On display at the Sydney Oz Comic Con last week was a Silver coin by the New Zealand Mint, with a release date of October 1st... and now it is on their website for sale (https://www.nzmint.com/products/transformers-optimus-prime-1oz-silver-coin).

It is a 1 ounce coin of pure silver, with a face value of just NZ$2, but it's sale value based on the amount of silver in it, is noted as us$99. It also lists several other currencies, which changes based on the exchange rate of the US Dollar... so at the moment, it is about au$158.
The site says the price includes shipping worldwide, just not to PO Boxes, as a signature is required.
There are 3,000 produced, with a 4cm diameter, and comes in a really nice Gen1 themed box. (there is a sticker of authenticity on the back - the sample in Sydney didn't have one on it)
The coin itself will be one of the last to be minted with Queen Elizabeth on the back.

Heroic and noble leader Optimus Prime has transformed into a 1oz pure silver coin! This is the first release in our awesome new coin series featuring all of your favourite classic Transformers characters!
This round pure silver coin features Optimus Prime in full colour, as seen in the 1984 series The Transformers. The Transformers logo and the year 1984 have been engraved and frosted, and a mirror-finish background makes the silver shine. To confirm the coin as legal tender, the obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth ll.
Officially licensed, this prime piece is held inside an acrylic capsule, to ensure easy transporting of your coin while protecting it from The Decepticons! It is then nestled in black velvet inside a high-quality box, that features The Transformers-themed imagery. Printed on the back is a Certificate of Authenticity and the coin’s unique number in the limited mintage of 3,000.

Just note that the first paragraph of their product description says that Optimus is just the first of a series of Transformers characters. It doesn't say how many are being done, but their "coming soon (https://www.nzmint.com/pages/coming-soon)" page has Bumblebee listed for release on October 28th, so maybe one each month. (and my guess would be Megatron and maybe Starscream as well)

that is gorgeous! i would never have considered collecting a silver coin before, now i'm imagining it in my hands...
is there any specific reason why they are doing this? seems weirdly random.

It’s a legal tender $2 coin sold for $156.51, do the math lol 😝 !

They also have Star Wars with Grogu coins too. I think they’re just leveraging high popularity IP and merchandising it.
Still very cool though.

It looks like there could just be four coins, as there are no other Transformers coins listed on their January releases.

It looks like the first four coins might now be all sold out, as none of them appear to be listed anymore.
SEP - Optimus Prime
OCT - Bumblebee
NOV - Megatron
DEC - Grimlock

They have a new one listed though, which must have just been released - Starscream
https://www.nzmint.com/products/transformers-starscream-1oz-silver-coin

People might note that the reverse side doesn't have the Queens head on it, but also doesn't have the King's head either... it just has a coat of arms from the Niue, as that's the island of issue for these coins.

On their Coming Soon page they have Soundwave listed for August 8th, so Starscream probably was released July 8th.
(the first 4 coins were released at the end of the month, while these are at the beginning of the month)

I think the NZ Mint was supposed to be releasing some ROTB movie coins as well, but they aren't on there, so if they did them, they must already be sold out.

It took me a while to find their news page, but I did find the different Transformers postings...
https://www.nzmint.com/blogs/news/tagged/transformers

The news reveal for Starscream...
https://www.nzmint.com/blogs/news/notorious-decepticon-starscream-on-new-transformers-coin

And the Rise of the Beasts coin, which sold out in less than a month, was released June 15th (the quantity was a little smaller though, at 2000 units)...
https://www.nzmint.com/blogs/news/striking-new-silver-coin-for-transformers-rise-of-the-beasts

It notes that the ROTB coin also had the Niue Coat of Arms on the back, but since it is sold out, the product page is gone, and I wasn't able to see its images.

I forgot to mention that the Soundwave coin was released last month....
https://www.nzmint.com/blogs/news/next-up-in-our-transformers-coin-series-is-soundwave

https://www.nzmint.com/products/transformers-soundwave-1oz-silver-coin

It looks like the Starscream coin is now sold out too... so these seem to be really popular.
