I might be the only one who finds himself giddy upon reading this, but I don't care! It must be shared!
Dragonball is getting a re-airing with a "refreshed" version of the show in Japan from Sunday April 5th 2009, to celebrate 20 years of Dragonball Z. More details are below and come from www.daizex.com/ (http://www.daizex.com/):
The DBZ TV series is receiving an extensive "refresh" for Japanese television airing
This is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of DBZ
While based on the original animation production, it is being updated with new technology
This includes extending the frames for formatting on an HD 16:9 display (note: not cropping the image)
The original Japanese cast is re-grouping to re-voice the show (where available, and unfortunately not including those that have passed on, such as Hirotaka Suzuoki [Tenshinhan])
Sound effects are being updated
Unlike the general show, the OPs and EDs are being completely redone
While not in the above announcement, other reports are noting that the number of episodes is being reduced from 291 to approximately 100
This begins 05 April 2009 @ 9 am
I cant wait to see how these episodes turn out, sure it isnt a new DBZ show but it'll be more than enough for me!

Most probably, but it'd be a Japanese region DVD, as I doubt Funimation would re-dub it, since they have just done so...unless they slap the new intro/outro's on the episodes.
I wonder if it means re-edited episodes (as in merging 3 into one) or if they will just do particular episodes (skip whole episodes) or if it will just be certain full episodes redone?
Love to see an abridged series, 10 episodes for Vegeta Saga, 25 for Namek/Frieza 35 for Trunks through to Cell Games 5 for World Tournament to Babidi and 25 for Buu.

This is very good news. The manga pacing just didn't tranlate well into animated form. Many of the DBZ episodes were just waaaaaay too long. :o

I'm confused about what they are doing.
Are they going to remake the sound track (inc voices) and edit the original animation?
That what it sounds like to me anyway

The animation will remain the same (they will touch it up here and there, like they did for the Dragon Box sets), but due to better technology it'll look better.
New animated intro and end credits, and a new sound track.
I can't tell you all how much more I am looking forward to seeing what they do regarding cuts/edits to the anime than I am to the live action movie.

I hated how all they did was trash talk each other for 3 episodes before having a fight. Hopefully this new series won't have these annoying conversations.

So the first Episode of Kai aired over the weekend.
I'm a fan of the new intro/outro music, and the new background music is pretty top notch too. I'll need more time to make a better judgement on the voice actors, but the Son family are fine so far.
Not sure about the new faster apce, for most of the series, it is really needed to cut down on useless (to the plot, or character development) filler, as well as overlong stare-downs, but there were times that I felt they cut too much, and the tension/dramatic buildup was lost, changing the entire feel of a scene.
New intro outro and eye catcher animation was good, I'm not the biggest fan of the new style of art used in these animations but it's (mostly) of good quality. Some of the newly drawn segments look worse than the original versions, but overall the brighter colour palette is a nice change for the series.
It's good to see Dragonball again, even in a truncated and touched up version, but I do wonder if it would have been better for Toei to re-animate the whole series. Guess only time will tell.
Now I need to find time to watch the new Full Metal Alchemist anime...

I watched FMA and Dragonball Kai yesterday. DB Kai just has a recap of Dragonball and then the appearance of Raditz. FMA is incredibly awesome. It looks so much better. It also features a certain villain from the manga for about two seconds.

I saw the live action moie the other day. Not being a big fan of DB, I couldn't be insulted by it, so I found it mildly enjoyable. Very mildly, mainly from the high levels of "bad" that were in it. Yum-cha (although tasty) annoyed the hell out of me. There might be a sequel too...:o

I'll admit that I liked the DBZ live action movie. Characters were pretty spot on (bar Goku sadly)
But no Krillin? sacrilege!
