Like the title says who is willing to pay more for repaints?? I cant justify the huge markups for these repaints not that I buy it or anything.
I was looking at my G1 toys and i think what makes this line so good is taht no matter how small they were they had a different head sculpt. Apart from some seekers and smokescreen etc. Even Hoist and trailbrekaer had different head sculpts. I think if you're going to repaint something and jack up the price it deserves at least a new head, if it is suppose to be a different character.
Like the universe Hardhead to me that is just an onslaught and same with dreadwing to me he is just silverbolt. To me they are just being lazy wouldnt you agree???
Hehe to me G1 is and will always be the best with a few exceptions like a few of the universe and masterpeice and binaltechs. Each of the G1 toys had different heads and the moulds weren't reused over and over again. Who else would like to add their opinion???

I don't mind getting a redeco but I wouldn't necessarily pay a slight premium for it unless it's a mold that I quite like (eg Classics Grimlock/Universe Overkill or Classics Starscream/Classics Skywarp)
If the toy has had a redeco and a slight retooling (eg head/face), I might consider paying more for it seeing as it is somewhat 'different', but usually the justification is quite difficult unless it is significantly different (eg Henkei Dirge/Thrust).

Unless it's a limited exclusive then I wouldn't pay extra for a straight repaint. :/

Um... only if Bluestreak, Prowl, Smokescreen, Red Bumblebee, Yellow Bumblebee, Red Cliffjumper, Yellow Cliffjumper, Ironhide, Ratchet, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Rumble, Frenzy, Sideswipe, Red Alert, Starscream, Thundercracker, Skywarp, Dirge, Ramjet, Thrust, Grapple, Inferno, Eject, Rewind, Storm Cloud, Skyhopper, Axer, Circuit, Wheeljack, Slicer, Rumbler, Sprocket, Powertrain, Ironworks, Hammer, Cement-Head, Sledge, Terror-Tread, Knockout, Gusher, Grit, Pipeline, Whisper, Groundshaker, Hot House, Tailwind, Greasepit, Muslinger, Tailwind, Hot House, twenty-four permutations of Minispies and a bunch of other G1 toys never existed in the eighties and nineties. Except they did.
Personally, many of my favourite toys from my collection are more-expensive modern G1 repaints. Gadep, Black Ironhide, Green Ratchet, Bug Bite, Bad Boy, Treds, Small Foot, Path Finder, Road Ranger, Detritus, Overcharge, Magnificus, Orion Pax, Glit, Garboil and many more of my most treasured toys are 'marked-up' repaints - I like them that way. Some of them are even 'prepaints' like my pre-transformers Chop Shop. And then there are my weird Brazilian and Argentinean recolours. And my three Macross 'Jetfires'. :D
Personally, as long as someone official keeps releasing weird recolours of G1 toys, I'll keep buying them.

I don't mind interesting/creative/well thought out repaints. I generally will only pay extra if it's something that fits into the above and is limited (such as the e-Hobby exclusives Sky Shadow has mentioned).
Sadly, Hasbro's recent repaints generally falls outside the limits I set above (IMO, anyway), I'm finding myself buying less and less repaints. I find pointless repaints such as "Patrol Barricade" or "First Encounter" or whatever, and wouldn't even buy those at a discount. If there's a clever repaint such as the (transparent) BT Mirage or a new character such as Detritus, I'm usually keen, and will often pay a little more.

I don't mind paying 'extra' for Botcon repaints. And if an exclusive repaint is something I just can't miss out on (like Movie Fracture was, or the ROTF coloured G1 Skids) I don't mind paying a bit extra to import them.

Hmmm depends on the figure. If it was featured genuinely in a series then yes... I'm looking at you beast wars grimlock!

Yeah I know that repaints are inevitable for Hasbro seeing as it can make them some extra money but with recent repaints they arent actual characters from a cartoon. With G1 i know there are repaints but they are from a cartoon so it looks the same. I do believe some characters have the same vehicle mode but have a different face which I like and think is good. My main grudge is against the current universe line with jeftire repaint, and onslaught, silverboat. They are expensive for a repaint.

Depends on the repaint and whether I have another version of the mold. My main reason for getting SE Overkill was that I never got Classics Grimlock.

Not quite true; on the whole, G1 toys were created before the cartoon. For example Microman (Micro Change)'s MC03 Microcassette Robo Red Condor and Orange Condor became Laserbeak and Buzzsaw respectively. Hence they both appeared in canon (cartoon and comics) being drawn with the same model but different colours. The same goes for the Seekers and Rumble and Frenzy, although we all know about how Sunbow swapped the colours for Rumble and Frenzy around creating the FIRRIB (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/FIRRIB) phenomenon (I'm not starting a debate about it, just stating facts!).
So if these repaints never existed as toys, they probably wouldn't have existed in the cartoon either.
I do believe some characters have the same vehicle mode but have a different face which I like and think is good.
You're right, a lot of early G1 toys were really retools and not straight repaints like we see nowadays.
e.g.:
+ Prowl / Bluestreak: Prowl has a strobe rack, Bluestreak doesn't
+ Runabout / Runamuck: different vehicle modes; Runabout is a Lotus Turbo Esprit whereas Runamuck is a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
+ Bumblebee / Cliffjumper: despite what Hasbro seems to think, they're NOT repaints of each other. Aside from different heads, Bumblebee is a VW Beetle whereas Cliffjumper is a Porsche 924 Turbo. Hubcap is also another retool - being a Porsche 924 Turbo like Cliffjumper, but has a different head and a reduced spoiler.
...etc.
My main grudge is against the current universe line with jeftire repaint, and onslaught, silverboat. They are expensive for a repaint.
I agree, which is why I skipped them all even when they were heavily discounted.

not a fan of repaints, even BT or Alts I will most probably give them a miss even they come with different heads

Depends on the repaint.
+1
As an example, the new Alternity lines are well-known notorious for repaints. But because of the quality of these toys, some may not help to be contented that one colour is better than the other. Like say the red Optimus Prime looks awesome with silver Megatron coz it somehow commemorates their original hues. But some (like me :)) would still get another pair of black or silver Prime worthy for display in alternate mode (like a scale model) or maybe a black Megatron which has a more kick ass-looking bot mode as compared to its blue or silver counterpart. And based on today's trend, the most recent released repaints tend to be more expensive that the previous versions.

Well some repaints work, some dont. But it really depends on the individuals taste. Some don't like the original colors the mold comes in , but, when they repaint it to something else, it kinda makes it more appealing and so the "want" factor changes from "pass" to "buy". Some repaints are an obvious blatant excuse to rake in more moolah before the mold degrades - ROTF soundwave, but in most cases are fail, fail, fail.
I for one just go nowadays with modern released TFs if I like how it looks to me. Seekers, yes bring on the rainbow squad, Ill buy one of each. umpteenth time recolor of bumblebee :confused:, uhm nah. If the color works- for me, Ill buy it, heck I might even skip the original and go for the recolour version instead. Also price determines it as well... wait for a sale is always good.

I don't mind repaints because G1 was, after all, based on them (okay, retools I guess). This doesn't mean I will buy them all though. I only get the ones I like or are a real different character. Bumblebee with a new hat is not really enough.
What really bugs me about repaints now, though, is that they swap factions! I can understand Teletraan 1 scanning the same vehicle for a number of similar TFs within their own factions, and I know the new movies changed that a bit, but at least keep the same moulds on the same team!

I would only buy a repaint if I liked dat mold and missed it da first time and da colours used isnt too bad, I wouldnt pay a higher price for it though, just think it's not worth it. With repaints, I seem to think most of da time they hav less paint applications than the original, which puts me off even further

I passed up two opportunities in the past month to get 2007 Movie Fracture (Classics Mirage repaint) for $40 and I'm still regretting it now. . ... .

Love the mold! Can't really justify $40 though. $30 (like SE Dragstrip) I have done. Only a little bit dissapointed :D
