Today we tell a culinary adventure of a more animalistic nature...

CAN DEVASTATOR EAT A BEAST WARS BASIC?!

It seemed like such a simple thing at first -- but could this adventure lead to the bitter taste of DEFEAT?

Spoilers: Yes it could.

It started simply enough! Could Devastator eat a Beast Wars Basic? Well let's see... what if he had to eat...

One of my small disappointments with the Armada Unicron toy is that he can't eat anything. You can't feed mini-cons to him. It's sad because there's ALL THESE MINI-DUDES in the Armada line... then you have the giant nom-nom-eat-eat toy... and he can't actually eat any of them.

It's one of those situations where you WANT something out of a toy and it doesn't have it for perfectly understandable reasons. Doesn't mean you want it less -- but you can understand, based on the design, why it doesn't have it.

I *LOVE* that rather than giving Devastator's components individual robot modes Hasbro said, "Bugger it, we'll give him PLAY VALUE of a different kind!" IT's awesome. Devvy is definitely gunna end up being one of my all-time favourite TFs.

You can. But it's not remotely as visceral as, say, his planet mode maw being able to devour Mini-cons.

Devastator is totally visceral, totally fun.

Basically, he's pure awesome.

LOL @ this thread. :D Nearly makes me want to buy this toy... nearly. As fun as the gimmick may be, it still doesn't compensate for the lack of individual robot modes. But after seeing this thread I've changed my mind from an "absolute no" to a "maaaaybe if I find it on sale." :p YIPPEE!!! :)

I won't deny it -- this was one of the things I wanted from this thread... to show people just how freakin' awesome Devastator *IS*.

As for the lack of individual robot modes -- I thought the same way. But once you have him in hand you see why he doesn't have them. The vehicle modes are robust and fun -- more fun than individual robots would have been, at least from a kids' perspective -- and the lack of extra transformation keeps his complexity down.

Devvy is effortless to assemble and disassemble and then reassemble. He's the perfect kind of combiner -- one that's FUN to combine. If his components also TF'd into robots that extra step in complexity would probably make him even more expensive, and make him a lot less fun.

So one of the guys over on the allspark asked me a little question about Devastator:

Hey Boltax, does Devastor pull off any really good poses on all fours that make him look threatening? Like a "sucking up the sand" pose? With his short little legs, he just always looks so goofy to me standing up. Does he have the head/neck articulation for it? Is there any way for his head to not lay so far back on his shoulders? I think these are the big parts that bug me about him...

This is actually one of the more reasonable and intelligent questions/criticisms I've heard of the toy. Yes there is a problem with the fact that he's not designed after the four-legged stance of the movie, he's given a more crouched trollish stance. I don't mind it one bit. He looks great -- but I could imagine it could bother some.

So can he effect a crouched on all fours stance?

Well... here's his usual stance. Forgive the photography -- it's late in the day so I don't have very good lighting.

Basically, his usual pose is a troll-like crouch, posed in front of a pile of toys waiting to be stood up in a display and my Doctor Who collection. Stupid Doctor Who DVDs got in the way of a lot of these shots.

You'll notice that Devvy has his mouth locked open in this pose -- this elevates his head, bringing his eyeline up.

Just for fun here he is with his jaw unlocked and... ehnnn... chasing a Cyberjet.

Is it possible for Devastator to assume a crouched pose and still be menacing? Well, that is a question -- you'd think it would be easy, but it's not. I found that I had to mis-transform one of his arms a bit to get decent support out of that hand and to bend his back legs really far back. With his jaw locked in place his head is high enough that he's still looking at you and still really menacing. It's pretty good.

In this pose Devvy is too big for the little table I use for these photographs -- he's just hanging off the edges of it. He absolutely TOWERS over that poor Cyberjet.

If you don't pose him by mis-transforming a few of his parts (Which honestly, you wouldn't really notice), his crouched pose looks a little bit more like this:

So where do you even BEGIN To tackle such an insanely huge topic? Seriously man... how do you do it? Well fortunately Popular Culture can be easily divided into three simple categories. We all know them well -- the three categories of pop culture are ingrained into us:

Yeah... suddenly Devastator feels reeeaaal puny. It's okay Devvie. Fortress Maximus may be tall, but he has a really small... lift control handle. ;) And we all know that Devvie has a massive pair which he shamelessly exhibited all over the big screen (even at IMAX!)
