Looks like the rumours were true... an official collaboration between Lego and Transformers is coming, starting with Optimus Prime.
The teaser video on the Transformers facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/transformers/videos/424660129501578/) only mentions that it is coming out June 2022 (which is not a long time away, as they could have been hyping this months ago... considering how much in advance various toys and licensed merchandise have their preorders).

No other details officially released yet, however, these product details are from a European source that is said to be very reliable (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/05/09/rumor-new-details-on-upcoming-lego-optimus-prime-g1-design-reveal-imminent-455617), as they were the ones to reveal the existence of this item a few months back....

LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime: More details, reveal coming soon

When our first article about the upcoming LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime set went online in February, the LEGO community was upside down for some time. The news was picked up by many other sites and since then we have received almost daily requests to reveal more information about the set.
In fact, today I have a few more details about the set for you, but first and foremost I want to emphasize again that the set is indeed real and is created in official cooperation with Hasbro. The unveiling of the Transformer could probably already take place in the next few days, with a release of the LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime I expect on 01 June 2022, maybe even once again a VIP pre-sale will take place a few days before.
Perhaps the most pressing question that moved many of you was what form of Optimus Prime it will be. Is the model based on the Michael Bay movies? And if so, there are differences in the look of the leader of the Autobots. Should it perhaps even be the G1 version, with which so many grew up in the 80s and which they therefore wish?
LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime will be G1 model
In the first article about Optimus Prime, I speculated that it could probably be a version inspired by the upcoming movie Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, since it should have been released in a few weeks if it hadn’t been postponed. Apparently LEGO knows its customers pretty well, though, because in fact the Optimus Prime set won’t be based on any of the Bay movies, but will be the frequently requested G1 look.

Set number: 10302
Set name: Optimus Prime
Pieces: 1508
Release Date: June 2022
RRP: 169,99 Euro

The LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime thus corresponds to the typical shape of a cab-over truck. You can choose whether you want to display Optimus Prime in his robot or truck form. But the good thing is that you can change your mind as often as you want. Unlike many LEGO sets, you are not forced to disassemble your A-model and assemble it in a different way to the B-model. Just like the real model from the series and movies, the transformation is supposed to work without rebuilding!

You can imagine the transformation process kind of similar to this video. The truck base forms the legs, the head is folded up from the cab, and the arms are formed from the sides of the cab. Unfortunately, LEGO Optimus doesn’t have movable knee joints, but the legs can be set about shoulder-width apart and the lower legs can be rotated. The arms, on the other hand, are fully movable. In robot mode, Optimus reaches a height of about 35 cm or 13.5 inches.
Admittedly, this is all kept quite simple, but a great play feature, as you would expect from a Transformer, and nothing compared to having to spend hours tinkering to get the respective other model of LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime.

In addition, there are also some accessories that come with the set. On the one hand, there is Optimus‘ ion blaster and Energon axe. There will also be the Matrix of Leadership, an Energon cube and a red jetpack, as well as a small badge on which you can stick a sticker with the following information:
Optimus Prime
Function: Commander
Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.
Strength: 10
Rank: 10
Intelligence: 10
Courage: 10
Speed: 6
Firepower: 8
Endurance: 10
Skill: 10

This is normal for Lego. They generally announce their Direct to Consumer sets (i.e. sets that are typically exclusive to Lego.com and their retail stores) in the calendar month before release. I re-discovered Lego before I re-discovered Transformers and was surprised just how long the lead times are for TFs! :)

A review or two showed up at around midnight last night, but were quickly taken down, probably because they jumped the gun (they must have thought that they were allowed to release their reviews after the teaser video was released).

Some people were quick enough to copy the images or make screenshots of the video, and you can see quite a few of them over on Seibertron (https://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/more-images-and-video-review-of-the-transformers-optimus-prime-lego-set-10302/46889/).

Is this the first time Hasbro has allowed a third party to make a transforming toy out of the Transformers IP? (excluding that auto-transforming robot)

griffin
12th May 2022, 04:08 PM
Other licensed converting toys I can think of are some of the various happy meal toys, the gen1 electric race car set (the cars only flipped up to be Bot mode), the Bumblebee movie Ravage that came with the Soundwave action figure by 3zero (I think it was them), the Robosen Optimus, and the Jada remote control Optimus from this year.
I dont think they completely forbid it, as I think it is just preferable that licensees do not produce converting toys that are good enough to rival Hasbro's own toys.

Man I want this so bad. It looks sick and it covers both my main hobbies.

The only issue I have is do I record it in my Brickset (https://brickset.com/) account or my itfdb (https://itfdb.com/) account?
Or do I double up and put it in both?

Also, do you think Hasbro will pressure Lego to re-release it again in Black and then again again in White.

It looks really good, but as someone that isn't a Lego person I always kind of get sticker shock when I actually look at the prices when things that intersect with my other interests come along

Like, he looks great, but I'm mostly just thinking about what actual Transformers I could buy with that money lol. And yeah, I don't get the fun of putting those together, but I'd probably just buy some cheap Gundam models if I wanted that

I get the licensing factors into the price, but this is simply too expensive in my opinion. If lepin or similar do a ko set I'll consider it, but for now my moc Optimus suits me just fine.

My only involvement with Lego is "Lego Masters".

Based on that, I'm scouring these images to see if there are any unique parts that "Brickman" can say, "oh, you've used the **** from Optimus Prime. That's great part usage". Doesn't seem to be any, however some Lego savvy enthusiasts might see otherwise.

I'll grab a couple. One for me sealed, and one for a mates kid who loves Lego and Transformers.

If there are no unique parts created for this set, it makes it a very expensive set per piece, at 17cents per piece (for plastic that would have cost less than a cent per piece to make).

If anyone is feeling put off by the price. Aside from the obvious factors being that it's 1. Lego and 2. licensed from Hasbro, it also is quite tall in robot mode, being larger than MP-1.

I wouldn't worry too much. Even if it does sell out in the first wave, Lego normally produces these sorts of sets for a couple of years. And most of the major retailers here will probably pick it up.

I'm not a fan of it (Id much rather buy the McLaren F1) but while watching a review, I found out that apparently the dude that designed it used to work for Hasbro. I thought that was cool.

It certainly looks like Prime, and both modes are quite clean. That said, the price is beyond ridiculous, especially considering there are no minifigs and the details are all stickered instead of printed parts. I think a set like this was inevitably going to be disappointing to a lot of TF fans, as we have several decades of engineering innovation that we are well-acquainted with. The transformation for this seems to resemble MP-1, which is a nice and respected figure but vastly behind the modern state of Transformers. As much as Lego bricks can be a hindrance to complexity, they can also add a lot of options for clever conversion tricks, which we don't really see here.

Either a better model, some desirable minifigures (as Disney and the like have done for big one off sets) or just a more affordable price would have served this set well. I can see fans of Lego and TFs buying it, but not many very enthusiastically. Hopefully it means a Megatron or Bumblebee at some point, although a gun mode is certainly out of the question and the Beetle is a nigh unobtainable license for a teamup with already two brands. They are quite different markets, but I'd have much more liked to see a TF set along the lines of the (admittedly expensive) Sesame Street one from a few years ago.

Could you just wait for the instructions to be released and then buy the parts to build it yourself if there are no unique parts?

Ignoring that several parts are printed and you'll have to substitute blank versions; technically possible but would be much more expensive and time intensive than just buying the set. First off, it's quite unlikely you'll be getting everything from just one or two stores on bricklink, and local ones at that, so one of your major cash sinks will be shipping for each lot of bricks. After that there's any uncommon pieces which may go for $0.25-0.50 each and may require buying from several different sellers due to low stock, I think some of the transparent orange pieces would be a good example. Then there's the time spent finding all the pieces, balancing buying enough from each store to meet their minimum(or maximum if you find some really exacting stores) order quantities while not overpaying on shipping, doing all that for MOC is one thing but to make a DIY KO of an official set is just silly. If you really have to save a buck then it's either the inevitable KO(which may not be exact depending on how they substitute parts they don't have moulds for or colours they use) or a sale if retailer stocks it(and doesn't exempt it from promotions like Myer loves to do).

Oh yeah, I know he's a big boi, it's just that I look at that price tag and I'm like "I can get everything I want from Legacy wave 1 for less than that", or like "if I wanted to get extravagant with a Transformer I could grab MPG Shouki with money to spare" so Lego Optimus comes up short comparatively

The official press release from last week (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/05/12/lego-optimus-prime-10302-officially-revealed-455898#images)...

The LEGO Group and TRANSFORMERS:
ENGAGE BRICK MODE
The LEGO Group and Hasbro unite to reveal the new, fully converting LEGO® Transformers Optimus Prime

The collaboration marks the first time these leading global toy companies have worked together
Featuring both Robot and alt modes, this is one of the few LEGO sets that converts between two different models
The massive set includes over 1,500 LEGO pieces and stands over 35cm in Robot mode and 15cm high in alt mode

Billund, Denmark May 12th: Leading global toy companies, the LEGO Group and Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) unite for the first time to bring the iconic Transformers Autobot, Optimus Prime, to life in LEGO® form – complete with alt mode. The new LEGO Transformers Optimus Prime set is a tribute to the heroic Autobot leader with over 1,500 detailed LEGO pieces. Once assembled, the figure features 19 points of articulation that allow fans to convert from robot to truck alt mode and back again. This is one of the first times a LEGO set has been able to convert between two models, without the need to rebuild.
The new LEGO set will transport fans back to 1984 to when Transformers first exploded into popular culture with the original toy line and animated TV series. Modeled after the G1 Optimus Prime character, the new LEGO set includes remarkable attention to detail and features such as the ion blaster, Energon axe, an Energon Cube and the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which can be stored in the chest chamber.
Senior Designer at the LEGO Group, Joseph Patrick Kyde, says about the collaboration: “It has been an honour and joy to work together with Hasbro to develop a LEGO version of Optimus Prime! I am excited to see these two toy companies come together for the first time to celebrate the leader of the Autobots. Optimus Prime has become a pop culture symbol of courage, selflessness, and great leadership as well as an awesome toy that embodies the problem-solving and creativity skills that both companies value so much. It’s been a wonderful and challenging task to bring him to life using LEGO bricks, especially making sure that he can shift modes without disassembly and stay true to his signature look and style.”
Casey Collins, Head of Licensed Consumer Products and Business Development at Hasbro noted: “We’re excited to bring two of the world’s greatest play and entertainment companies together to celebrate this larger-than-life, iconic character – Optimus Prime. We know fans everywhere will be thrilled by this collaboration as it enables fans and families of all ages to create memories as they work together to build the LEGO Transformers Optimus Prime.”
Once complete building this 1,508-piece model, fans can admire their build with pride by adding the display plaque to pay tribute to the iconic Transformers character.
The LEGO Transformers Optimus Prime set will be available globally from LEGO.com/optimus and in LEGO stores from June 1st priced at 169,99 USD/EUR.

I imagine that the people developing this set tried it with and without knee joints, and maybe worked out that it wasn't able to transform into the truck mode (without any rebuilding) and stay stable in the vehicle mode, if it had knee joints.

Lego are only in the last 18 months or so starting to experiment with knee joints in their Ninjago mechs. Previously there weren’t pieces strong enough for purpose and even now that are coming up with some really cool ideas but they are far from super solid. Same as Voltron I assume they imagine this as more a display piece and less a play toy so didn’t want to compromise the stability.

I can’t wait for the day they design a significantly stronger ratchet joint. There is a piece now that can do the job, but it’s size would break the lines and not look that great.

The Lego Optimus is supposed to be released tomorrow... in a little more than an hour's time.

It might already be known or mentioned somewhere, but according to someone at Myer, the Lego Optimus will be exclusive to the Lego site for its release, and it isn't known how long it will be after that that it is then released to retailers.

Lego.com allows 2 per household while the Certified Store website allows 1 per household.

I ordered mine at 5am on 1 June, and it only shipped out last night (regular postage speed) - so it doesn't seem like there is rhyme or reason to the order fulfilment. The more simplified/cartoony look due to the eyes being printed on a flat piece has only added to the overall charm of the toy.

Funnily enough I was just thinking this morning that I'd swap out the printed eyes for clear stud pieces, as that's more in line with the Lego "Transformers" I'd make as a kid. But hey, that's the beauty of Lego, you can make it how you want it. :)

Mine is still showing as "in warehouse", so I wonder if my order on the 2nd was probably a glitch, and they just can't find any stock to fulfil my order.

Mine was the same but yesterday it changed to "sorted to chute."

Was just shipped today at about 4pm... I wonder if it will show up the next day like it did for Kyle, who is twice the distance from Melbourne than me.

Took a little while, but it was delivered today. The box is a lot bigger than I was expecting, despite all those pics online, the scale of the box itself didn't appear obvious.

The box reminds me of the MP-1 box. It's nice that they look similar.

Ordered mine 1st June and 15 days later, it’s still ‘in warehouse’. Customer service are no help either. No idea why it’s taking so long but pretty poor effort.

And I just noticed one thing today. It seems we've been distributed a slightly better version of the packaging here in Australia. The boxes I've seen here have the box flaps sealed by tape, while the boxes seen on most of the YouTube reviews had the box flaps sealed by glue and it would be almost impossible not to damage the box when opening.

An official affiliate online store for Lego in the UK has offered some limited edition display cases for the Lego Optimus figure.
One had 250 units and featured a reflective grid pattern, while one had 750 units and had a lenticular background image from the 1986 Movie.

The lenticular one is still available (about 400 left), while the reflective one is sold out (https://news.tfw2005.com/2022/07/09/lego-optimus-prime-limited-edition-display-cases-460235).

They are about au$160, and ship to Australia. (https://www.wickedbrick.com/products/limited-edition-display-case-for-lego-optimus-prime-10302)
(they do NOT come with the Lego Optimus - you still have to buy that separately)

I might need some Lego fans to back me up on this, but I've seen Target, Kmart and Big W all list the higher-end collector-targeted Lego sets like this on their websites but never actually have them in store.

(Seen this with Star Wars and Batman'89 sets but likely others too?)

Anyway I ordered this from Big W this morning and it's been shipped (free) already, due Tuesday.

And yes, the more expensive and exclusive lego sets are usually sold online only.

Also, I think the RRP is going to go up to $289 with the August price rises, so get one now at the lower price if you can (although usual Lego 20% off will make it ~$231).

As another option, ToysRUs (https://www.toysrus.com.au/lego-10302-optimus-prime.html) have it for $259.99 with $7.95 shipping. TRU packaging is not great (they put one 8" Sealed Air pillow inside and the cartons can be oversized, allowing for item movement, which might damage heavier items) and the price is nothing special, so only buy if it goes on sale. However, from time to time their toys/Lego get impressively discounted and be the cheapest anywhere.

And I dont want to give up on it as I have permission from the Minister of Home Affairs/Finance to purchase

For the most part yes, but you do occasionally see one on a shelf.

As christalcase predicted above, RRP went up to $279.99 on Aug 1st (Lego and ToysRUs went to $279.99). Kmart is selling currently at $225 with free shipping, which I bought. It said $225 on a search page but $249 on the item page, which then changed to $225 when I entered my postcode.

Other options are appearing at other toy/Lego retailers now e.g. Toyworld (https://www.toyworld.com.au/products/lego-10302-icons-optimus-prime) $279.99, Bricks to the World (https://bttw.com.au/Lego-Optimus-Prime-10302) $279.95, Amazon AU (https://www.amazon.com.au/LEGO-10302-Optimus-Prime/dp/B09QFX7G1B/) $276.58, so it doesn't seem hard to find.

As noted already, the TRU price is now $279.99... but they have an "introductory price" of just $279.00... a saving of 99cents.
