From the hints given in the last paragraph, it seems that he stepped on a Pinkimus Prime 25th Anniversary reissue not a vintage 1984 figure (He would be dead now if it were vintage).
I could fix it :)

Poor Tony. I recognised it as Universe reissue Prime by it's slightly off colours. But disregarding people who (apparently) cared more for the monetary worth of the toy (which, as we know, isn't worth a lot), I reckon people were more offended by him stepping on an icon of their childhoods.
Tony Martin still rocks, in my opinion, and like he, I am a big fan of all things Shaun Micallef.

Firstly, I personally don't like TBYG. I saw it for the first time last night and changed the channel half way through thinking how can anyone enjoy this crap. Secondly, I saw this on the ad and saying I did not enjoy it is an understatement.

And that's exactly what has really pissed off a lot of people.
Pinkimus is a worthless piece of crap reissue (if you can call him that since he is so crappily made) BUT he is still an Optimus Prime.

One less Pinkimus = fine by me (you'd think most older TF fans would be used to people 'stepping on their childhood' by now), though Tony points out that fans should know the 'going rate for an OP' but seems to think it's the real deal - bit of a difference $-wise between reissues and old-school, and that holds true for any collectible hobby.
Still (IMO) a lame 'joke' for a lame show, how I miss the glorious days of Full Frontal.:(
EDIT - scrap that, watching his face when it split in 2 was pretty funny.

For one thing, he wasn't forced to repeatedly play characters (though I do love David McGhan's docos and Roger Explosion).
Micallef's comments, asides and personality is pretty much why I watch TAYG. He reminds me of John Cleese in a way.

No, this is a very specific incident while the other is the show in general. This thread is actually good because this incident has potential to derail the other thread and make it about one thing rather than TF references in the show in general.

Call me crazy here but I don't think there's a big deal to be had here people. Each person can do what they want with their figures. Couple of issues here:
A) Its televised entertainment for the regular public (ie not adult Transformer collectors)
B) He was a member of the baby boomers, who are the least likely to recognize the figure for what it is.
I mean, does it matter? Even if it was an original G1 prime, as big a shame as it would be it isn't worth this level of discussion or concern :\

If it were a vintage G1 Prime it would be one less in the world for future generations to enjoy.

Tony's right that he's not a baby boomer. The "Baby Boom" was in the decade following WWII, in Australia. Tony was born in 1964. In New Zealand.
For some reason Australia presently has this fascination with these generation labels. Babies born in Tony's era don't fit into "Baby Boomers" or "Generation X". The only generation he is part of is the D-Generation.
TBH, I couldn't care less what happens to a Pinkimus on TV. It's not my possession, so it's of no consequence to me.

Tony's right that he's not a baby boomer. The "Baby Boom" was in the decade following WWII, in Australia. Tony was born in 1964. In New Zealand. The definition of "Baby Boomer" changes ALL the time though!
One easy way to remember the years (of when Baby Boomers are born) is supposedly to reverse the numbers... ie 46-64. So, technically, he is a Baby Boomer if you go by that timeline.
The only generation he is part of is the D-Generation.Agreed! :D

It changes depending on the context. The Australian boom didn't last quite as long as the US boom. The Baby Boom didn't hit every developed country, since some weren't as involved in WWII (or at all in some cases, such as Switzerland, Sweden). But yeah. Tony's pretty much at the extreme end of what could be considered the boom, but his birth & childhood in NZ pretty much rules him out of the Australian Baby Boom.
Certainly he's too old to have been into Transformers as a kid, which is I guess the relevent aspect here.

Seriously, these people are clueless. Anyone who claims to be knowledgeable on the issue and yet thinks that any G1 Optimus Prime is so valuable that damaging one is worth blowing this non-issue up to this proportion are the stupid ones, not the people who are just too ignorant to know what it was. My only thought on this is that it's so obviously a 2009 Pinkimus that I know if I was on that programme I might have been hesitant to put it in the eighties just in case it was a trick question and they said that the toy was actually released in the noughties. :)

I saw this and was a bit disappointed, but then I kind of feel the same way about people who cannibalise figures to make a custom. The show destroyed a Transformer for entertainment, but so do many collectors for customs, kitbashes and so on.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy seeing the work of customisers, and appreciate the creativity that went into them, but I still feel that there is something sad about destroying a figure, for whatever the reason.

It wasn't mine, nor was it anyone elses here. It belonged to whatever station played the show, and they can put it at whatever risk and do whatever they want with it.
That is a part of our very own toys too, we can do whatever we want with them.

I think Tony summed it up very nicely in that article you posted...
All this over a seventy-dollar toy abundantly available at any shopping centre? If these people were such big fans, wouldn’t they have known the going rate for an Optimus Prime? Then I realised that, like me, Generation X hasn’t bothered to keep up with developments down at Toys ‘R’ Us. Their idea of Transformers is forever stalled back in the early nineties.
Although late eighties is probably more correct than early nineties (Action Masters are not G1 for instance :p)
Why two threads needed to be devoted to complaints about the destruction of Pinkimus, when there is another thread devoted to saying how crap the toy is? I'll never know!
