equal parts cool effects to equal part "Twilight effects" make me hesitant about this film...

And yes by Twilight I mean that abomination that every female under 30 years of age seems to go as crazy about as if I lit their favourite pair of shoes on fire.

Yeah I saw the ad for that before, might have to set the VCR, do you know if it's starting this week, Paul? Or has it been on for a few weeks now...

EDIT: Looks like it's the 2nd part of the first episode, it's a 3 parter, shouldn't be too hard to catch up

Same as the Xmen films although it's looking like they retconned Sabretooth.

Ive got all these on VHS. About 16 or so tapes I reckon. I should sell them before word gets out about the DVD release....:o

I've heard it's in the same continuity as the X-Men movies but is like prequel or something, explaining Wolverine's origins.

SNIKT-SNIKT!!

Didn't Wolverine live in feudal Japan at one stage? I'd love to see that in the movie.

Wolverine's apparently a fully fledged Samurai although I don't know how that works. Must be similar to how Tom cruise was the last Samurai......

From what I know, he is incredibly old due the his healing ability.
He is known to have fought alongside Captain America in WWII.
He was in Japan at one point and if I remember correctly, he did train in a village for people who had been turned into human weapons. He had a wife and kid and everything.
But during his final test where he had to not defend himself from some attackers something happened, like an explosion on a near by mountain or something (I read this a long time ago) and he unsheathed his claws, failing the test.
Bucky had something to do with it I think.
Can't remember, only read it once, and I was pressed for time.

That trailer looks good anyway. I'm certainly up for it.

It's pretty good, I've seen the first dozen or so episodes, animation is reminiscent of the Spectacular Spiderman (which is on Saturdays before Tf:Animated.) Season 2 has just started airing in the US.

And of course the 90's cartoon version of Xmen had to go and be released, I just went and 'researched' it over the weekend.

I have been watching Wolverine and The X-Men and it is indeed surprisingly good. Not as good as 90s X-men because this time things such as discrimination and public violence against 'racial' groups is much more toned down due to modern sensibilities but the stories are still well written. Bob Forward from Beast Wars also wrote a few episodes.

I have seen all the episodes released so far (16). They are still in Season 1 not 2.

Slightly off-topic, but I interpreted the other guy (name has been forgotten for now) as the last Samurai, Not Tom. Thats how I managed to get through that one.

Yeahbutwha?

I don't get what you mean by that statement. I think there's still the same amount of prejudice these days against minority groups, and some groups have it worse now than ever.

Or do you mean that the writers have left it out because Americans have (until recently?) been much more xenophobic and if they included acknowledging people who are different are actually okay, viewers would have turned off?

I liked the 90s cartoon but mostly I was despairingly noticing all the places it interpreted the "real" X-Men stories wrong. Nowadays I can see it like the movies or Ultimate X-Men as a retelling. But I still cringe when people refer to the X-Men Animated Series cartoon as canon (I have over 800 comic books that say it isn't! :p ).

The new Wolverine movie should be alright and I'm glad it's a prequel to the other movies. I hope they do the Magneto prequel too.

I'm trying to collect all Uncanny up to issue #400. After that it got too commercial and turned to crap. I just really love the Chris Claremont stuff. That's the 'real' Xmen to me.

I like how it's just not Wolverine as well. Looks like they got Emma, John Wraith, Deadpool, Blob and obviously Gambit. Wonder if they'll have other Canadians in there...

I hope they do the Magneto prequel too.

That'd be pretty swell.

IMO.....

By issue #400 you're 120 issues past his depature (minus the 15 or so issues from his short return to Uncanny) :o

About time Gambit appeared, would have liked to have had him play a part in the Xmen series, but I think he would have clashed with Wolverine as the "reluctant hero" a bit too much.

And Emma is getting extremely popular of late, anything x-men I chance seeing seems to have her in a larger and more important role.

I think he means that it had the racial stereotypes in it, and it would be considered politically incorrect to show such things.
Kind of like when you watch older movies that would have gotten a higher rating by today's standards

I mean the cartoon played on the realities of discrimination against minorities groups or people who are different in human societies. That was a reoccuring and prominent theme in 90s X-men which is much more toned down this time around and less direct.

The 'racial' discrimination themes in X-men is societie's fear against mutants and in 90s X-Men you had radical groups such as 'Friends of humanity' and so forth which seriously discriminated against them and somewhat reflected similar issues that exist in all human societies.

Ah it's a shame then that this element has been downplayed in the show, as for me personally I'm an X-Fan because they are the superheroes I most relate to because of the prejudice they face.

GoktimusPrime
4th February 2009, 09:56 AM
*nods* I agree. I think the single most important theme in X-Men is its social commentary on discrimination/prejudice; and not only racism, any kind of prejudice. Sir Ian McKellan (Magneto) said that as a gay man he could relate to the prejudice theme in the X-Men films. I think one of the most powerful lines in the movies was in the first one where Magneto points out to Rogue that as a Jew who survived the Holocaust he witnessed his family being persecuted for simply being born different to those in power. I like how he specifically said "those in power" and not "the majority" as it also includes things like apartheid where a minority who happen to have political power discriminate against a majority.

But I still cringe when people refer to the X-Men Animated Series cartoon as canon (I have over 800 comic books that say it isn't! ).
I feel the same way about the G1 Transformers cartoon! :p But at the end of the day I accept that the G1 cartoon is canon too - just different from the comics. :)

Hot damn. I got this a few years back off of eBay b/c it jsut wasn't around Will get it again though. It was what got me into comics and is one of my favourite cartoons. Its got one of my favourite cartoon stories ever, the multi-part one where Apocalypse takes the Axis of Time. That was just loads of awesomeness.

I loved watching X-men before school back in the day, was awesome. I always used to watch all the credits to see the characters in 3D haha, and how awesome was the intro song.

I was going to get the episodes via... other means, but hopefully they release them all on DVD because I will definitely be buying them

I've seen the first three episodes of Wolverine and the X-Men now. In general I like it, nothing upsets this X-Fan yet. It doesn't seem to matter that I only saw a few episodes of Evolution (or if this is a direct sequel?) but it does have a clear movie influence (like the Ultimate comics). I can sort of see this as a continuation of the movie universe from X-Men 2 ignoring the offensive X-Men 3.

Emma has been added in a good way, matching her joining the core team in the Morrison comics. I like that the team is being put back together slowly as it helps the characters stand out. Using Domino on the Brotherhood team with the Scarlet Witch seems overkill -- you really don't need two characters with vague luck-based powers. But Pyro is Australian again which is good (I thought it was going to be Rusty Collins with Boom-Boom until he spoke).

I had to laugh at the first episode when they showed Wolverine riding his motorbike and wearing a helmet! Why does a mutant who can heal pretty much any wound and whose skull is covered with an unbreakable metal need to wear a helmet? Answer: censors! Of course it's fine for Wolverine to walk into a burning train wreck but he can't not wear a helmet... "think of the children!"

I like the time split, it allows for a larger variety of supporting characters.

Up to Episode 12 now, been distracted by Spectacular Spiderman which is the best animated show on the box right now.
