View Full Version : Gimmicks That You Would Like To See Return.

With toys like Universe/Henkai Cyclonus and 'Headmaster' Bulkhead around, I was browsing G1 Transformers on the internet this morning and began to think that there were a lot of G1 gimmicks that could be done even better with today's Transforming technology.

The main one I think I'd like to see is 21st century Transformers Clones. I really do like the G1 ones, but it was never much of a challenge to go - oh... that one has wheels in robot mode and that one has extra legs and those two have wings. Today they really could produce two robots that do appear identical but - after a complex Classics-style unfolding transformation - change into completely different vehicles or beasts.

Are there any 'gimmicks' you'd like to see make a comeback?

Headmasters, where the head does transform. I'd love to see modern pretenders as well, i've always loved them.

They could actually do human-TFs - human alt modes reveal robots, like shellformers. Might not be very popular though. :p

I think they should revisit the double-agent gimmick; like a Classics Punch-Counterpunch and Doubledealer. It's a bit dodgy how with current toy engineering tech our more recent double-agents only feature the ability to change logos. (-_-)

Isn't Animated Shockwave like that?

Yes, he is, only he's an even better double-agent toy, since he has two distinct vehicle modes, unlike Counter/Punch and Doubledealer.

Pretenders! The Mega & Ultra ones, like Thunderwing where the shell transforms as well ( hopefully more articulated this time) and combines with an articulte innerbot. I dont mind if the innerbot is legends size as well. I was just playing with the Legends G2 megatron (from 25th series) and thought, how a little bit more articulation (an elbow) and an articulated outer shell of a skeletal samurai would make this a perfect Bludgeon. The decepticons have the more interesting Pretender shells as well.

Damnit, I want this toy!! I only just saw Animated Swindle last week... that's how slow distribution is in my neck of the woods. :( And it was at a stupid inflated price too. :( :(

Hopefully I can find Shockwave before the RotF toys come out. (-_-)

Base transformers, combiners with real hands/feet (officially), walking motors.
Parts-formers.
Throttle-bots, basically deluxe/scout car transformers with pullback motors in them.
Guns, not missle launchers, but guns.

And with better engineering than Cyber Slammers and Bumper Battlers. (-_-)

I'd like to see the Headmasters come back. Since Nightstick is poseble, it'd be possible to make Headmaster robot modes with articulation, as opposed to being bricks.

Also, water-squirting guns, and guns in general. While I appreciate the use of alternative weaponry, some characters just need guns since they're a signature weapon for them. *coughCheetorcough*

Yea, I'm going for what a throttlebot was, something with the motor that you manually transform. It wouldn't be hard to take a regular deluxe/scout transformer and add the motor to it.

Bumper battlers seem like a crude battlecharger. ;)

Voyager Animated Prime's water squirts water.

Hopefully I can find Shockwave before the RotF toys come out. (-_-)Does anyone know if we're getting the purple redeco here in Oz?

Not a gimmick per se, but I want more unusual vehicle modes - besides Energon Sharkticon we have no submarines, no buses at all, no taxis, no good satellites...

More combiner armor a la G1 Ultra Magnus please @Hasbro, ideally a widely accessible Classics/Universe Ultra Magnus version (with missiles dammit) since I missed out on FansProject's excellent-looking version.

Twins is a nice idea, though I'd rather see insectoid twins than vehicles. Not keen on Ani Safeguard though the vertial combiation does look interesting. Might wait and see how the *spoiler* RotF Retard Twins go.

He's already here - I bought one on Thursday. Check out the sightings threads.

There's a thread for discussing what alt modes you'd like to see here (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=2452) :) Also, I believe that Deepdive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepdive) has the most realistic looking submarine mode. But I agree that we need more of them. And we absolutely need taxis and buses; that's something that's never been done. Until then we always have Paulbot's Cabcharge (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=3297). ;)

Ya know there's something that I want back that doesn't need much improvement on - RUB SIGNS. Can I get an a-men?

I wound't mind a powermaster, However it takes a back seat to a decent headmaster or another targetmaster. Also I'd like to see the predacons/terrorcons get a combiner boxset.

I really think these should come back:

Rub Signs
Rubber Tires
Headmasters

Maybe also more water action for the younger kids - more water squirting and colour changing! Like the early 90's colour changers?

Yes, class is seen as a gimmick these days.......

rubber tyres were used in Car Robot, RiD, Binaltech, BT Asterisk, Alternators, KISS Play, reissues and some movie toys (e.g.: Leader Prime) etc. My concern is that Hasbro should _never_ go back to that awful cheap rubber they used for tyres in RiD. (-_-) To Hasbro's credit I personally haven't come across any problems with rubber tyres since RiD. Now we just have all kinds of other QC issues from HasTak (sigh). A lot of these ideas would work well so long as the QC is good. :/

I don't. Stickers were always a cheap and nasty way of adding detail onto toys. I much prefer more highly detailed sculpting and paint apps to accentuate a toy rather than adhesive bits of painted paper. :/

Definitely. So of the alt shell modes of the original pretenders were quite awesome and if they were modernised with transformation of outer shells too that'd be awesome.

All awesome suggestions. Would love the aqua speeders concept all again too. Great part of my childhood

Yeah fare deal. But on some figures I've looked at in say k-mart. Just the paint apps are quite shocking on some, even the 08 Botcon sets have bad paint.

I just like the Autobot and Decepticon Insignia sticker sheets.

Boat transformers. I know we're getting a new one in the form of a RotF Scout toy, but boats and things are still really underused.

Also, a gimmick that I'd like to see not so much return as just appear: Boat transformers that FLOAT. Since it kind of defeats the purpose of having a boat alt-mode if it cannot float in water.

"What! The Decepticons are attacking! I'll go and help stop them! Seaspray, transform! Wait, why am I sink-*glub glub glub glub*"

GoktimusPrime
26th March 2009, 08:57 PM
That would be really hard to pull off! In order for the boat mode to float, the hull would have to be a single piece without any gaps that would allow water to leak. It'd end up being the mother of all shellformers... like it'd make Cybertron Thunderblast/Galaxy Force Chromia look good! :)

Maybe small inflatable air bladders on the sides of the vehicle mode would work?

GoktimusPrime
26th March 2009, 09:26 PM
Not necessarily inflatable, you could make them out of hollow plastic, similar to the life preserver that comes with Charlie Chopper (http://www.tfu.info/2002/123/ChopperCharlie/choppercharlie.htm)... although I've never tested the buoyancy of that life preserver. :p
