"I, Mixmaster, join you today in a footnote to the history of our great nation.

One score and five years ago, the first Transformers were being freed from the manacles of packaging. But twenty-five years later, we Cybertronians are still not free. A quarter of a century later, the lives of first and second generation Transformers are lived out in the shadowy bonds of plastic, cardboard and polystyrene. And now a secondary acrylic cell threatens to imprison us for eternity. Too long have we atrophied in non-biodegradeable prisons and the unrighteous bonds of plastic bubbles and boards of card.

But two thousand and nine is not an end but a beginning. We refuse to believe that the fuel pumps in human chest cavities have ceased to function. Just today, after twenty-five years trapped in a bubble as a cement mixer, my human emancipated me. After half-a-half-a-century, I can now swing my arms in a full eighteen-score degree range of articulation. I can stretch my single leg, the way Primus intended.

So, humans, whenever you free a Generation 1 or G2 Transformer from his bondage, I urge you to post in this thread. This thread that I have begun. A thread that I hope will grow into a string and from there to a rope until it is a massive cable of liberation. I want to hear vintage Transformers unsilenced. I want to hear robotic voices cemented in unison across Australia and New Zealand, crying 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank Primus Almighty, we are free at last!'"

To summarise what Mixmaster has so ably stated, the purpose of this thread is for people to post about which G1 and G2 toys they have liberated from MISB or MOSC status. (Apparently Mixmaster only cares to hear about the freedom of G1 and G2 toys for some biased reason,) People are welcome to post before and after photos or just leave a message in the thread, letting Mixmaster know which first and second generation toys you have freed. He also told me to type that I am writing this of my own free will and do not have the barrel of a laser pistol pointed at my head. No, don't type that bit. Oh, sorry.

Thus, I'm writing to say that my vintage 1984 Mixmaster escaped was liberated today. Anyone else?

Well you almost opened Countdown last week - you got to put his stickers on and put him together anyway. And I know Mixmaster is universally acknowledged as a 1985 toy, but his packaging says 1984 so I thought maybe he'd been trapped in there since then. :)

Well these are not newly liberated... but still somewhat new - within the month of August after years of being in their cardbacking case.... G2 - I did save the packaging as roller wanted em

My thoughts exactly....

I dont collect MISB G1 but if i ever did I would never open 1. I mean whats the point of paying the kinda money they demand just to be the 1st person to touch the toy since packaged when u can buy a loose toy for much much less for the same enjoyment the certain toy gives...

But in saying that all the newer toys that I buy I dont open and are all MISB apart from 2 or 3 from the universe 2.0 line. So bummer yes I 'll never get to play with some of them unless I find some cheaper ones down the line...

I really wanna open ROTF Ravage, Twins and Mixmaster but I cant bring myself to do it and they arent even 1 year old let alone 25...

But Sky Shadow big uppps to you for having the courage to open that bad boy... Hope he didnt cost you toooo much dude

Great work, Gutsman and Liege: Mixmaster is proud of you both.

I dont collect MISB G1 but if i ever did I would never open 1. I mean whats the point of paying the kinda money they demand just to be the 1st person to touch the toy since packaged when u can buy a loose toy for much much less for the same enjoyment the certain toy gives...

My problem isn't so much with the enjoyment, but with the disappointment I feel every time I buy a loose toy on eBay that's described as mint, but turns out to be far from it. I'm tired of buying bad quality loose toys on eBay with deceptive and dishonest descriptions, so if I open a sealed toy myself, I know it's mint. I have a really good metaphor for this, but it's probably not appropriate on this all-ages forum. ;) At the moment I want a mintier G1 and G2 collection, and this is one of the ways I can ensure I get it. And if I ever do want to sell them, I don't think I've devalued them too much, as near-mint toys with all packaging and paperwork don't go for too much less than MISP ones.

But Sky Shadow big uppps to you for having the courage to open that bad boy... Hope he didnt cost you toooo much dude

Thanks. :) Back in the 80s, a Mixmaster was the first Transformer I ever opened (equal first with Scavenger), so this one was a bit of nostalgia. Also, these days, (sadly) this is the only way to ensure it's a real Constructicon and not a knockoff. After postage it cost me more than a 2009 ROTF Voyager, less than a Leader. And I would much rather play with him than a ROTF toy any day.

Some more of my recent MISP emancipations:

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/9034/p8140282.jpg

And bonus karma points if anyone opens an AFA graded toy. :)

Eep! I would've used a blade to open those carded G1s to preserve the card at least!

Well you almost opened Countdown last week - you got to put his stickers on and put him together anyway.
True. That was the closest I've come to opening a brand new G1 toy in ages. :)

And I know Mixmaster is universally acknowledged as a 1985 toy, but his packaging says 1984 so I thought maybe he'd been trapped in there since then.
I suspect that 1984 would've been the year that the toy was patented/copyrighted, but it would've actually been manufactured and released in 1985. TF copyright stampage typically displays the previous year of when the toy was actually released.

I dont collect MISB G1 but if i ever did I would never open 1. I mean whats the point of paying the kinda money they demand just to be the 1st person to touch the toy since packaged when u can buy a loose toy for much much less for the same enjoyment the certain toy gives...
Depends on the toy. With a lot of G2 toys it's much easier to find complete ones sealed.

But in saying that all the newer toys that I buy I dont open and are all MISB apart from 2 or 3 from the universe 2.0 line. So bummer yes I 'll never get to play with some of them unless I find some cheaper ones down the line...

Seriously though, why not just keep them MIB and also buy a loose one ? That would look good on display.

liegeprime
29th August 2009, 11:33 AM
but they do look good on display - out of their cardbacks, boxes, plastic cases ;) and about buying a second loose one... erm that would be good for newer TFs as I dont see em fetching the insane prices like the G1's/G2 so you could prolly buy a gazillion (or as your wallet may permit) and display them in every altmode they have including a MISB/C one, but these ones we are opening are hard to acquire nowaadays in proper condition... would be such a shame never to fiddle with them and get them attain they're true purpose for creation - being ... a toy. Albeit since its us adults playing so they wont end up gnarlied with teeth marks or broken uselessly and then discarded as how toddlers or slightly older kids will do. ;)

I'm not a 'display' person (in fact, I don't have any Transformers on display, per se. About six of them happen to be lying around on shelves at the moment, but that's just because I haven't put them away.) I like having mint toys, but because they're Transformers, they can't be truly appreciated while they're locked away in their MISPs. Transformers toys exist in four dimensions and for me, they cannot be fully appreciated unless they can be transformed, which requires them to be out of their packaging.

I'm surprised more people don't do this actually. Hmm... I guess some might freak out if I told them that I hypothetically may have spent about $300 on a C10 MISB of e-Hobby Dimension Exploration Researchers (GoBots) only to open them up this week. (And I don't feel bad about it at all - they're awesome! The crème de la crème of Minibots.)

Sadly, yes. Unfortunately, one problem with releasing MISP Transformers into the world is that they want to experience all the things they've missed while imprisoned. Pathfinder has already lapsed into energonolism. Fortunately, since this photo was taken, Pathfinder has joined Energonolics Anonymous and is now on the fourth step of the twelve-step program. ;)

All of my apparent liberations sounds like default type liberations compared to you Sky Shadow. I mostly liberated them because I needed to verify their MISB status and didn't have much choice.

I liberated this in 2004, right in front of the shop-owner to verify his claims of MISB in order to justify what I'm paying. Found that he was an honest guy.

i had to do that with a MISB GI joe vehicle once cos i didnt want to be paying for a resealed box filled with crap and get conned...

However, i would never ever open a vintage MISB of MOSC G1/G2 transformer just for the enjoyment of freshness. logic circuits would never allow for it. If the box or packaging itself was "mint", i would get them graded and buy myself some loose figures to play with.

I'm just not too fussed if the figures are not perfectly mint and untouched cos theres plenty of play and display value in them still.

I also liberated a few Centurions (Max Ray & 2 Jake Rockwells) which were 80's vintage misb... awesome feeling.

Blitz/G2 Ransack has an awesome transformation and gives me a kind of nostalgia, since his partner, Powerdive, was one of the handful of G2 toys I bought as a ki... um... teenager. The only odd thing about this toy is that some of the plastic is kind of... furry? Kind of rough, like it's been sanded. I actually find that sort of thing a bit when opening G2 toys - maybe something about the glue used to seal the packages? Or sunlight? Or maybe lack of quality control didn't just appear out of nowhere in the late 2000s?

They are after all, offical toys from Hasbro?

Agreed - Doubledealer, if you want a genuine Nightbeat, it's a genuine Nightbeat - there's absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's not a knockoff and it was a good price. Lots of us bought Chinese reissues straight off Australian shelves back in the eighties/early nineties (most memorably the bargain Starscreams, Ramjets and Cycloni that glutted the shelves for about $10AU) and none of us now would worry that our toys turned out to be reissues. DD - you really wanted him and were happy before, why should this change things?

Hmm, you guys are right. I really do love him and he is a genuine Hasbro Nightbeat, an unusual one at that! I think I was just shocked initially as I thought I had been mislead by the auction. I'll message the guy back and let him know I'll be hanging onto him. :D Sorry for all the commotion!

Blitz/G2 Ransack has an awesome transformation

Hell yes he does. Blitz doesn't get anywhere near enough love, I adore the way everything flips out and comes back together the other way.

I've had the fuzzy plastic syndrome on my Blitz's as well, no idea what causes it.

Wanted this little fella for quite some time now as I love the idea of a Transformers detective, glad to finally get my hands on one! And before people start crying, I never wanted a MISB Nightbeat (don't believe in keeping them boxed up) but this one just so happened to come along at a price that was better than many MIB/loose Nightbeat's I've seen. :D

Before:

After:

http://i661.photobucket.com/albums/uu332/Doubledealer_83/Transformers/G1/nightbeatbot.jpg

Fantastic toy of a great character. One interesting thing I've noticed with my Nightbeat is his chin is yellow! When google image searching 'G1 Nightbeat' I can only find pictures of him with an orange chin, no pics or anything mentioned about a yellow one anywhere! I think it's kinda cool, he's got a robo-goatie! :D Anyone know if mine is unique?

That came from the guy who was selling 4 of them right with each one numbered individually ??

I thought the price was pretty good too for a MISB Nightbeat...

Good to read its not a KO.

I actually thought of buying a Nightbeat from the same guy when he was down to his last piece. Didn't go it because I realised that it isn't a pure US box and I was not too fond of it. But it clearly is a very nice piece and definitely worth the price. Good stuff!

Nice one Gutsman. :) That versus pack is one of very few Transformers I keep sealed -- but I have the Japanese version loose to play with. The toys are the same, but different packaging, and also the JP version didn't come with the exclusive comic book. So as a result I don't have a copy of that comic to read! (if someone would be kind enough to scan me a copy I'd be really grateful :D)

And if anyone is wondering why I didn't open the Hasbro version and keep the Takara version sealed, it's because I was living in Japan when Beast Wars came out. I got the Hasbro version because my parents bought it as a souvenir for me from the U.S. (I still have the KB toy price sticker on the card!) - so since I ended up with doubles in variant packaging, I decided to keep it sealed. Had I got the Hasbro one first I definitely would've opened it (and not bothered getting the Takara version :p)

I might have kept Diver sealed, but that's cos I have Waverider. If I did't have Waverider I'd open Diver lickety split! :D

But there is a chance that even if I got Diver I'd probably open him anyway, cos there's no window on that box which means I can't even view the toy while it's sealed. And I really would like to see it since it is a slight variation of Waverider.

There is a window, the front is just a flap (probably should have taken a photo with it open as well lol). But the main reason I removed it anyway, was because there was a crack/hole/break/thingy in the window in front of the shell inside the box. I shall take a photo of this as well lol.

Yeah it happens. The uncured resin which sort of sits inside the plastic can express to the surface of the plastic over time. Happened with my Groundbreaker & Bugly, which I got new (but unsealed) a couple of years back. They were water-damaged stock from a warehouse - so never sold but the boxes had been thrown away.

Yep - I opened three MISB Centurion toys over the past two days and each of them had at least one 'sticky' bit that needed cleaning. All the oily parts were ones made from more rubbery, flexible plastics like the white accessories on Diver. Those three parts on Diver (helmet, axe and belt) are specifically notable for discolouration 'liver' spots from the plasticiser leaking out - the stickyness is a related (but less unattractive) condition.

My collection's in various plastic tubs around my house, but every TF I have has been liberated, at least once - I keep the Takra Collection ones in their boxes (mainly because I have alternates to most of them), but they have all breathed fresh air at least once in their lives.....I don't know - I don't buy them for monetary value, or with resale in mind so it doesn't really seem a big deal to me to open them.

Oh dear... I just opened Sea Spray, placed him beside his twin, but the colours are wrong... Now I dunno if I've been KO'd or it's sun faded (the pack isn't). Either way, it sucks to have a "new" Sea Spray less appealing than the oldie =o( Will post pics soon...

*EDIT*

Mmkay, here are pics, the recently liberated is on the left. I also noticed the stickers aren't very foil-like, more like a silk sheen. So is it a cheap KO, or just a bit different because it's from Portugal?

The one you've liberated isn't a knockoff, but it is a 1989-92 Chinese reissue, so the plastic and stickers would be different to a 1985 toy. This page has quite a bit of information about reissue Seaspray: http://highendtfs.com/?q=node/15

Thank you very much for that, a very helpful link =o) So it's a mixed bag of feelings on this one... I feel mildly ripped thinking I had some originals, but they are reissues, but still official, but not as official as I hoped for, but not KO... etc etc etc... Either way, I'm glad they are free now, because if I didn't liberate them, I probably would've assumed they were originals the whole time.

Recently liberated a G2 Roadblock. Didn't take any pictures but (too busy cuttin' that bubble open!). :D Man... old blisters are significantly tougher to slice open than current toys! Normally when I cut open a carded toy my blade just cuts through the blister like a knife through butter... but with older carded toys I gotta do a careful sawing action. And sometimes I end up shifting that whole part of the blister, tearing part of the card anyway. There were a few times where I would cut around the corners, but use scissors to snip along edges to try and minimise card-tearing blister shifting. I guess blisters must harden up with age or something. :/

I'll guarantee you there is a lot less plastic in a modern blister than one from 25 years ago. Materials science keeps advancing and application of solid mechanics gradually makes it's way into packaging design.

Now before I get the predictable responses, yes I did try to trade this for a loose one but no luck. It seems there are more sealed than loose ones floating around. In fact there are two sealed ones on eBay right now, so you are more than welcome to go buy those. ;)

Yeah, except I bet on an individual toy basis, most of your figures sit on a shelf in display more than they are played with. Also, you already have plenty to play with.

Generally, I'd agree with you that vintage stuff should be left as is. If you want a loose Bumblebee for instance then go buy a loose Bumblebee, there are plenty around. Going to the effort of finding and then paying the kidney that a sealed Bumblebee goes for and then opening it I think is silly (but of course people can do what they want with their own money).

Now in the case of G2 Breakdown there just aren't that many loose ones around. As I said earlier I've seen more sealed ones for sale and I did make an attempt to trade for a loose one. I refuse to go along with the notion that sealed collecting takes priority over loose where there aren't that many loose options to begin with. If there ARE plenty of loose options, then yeah, kinda unnecessary to free up more (but I respect their right to do it).

In the case of Breakdown though... he's just a repaint, so for the sake of "playing" with him, doesn't any old Breakdown scratch that itch?

I play with - as a bare minimum - at least one different Transformer toy a day (I have my Animated Activator Soundwave sitting on my desk right now). If I have more time then I'll play with more, especially if I'm doing a proper toy play campaign.

It depends. Does playing with a G1 Sideswipe sate your desire to play with a G2 Sideswipe? I mean, for me G2 toys represent an entirely different period in Transformers canon, so if I want to play with them from the G2 period (e.g. War World, the Swarm etc.) then I'd like to have G2.

You have more than 2500 figures in your collection, so on average, assuming you ensure a fair rotation, each figure gets played with on average of once every 6 years. So yes, your figures sit on a shelf, in display, more than they are played with.

Yes, playing with either G1 or G2 Sideswipe would negate the need for me to play with the other.

Also, using your scenario, there is no in-continuity reason for the colour difference of Sideswipe between G1 and G2, so apart from trying to sell old toys to a new generation, a red Sideswipe fits perfectly well in the G2 world (as seen in the G2 cartoon ;) ). It's not a Bumblebee/Goldbug scenario or golden lagoon/hate plague scenario.

2313 actually (I know, Cybertron Collectors and other magazines quoted me as having 2500... not sure where they got that number from), but yeah, fair point in that it would take me a while to cycle through all of my toys. I've currently got about a dozen figures sprawled all over my toy room from a recent play. :) And there are a handful of figures that have been "retired" as display pieces - these would be toys that have become too frail to withstand play (typically GPS figures). One thing that I love about G1 reissues is that I can "retire" my G1s and play with the reissues.

G2 Breakdown is still in pretty good condition (actually much better condition than my G1 Breakdown), so I'm still fine to keep on playing with it.

For some it might. I used to have a strict "no repaints" rule when I didn't have as much money to collect, but now I enjoy collecting variants.
For me personally, loose collecting takes priority over sealed, I just enjoy them more out of the packaging. I always will try to buy loose instead of opening up a vintage figure though. G2 Breakdown was the exception to the rule, for reasons I stated earlier.
