View Full Version : Transformers Infiltrating Your Life

Today I was talking to a year 8 class about what the different letters for each class are meant to stand for. One kid apparently said that 8M stood for "8 Manchester United" so we were talking about what their class, 8T, could stand for. Everyone was stumped for a while... I was trying to think of a football team name start with T... couldn't think of any (even now the only one that comes to mind is Trinidad and Tobago).

Then one girl yelled out, "We're 8 Transformers!" Gold. :D

Last week a year 11 boy came up to me and told me that I'd "corrupted" his little brother because over the last Xmas/NY holiday break his brother wanted to buy a certain Transformer and their family spent days scouring shops looking for it and eventually could never find it. I just said, "eBay." :)

everyone in WA has tf and metallica tshirts, one guy at uni had a ko soundwave shirt that said he was an autobot. The guy wearing it didnt seem to care about the wrong info his shirt was sending out

I've been noticing loads of people with shirts depicting the faction insignias, mostly Decepticons. I saw one man with a blue shirt with Grimlock on it (incidentally I'd just seen a dinosaur exhibit at the museum). Once I saw a car which had Decepticon insignias on the windows. That is the only reason I want a car now.

Oh, and once I accidentally called my dog Grimlock, even though the two are nothing alike.

I would have given warning but I was worried there'd be an embarassing shot of me. There wasn't, but my bright blue shirt made me stand out in the crowd shots.

I saw a car on the way home tonight at one of the train stations. It was a four wheel drive that looked like a '74 version of Movie Ratchet with an Autobot symbol on the back window. It wasn't Ratchet though because there was a Decepticon symbol on the window of the other side.

Have to give it another watch through. Lucky for you Ross Noble is the funniest man alive.

I'd like to know where people are getting all these Transformers shirts from, I have most of the Jay Jays ones and the 2 Big W ones. Is Myer still selling their ones as well?

Not sure if this goes here but I'll post it anyway.

Recently through the magic of facebook I found my best friend from primary school (We will call this fellow W). During primary school W and I were inseperable. In fact the teachers used to dread if one of us was sick because the other would be miserable for the day. This was a true childhood friendship. Like me W loved transformers.

Fast forward to high school. W and I are still best friends and understanding the politics of the high school jungle keep our love of transformers to the weekend as a matter of survival. We both start playing footy for the school and all is still well. Puberty hits, W grows up and out into a muscular good looking young man. I grow up not out (did not gain a kilo seriously) into a lanky akward teenager. I get cut from the footy team beacuse I am too thin. W falls into the popular crowd and even though I tagged along occasionaly I am forgotten. Halfway through year 11 when I leave school he simply gives me a "Alright, see you around" Our bestest friendship had turned into a casual "hey". A sad story.

Back to present day W makes me a friend on facebook. A few high school classmates have made me a friend (including my high school crush:o) I notice that with an odd exception alot of them haven't changed. They still change with the trends including W (and this finally brings me to my point) who has the usual trendy things listed under favourite movies/music/television. At the bottom of that he writes "I also like horror films and when robots change into stuff"

He still can not admit he likes transformers. Even though this guy was such a close friend of mine I can't help but be a little dissapointed that he hasn't been able to shrug off the high school politics after all these years:(

I don't want to defend it but I can certainly understand it. It's a very hard and high burden to carry. You don't want to be some level but at some point you become some involved and get lost in it. For me, it took me a while to come back to accepting "uncool" things as part of my life. Like TFs. Three years ago I got back into collecting and it was still underwraps for a while. Now I don't outright mention it but neither do I hold it back.

I dont own a car, but I'm a regular on public transport. Despite that, there is a clear sign that transformers have infiltrated my life.

Between North Strathfield and Strathfield (NSW) on the Western side of the tracks, there is some building on Railcorp property that has a painted mural on it of a group of victorian styled terrace houses.

I swear that there is bluish looking one that resembles Frenzy/Rumble's head. I first realised this ages ago, and now I cant stop seeing it!

my mate and I were actually discussing it afterwards when we caught up later that really the AFL is probably distancing itself from letting fans on b/c of potential legal implications. We live in a litigious world and they don't want to run that risk but in the spirit of the game they love that part of it. Demitriou you have to remember played for North back in the day and he knows what a feeling it is for all involved. That said though what my mate and I came up with though is that given we stormed the ground last night, next time the AFL is put on notice to have more security and measures in place from a legal point of view. The law of negligence basically requires the AFL to take reasonable steps to prevent possible harm and I think that if legal advisers have been in AFL macguffin's heads then they're probably gonna be in it the next time too so it might mean even more security next time.

But I agree, it certainly by the end of it looked like the security guards knew the whole drill for what would happen if we stormed the ground. I joked on my way to have a pee with one of them and he gave me a wry smile and said, he reckon they put up a fair effort.

Anyone on a TF note, I felt kinda lame for thinking of a TF moment at a crunch moment. I told my mates afterwards and I copped a bit o' slock

Didn't know where else to put this but didn't wantto start a new thread... I lost my TFs last week. From the Wed lunch meet, I picked up TFC06 and a buncha Myclones as well as Ratchet/Ironhide heads. I kept them in a box and then proceeded to head for the train station. Got on the train, switched on my laptop and started doing some work. Then I looked down for my new acquisitions thinking of adding them to the DB while I rode him and to my shock horror they weren't there.

I got off at the next stop and dashed to the other side. I caught the next train in to get back to the station in the City where I thought I left it. Then great ol' public transport got busted down and I sat on a train between Victoria Park and Clifton Hill station for an hour. Anxious and annoyed. The stupid driver kept saying 5 mins, another 5 mins, it should only take another 5 mins and so on. It was pretty damned infuriating. We finally get to the damn city over an hour later to the station and there's no sign of it. I ask customer service both sides if anyone saw anything and they replied no. I backtracked to my comic shop where I'd last visited and surprise surprise the owner says to me before I even ask that he has something that must be mine. And I have no idea how relieved I must've looked.

I'm forgetful often enough these days but this was really pushing it!

Glad it worked out STL. Life is strange like that. They make you worry and worry (hour delay at station) and then some nice person immediately knows it's yours. Bring back some faith to strangers.

TF have definately infiltrated my life. I used to collect mainly Gundam kits (mainly for the building side) but they became dust collectors and far too fragile to play with. Lego have satiated my thirst for building and TF my thirst for robots to fiddle with. Within a year the TF figures have surpassed my Gundam collection (which now dumped carelessly in boxes) and take precedence as TF are actually highly playable due to conversion fun and impressive to display.

Here's a touch of irony - I had to tell off a kid for playing with a Transformer in detention!

I had uniform detention supervision today and I noticed one boy playing with a Happy Meal Animated Ratchet... I don't think he was even aware of what he was playing with.

"Put Ratchet away!"
"What?"
"I said put Ratchet away."
"Put what away?"
"Ratchet. Put Ratchet away."
"Is that its name? What's its name?"
"His name is Ratchet. Now put it away."
"Ratchet? I didn't even know that was its name..." (puts toy away)

Man... had it happened in class or in the playground I might've tried to start up a conversation about Transformers... but as it was in detention I just had to make him put the toy away and sit there quietly for the rest of the half-lunch (I detained him for a few minutes more because he tried talking with someone else in detention).

First time I had to make a choice between my professionalism and my Transfandom and while the former quickly won the irony wasn't lost on me. :D

If Hutch is reading this he should know I'd love the AHM covers on t-shirts.

"Farmer wants a wife" TV show on Ch9, one of the prospective wives is a not-too-shabby dance instructor called Riley. She was wearing a black Decepticon t-shirt. The Farmer should marry her!

Not really sure why I felt compelled to post this here...

The number one search term in February on the website I manage was Soundwave.

I assume this has something to do with that music festival though!

You would have to eat a _lot_ of food if you can't fit one toy on the table. ;) We went to a Vietnamese Restaurant today for lunch - Energon Hot Shot was on the table. Yesterday we had Japanese and Animated Grimlock was on the table. :D

How do you decide who comes to dinner Gok?

It's something I often wrestle with whenever I go outside. I can spend quite some time standing in my TF room trying to quickly decide, often with my wife waiting at the door... I don't take long to get dressed, but I can ages trying to pick a toy to bring! :p

I imagine you have to pick one that matches your outfit for the evening.

Oh yeah, when you're carrying a TF around with you and to tea, the last thing you want is for it to look out of place... :p

You know Paulbot, I almost wore my Soundwave (TF) shirt to Soundwave (festival). Which btw, was an awesome festival :D

As for your "bringing a toy" to dinner thing Gok. I seem to remember growing out of that when I was about 6 and my parents told me that it wasn't appropriate. Why keep doing it? Why doesn't your wife mind? Don't take that offensively I just think it's a little odd.

No offence taken. :) My parents told me that I was too old for Transformers practically the moment I started collecting them. 'Sif I'd stop now.

To me, my passion for Transformers has become kind of tribalistic - akin to the way some people barrack for their sports teams. For a long time, I was happy to just wear TF clothes a lot. When I was a university student I often brought a TF toy with me every day on campus.

Here's me playing with Transformers at the Keith Burrows building (http://www.venuesandevents.unsw.edu.au/venues/theatres/KBT.html) foyer.
http://www.geocities.com/planetsabretron/photo_setup.jpg

After I graduated I kinda toned down a while - content to simply be seen with TF clothes and just occasionally bringing a TF with me (usually when I'm going to be meeting another Transfan). But ever since the live action movie came out Transformers has become chic and mainstream... so now we see people wearing TF clothes and symbols on their cars, but it doesn't mean that they're necessarily real fans (yeah, the definition of "fan" is subjective, I know). So now I carry a TF toy almost everywhere I go, even if I'm not going to be meeting any TF fans. Just earlier tonight my wife and I went out for dinner - I brought Fizzle with me. ;)

To me, it marks me as a true TF fan. You don't have to be a TF fan to wear TF clothes and have TF logos on your car these days - but I think if you actually collect and play with the toys, then yeah, you're a fan. Basically, it makes me stand out as a "true" fan and not just another schmuck in a TF shirt.

I've always worn my TF hat to work - which people see me wearing on the way to the staffroom and if I'm outdoors for sport. I now wear TF belts. The kids have been noticing it and think it's cool. One of my colleagues noticed it just this afternoon. As we were debriefing at the end of the day, one of them pointed at me and yelled out, "He's wearing a Transformers belt!" and started laughing. :) I also carry all my stationery in a TF pencil case too.

As for my wife, she doesn't mind... most of the time. :p She gets more frustrated when I'm taking too long trying to choose which toy to bring, or when I freak out realising that I've left the house without a toy (and tells me NOT to turn around and go back home for one :p). She gets a bit embarrassed when I play with my toy in crowded public places (I don’t do that often, I usually just hold the toy in my hand)

It's funny... if I displayed this level of tribalistic passion for a sports team - wearing that team's clothes all the time, having their logo on my car, carrying a ball with their logo on me etc.; people would recognise I'm a fan but not think that I'm odd or strange. But when I do it for a toyline then suddenly it's "weird."

I had a year 10 class today and I didn't have the class roll so I passed around a piece of paper and told them all to write their names on it. I also specifically said, "No fake names." In spite of this the kids wrote the following names:

OPTIMUS PRIME
Megatron
CHUCK NORRIS

In school, whenever there's talk of something combining or merging, I immediately think "into Devastator!". Or Bruticus.
