That's a seriously awesome costume, even if it can't transform! :D Hats off to you, Seishinkibou!

Ever tried doing TF cosplay outside of a nerd event like a convention?! I have! I went out dining with friends once wearing a Megatron costume - I copped weird/dirty stares and verbal abuse from some stoner during a bus ride... (-_-) I also took the train from the Olympic Park Sprint platform at Lidcombe to Olympic Park for Supanova in my Ratchet costume - copped abuse from some guys on the train before mine.

Ever since then I go directly to conventions by car if I'm cosplaying. (-_-)

I actually did get shoved by some random guy in my Ratchet costume at Animania once - much to his surprise I actually gave chase... and caught him! ;) He wasn't so tough after that. :p

I should add Gok I'm just trying to point out that that's how the community would react. I remember the time I wore the Optimus Prime voice changer to the movie. My mates basically disowned me for a weak and I copped a lot of laughs from the cinema staff. I rolled with them though b/c what else do you honestly expect if you come in like that? You're asking for a bagging. Especially when you're heading out for a meal on a Saturday night when people are about and already getting tipsy.

Not surprised, but just pointing out to roller that there's a reason why people don't do full cosplay in public outside of nerd events. It was a response to roller's comment "it's some kinda nerd fest" and my reply was basically to say, "well duh!" - where else can you get away with doing TF cosplay in public? (conventions do count as public events) :p

I proudly flaunt my love for TFs in public and I don't care what others think. As I've mentioned on other threads, I regularly go out in public wearing TF clothes and carrying TF toys in my hands. Henkei Lambor accompanied me yesterday when my wife and I went grocery shopping. ;)

I did wear my Optimus Prime voice changer helmet to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras earlier this year and I mostly got cheers, kudos, hugs, high fives and several people posed with me for photos. :)

I also wore it to school on Halloween - the year 10s were doing a Halloween costume thing for fund-raising for their formal. Several kids posed with me for photos. :p

And of course, there's roller... ;)

Yep, that was at Gencon in Brisbane during the start of July. (SK is a RL friend of mine) I still can't get over how awesome that costume is, so much cooler seeing it in person!

I also do cosplay but it's mostly Final Fantasy and Anime stuff, tho I can say that SK and myself are doing something TF related for SDCC next year. (Tis a secret ;) )

And now you understand why Megatron is so angry all the time. Everyone picks on him when he rides the bus. His anger at this led to him forming the Decepticons and trying to take over the universe.

Seriously, Megatron Origin should have been like that. :P

i'm doing a cosplay and i'm not a sexy dude. what should i expect? i'm just a short shit in a mesh box, do i need to make my costume in a way that i can bolt if i need to? do you recomend hard hats? where should i put most of my padding? (besides in my bra!) i've only met one cosplayer up here and that club is now dead and burried.

GOKIIIIIIIIT... i see you too like the 'one box, and feet in tissue box' effect. at least you can pee!

I'm scared to cosplay now!

Hell no. i only use paper to work out a scale. the rest is drawn directly onto the material i want to use. after if there are mistakes, i just simply 'cut n paste/touchups/customise' and build around the problem as i hit them. Materials are 'what ever works for this bit' as you may know, Prototype Sunny was mesh and yoga mat and flock, (chia pet) Sunny 2.0 is 2cm thick foam and felt with some yoga mat joins. Depthcharge is likely to havea mesh and yoga mat. each wing being 2m. 4m metalics each side. at up to $16 per metre... just the wings. i will most likely seek out pvc pipe for the arms and general craft foam for the face. i'm thinking that the fish gun shoulda been a pvc pipe... but everyone like a plushi fish gun. i'm also tossing up doing a red transformer afterwards, but i like my headmasters and old sandstorm, cyclonus and my SIM2 thundercracker. he works at the florist....

But that takes the fun out of building your own costume! Which could potentially cost you the same amount in materials and equipment :p

GoktimusPrime

I agree. But in Japan a lot of cosplayers actually hire professionally made costumes rather than making it themselves. The Cosplay culture there is quite different -- here it's more about having fun and having a go, but in Japan complete accuracy is paramount and other fans will nitpick you ruthlessly if any part of your costume is inaccurate. There'd be parts of that costume that would be nitpicked on too.

Some fan made costumes are more accurate than that -- like the G1 Optimus Prime costume that Randall Ng made for his son who wore it at BotCon (and other cons) this year. That was adorably accurate. :) (took him freakin' months to build it -- I was following its construction online and for jokingly referring to it as an Ultra Magnus costume because it was all white until he painted it in the final phase ;)).

Its sad when people take a fun hobby and turn it into a war zone. I like my cosplays to have some plan and effort put into it and get pissed at people who don't care enough about the character to even try, but i wouldn't go round going 'fracking lights are the wrong size you dumb beep beep beep'. I just hope that the Ozformers will 'Ok' my Cosplays when they see them and be happy with them.

Heres a full shot in progress. I put all the bits together so i could take a look at it and its a weird weird feeling. NOT finished, not even touched up. just what i have so far.

Cosplayers are different now. There are professional ones and not just the ones who do it for fun. If you are doing it for fun, there's no point for criticism. You are not doing it for them. :)

If you don't wear cosplay, I don't think you should criticise as well. But I think it's ok to identify some mistakes in a non-confrontational way. :D

Yukitora
24th August 2012, 06:57 PM
Its nice when someone points out something that you could improve on, when you know you've been struggling and input in general is welcomed, but when people start picking to the extreme it becomes sad. Of course i'll make my own design from input that i get. I've herd some things from anime cosplayers in general when they go to conventions, and this extreme hate from perfectionists seems to be still around. Nut-jobs! I just want to make sure i have made the best I can for the characters i'm doing and that others will feel i have done a good job in general.

Which leads me to some last little touch-up questions because my data is too varied and i'm uncertain.
1) Sunstreaker has either yellow or black front part of the shins. which is more widely appreciated?
2) When did the spolier disappear from his form, and does robot mode have one? my g1 toy has one in robot mode... any others?
3)i forgot to put doors on the legs. -.- (after i planned them in to begin with), is placing that black triangle on the side of the 'shin' sadly ok? ooh so embarrassed, forgot a vital leg part! lambo doors! awww.

Yukitora

I am stuck between making A Depthcharge Ray sleeping/beanbag or Depthcarge cosplay. The cost is the same, the frustration likely to be the same to.
I can stick my kid in Depthcharges mouth when its a beanbag, along with using it as a general rug, play thing, kite ect. With a cosplay, I can at lest get to use it before my kid grows another 30cm and can wear it too! And just dribble over the fact i made another bot for my collection! Both have same play and excitement value. I would also like to do Armada Starscream, cause its a pretty plane.

1: Personally I am more partial to the G1 toy design, so I lean towards the black shins. it also breaks up the figure a bit, giving some variation and more than just a whole lot of yellow to look at like the generations toy.
2 the other two I'm aware of (The generations toy and the Alternators toy) both have spoilers but they end up being part of the legs/hanging off his back. otherwise <shrug> I'm not sure
3. I think the black triangles are a good mid point. who's to say the rest of the door hasn't folded around the leg.

either way, it's your Cosplay design, you should pick what appeals to you the most. :D

That is totally inaccurate! It should be at least 20 feet tall with real tyres and real Lambo parts! You fail at show accuracy you dumb beep beep beep :p

Nah, it looks cool. It strongly resembles the G1 toy down to the painted details.

Bought a DotM Optimus Prime costume from Target for my daughter. The mask it came w/ was too big, so I let her wear the Transformers Prime Optimus Prime mask instead (which also looks better anyway). :) It's her first cosplay, and she enjoyed the experience. Hopefully I can get her used to wearing it a few more times and see if she's willing to wear it at outside. Might see if there's any Halloween events coming up; could be a test run before seeing if she'll wear this to a con next year. ;)
