in 2018 (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=579138&postcount=7) was 15,500yen (which is still high at about AU$200)... but to add another $100 to the price for nothing new, just doesn't make much sense to me.
Since Volcanicus (a Dinobot combiner) isn't something during the original 80s series (comic or cartoon), it doesn't even interest me to want to have a second set just to have the combined mode.
This is an easy pass for me.
Now if TakaraTomy were to do Predaking and Abominus in a slightly different (anime) deco, I'd be keen to jump on those, because I'd love to have the combined forms to display with the other 80s combiners from Combiner Wars that TT released.

Maybe they adjusted to siege pricing? Siege deluxes are now 3500 and voyager is 5500, bringing him closer to 19500 for the set. But it hasn't been that long. Cheeky buggers
Are the feet ripped from the Seacons as well?
nalops
7th September 2020, 07:08 PM
Nah, Seacon feet were quite a bit different. Toes are more pointy and no toe spikes on top. They definitely took the design from the current Volcanicus feet and upgraded it. Notably you only get one pair of hands

Everything's going anime "plus" version now. I love the anime colours but feel like I'm getting suckered in - buy the G1 toy version then buy the G1 anime version for much more as a surprise release . At least this time you get Grimlock's double barrelled gun and don't have to look under every damn rock for Sludge and Snarl. Still, too pricey for me. I see what you're doing Takara Tomy...

They look so rad, I wish we had gotten them from the start in Unite Warriors before Hasbro reaching in and stopped them. As lovestruck as I am, I shall wait patiently to see what the Studio Series versions look like (hopefully cartoon accurate too).
Maybe Snarl could’ve got a dino head retool from the really narrow G1 toy head to something more flat wedge-shaped, a bit part of his look in my opinion.

Reading the comic a second time, it basically then also places all the toys post PotP, including Siege and Earthrise in the 2050 future that they have set up.
Prime is in his Earthrise form, Megatron looks to be Earthrise too, and then there are plenty of Siege and Earthrise cameos in the background, including PotP Jazz.

I'm just not feeling the minor redecos enough to spend a significant amount of money for these.
I don't know what they were thinking, charging so much more for such insignificant redecos of toys that they just had released in Japan 2 years ago.

I feel exactly the same. Sure they look nicer, but I already forked out for most of them during POTP. They don't look good enough for me to want to buy them again. And it'll be easier and cheaper for me to do so than many other people.
Plus the biggest flaw I think is wide Grimlock, who is still wide in Dino mode.

This set really should have come out when the mould were new. I would not have bought the PotP versions had Takara put out their own release for Unite Warriors at the time. I absolutely love the decos, but it’s a little too late, especially with new voyager ones coming potentially very soon anyway.

It may be even worse than that. Robot kingdom has it prices for US $159, so even if you double it with the exchange rate it should come out around 318. $400 would be extravagant. I don?t know what price they were offered the set, but it really seems overly expensive. I get that its a TakaraTomyMall exclusive, but still.

If OMP with a single retail outlet can get them in for $210 + post & still turn a profit, & EBGames/Zing with multiple stores across Australia charges $499, there is something seriously wrong with this equation.
I could buy 20 myself, put a $100 margin on top and still come out $150 cheaper each than EB.

Agreed. It also hurts the Transformers brand as well, as many people think $500 is the actual price for the set full stop and won't go looking anywhere else.

Besides the usual EB markup, I do think a lot of products like this at retailers like EB are very much preying upon people who recognise Transformers from their childhood but have no in depth grasp on general prices or products. Its status as a collector item as well will probably convince a disproportionate amount of people, given that many collectables in such stores are in a similar price range for genres with a lot of overlap such as superhero prop replicas, lightsabers, statues and figurines, etc.
I think the logic is quite similar for the pretty needlessly expensive reissues. Most who recognise them at a glance as toys from their childhood have no idea what price range to look for.
griffin

The pricing still makes no sense because we've seen how cheap items can be at eb, based on what hasbro sells them at.
Sometimes I think that someone at hasbro Asia gets the currency converter wrong from time to time.
