Oh my, that sucks.

They have completly destroyed what made the mold Starscream in the first place.

Its got Red Decepticon symbols so I am guessing that this is a stolen from factory Botcon 08 'Heroic Decepticon' Starscream.

So far Prime and Starscream here are very dissapointing as Prime looks like Motor master and Screamer obviously like Jetfire.

Gold Bug is the only good one so far.

Another terrible repaint :(

If only the Botcon figure repaint people would just listen to the Fandom every once in a while & repaint some Cybertron/Classics car molds into something like this http://plasticcrack.net/archives/2007/10/hes_very_menasory#more instead of the drivel they're pumping out this year

Or something like this http://www.film-exposed.com/images/tfw2005/liokaiser/JTAURUS.JPG
Now those two would really get TF people making a mess on themselves

+1 on the Goldbug.

Not overly impressed with the figure, it does look tacky, so I wont be at all surprised if it turns out this was some KO or fan made repaint.

Looks pretty bad, very knock off like.
Pity for the people who want to buy the set.

Are you guys serious?

It's in Hong Kong! It's just a knock-off! Or at the very least a fan repaint.

I wouldn't be too worried yet... :P. It's not on the Botcon site and is therefore not official.

The only reason I posted it was b/c TFW2005 frontpaged it. It's good enough for me if they put it up as they are widely considered reliable. Otherwise, I would've been more suspicious.

I actually quite like it - as opposed to the other BotCon releases so far this year (Jazz is ok).

I'm with you. I like the Jetfire colours and I like the mould.

However, my gripe is that it's supposed to be Starscream. They should at least have preserved the black head and yellow cockpit. See, the plot could've been that heroic Starscream watched his best mate Skyfire perish at the hands of the Autobots and has since sworn to fight for his memory hence the choice of colours.

The problem is that they need to keep it Starscream somehow. The blackhead and the yellow cockpit are vital in my opinion. His colours as we see there destroy the entire vibe of the boxset. It's like Grimlock's repaint too. It really is just Trypticon. Might as well have made him a Decepticon.

So yeah, when I get him from my loose set Starscream will most likely get Autobot stickers instead and become Cybertronian Skyfire.

dose this mean, with the evil autobots and heroic dcons, are there more then one boxed set, do we have to buy two separate sets here or is it just one big mother load?

From my understanding the set consists of:

Optimus
Goldbug
Jazz
Grimlock
Starscream

The attendee figures include: Megatron, 1?, 2?,3? plus the freebie figure that all attendees get = 4?

So there's 4 unknowns at this moment.

Megatron is apparently Energon Megatron being repainted. For the life of me that's a terrible decision. Horrible scale and all. It seems strange too b/c that means this year's assortments contains larger figures than previous years.

22nd February 2008, 02:43 PM
hmm, thats weird, why would you make a heap of "Evil Autobots" and only one "Heroic Dcon"? It makes no sence. And if most of the figures are classed as Classics then why throw in random un classic line molds?

GoktimusPrime
22nd February 2008, 03:04 PM
I can actually appreciate this repaint from the theme that they're doing with this year's BotCon set - Heroic Decepticons and Evil Autobots. And Starscream in Jetfire's colours does make sense considering the cartoon origins of Starscream and Jetfire (Skyfire) as scientists on Cybertron until Starscream eventually abandoned his quest for knowledge and became a warrior instead. In the reverse goatee universe, it would seem that Starscream has stayed on his original path as a scientist - and presumably it is Jetfire who would have become an evil warrior (but I doubt they'd do an evil Classics Jetfire repaint considering that they've already repainted the CL Jetfire mould as Dreadwind... it'd be doable though).

The Voyager Cybertron/Galaxy Force Starscream mould is a pretty nice mould when done with good colours (re: Galaxy Force Starscream). IMO it's a better War Within Starscream toy than Titanium Series War Within Starscream!

I'd be surprised if this was indeed the BotCon starscream toy, because I was under the impression that they were using the Armada Starscream mould, due to it being mentioned in the BotCon brochure that the box set contains 'Good Guys Starscream and Minicon Razorclaw'. That could just mean the Classics tiger coloured as Gen1 Razorclaw to go with any Starscream, but it is still called a 'five figure set', which suggests that the Minicon belongs to Starscream like the Armada toys did. I suppose if the Cybertron Starscream toy has a Minicon port on it, it would count.
Otherwise, I think it is more likely that this figure is indeed Jetfire, and is in one of the two-pack sets sold at the convention.

Also, if Megatron ends up being the free attendee figure, it won't be bigger than a deluxe. If so, I would expect it to be the Classics 2-pack Megatron (which sucks as a toy). If it is a larger Megatron recolour, it will be sold as one of the 2-pack sets at the convention.

I do feel that it's tougher challenge to put together another themed set that's as good as the last two years when you're focusing on an alt universe that doesn't exist yet and only the niche of Botcon set holders will ever know about. The past 2 years had underlying premises universal to the whole G1 concept.

To be honest, why can't they do the combiner teams, without the combining. Those would still be loved irrespective of the fact of wheter they combine. Teams like the Stunticons and Combaticons have range of figs they're existing designs could be based on as long as you change colour and head mould.

Really dislike the look of the repaint, it's a nice mold, but those colours do it no justice. Still it looks nicer than the ebay version we saw earlier, less KO-ey.

This year's overall Botcon set is just plain garbage. When you look at the coolness of last year's set, it just makes you realise that the designers had to give us a mediocre set - just to balance it out.

I can definitely see the Botcon people being stuck with a tonne of these sets for years to come...

As of today (according to a US fan board), they have sold out of all the boxed sets.
The financial return of last year's set probably prompted many toy scalpers to buy up this year's set just in case it was anywhere near as good.
The interest in BotCon toys is now so huge, it wouldn't be difficult to move this year's toys on the second hand market, even at what it cost the toy dealers. After all, there will still only be between 1500-2000 of each figure in the world.

I agree Griffin. Despite the set's mediocrity, there will still be interest in the secondhand market. More so because of the recognisable names used. I'm assuming that there's going to be a lot of new Transformers collectors now thanks to the movie, so interest will be high at least for Optimus, Megatron, Starscream and Jazz. So people who bought the set and feel disappointed can still at the very least, get back what they paid for.

I'm in the same boat that I ordered the set, but I'm just not feeling it. I'll wait until it comes in and then maybe just get rid of the ones I don't want.

Oh no! That Starscream is a bit plain. I like the Galaxy Force Starscream toy, but I have one already. Those colours just aren't right.....

Honestly, I appreciate the fact they realised "Voyager" Prime really isn't a centrepiece of this set, he really isn't big enough.

Plus another use of the Classics seekers? I think not.

Tetsuwan Convoy
27th February 2008, 12:10 AM
I agree, but I do think they could have done better with the colours. I understand that he is a good guy now, but all that white is a bit blurgh! Maybe they should have included Megatron in the set and made Starscream the pick up piece.
