Hey guys. I've got another trip to Japan lined up for this August, and i'm gonna be picking up various Gundam merchandise, some HG kits to start me off (never done one before - looking at Hi-Nu Gundam), and perhaps a Robot Damashii/Spirits figure or two.

I guess this thread can be used for all Gundam talk, but right now i'm wondering if any of you have bought any Robot Damashii figures and could offer feedback? How they compare with S/HCM Pro, Revoltech etc? I'll even allow talk of the non-Gundam ones ;)

i found a fair few Perfect grade ones for cRaZy prices online, and was wondering about he quality of these. one of them (1/60 Exia) looks like absolute crap, but the PG strike gundam looks pretty good for 46USD

I'm currently displaying stuff from Seed/Seed Destiny and 00 at the moment but that will likely change very soon once my sister-in-law returns from Japan in a few weeks. ;)

Nice looking Gundam model collection there.

I know very little about model building. I'd like to have a crack. I've had a look at some tutorials and well they were pretty daunting.

It's a bit hard to tell but do you do anything to them? As in give them a paint (or whatever its called) coating? Go through it with Gundam markers? Etc.

Indeed it is a great collection. Mine are all in boxes although they are mostly SD Gundam.

pirate... the gundam model kits are easy to build. Parts are all numbered and easy to find. Instructions are clear and detailed and need no worded instructions. They are snap on model kits, so no glue/cement required at all.

The kit already comes in different base colours and usually with a sticker sheet for more detailed portions and what you see in fungal's pics is what comes from the box. Also the joints uses rubber pegs and ball joints so they are as good to pose as any action figure.

Should give it a try. Start with a 1/144 scale model and try not to get addicted. ;)

Most of the models you see there are High Grade 1/144 scale. I find this is the best scale as the vast majority of kits in the Gundam universe are released in this scale. Bandai release only the more popular kits in larger scales. Besides, THIS (http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN907985) kit is only available in 1/144 scale and remains one of my grails (shipping just kills it). As for my models, I usually dont use markers as I'm not very good at doing panel lines and I like the look of the kit out of the box. Just be aware there are also First Grade kits available in 1/144 scale and these are considered beginner kits so will have less articulation, less details and may require painting to match colours as shown on the box. And finally, buy a sprue cutter - it will save you time and the risk of broken pieces as a result of removing pieces from the plastic runners (personal experience speaking here).

This 18 storey high replica will emit lights and have 14 mist emitting section to replicate heat release. It's made of reinforced fibreglass plastic. Going to be up for 2 months.

That's at least the second, possibly third 1:1 scale Gundam I've seen. Someone else made a 1:1 scale RX-78, but lying down (it was at a Gundam convention in Japan). An individual made a gigantic Zeta Gundam, but I don't think it was 1:1... still bigger than my house though. ;)

Being a huge SD Gundam kit fan, I rarely delve into proper Gundam kits. Recently I delved back with the recent 1/144 HG Gundam 00 kits (Exia Repair II and 0 Gundam Type ACD) and oh my. The engineering with these tiny models are unbelievable. With the little experience I've had with previous kits, these new ones mimic engineering I thought only possible with the HG and even MG 1/100 scale kits. My mind boggles at the build and features with the latest 1/100 sets.

Have always loved SD/BB Gundams and been getting them steadily but never this much core gunpla. The Seed mechs kinda got a little too samey towards the end but OO Gundam mechs have some distinct and creative new mechs which appeals to my own Gundam needs.

I'm gonna stick with the 1/144 HG stuff. Got tempted to get the MG 1/100 Exia or the 1/60 scale but am happy with the smaller sets.

I've never been a fan of Gunpla; I guess cos I just love playing with my toys too much, and Gunpla just don't stand up to the rigour of toy play. Or any model kit for that matter; I've trashed plenty of Macross and other such models trying to play with them, and I've _never_ been the kind of kid who was ever rough with their toys. Most of my broken Transformers were broken by other kids, not by my hands (others later broke by my hand due to age, like those with GPS/BPS; but that's got nothing to do with rough handling).

But I do like the core story of Gundam; by "core" story I mean that mainstream continuity. I'm not a fan of out-of-continuity (or elseworld) stories like Gundam Wing etc. I'm just a fan of everything from the original Gundam universe. The only non-canonical Gundam story I don't mind would be Gundam F-91; every other out-of-canon Gundam story doesn't interest me.

Collection wise I've lost most of my old Gunpla... I have one beat up Gundam X model lying around - and yes, I'm aware of the irony that of all my Gunpla that I haven't lost it would have to be one from a non-canonical series :p If anyone wants it they can have it (or what's left of it) for free. I'm sure it might come in handy as spare parts for someone's custom or kitbash. ;)

Ironically I don't have any Gundam animé on DVD! I probably should get some. I really like 0080, 0083 and MS08 ('specially cos MS08 stars Genda Tessho, the Japanese equivalent of Peter Cullen :D). So my Gundam collection (if you want to call it that) basically just consists of two manga, three novels and a small Gelgoog PVC figurine (t'was a freebie :p). Here it is:

My gunpla renaissance has finally hit it's stride. In anticipation of PG OO Raiser I decided to dabble into 1/60 gunpla kits and got these two babies (presented by their SD counterparts):

Already built Exia and I must say, I never realized how large 1/60 scale is. It's taller than Masterpiece Prime! Can't wait to build the Lightning Edition of 1/60 Strike Freedom. Looks especially gorgeous with the lights on. Gotta set aside a full day free to make it. There's a lot in that box!

Check your PM blackie ;). Exia was cheaper than I expected and Strike Freedom is probably the cheapest I will find it locally. Surprisingly the MG Extra Finish 1/100 Strike Freedom costs a little more than the LE. Although LE is ungraded and the MG details surely trumps the details on the ungraded 1/60. Just got them for display purposes really. They are so striking as they are so large. Of course its all about the build too. Love it!

I bought back just a MG Exia from Japan and recently completed it. It's my first attempt at a kit and i gotta say, i think they're great value for money (in Japan anyway!). Heaps of time to build and apply decals (no painting for me) - still deciding whether to panel-line (scared i'll bork it since it's my first attempt!) But building it, i found it's just a great way to relax after a long day. To Goktimus, i don't particularly think this model kit is unplayable in any sense; perhaps more recent kits hold together better than they used to?

I really want a PG kit but the boxes are just so big to ship, and i can't bring myself to pay the markup in Australia :( IMO the PG 00 doesn't look that hot, some of the proportions are off - actually all the things that Ngee Khiong said in his blog (http://ngeekhiong.blogspot.com/2009/10/pg-00-raiser-completed_19.html) hold true for me too :( I'd rather get the PG Astray Red Frame, also since 00 is so similar looking to Exia.

MG wise that new Astray Blue Frame 2nd Revise looks to be awesome (http://www.dalong.net/review/mg/m124/m124_p.htm).

BUT my most awaited G-thing at the moment is Super HCM Pro Unicorn Gundam - despite some parts swapping I think they've done a fantastic job for the size. SHCM are pricey, but worth every penny i reckon.

I don't paint or line my kits neither. I'm in it for the build mostly and these recent OO kits have been ridiculously good and detailed especially the HG 1/144 ones. Heck even the Fighting Action Grade kits are unbelievably good for the size.

I have the original Astray Blue Frame and the 2nd Revise looks to blow the original away. Can't wait to get my hands on that kit.

As for PG OO. The blog link doesn't work kurdt. I'm still wanting one the altered proportions doesn't really bother me much since I'm in it for the build.

Although these arent actually gundams, I thought I'd post this here because they are pretty similar to the bandai sets you all know and love.

Has any one built or bought any of the armored core model kits? I used to LOVE the games on PS one, and although i havent played the newest ones, i loved the customization of the mech you would build, hence im wondering if anyone has any of the kits?

Do any of you guys have any good suggestions of what to use as a substitute gundam marker? there is only one hobby store around me that stocks them and they never have them in, ive read on different forums about using fine tip pens, however some people say t heir great while others say they are horrible.

i once saw a tutorial video where they used paint and lighter fluid to panel line.
i just bought my markers online, theyre a few bucks on ebay these days

Panel lining is so difficult to make it look right. Personally I hate them. Makes them look terrible for my tastes. The lines have to be pretty much hairline for me to like.

You can try the regular felt tip pens you can get at stationary sections and see how it goes and whether they stay on or rub off. Although I'm not sure on the thickness of the points available.

I've gone gunpla crazy the past 6 months. Still haven't built that PG 00 Raiser but building that this weekend. Have bought heaps of MG's and the majority of the NG 1/100 00 gunplas. My friends have finally got bit with the bug and we recently did a group order that arrived a couple of days ago:

I love applying decals but that MG Unicorn was ridiculous. about 300 decals most of them clear decals that required trimming as they are to be positioned on edges and corners. Took 12 hours all up just for decals!

MG Unicorn is a beautiful mech and a great kit. Very little articulation though and fragile in Destroy mode. The build is fantastic.

The PG Skygrasper ain't mine. My best buds for his PG Strike.

As for markers, most won't export out due to them being chemicals. There's a reliable and popular site: ishop2go but I haven't ordered from these guys but they do have a range of Gundam Markers with no export exclusion warnings (but they may have it once you get to actual ordering):

I might give the felt tips a go, thanks for the advice. I havent built a gundam in a long time, i focused my time on some armored core kits, and as much as i love those, they are very draining and very tiresome which is why im thinking of picking up a basic gundam to have a play with

The torso is an amazing build with about 100-200 peices all layered over each other around a GN circular frame. They can easily make an Exia out of the frame. The clutch is wonderfully simple that makes it lock in place. Articulation is great although the ankle articulation is very limited which was really dissapointing.

I'm a lazy builder bruticus. I'm in it for the build and I'm more than satisfied with the finished product as is. So I don't do any post-build painting or whatnot. Just the decals and transfers.

And yes PG 00 is awesome. The clutches on the main joints hold well and the rubber grip parts on the soles of the feet really help stbilize some poses that might tip non reubber soled mechs over. The fully articulated fingers are great. My mate built PG Strike and that has perhaps the most amazing legs I've seen in a gunpla ever.

blackie: have fun. I'm personally more inclined towards the Titans version though.

My next project from my huge pile of unbuilt gunpla will be MG GNX, MG Turn A and MG ZZ.

Well I've managed to make PG Strike Freedom sans the awesome backpack (the day ran out). The build was ok. Nothing too special compared to PG 00 Raiser and is a lot more like a large MG. One pic for now:

Awesome head build and final product. Zero decals and lights in the head for the eyes and jewels.

The wings were repetetive to build but it's pretty awesome but it has its flaws, it tends to automatically splay out due to the spring release being a little too loose. The wing fold out technology is idential to the MG with a few flourishes here and there.

The size of the mech is actually bigger than PG 00 Raiser as seen below. So the same pricepoint is justified. Overall though it does feel like just a giant MG with no real new technology or engineering to make it as special as the 00 Raiser (with it's GN Drives, clutch joint system and the amazing circular frame build). But it's sheer size and flashy looks makes up for it. It makes a presence in anyones collection. I just wished that all exposed gold parts were all chrome gold and not the gold plastic.

kit completly comes down to personal taste, but depending on your skill level/confidence/budget:

1/144 high grade kits - can be a little fiddly, but come up quite nice in the end
1/100 no grade/high grade kits - amazing, love them, like the 1/144 but bigger, more posable and look better all round
1/100 master grade kits - more advanced, but a lot more posable and a more fun build

i only buy nograde/highgrade when i cant get the mastergrade kit. saying that, i need to get building my PG strike....

Force Impulse and Strike are definites, and it's a toss between which of the 1/144s to add. Knowing me I'll get both, especially given the price. I was surprised, they're a lot cheaper than what I was expecting. What's shipping cost like from HLJ?

Basically this is a belated birthday present for myself. I love my Lego and all, but lately I've really been overcome with the urge to get a proper model kit. I love spending the time creating something and then having that feeling of geeky accomplishment when I finish it. Haven't done one since I was a kid, except for a little SD Gundam kit for my birthday last year, and I figured Gundam was the best range to go for. Giant effing robots? Yes please. :D

Oooh nice. Master Grade Force Impulse. Love that sword that's why I settled with Sword Impulse over that one. Love the proportions on the MG Force Impulse. Very lithe and lanky. The deployment modes are a joke tho. Great work and a great pose.

All the pics I have put up of my gunpla are straight builds primatives. They come in those colours already and those logo's on them are decals and rub-on dry transfer decals.

Although I do have some gundam markers just to cover up any cut/nub marks but that's it. People always ask me why I don't line them, it's because it looks terrible lined unless you really do fine lines.

one amazing technique i saw was using ink, it goes into the creases and then the rest wipes away somehow

MG Exia is indeed one of the greatest MG's but watch out for that toe getting loose and make any standing pose dangerous, get it on a stand and it's perfect.

Speaking of perfection, I just finished making Real Grade RX78-2 and holy cheesus crust, this is simply the best kit I have made. From the runner placement of parts, the way it is built, the amazing inner frame and the endless cladding to form the armor. Three shades of white, 2 shades of red and blue each. The perfect decals. All in 1/144 scale. This is MG, to PG quality in a such a small kit. I was utterly amazed throughout the build. I will buy ANY repaint (waiting for the G3 repaint). I will take clearer pics next time but these ones will suffice for now. Not pictured is the amazing, transforming, core fighter at 4cm long.

For those not familiar, this is 1/144 scale, this figure is 13cm tall and that head is only 1.5cm tall.

The MG Victory has been usurped of its best kit ever. I can't wait to make RG Zaku II and the upcoming Aile Strike.

I've essentially finished my RG Aile Strike Gundam (only stickers remain) and my sentiments echo Stompy's RX-78 impressions!

WOW, for the size this things really packs a lot of attention to detail! It's well constructed so nothing feels flimsy - it compares pretty favourably to the Super HCM Pro's, only really missing the diecast (& maybe the plastic isn't quite as good too). But for the price, i would recommend anyone try these out - highly recommended!

I've only done about 20 of what seems like hundreds of stickers for it - it's gonna look awesome when finished!

You can try the action figure lines of Gundams. There's different brands:
- Super HCM Pro
- Bandai Fix Configuration
- Bandai Robot Damashii

They are usually more costly than kits and is about 1/144 scale (10-12 cm tall) but is more action figure-like. I don't really have much experience from them as I'm a gunpla kit builder personally.

This was pretty darn good. I haven't been impressed by a Master Grade for so long until now. It's a sturdy kit and represents the 00 Raiser as an avatar really well. The gimmicks are great but only comes with 1 LED light. It can house 5 (for the two Raiser side binders, the two GN Drives or Condensers and the head).

Estimated (straight up) build time was 9 hours total. A fantastic and more affordable alternative to the Perfect Grade. Although the Perfect Grade has so much bells & whistles all over the place despite it's articulation flaws.

Very very pleased and an awesome Master Grade kit for my favorite Gundam mech of all time.

I've never looked into any of the Gundam figures to be honest, but since I am in the continual pursuit of buying items that have a certain 'cool' factor, I've come across this Musha Gundam (http://robotkingdom.com/services/eshop/main.php?action=details&CatType=Category&II=GDFIX0035&lang=us&CatID=5) on RK.

Can anyone shed some light on it? In terms of size, poseability, assembly requirements, etc?

From my own research that figure is 1/144 scale. So about 12-15cm tall. Poseability looks good, as with most Fix Figuration figures. There should be minimal basic assembly required to put on the alternative parts/armor on but nothing that will take longer than 10 minutes.

They are good if you want a stress free, highly poseable gundam as gunpla kits while for the most part solid but can sometimes have pieces that can fall off if you are rough with playing/posing. With saying that though, the actual Master Grade Kit of the Shin Musha (+ Shin Musha Mk.II) is more my preference. Note that this is the special edition with a glossy finish to the plastic and gold parts.

Yep. Full assembly is required as they are model kits and come looking like this initially:

Then it can take anywhere between 5-12 hours to build, depending on skill. Mind you that the assembly really only requires cutters to get them off the gates and they will look like that out of the box as a straight assembly. No painting or extra detailing work required.

If ever you want to dive into Gunpla, I'd suggest you start small with a No Grade (or unmarked/ungraded) kits that can vary in size class, probably best to stick with the 1/100 00 Gundam or Seed range. These are easy to make and the finished product looks good. Roughly 2-5 hours. Cost from $15-$100

Then go for High Grade kits or HG. These are 1/144 scale and have really good detail, on par or better than the Figuration kits at good prices. Roughly 2-5 hours to build. Costs between $20-$80. Averages at $30 each.

Then there is the Master Grades or MG. These are the detailed kits with full internal skeletons and excellent detail. Can take anywhere beteen 4-15 hours to build. Costs anywhere between $35-$200

There is also the very expensive Perfect Grades or PG. These are 1/60 in scale, so about 30-40 cm tall and have a ridiculous amount of detail and gimmicks. Builds can take anywhere between 18-48 hours. Costs between $150-$450

There are also Real Grades or RG. New line that are 1/144 in size with the detail of a Master Grade. You'll need a bit of experience with these as the parts can be quite small. Build time can be anywhere between 4-12 hours.

Hey Stompy, those Dynasty Gundam Musha Gundams look fantastic. I'm thinking of getting them both myself. Did you by them in OZ or did you import them? On that note, where did you get them?

A bit of both, I usually just buy them locally at a few specialty shops in Melbourne. Imported a few times, but it ends up being just 10% cheaper. Shipping can kill you on volume. They take up a lot of space eventhough they don't weigh much. Nowadays it might end up cheaper to import, due to our great dollar.

In Melbourne there's a few places to go:
- One Stop Anime (Tivoli Arcade, Bourke St CBD, opposite Target, my personal favorite and is always first with the latest kits)
- Animasia (Grattan St Carlton, just off Lygon St, biggest range as is an official supplier)

As for The DW Musha Gundams, they are excellent. They are modified MG's. Shin Musha is based off the MG One Year War RX782 and Musha Mk.2 is based off The MG Mk.2 v2.0. The new armor are excellent although the gold plated parts jacks up the price. You have to get the special "Sengoku No Jin" edition of Shin Musha (Red) in order to get the gold plated parts, otherwise you get an ugly orangey plastic with the regular edition. Just look at the side of the box and it should have the stand with background included.

Availability of the two... Mk.2 is easier to find as it was released in the past year. I got mine from One Stop. As for the Special Edition Shin Musha, that comes and goes. The three bricks & mortar shops I listed above don't have any at the moment as that goes quickly. Probably best to order online.

And so it begins... entered the world of Gunpla today.

Whilst out shopping, walked into Hobbyco, spent half an hour looking over the Gundam kits and ended up walking out with a 1/144 HG Gundam Astray Red Frame kit (http://www.hobbyco.com.au/images/stock/g0122715.jpg).

Spent 2 hours putting it together and I must say that I am very impressed with these Gundam kits - the quality is awesome, the bot looks sensational and it's so super poseable.

After I finished building it, I had a great feeling of accomplishment and had the urge to go out and buy another one (but sadly the store would have been closed).

I think I'm hooked - IMO (for someone that only displays their TFs) Gundam kits represent better value for money than a TF toy any day.

I normally buy a TF, open it (that's if I don't leave it MISB/MOSC), spend half hour max fiddling with it and then put it on a display shelf - half an hour's entertainment.

Gundam - a couple of hours building it, half hour or so fiddling and posing it = better value for money.

Anyways, will be purchasing and putting together a few more when I get a chance.

Make a few more High Grades and then go for a new Master Grade (2005 onwards, look on bottom left corner of box.) Then try a Real Grade and maybe a Perfect Grade somewhere down the track. ;)

Red Frame Astray is great. In fact I'd recommend the MG Astray Red Frame as your first. You'll be floored. ;)

I see what you mean by the quality of the later HG's Stompy... I may revisit them later on, but for now, MG's are the way to go for me (prefer the scale and the detail).

Avalanche Exia and Harute look nice - like the styling and look of them.

So I attempted to tackle MG Sinanju last night - spent 2+ hours and only managed to build his torso, head and one arm. :o

Love the intricate detailing and all the bits and pieces so far, but will take my time building this one since I want him to look as awesome as he does on the box.

MG's of Strike Freedom & Astray Red Frame are on order, so would like to finish Sinanju before they arrive - I've got at least a week I think. :p

Will probably tackle Strike Freedom next (when it arrives).

What's Deathscythe like? I like the look of him and may order him when I order Musha Mk-2

Oh wow. Straight into the deep end of MG's for you huh? Enjoy Sinanju. It's one of the, if not the best MG's out. You will notice a bit of a dip in intircacy with Strike Freedom after Sinanju but you will adore Red Frame Astray.

If you are gonna go for Deathscythe make sure you go for the EW version with the wings. The wings actually hold up and is supported well. Regular Deathscythe doesn't have the wings and is white. It's from the Gundam Wing series and they are getting a lot of love the past year with MG releases for nearly all the lead mechs. Their engineering is ok. Nothing like Sinanju, but its all very clean and lean and satisfying.

I like MG too but because most of the lesser known Gundams tend to come out in 1/144 HG scale, HG kits tend to be the ones I get more often than not. Of course, thete are some kits that aren't available in HG (Shin Musha for one), but those ones deserve to be done in MG. I only get MG kits of the ones I really like (Deathscythe is one) and even then I'm hesitant because of their size (and my lack of space). Welcome to the club by the way! :D

I get what you mean by craving to do a quick build... might pick up a couple HG's (or RGs) further down the track, but plan on sticking with the 1/100 scale MGs at the moment.

I sung the RG tune a dozen or so posts ago with RX782. Was my favorite kit of the past year. ;) I've got the other RG's piled up waiting to be built. After all decals have been attached, they are just absolutely stunning. Only downfall is some parts tend to come off. So strictly a display piece.

But yes kurdt, I sing the same praises as you do over Real Grades. Can't wait until they start doing 00 mechs.

Yes there are. They are like enlarged High Grades. No internal frames like MG's and proportions are different. So it will look lsightly different to it's MG counterpart if any. Since there are no Internal Frames, it can get too top heavy for the "hollow"legs to support and can have balance issues.

The best NG 1/100 are the 00 Series. Especially Avalanche Exia, Arios & Kyrios. The Seed/Destiny NG's are also decent. I wouldn't bother going back to older series for NG 1/100. Stick with Seed/Destiny & 00.

It's up to you whether you can justify the cheaper option over the MG versions, but in the long run, you are better off with the MG's. Although there are NG 1/100 mechs that aren't and unlikely to be a MG. The 00 Series NG's are pretty darn good.

I finally finished assembling MG Sinanju last night and now need to go sticking all the stickers on (when I get a chance tonight or tomorrow).

So far, I estimate a build time of about 9 hours, but man, it was definitely worth it - he's totally awesome looking! :)

Not sure if I will apply all the stickers - maybe a couple of the gold foil ones since I like the clean look of him.

Btw, is there a special way to remove the pieces off the runners/sprue to prevent rub/wear marks?

I'm using a Sangokuden nipper to cut them off and trim off the excess plastic, but I still get wear marks - should I use a file to lightly sand them back instead?

Or do you guys use something to touch up the wear afterwards?

I use one of my wife's nail files, don't tell her :)
Filing hurts after a while though and probably doubles build time, so i only bother when the piece is gonna be easily viewable on the completed model, or if the connection between pieces will be hindered by not filing.

I usually just use the cutter to trim off the excess and use my nail to smooth it out. I invested in some Gundam Markers to cover up the discoloured cut marks..

I'm a straight up builder and really in it for the build. So I don't go to too much trouble. They are barely recognizable once built and displayed.

Filing hurts after a while though and probably doubles build time, so i only bother when the piece is gonna be easily viewable on the completed model, or if the connection between pieces will be hindered by not filing.


I usually just use the cutter to trim off the excess and use my nail to smooth it out. I invested in some Gundam Markers to cover up the discoloured cut marks..

I'm a straight up builder and really in it for the build. So I don't go to too much trouble. They are barely recognizable once built and displayed.

I'm like you Kurdt in the sense that I would really only bother filing the part if it's noticeable when displayed or hinders movement of another part.

Most of the time I just do what you do Stompy and trim the piece and use my nail to smooth it out.

Yeah I was referring more to whether there was a special way to cut the pieces off without leaving discoloured cut marks - but I guess not.

Rampagesss - Tamiya re-release stuff all the time, I'm sure that Mclaren kit is around. The countach is the Fujimi 5000S but the Aoshima ones are nicer. Most from HLJ.

Wow these figures look fantastic! How tall is that MG Strike Freedom (or wide rather)?

MG is about 22cm tall for the robot. Wing span is about 30cm.

PG Strike Freedom is about 34cm tall and a wingspan of about 55 cm.

VP: I finally found the battery charger for my Digital Camera so it will take better pics than these phone pics. Still not going to be top notch quality tho.

PG Strike Freedom was ok. It's a good starting off point for Perfect Grade, but IMO not worth the $400 price tag.

BUT.
That is because I made the PG 00 Raiser first. That was an awesome build revolving around joints that are circular and had a clutch system for the major joints! Twin light up GN Drives that spin and the mega huge GN Sword III of course. Plus my bias over 00 mechs. ;)

PG 00 Raiser is another one right at the top of the list for me too... I think I'll work my way through my remaining 12 odd kits and move to a PG next. :D

The beam sabre effect parts have a peg size of just under 2mm. Basically fits a 2mm socket.

The actual hilts themselves comes in various sizes.

[EDIT]: Actually, that's the Average beam sabre peg size for 1/100 scale models. Even in the same scale some might have different sizes.

Here are my thoughts on those MGs:

G Gundam - very basic but still a fun build, the only gripe I had was the little screws. I did however love the rubber parts used for the base of his feet since they're ultra grippy allowing him to be posed in various action stances and not topple over.

Epyon - this guy is a totally awesome build, the engineering and design is well thought out - I especially love his chain/shield weapon that can be extended and flex or kept straight simply by pulling out on each of the links. I highly recommend it if you haven't already got him.

F91 Harrison - I found him very fiddly and my patience was tested since he's quite small for a 1/100 MG (meaning the parts were all relatively smaller too).

Shin Musha MkII - a very enjoyable build and looks the goods once completed, but I hated the gold parts since I needed to pay extra attention when trimming them (since the gold cracks and flakes if not done properly)

As for RGs, I don't really like any of the ones released (so far), but the thought of an MG type build in a smaller scale doesn't really appeal to me since I'm predicting it to be quite fiddly (like the MG F91).

I intend on jumping on a PG in the not too distant future - just haven't decided on which one yet (plus I still have a ton of MGs and HGs to work through first).

Sandrock is still sitting on my shelf unbuilt but it looks absolutely gorgeous on every picture I have seen it in.

Just waiting on HeavyArms and the EW team is complete. Then time to bring in the "Custom" variants.

I love the colour scheme for Zeta Plus C1. That mould is just a little off for my liking in regrds to proportions. The torso is too short compared to it's long legs. The v.2 moulds are much better. Although Delta's grey scheme is nice and of course the Unicorn Delta Plus tops both of them.

MG Sazabi is a monster of a mech! I bet he towers over all your MG's. ;)

Yes, Sandrock is indeed awesome - I was so impressed by the pics I saw of him that I decided to build him first even though I have a pile of other kits which have been sitting around longer. :)

Sazabi is quite an imposing beast compared to the other MGs - he towers over everything in my display at the moment (and looks very nice next to Sinanju).

For quite an old kit, I found him to be an enjoyable build and only found his backpack/rocket launcher thingy fiddly.

I agree with your thoughts on Zeta Plus, his proportions are a bit off, but he still looks quite nice since his colour scheme separates him from the rest of the white/blue/red/yellow brigade. :p

I've also bitten the bullet and purchased my first PG - OO Raiser (since it's on sale at HLJ for $320 shipped).

Not sure if I'll build him just yet though - might tackle MG Seven Sword next. :)

My first PG arrived (OO Raiser) - had a look inside the box and wow... it looks very daunting. :eek:

Guess I'll just wait until I've built up enough courage to tackle building it. :p

For those not familiar with Gundam kits - it's pictured next to a 600ml bottle of water to give you an idea of how big the box is.

The figure itself should be around 32cm tall once completed.

Enjoy that PG Raiser. Set aside a good 3-4 days for it. When I built it it took me 36 hours all up. You will not regret it. The price is justified. Unlike PG Strike Freedom which was really disappointing. Just don't do it in one or two sitting like I did. It's exhausting.

I actually intentionally bought the regular version due to the fact that it didn't have the gold chrome parts - building the Mk II one annoyed the hell out of me since you had to take extra precaution with the trimming of the gold chrome parts.

I didn't like the glossier red paint finish or want the display stand that came with the special edition anyway, so it was an easy choice (especially when the regular one cost me less than half what it would have set me back to get the special edition). :)

I won't be tackling PG OO Raiser till at least after Xmas since the gf will be going overseas for a few weeks, giving me ample time to work on it properly.

Not really worthwhile spending the extra dosh if you intend on painting it anyway mate (not unless you want the display stand and the pain-in-the-behind-to-trim gold chrome parts) :)

Stompy, you're totally right mate - Astray Red Frame is pure awesomeness! The build on him comprises of so many small parts, but at no point did I find them fiddly. Totally love the engineering on him - will probably get Blue Frame now (even though essentially it's pretty much the same build) :)

Seven Sword G was quite simple in comparison but was an enjoyable build nonetheless. I love the design of the circular joint connectors and the hollowed out areas where you can attach the LED units - just need to go out and get four of them now to light him up! :D

It's an arena based mech fighting game. Usually 2 vs 2 but can vary to 1 vs 1/2/3/4 and any other combinations. Think Virtual On like mechanics with lots of wind-up and recovery with most moves to balance out their power and strength. With some long cool down or limited ammo on powerful weapon/attacks for even further balance.

You don't have to play it a million times just to unlock your favorite mech (like in Dynasty Warriors) as they are all available right from the start. There is a code available to download Hi-Nu Gundam but you will have to start a Japan/Asia PSN account to download it.

I really wish Hasbro would use this engine to make a really awesome arena based fighting game with the Transformers franchise. The engine's been around for a long time now since the PS2 games and PSP iterations. With a very awesome new IP spin-off on the GameCube called Gotcha Force (complete with transforming robots and combiners!) which I totally adore. Seeing my favorite Gundam mechs battle it out in HD in my lounge room is worth it.

It's like Smash Bros but of the Gundam Universe. It might feel a bit random and fast initially but once it clicks it's one of the best mech battle arena games you will ever play. Check out the extended trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pU2698eh2sk

The menu's are easy to navigate, there's a translation FAQ on the net, but really it's all basic and there's english on the main menu itself. It is just a fighting game with 4 buttons.

Jump/Boost
Main Weapon
Melee Weapon
Change Target

There's also extra attacks by combining Jump Boost, Main & Melee:

Boost + Melee = Special Melee
Boost + Main = Special Weapon
Melee + Main = Additional weapon

You can usually press up, down or sideways when doing most of the moves to produce different attacks.

Awesome pics as always. Not a fan of Hi-Nu or RX93. The latter I have which has a hilariously disproportionally HUGE head. I had to pay attention to your picture to determine what grade it was, as the HG is pretty detailed and with your photo skills, you can make HG and NG's look beautiful. The knee gave it away as an MG. ;)

I've seen the LED head kits you can get for these, but seeing as I have the LED GN Drive attachments for the OO Gundams and I hardly ever turn them on, I don't really see a point getting them. :p

I haven't got a Unicorn nor do I plan on getting the full armor one since I don't really like the look of it (too much white).

Apparently the Unicorn kit is also very flimsy and parts are prone to breaking - so it's an easy pass for me.

The massive weapons on the full armor version are very nice though :)

Fungal:
Unicorn is a pretty spectacular kit in terms of engineering, but it is a bit ambitious, as with most v.Ka kits and is very fiddly and is not very playable in Destroy mode due to its fragile open armor. The transformation is an engineering marvel but it is difficult to handle as bits are loose and can fall off easily. I have the HD Unicorn with MS Cage still awaiting to be built and am considering the Full Armor version. Heck who am I kidding, I'll end up with it too.

Yeah I went with Char's Zaku II on the v1 kit so decided to go a different colour scheme this time - not much a fan of the pinkish red colour though.

I enjoyed the v2 so much that I've just ordered the J.Ridden and S.Matsunaga version - also contemplating getting 3 x Black Tri-Star ones too :o

Gouf v2 is also on the list to get around too, but I'm hoping they release a v2 of the Gouf Custom (the one with the honking big machine gun)

I guess it depends on which grade kit you have?

The two pics you have linked to above shows what I believe two different grade kits.

They would naturally be different colours and slight variations due to the parts utilised in the assembly of it (as a result of the manufacturing process) - higher grade kits have higher number of parts and more intricate detailing.

As for what is 'official', that really depends on what your interpretation of the term is - the anime character model? Or the box art on the relevant grade kit?

I don't have an AGE-1 Normal (yet) but have the 1/48 Mega Size one on order and will probably get the 1/100 MG when it gets released, so sadly I can't shed anymore light on it, but maybe this will help:

Well there is an official "Color Guide" in the manual but it's in japanese. It tells you what colour and what mix percentage you need of the paint colour combo:

Yeah they are mate, they're not a lot of fun to apply - decals never really are, I guess.

I didn't follow any of the instructions or box art on where to apply them - just stuck them where I felt like it, looks ok I think?

I did botch up the one on J.Ridden Zaku's shield though :(

Btw, you might want to check out Hobbyco - they've got a post-Xmas sale on at the moment.

Received a gift voucher for Xmas, so dropped in there this morning and bought one item at full price and got the second for 50% off - these were Gundams, so not sure if it applies to other stuff too.

The dry decals are easy to put on after practice. May I suggest that for bigger dry decals, you cut out the decal and then sticky tape it over the part it is to go on, then once secure, rub away!

Just watch out for all the decals and dry decals on ver.Ka kits. MG Unicorns decals took about 6 hours due to the decals not being cut right, while Sinanju's dry decals were tricky due to the rounded armor peices they are to be put on. Check out the shoulder pad's white stripes. Yikes:

Yeah, I've avoided applying all of Sinanju's marking decals - way too fiddly for me. :o

I think the decals look fine on some of them whereas I prefer the clean look on some others - Zaku's definitely need markings (due to the 'militaristic' nature of the 'grunts') whereas pretty show ponies like OO Raiser look fine without them IMO.

Yeah, it's just the gloss finish on the plastic and the chrome decals.

In hindsight I should have gotten the regular version since the HD version is a major pain in the ass in terms of 'perfect' nub removal. :mad:

Thanks mate, but I'll probably only sand them back smooth if I intend on painting them.

My usual process is trimming the nub back and then using a hobby knife to slowly 'skin' it till it's as smooth as possible.

Usually can be done pretty quickly and successfully, but for some reason with this kit due to the hard gloss coating on it, it was a major pain in the behind.

The only pics I attached to that thread I linked to (which non-registered members can't see) are pics of the unbuilt kit - the time and date stamp on the pic is evidence that you haven't started the build before it was supposed to commence.

I seem to recall seeing a flat gold MG version somewhere but for the life of me can't seem to track one down to buy (may have been a custom or ltd ed event only release). :o

Me likes the big a$$ (for a 1/144) HG Kshatriya and am envious of you having it since I'm looking at getting one too :p (if they don't release an MG version soon).

Seeing as you're easing yourself back into Gunpla building, I would recommend probably the MG Sandrock as next to be built over the HG Kshatriya.

Sandrock is just not as repetitious or fiddly to build as Kshatriya even though it's an MG (since I've built one and he's awesome like most of the EW ones) and would be the next progressive step into easing yourself back into the building game.

Besides all those damn Katoki markings (which I know you love ;)), Sandrock is pretty fiddly and repetition free as he doesn't have all the same repeated parts like Kshatriya does (4 x binders w/ associated extending arms and 24 x fiddly funnels :eek: )

Actually, scrap what I said, you sat and built a PG 00 Raiser in one sitting, so you're a sucker for punishment and will suffer for your art and for the love of the build, so you might as well jump in the deep end - Kshatriya FTW! :D

I do likewise too ;) Normally after building something that's given me the sh!ts with nub removal (special coating or darker coloured kits), I tend to build lighter coloured ones so that I don't have to concentrate as much.

Yeah definitely mate, but to be honest, painting's not really my thing - just doing the inner frame has already pi$$ed me off monumentally!

Not even sure if I'll continue painting the exterior, might just slap it all together and maybe do some panel lining and stick the decals on and call it quits.

I've pretty much given up on painting the Zaku - have highlighted some areas with a worn metallic look, added panel lining (using a Sharpie and Zippo lighter fluid) and will add some decals and call it quits.

Painting's definitely not for me - panel lining (using the above technique) though, is something that I think I'll be doing a lot of from here on out since it's quite easy to make them look right and achieve perfect lines. :)

Congrats on the FA Unicorn - maybe just build the weapons and attachments and put them on the existing Unicorn you have?

Personally I think the red colour highlights on the previous release looks better than the green.

Let me know if you end up doing this and want to hock off your unbuilt MG Unicorn from this kit, I'll gladly take it off your hands since the weapons and attachments don't interest me, but I'm liking the idea of (getting someone to) custom paint up a Unicorn in Titans colours. :D

After panel lining (using a Sharpie and Zippo lighter fluid), painting it and randomly applying decals (from other Gundam kits) to create the appearance of markings, I think I've finished.

It's my first panel lined and painted kit, so I know it's fairly rough and there's plenty of areas for improvement, but I'm fairly happy with the finished product.

It was made up for a group build contest with the theme being 'Ground War Grunts' - hence the dirty and militaristic look of it.

I had the gundam led eyes set already but I only used the bit that holds the led and has the socket for the head ball joint.
As for markings I've put lots of decals on all the outer panels but the inner ones I didn't bother with.

Yeah it was pretty inevitable for a MG Banshee. It's the exact same mold with just a different "V-fin" and the arm mounted weapons. Looks like I'll have to get a 4th version of the mold. X|

MG Buster, Blitz & Aegis... I'm in for all 3, especially for Aegis as I love it's "alt mode" claw ship thing. Buster & Blitz are just awesome and elegantly simple & clean design.

Also, don't forget Real Grade Mk.II! Titan's repaint is a given. :)

Your panel lining is looking sharp. I should look into that but it's extra time I just don't have. Zaku's are plain classics. Now that you are applying ALL decals, your finished kits just shine even more combined with your photographing skills!

Panel lining actually doesn't take that long to do TBH - just gotta get the technique down pat and it's actually quite quick.

I use a 0.4mm Extra Fine Sharpie and then just use cotton buds dipped in Zippo lighter fluid to clean off the excess ink.

Apply more lighter fluid and rub harder if you want the lines to be lighter or you can just leave them dark.

Give it a crack mate. :)

I just might give panel lining a crack with the method you mentioned. I panel lined ages ago straight up with a gundam marker and it didn't look good at all as I wasn't erasing excess marks. Thick panel lines are ugly. I shall experiment with some HG's.

Considering how big the HG version is in waverider mode next to the MG, I can only imagine how big the MG version would be. Unfortunately the MG transformation involves a little lego forming. Although not to the same extent as the HG version which was a total lego former with cheating parts added and robot parts removed.

Delta Plus looks good mate - just not a big fan of his colour scheme (a bit too bland for my liking, like Unicorn).

I've noticed that you're happy to put on all the little marking decals - panel lining with the technique I suggested takes less time than applying all them ;)

Also, just read taht there will be TWO MG Banshee's. One ver.Ka and the other the OVA version. Version Ka will have a blue inner core while the OVA will be orange/gold. While I don't want to get both, it's always nice to display them in each mode together. DAMN you Bandai.

Gelgoog doesn't appeal to me since it's quite ugly - Z'Gok I have in my backlog and will eventually get around to building, but I have another 5 Zaku's to work through first.

Despite how many of them I've built, I definitely have a soft spot for the v2.0 frame and it's by far my favourite MG kit, hence the reason why I don't get bored building so many of them.

Might tackle MG PMX-003 THE-O next as a custom with custom paint since I dislike the baby poo colour he comes in (after I build the 7/11 BearGuy for the gf that I promised her).

As for Banshee, I think the one with the orange/gold inner frame will be sufficient for me, unless the build turns out to be extraordinarily enjoyable. :)

Yeah it's designed to make it adhere properly to the surface (I believe) - some of the other guys spray a flat coat on top of the decals to seal them in.

Light up action? I'm there! I'm not feeling the head sculpt with the extra bits on it but this would look awesome in gunmetal with blue lighting.

Quoting myself:
I found that dry transfers while looking good are harder to apply because there's no margin for error. Though the thing is waterslides definitely go better over paint. It sticks a lot better and air bubbles are easier to get rid of.

Anyway here's how I apply waterslides. You need:
small brush
small dish of water
sheet of plastic
tweezers (Tamiya black coated)
decal solution (I use Mr Mark Softer)
scissors (I used Tamiya decal scissors)
soft cloth

Cut out decal close to design. Dip in water and set on plastic.
When decal is loose use tweezers to slide into place. Use cloth to blot excess water without moving decal.
Brush on decal solution making sure to get rid of air bubbles. You only have a very short period to do this, any more and it will destroy the decal.
Leave to dry, preferably overnight.

I might invest in this Mark Softer thing as I bought a water slide decals for some kits but didn't want to use them yet since my limited experience post application were horrid. My UC Hardgraph 1/32 Core Fighter lost many of its decals already. Now I just have to use the Softer. Thanks for the tips VP and especially gamblor.

I've researched a bit more in this light up business for MG Unicorn Banshee's. Alas, it DOES NOT have an electronic lighting kit inside at all. As VP mentioned, the clear parts have been treated so that under black/UV light they glow. Otherwise it's a massive conversion job to incorporate a battery compartment, lights and all those wires through the inner frame of a dense Master Grade. Not to mention it would have bumped the price up by 20-30%

Dunno where the other builders are. There wasn't much to begin with. I know blackie builds and afew others.

Bearguy's are great, I've seen those customs and almost made me want to custom one. Then reality set in and realised 2 things. 1. I'll end up terrible at customizing and it will just look wrong. Or 2. I'll end up doing a great job and love the process that I'll end up making every gunpla I make painted up and customized. I don't want to take either route because time is a commodity and I'll never get through my backlog if I have to spend 10 times the time to paint etc. So no custom Bearguy for me. Just regular brown.

The Buster Gundam is just a repaint with a new piece for a stand and came with a bonus effect part that is way too heavy for the kit. It's meant to be a smoke trail coming out of the tip but it doesn't stay on and if it does it will just tip the mech over.

Buster did show how far HG kits have come though. This was one of the first SEED HG's which was when HG's started to really become more sophisticated and intricate, but still shows some age with simpler sculpted detail, easy build and parts that should have used coloured parts instead of a decal. In this instance the cheeks have orange decals. Compared to newer HG's like the 00 and Unicorn line, these kits have come a long way in engineering.

HG Age-1 was ok. It felt similar to the 00 HG engineering with a couple of new surprises here and there but nothing to make you go WOW like some of the Unicorn HG's do. What's even more impressive is how good the First Grade (or AG as they call it for this series) Age-1 Normal is. In case you are wondering, it's the one on the right in my pic above. The kit looks that good for a 5 minute build with many colours and no decals. I did cheat and used a marker to paint the knees black. Although, note that the legs are static. The only articulation is the pivot on the shoulders and head. Still, it's great that they can achieve that look in one standard HG size plate.

My flatmate did a HG 1/144 Geara Zulu yesterday. Looks good, but I still like the Zee Zulu better.
