DesignPrime

Hi All

I am the key designer for the TF apparel at Jay Jay's and am working on a new Gen 1 range at the moment. It would be great to get some thoughts or ideas from you all about what/who you would like to see on tees. (i.e. robot format, vehicle format etc)

Cheers
:)

My list:

-Grimlock wrecking the place in dino mode
-Soundwave and his minions off to fight
-Devestator wrecking up the place
-Shockwave in gun mode
-Jetfire flying across

Blackie, there's already been a Soundwave/cassettes shirt.

My only suggestion: avoid Optimus Prime in favour of something more obscure... so that the focus moves to the Autobot/Decepticon logo and the Transformers theme rather than just the character. The Soundwave shirt I just mentioned is the sort of thing I'm talking about - he's still a character recognisable as a Transformer to many people, but the shirt ends up being "Transformers" rather than "Soundwave".

Thanks for the thoughts, i forgot to mention that due to the style guide restrictions we can only use the following individual characters:

Autobots: Prime, BB, Jazz, Hotrod, Grimlock
Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave, Devastator

What does everyone think of some tees that feature original cover art from the comics?

Trevor Hutchison's All Hail Megatron covers would be great, particular 2 and 9 and 12 without the "All Hail Megatron text"

I've always wanted a Devastator T-shirt with the text "Prepare for extermination!"

I reckon this http://www.planetvideo.com.au/blog/2009/04/25/ahm5wallpaper.jpg on a black shirt, or this http://www.seibertron.com/images/news/gfx/1207608158_FocusOnMegsCVR1+LoRez.jpg on a white shirt would look superb. That or anything from alex milne's deviantart http://markerguru.deviantart.com/

I reckon his pinups would look good as shirts too (see links below for a few of them)

So there can never, ever, ever be a female Transformer Jayjays item of clothing for all of infinity???
That make Dig Dig sad.:(
Is there any way this horrible state of affairs can be made right? I mean you're missing a potential 51% of the marketplace with boy only designs.
Who's in charge around here? Take me to your leader!

Ok comic designs as tees...hmmmm. Do you mean the entire cover art of a G1 comic just copied onto a tee? If that's the idea then no...don't think it would work well.

Unfortunately because Hasbro are such control freaks we can't use anything that is not genuine certified art from them, which is crapola because there are mountains of superb art out there (some looks better than original)... hense the limited range of characters.

Are there preferences for actual colours of tees?

I'd recommend going for greys, blues, red (even yellow) fabrics over black/white. Cheaper black cottons can tend to fade fairly quickly. Cheaper whites can end up a little yellowed without actually staining. Since you've already mentioned that you're limited by licensing costs, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with slightly lesser materials to fit into the desired price.

The darker grey JayJays has used for some shirts (the Car Voltron shirt comes to mind) is more interesting that the standard grey cotton you often see on shirts, but won't suffer the fading of black cotton.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll take it all on board with the current range that is being worked on. Who know's once Hasbro have had their input and we have gone through the approvals process I might be able to let the members of this website get an exclusive preview of what's to come???? :D

I would buy the exact opposite of this. :)

I wouldn't touch anything with Pat Lee herpe... um... Dreamwave art, but any original Marvel art would be very tempting. And I agree with Paulbot - any IDW art by Trevor Hutchison would be perfect.

The darker grey one is good, I got a Optimus one and Black Lion from Voltron on another, and they look good. Mind you I got them ages ago now, but they are still cool.

Darker blues and reds I would wear, not a big fan of the brighter colours. Suppose that comes from being a metalhead :D

Even black shirts with good black cottons tend to fade as well. I found a way to slow that down, try not to hang your black shirts outside on the line. Rather hang them inside on one of those collapsable lines. As someone with alot of black shirts, it helps.

hows about this

an awesome ww2 military one where megatron is versing optimus,
megatron is blasting his cannon from the sky while optimus is dogding it and leaping in to punch him and on the top it says "ONE SHALL STAND" and the bottom " ONE SHALL FALL"

another design idea i had was for the sweeps, everyone loves them so how about a design where the sweeps clash their beams together into the words that say SEEKERS

one more idea i had was megatron with his cannon aiming forward and in writing you have " i am ALPHA and OMEGA, the BEGINNING and the END"

some what a refrence to the beast wars fans to so then you havea slightly bigger audience lol

Imagine a Plain Black semi-fit shirt , The shoulder lines and end pipings in White, Character selection - Devastator in his angst pose, below him the caption in white or green like that of the constructicons green as well "Prepare for extermination!". At the back the purple decepticon sigil surrounded in thin white all around the symbol to make it stand from the black. Now that is sexeeee:D

My fiance suggested something cool last night.

Just the words "Transformers" written like on the G1 Tin Boxset.

Another suggestion was to do the "Autobot Matrix" from the G1 cartoon movie, a big picture of it on the chest of the shirt.

My 2 cents.

For easy access we are limited to elements that are available in the authorised style guide, however we do have the ability to contact hasbro US and request extra art (this takes a long time as sometimes it requires teh current TF art team to re-draw from scratch). If you scan and post images I can at least go through the files and see what we have that is as close as possible to your ideas!

Most of the cover art is recreations of 1984 volumes, but we also have a suite of cold war style "OBEY" Transformers art that we can use, this is pretty dark and has a real war flavour to it...

Thanks for these references they are great, however I have just found out from Hasbro, they they can't release Marvel imagery as a different licensor owns the rights to the entire Marvel back catalogue..... They have what appears to be some what of a corporate horn lock going on???? Sorry guys!

Most of the cover art is recreations of 1984 volumes, but we also have a suite of cold war style "OBEY" Transformers art that we can use, this is pretty dark and has a real war flavour to it...

Do they look like some of the more propaganda style ones on this page? Cheers.

My fiance suggested something cool last night.

Just the words "Transformers" written like on the G1 Tin Boxset.

Perhaps a shirt that showed the evolution of the Transformers brandmark?

I'll be happy with any designs in a ladies cut. Honestly the recent rainbow coloured decepticon logo for the ladies cut didn't work for me. ;) I still bought all the Mens designs - thankfully the XS fits nicely but the hoodies in S are still too big. I remember you all used to do them in XS as well but now it seems S is the smallest.

G1 style is good for me but if you can get the Cybertron artworks too, that would be nice. But otherwise G1 comic covers sounds real good too! :)

I only design for the men's side of the business, however I am trying to secure some images of Elita One, Firestar, Moonracer, Arcee, Chromia etc to show the girls side of the business... This is Hasbro we are talking about though so don't hold your breath!!!

Id suggest more G1 toy box/package images like the Megatron one you used to have.

Maybe just a selection from the first 2 years toys. Even if you were to reissue the Megatron id be happy, I only ever found it in small. :(

That and actual cartoon/era (or marvelcomic) images.

I'm not really into the newer G1 themed stuff (like the new comics) and personally as someone who was a kid in the 80's I find, images like that on clothing very disappointing. :(

Well I did scan my drawings so I can post it, but they were just general templates.:o Sorry i couldn't elaborate on background art stuff I mentioned there (e.g. circuit board effect) have you had a look at it?:o it post # 27 of the thread. Unfortunately I dont have specifics on the artwork to put more of templates and shirt style but I guess youve got that covered, just need the artworks to put.

I'm really liking the images of designs put up here.

One more I can think of - remember that scene in TFTM where Devastator is breaking into Autobot City by inserting his fingers in the wall and peeling it back, and the camera shows the inside of the wall as he comes through? That as a screencap could be pretty neat. The original interior could even be optionally removed and replaced with something else for him to tear his way through on his way out of the T-shirt.

I'd like to see ways of expanding the art which could be used, though. While it's entirely possible for us to mix up our own personal take on the Transformers-related images we'd want to see on a T-shirt, and then have that printed onto not-for-profit apparel by any number of companies, I think many of us would really appreciate the chance to order a more obscure, yet still official, tee.

I'm thinking a database of official art and a T-shirt generator site. Making the preapproved, mass produced designs a couple of bucks cheaper than the custom options would skew buyers towards them, while still profitably capturing the demographic who want something other than the usual fare.

There could even be regular updates of the art database as Hasbro approved/released/created more official images. I'm fairly sure, for example, that there's plenty of Transformers:Animated art which would be right at home on clothing.

I will see if I can get some of it to a small enough file size to upload and show for comments. Ahh, I get you. It's Hasbro's stock licensing artwork, like all of those G1 portraits by Don Figueroa you've been using on your shirts and on other licensed merchandise.

If anybody is wondering what these war propaganda posters look like, they're available as unlockable galleries on the Revenge of the Fallen video game (Xbox 360/PS3/PC).

i was looking at some of the 'all hail megatron' comic cover art and some of that or art along the same style, i think would look quite good on a shirt.

alot of people will wear the autobot/decepticon faction symbols but not much else that is available. perhaps we need art that is more suited to the age group of the collecters [20's and 30's correct me if im wrong] and no so much the stuff for smaller children

just a thought

GoktimusPrime

I think all the current jayjay's TF stuff _is_ aimed at older fans (not necessarily collectors though). There are TF children's clothes available at stores like Kmart and Big W etc - which I also wish they would make in adult sizes!

I would like to see more collector-centric shirts like clothes with images from TF series _other_ than G1, but perhaps it wouldn't sell well for jayjay's demographics. Madman has stuff like Beast Wars logo clothes which I'd like to get.
