Not sure if anyone else is using this, but I thought it might be a good resource for Adelaide OzFormers to keep in touch in real time with TF sightings.

My Twitter account is SofaMan. Add me to your "following" list, and I'll do the same for you. That way we can keep each other up on sightings in real time (at least if you have a Twitter app on your mobile). :)

Twitter

It's essentially micro-blogging. Each of your entries/posts are limited to 140 characters.

There's quite a lot of big name people who use it. You can check them out at the WeFollow (http://wefollow.com/) database. "Celebrities" I follow are Adam Savage (of Mythbusters), Grant Imahara (again of Mythbusters), Wierd Al Yankovic and Penn Jillette.

It's the latest new "it" internet thing that you must be part of.

How does it differ from other social networking sites like say Bebo, MySpace or Facebook?

First there were blogs. Then Facebook status updates. Now Twitter. And each is easier and shorted than the last.

I twitter at http://twitter.com/paulmelb but be warned you might learn more about me than you need to know :o

It has very narrow functionality. It's basically like your status updates on Facebook, and nothing else. Micro-blogging is a very good description of it.

Go to twitter.com and sign up. I have the Twitterific app on my iPhone, so I can update on sightings when I'm out and about. I think there are Twitter apps for most smartphone platforms.

BAH I say, BAH!

I signed up for Myspace, and everyone started using Facebook
I signed up for Facebook and now everyone is using Twitter!
I'm thinking that if I sign up to Twitter, everyone will move onto the next thing. Like Mybook, or Facespace or something where you can only do Pictures of yourself

You can pretty much do "Twitter" on Facebook. It will just be thrown in with everything else, or you can make a message to everyone that updates like a forum thread

Twitter is rubbish, all online social stuff is rubbish, I couldn't give two stuffs about what someone is doing

In saying that though, I do have myspace and facebook  but haven't used myspace in about a year and facebook maybe once a fortnight haha

For the most part I agree - the trick is working out what it is good for (i.e. those things it does that actually add value to your life), and not being drawn into the dross. Facebook has been a great resource for catching up with old friends with whom one has lost contact, for instance, but there's a lot of timewasting stuff there as well.

I think Twitter could be a fine resource for alerting fellow Transfans to sightings in a realtime way. There is a lot of starf***ing nonsense on Twitter as well - I really don't feel the need to know whether P Diddy has just taken a dump in realtime. :p

Yeah, you're right, it does have a purpose, looking up old friends etc, blogs are good for an outlet, when used correctly I have no problem with these things. I just get sick of things like "Random facebook idiot: just cooked a stir fry, yummy!!" or "Random facebook idiot: omg twilight is liek so AWESOMEZZ!!1! he's so HOT!!!1!!11" and like you said, the random twitter stuff that "celebrities" think we care about :p

Facebook and Twitter aren't comparable. I sit on AIM/MSN all day and whatever status I have there typically says it all. I've occasionally jumped on twitter, but have little to say and get bored with most others' self-celebration. I get enough of that here :D

All the being said, I do think it's a great tool for sightings!

I wasn't much impressed with the 'blog' concept when it became a fad, because it gave people the chance to keep up with every teeny tiny thing going on in their lives as if they are that interesting or important enough for people to keep track of... Um people, that's called stalking! And as self absorbed as you may be thinking that you are the centre of the universe and everyone wants to read your 'diary', chances are that the people who are reading it and keeping track of you, aren't the nice type of people you want to have reading it...

And now we have twitter... the answer to 'how do I make sure people are actually following the events of my life, because I'm that important'...

It's bad enough that we have people writing about themselves to be noticed like a celebrity, but now have the ability to force people to get live updates of their boring little lives.

A concept like twitter would be useful for things like watching the stock market, or sports results, but celebrity twitter feeds??? It's worse than reality TV... and you're essentially being authorised to cyber-stalk someone...

It makes me wonder if it something that could lead to abductions, as it sounds like it could be a means to tracking someone's plans and movements.

I opened up a second Twitter account exclusively to tweet Transformer related sightings and info. The sightings are naturally QLD specific.
