I don't know where my other thread has disappeared to so I'm starting a new one.
Here's my progress so far.
Brakes and wheels from a Tamiya GTR kit sprayed.

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/7537/p1250204dj3.jpg

New wheels solid black and cleared. Shiney :)

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7841/p1250211vi5.jpg

Some parts sprayed Subaru mica silver. It's a bit too light, I have a darker Mazda gunmetal coming which should be better.
Paint from hiroboy.com.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5715/p1250213md2.jpg

Quick mock-up. The new wheels are a lot wider so I had to extend the arches with Tamiya epoxy putty.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3007/p2130231lx2.jpg

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2200/p2130236wa1.jpg

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3985/p2130237oz7.jpg

Steering wheel and rims masked. They were a bitch to mask up, I spent half an hour on each wheel.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8457/p2220250oq5.jpg

Brakes nearly finished

I didn't think that was quite the definition...

a ricer is really a japanese made (or any asian made) car made to go faster but not necessarily so...

here's more info -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricer & http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ricer

Thanks guys.
Sprayed the rim edges chrome, turned out quite nice I think, have to do the steering wheel again though, will post pics later.

Looking Phat!!! It's not turning into a ricer, is it?

Not really, I just wanted to fit new wheels and paint it to look like movie Jazz.
Actually this was my second choice mod, I wanted to paint Shockwave a flip purple magenta with dark bronze wheels but I couldn't get hold of a second Shocky.

Next few days are going to be just tedious sanding, filling and resanding...

Wheels turned out ok. With masking its always a lottery as to what kind of finish I get.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/1097/p2290282ne3.jpg

Steering wheel turned out less than perfect but I'll use it.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9482/p2290287mf3.jpg

Ok to mount the rear wheels I needed plastic tubing of varying sizes

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3755/p2290293zd9.jpg

Cut down the original stub.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/794/p2290292aw8.jpg

Cut tubing to size. I had to do a couple of test runs to get the size right.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/880/p2290296cm4.jpg

The smaller diameter fits on the stub, the larger on the back of the brake disc.

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8333/p2290298pl9.jpg

Voila!

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/4180/p2290302ma9.jpg

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/1871/p2290304nc1.jpg

For the front I had to cut down and drill the original assembly. Original on right, modified on left.

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3231/p2290310wh0.jpg

I got just the right diameter so it fits snug with no glue.

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/204/p2290312sx5.jpg

http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/1263/p2290314fr9.jpg

Poly caps hold the wheels in place and allow it to spin.

I was trying to remove a pin and had the bright idea to drill a hole and bash it out from the other side. Not a good idea. I busted the whole post out by accident. Luckily it was a clean break and I glued it back with Tamiya cement. I used a soldering iron to get the pins out.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/2249/p3080322dj8.jpg

The sides are roughed out and painted with Mr Surfacer as a filler.

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/4358/p3090328wk5.jpg

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/251/p3090327yl6.jpg

Here's what I'm using to get it to shape. From top to bottom, various foam sanding sticks, knife, files and sandpaper.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/4486/p3090325ba5.jpg

I also drew some new dials. I ordered clear and white decal sheets from HLJ. I've never used these before so it should be interesting.
The ones in the black box are the finished dials

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/2940/dials1nz6.jpg

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1821/dials2li4.jpg

I needed logos so I drew those up as well, tracing some scans.

Any chance you can correct it? Considering all the effort you've gone through to make the car mode so superbly realistic I would hate to see it set back by something as simply as a speedo sticker.

Yeah but that doesn't mean there aren't Speedos out there with "kph" on them.

The US Congress forgot to pass a resolution on Ohio's statehood until 1953 (and it was granted statehood in 1803!). So yeah, the mistakes out there can be astounding at times

Small update. I didn't like the profile of the front arch so back to the putty again.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/5458/p3210023by1.jpg

Removing the pin for the roof was scary, so careful not to break the hinge or clear bits.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/7182/p3220029sl6.jpg

The rear wheel arch had too much of a gap so I glued strips of styrene sheet to fill it out a bit.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/9703/p3230036ib3.jpg

I also sprayed up a lot of parts in Mazda galaxy gray.

Thanks for digging this back up :)
It's still not where I would like it to be, there's still some surface blemishes I have to fix. Plus all that rain wasn't good for spraying.
I was hoping to spray more primer this weekend, sand, then black then gray the following week. After that decals, clear and finish, that's the plan anyway.
More progress soon hopefully ;)

I took some more pins out. The ones for the rear doors and the swivel at the bottom were difficult but I managed to get them out and fix up the parts ok.
The decals came out nice, considering I used the wrong paper in the laser printer at work. Sealed it with a coat of clear.

http://home.exetel.com.au/leducly/images/P5160216.jpg

I just need one more primer coat to check that it's perfect then the colour coats can go on.

I'd seriously wanted to do a custom like this of Jazz but just didn't know how to translate all my thoughts into reality... just didn't know how to start.

I did some searching and found that some aircraft and auto modelers use precut vinyl for masking and found there's at least 2 aftermarket companies making such masks. I've found that these masks are very similar to the vinyl stickers people use for car decals, signage and whatnot. As it happens a work colleague recently made up some stickers for his car and pointed me to http://www.bladerunnergraphics.com.au
So I made up some graphics, and threw in some autobot logos.

http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/5025/p8170086re4.jpg

All masked up

http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/2543/p8170089bc9.jpg

Success! :D I ran a brand new blade around the outside just in case, but these masks worked superbly well. No bleed whatsoever.

Onto the last stage - the front lights.
Here are my push moulds, made using the original lenses reinforced with putty.
Staple the clear plastic to the wood cut out, warm up the plastic (I used the gas stove) and push the mould through.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/9092/p4070409.jpg

My first attempts with clear styrene was disastrous.
I looked around to see what I was doing wrong and it turns out clear styrene is terrible for DIY moulding (whereas ordinary white styrene is excellent).

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/976/p4070405.jpg

Something that has a wider working temp range and more usable I found is PET ie, tf packaging.
Much better results.

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/8061/p4070407.jpg

For the hardware I picked up some stuff from modeluphobby.com (http://www.modeluphobby.com/)

The tint is actually blue, might be the pics or background. The eyes are great, I found them digging around at HLJ.
I have to strip the chrome off the light pod, spray it black then fit new metal piping and lenses.

As for commissions probably next spring after I clear my "to finish" pile, maybe :D

I mixed clear blue and clear gloss to make a lighter clear blue, spray then clear gloss over the top.
But that's an old photo, three attempts later I just left it clear. It's too cold for gloss coats.

Made by aptly named Crazy modeler.

I cut up sections of aluminium tubing to make new light fittings. After the glue sets properly I can clean it up and paint it flat black.

I'm not a huge fan of customs generally but this deserves to be commended on a job well done. Love the wet/glossy look you've given the paint, it looks fantastic! The colour is galaxy grey as used on a special edition RX-8 a few years ago.
I had to widen the arches to accomodate the wheels and tyres. The wheels are Nismo LM-GT4s (http://hlj.com/product/TAM12608). The brake discs and steering wheel are from that set as well.

Ah I thought the rims and colour looked familar!

Rx8s are very cheap and affordable nowadays, not $68k like they were when they came out in 03 ;)

Sadly the insurance still costs an arm and a leg though.
