View Full Version : The non-electronic gaming thread

This thread is for any kind of non-electronic (computer) gaming, such as:
+ board games (e.g.: chess, scrabble, monopoly etc.)
+ card games (e.g.: Duel Monsters, Magic The Gathering, Vampire The Masquerade etc.)
+ miniature gaming (e.g.: SW Minis, D&D Minis etc.)
+ table top RPGs (e.g. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons etc.)
...etc.

I really like Star Wars Miniatures, but aside from kuzzy I don't know of any other OTCA members who play it. I also quite like Scrabble, and we had fun playing Transformers Scrabble at the roller Sydney meet (it's like normal Scrabble, but an extra 5 points for any Transformers-related words) :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Transfan%20Meets/Sydney%20Meet%20October%202009/th_sydmeet_2009_10_03d.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Transfan%20Meets/Sydney%20Meet%20October%202009/sydmeet_2009_10_03d.jpg)

Transformers Monopoly is a lot of fun, and the beauty of it is that non-Transfan people like to play it too. :)
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_tfmonopoly.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/tfmonopoly.jpg)http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_yourmum.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/yourmum.jpg)http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Transfan%20Meets/Board%20Game%20Meet%20January%2016%202008/th_boardgamemeet1.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Transfan%20Meets/Board%20Game%20Meet%20January%2016%202008/boardgamemeet1.jpg)

The Beast Wars Mutating Card Game is very simple but fairly fun game to play. It's more of a game of chance and luck rather than skill or strategy.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Transfan%20Meets/Board%20Game%20Meet%20January%2016%202008/th_boardgamemeet3.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Transfan%20Meets/Board%20Game%20Meet%20January%2016%202008/boardgamemeet3.jpg)

Transformers Attacktix is a highly underrated game. It's surprisingly quite challenging and more fun than people tend to give it credit for. I say don't judge Attacktix until you've tried playing it. Like the Beast Wars Mutating Card Game, the rules are very simple (obviously both games are designed for very young players), but Attacktix is a greater game of skill. It's also similar to other table top miniature war games where more powerful characters like Optimus Prime and Megatron are worth more squad points and are actually harder to kill compared to low-cost "gumbies" like Mini-Cons or Decepticlones. The game is also compatible with other Attacktix games like Star Wars Attacktix... provided you can suspend disbelief that a lone Ewok can defeat a Decepticon. :p

There's also Transformers Chess, which is basically Chess with a Transformers themed board and pieces. :) I have a photo of this which I'll upload and post later. (^_^)

Axis & Allies can either be a board game (http://gameshepherd.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/axisandallies-original.jpg), a miniatures game (http://www.irook.com/gamekastle/photos/gkphoto_68.jpg) as well as an electronic game (http://wpcontent.answers.com/wikipedia/en/3/30/Axis_&_Allies_%282004%29_Coverart.jpg)! :) I did mention board games and miniatures gaming, but obviously there are far too many to name them all. But feel free to share with us any stories and/or piccies you may have of your A&A gaming. :)

Some people that I've played Star Wars Minis with are also Axis & Allies Miniatures players (I think some of them also know how to play the board game too). It's not a game I've ever gotten into though... Collectable miniatures war gaming is an f'expensive hobby, and alongside collecting Star Wars Miniatures and Transformers Attacktix, I really wasn't inclined to start collecting _another_ expensive miniatures war game! (>_<)

I must confess that I don't really know much about how Axis & Allies works, but I wonder if it's at all cross-compatible with Star Wars Galactic Battles. Cos regular Star Wars Miniatures is cross-compatible with Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures. I've played Star Wars Minis vs. D&D Minis twice... it was interesting. Star Wars units totally pwn in terms of technological superiority (i.e.: blaster shots have no range limits) but D&D units can totally pwn with powerful sorcery/magic. A single Beholder and a Death Knight killed off an entire squad of my Tusken Raiders and Imperial Stormtroopers! Damnit! I'd like to try another game using a Republic squad (i.e. Clone Troopers led by a Jedi). :)

I've played countless games over the years, Started when I temporarily grew out of Transformers pretty much, so a long time.

I prefer tabletop games to video games actually, strange but true I know but I prefer being face to face with the other player, and being a collector I prefer using physical pieces rather than 3D generated ones. Also things are more mutable than in a scripted game.

I've been part of a local gaming club since I was 12. Between the various members of the club we've played a bit of almost everything. We organise a big event called Mother Of All Battles that draws players from as far a field as New Zealand on the October long weekend.

Anyways I'd have trouble listing all the games I've enjoyed over the years. So here's a run down on my current favourtes, all Skirmish games wich use only a handfull of pieces, so intial outlay is the same as buying a new computer game.

Infinity

A scifi skirmish game set in an Anime inspired universe. Think Ghost in the Shell, with deadly gun fights, martial arts and hacking among the warfare styles of the game, not to mention a fair share of John Woo moments. For the most part though cunning and resource managment are the order of the day in this game.

Infinity video from MOAB
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2XxFL5RHEc)

Pulp City

Super Heroes and Super Villains battle over Pulp City, in much the same vain as the computer games City of Heroes, Fredom Force etc. Build a team of heroes or villains and use their unique skills wisely to defeat your foe. And what's not to like about inteligent, gattling gun wielding , cigar smoking apes?

Pulp City Video from MOAB (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l4s2Dnl4nM)

Malifaux

Victorian horror and wierd west is the style of this game, rather than roll dice you use a deck of cards. You also get a hand of cards which you can use to cheat fate when things go awry, use them wisely. Certain cards will trigger special powers and effects, but watch out for the black joker.

you forgot to mention wargames Like AXIS AND ALLIES:cool:

Which one you know there are like near 10 variants of the board game alone? Admitedly that's one game I've only managed to play once.

I also prefer table top games. I find them much more social than electronic games. Even when you play multiplayer electronic games people are pretty much in their own worlds. Just walk into any net café and you see people huddled over computers and shouting various profanities at each other. So many electronic gamers are either really bad losers and bad winners too (as parodied by the Headmaster in TF Animated).

I played mousetrap for the first time (yea, I know), a while ago. Pretty fun. I didn't win, but I had the most cardboard cheese bits. Oh yea, that's what it's about, the most cheese you can get. Cheese is all that mattered. I may have been captured and then stepped on, but I had more cheese than those other mice yo.

There have been a few threads in the past.I used to play dark elves. Just recently my cousin and I were looking at getting into 40K. I'm leaning towards the Tau Empire myself.

Tau? If you wanna play a bunch of Anime wannabees then you should play Infinity damnit, Cooler, cheaper, better.

Also (aside from mechanised forces) Tau have been somewhat outmoded due to last years new edition of 40k, as usual they didn't think to far ahead.

You get those types in tabletop gaming to, espescially in the tournament scene, where people can sometimes take things to seriously.

I seen that happen once before, some dude went absolutely crazy after he lost his best character. He was jumping around like a maniac (kinda amusing to watch though :p)

GoktimusPrime

Yeah true. I used to play with a Star Wars minis player who would throw his miniatures, dice etc. as far as he could and walk away when he was losing. He was reprimanded several times by the store owner about doing that, so he'd wait until after the match was over and he'd lost before having a tanty. I think he got warned a few more times about that too, so afterwards we'd play and you just see the anger seething in his eyes with this sour lemon look on his face. Soon afterwards I think he quit playing SWM (or at least, playing in the same group or tournaments that I would frequent). :p

I guess tournaments bring out the worst in people because people pay entry fees to pay, and of course with prizes to be won there's more at stake. But the thing with SWM tournaments is that everyone wins a prize, it's just that higher ranking players get first dibs so they'll take the rarer pieces. But for me I'm just happy to play. :) I think it's sad when people play specifically to win rather than for the fun of the game.

Pretty much, things like prizes and game status seem to mean a lot to these people, same with video games too I guess. A serious tournament player once warned his buddies not to come to our club becuase we don't play seriously enough (and have fun?), we were like WTF?

What I really can't understand is why people want to own noobies though, it seems counter productive. When I play someone new I try to explain things and hold back, so the player has a good experience and comes back for more games. I do admit to failing at this at times, due to trying out some new weapon or devious plan, but hey I don't set out to bury them in the dirt from the word go.

The above is my biggest turn of with online gaming to.

...yeah, that's really stupid. And again, I find this occurs more frequently with electronic gaming (but it does occur too frequently with table top games too). What I like to do with noobs is to create some kind of handicap. So for example in SWMs, I might let my opponent play with really powerful characters like Jedi knights, Sith Lords, Mandalorians, bounty hunters etc., and I'll field a team of weaker characters, like say Imperial Stormtroopers. This still allows me to play as I usually do, but with a relatively weaker team. And even then, I still go easy on them... I don't do slack things like using an astromech droid to override a door and lock my opponents' team in a room or use techniques to improve my Stormtroopers' attack rating (e.g.: stacking commander effects, combining fire etc.). I might do it once or twice just to show them how it's done (cos let's face it, once someone uses a good tactic on you you'll remember to use it back!), but I'm not gonna keep hammering them with it... unless they keep making the same silly mistake (like walking across my adjacent squares (-_-))... but that's more like I'm teaching them a lesson rather than just trying to show off with "total pwnage." Sometimes if a noob is really struggling I'll even break the rules and let them field a team with more squad points! (e.g.: 150 pt squad vs. my 100 pt squad)

I like it when a new player gets good and they start pwning you! :D (cos then you're reading to take your gloves off and have a good game). So if you want a new player to give you a challenge then you got to guide or coach them to get up to your level (even surpass you!) :)

I think every player needs to remember that we were _all_ noobs at some stage. (^_^)

Right again, though I have been playing Infinity since 2007 It's taken some time to master the game, in particular among games it has a steep learning curve, but once you get past that things really open up. The best games are the ones that swing from side to side like a seesaw, and when it comes to gaming a hard fought last second defeat is better than an overwhellming one sided victory any day in my book. Besides they make the best stories no one wants to hear in detail how so and so's superior army crushed their foe with superior numbers (spamming) or by the book strategy, they want to hear stories of insane heroics, of battles turning around due to people taking 1 in a 100 chances, or how glorious victory was denied to you due to the cowardice of your soliders (to name a few examples). :p

In any case the local level of competition is now at the point where there's no need to hold back. Last Sunday I got owned in my first game, so I deployed one of the most deadly weapons of the United Nations of Pan Oceana the Cutter. A 5 meter tall heavy machine gun wielding robot, that can cloak. it's a terrifying warmachine for a noob to face, it had long been hiding in the cupboard while the more friendly non cloacking robot the Armoured Cavalry took its spot, but no more the Cutter has returned. Of course those with a little experience know it's limitations, but even then its damn scary.

Against those of moderate skill levels I like to use experimental forces, things I haven't tested before, unfortunately this can go pear shaped if the test proves to effective, but its usualy a good way to try something new.

Mind you there is one guy I know who is absolutely of the scale in terms of skill, gung ho play style, and sheer luck. He's a bit on the other end of the extreme. Although he doesn't own noobs for kicks, he always seems to outmanouvere you, it can be disheartaning to play him sometimes, particularly for new people. he is getting better though.

The funniest game I had was where I was playing a Republic squad being led by Mace Windu, and I was defeated by a measly squad of effing Battle Droids! It was all down to the roll of the dice... I kept on getting nothing but crap rolls and my opponent kept on rolling high numbers (with lots of natural 20s which score critical damage*)! Aaargh! My opponent conceded that it was very much a Steve Bradbury style victory. :D

---------
*which droids are immune to, not that I rolled _any_ 2 digit numbers during that skirmish. (-_-)

Nope, but I've played Zombies, which is basicly the same scenario, fight your way through town to the hellicopter. This game seems to be a more evolved version.

They can do that, however the current ed has a run rule, so all the slow armies got faster, so It becomes harder to avoid the enemy. There still probably ok though, but fielding a gunline can be tricky.

The Fire Warriors are nice minatures, but I don't dig the battlesuits there to square and ungainly. Although I have seen come excellant conversions uisng Gundam and Macross kit pieces.

Personaly I prefer em slim and dynamic looking.

Just to regenerate this thread a bit, here's a youtube vid doing the rounds. For all those people who play with little men made of plastic or metal it seems we are in good company.

Peter Cushing and his toy soldiers. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEC7dsFlvIE)

Even Grand Moff Tarkin and Dr Who are a fan of miniatures games.

Obviously Tarkin is a power palyer fielding two Death Stars. :p
