Custom number three. This was my first time using apoxie sculpt and I have to say this stuff is fantastic. Easy to carve and file plus it holds edges really well and doesn't chip like other putties.

I gave it a bath of alcohol overnight then polished the hell out of it with Finishers compound (http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=48_62&products_id=1053).
Note don't leave it in the alcohol for more than a day or you'll destroy clear plastic.

Hey dude, your work looks promising as usual...

just a few questions:
-is that finishing set better than the Mr Hobby or tamiya polishing products?
-which particular brand of alcohol do you use (isoproyl/isocol/rubbing alcohol/nail polish remover etc....) and what concentrations do you recommend??

Based on the Jazz Gamblor brought the the fair - the pictures of his paint jobs don't do it justice. It looks really good and professionally finished.

Thanks mate. I haven't tried the Mr Hobby or Tamiya stuff other than the old discontinued one step polish. I've heard that the new Tamiya Finish compound is good but pricey. I do like the Finishers stuff though. I've used it for this (http://home.exetel.com.au/leducly/images/P1010902.jpg).
The alcohol is ordinary 99% isopropyl I found at a hardware store.

I can't get rid of that grain that appears on metallic paints but you don't really see in person.

How ironic... the Finishers Compound Set is Finished.
Cant seem to find a store that still has them in stock... :(
hmm... looks like tamiya it is then...
btw, i've tried 99% isopropyl before and the only thing i found it useful was for cleaning my paint brushes and cleaning off grime...
had absolutely no luck with TF paint removal....
do i have to soak it in for 24hrs for it to really have any effect??
the quickest results i've ever had was non acetone nail polish remover, but it caused some plastics to go really cloudy....

HLJ stocks them. (http://hlj.com/hljlist2/?Word=finishers&Dis=2&from=detail&searchpage=top_page)
What are you trying to remove? I've had good results with IPA but sometimes several applications are required (don't do it with clear bits though). Find a sealable container, add the parts and cover with the IPA. I check progress by scratching it off with a fingernail but I pretty much forget about it until the next day or two.

OIC... hlj ran out of the 3 tub set + cloth combo, but they still sell the tubs individually...noice...
soak for a day or two hey? ok.. i can see where i went wrong then...lol..
i applied some IPA on a cloth and tried to rub it out with pressure (as i found that method worked with nail polish remover previously) but then gave up when it didnt work....
Thanks for the tips!

Here's how I slap putty on to make mods.
Pin the parts with guitar wire.
http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/8545/p1011000.jpg
Rough up the plastic with sandpaper and smooth on apoxie sculpt. Tubes are there to preserve screw holes.
http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2193/p1011006e.jpg
Tack parts together while sanding to make sure it's symmetrical.
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/4459/p1011013.jpg
Parts roughed out. Still needs a bit of filing and sanding.

Hi Gamblor,
I am in the process of customizing a Sunstreaker into Breakdown. Did you use any under-coats before spraying the parts with metallic paint?
gamblor916
27th November 2010, 10:35 AM
I'm not sure how helpful I can be with this but this is what I do to prepare the surface.
Wash and sand the panels with 1000 grit wet and dry paper, then airbrush resin primer (http://www.hlj.com/product/GNZRP-261). I find it sticks better than other primers.
Depending on the final colour I spray white surfacer (http://www.hlj.com/product/GNZSF-283) next.
Then I apply Zero auto paint (http://www.zero-paints.co.uk/). This stuff typically cannot be brush painted. I recommend Tamiya or GSI spray paints otherwise.
I clear coat with either 2k clear (http://www.hiroboy.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=797) or my favourite Finishers Auto Clear (http://vfkfcgt.web.infoseek.co.jp/).
Then polish and admire :D
How's that for plugging products :D
