Thought I'd make this thread to see if there are any fellow Electro nutters out there. :D

I wasn't into music AT ALL until around year 11 in College...Just nothing did it for me. Then, one day, I stumbled into Revolution CD (a music/comic/dvd store in Canberra, well, it used to be) and decided to sift through a few albums in the 'alternative' section. I picked up an album with a frosted glass case and some bizarre architectural lines arranged on a plain white background. Thinking 'this is a bit different' I decided to give the CD a listen using the instore headphones/CD player and that was enough. I was hooked! The album was EP7 by Warp Records duo Autechre, who fans of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and their ilk will know as being pioneers of the IDM/braindance genre.

My music taste has since developed a lot since EP7 and while I still very much enjoy IDM (which sadly there really isn't a great deal of these days) I also enjoy Trance, Drum 'n' Bass (I think the most ultimate event I've been to was Calyx and Aphrodite in Canberra), Psy-Trance, pop, dub step (Burial FTW), Ambient, Lounge, House amongst others.

After college I was very much into the rave scene and would party all weekend (No pills...Promise :p) usually to the tune of drum 'n' bass, breaks or Trance. You might not think so but Canberra had some pretty sweet music events! My idea of the perfect Friday/Saturday night is having a few drinks with friends and dancing all night to sweet, sweet electro music (in all its many any varied flavours).

At the moment I'm really enjoying the new albums from Little Dragon, Lusine, Hudson Mohawke (from the Warp label, same as Autechre :D), Fever Ray, amongst others.

So is there anyone else with similar taste? Do you have an official Warp Aphex Twin shirt that you wear with pride? What are your electro picks for 2009?

i found out i like drum and bass recently, never would have thought i would, generally because my musical tastes stem from some crazy heavy metal XD

Im looking to expand my taste further, so anyone who could recommend anything that is upbeat and has a good bass line, im all ears :D

I'm a HUGE electronic music fan. My tastes cater more for the downtempo electronica. Am a pretty big (real) House music fan and currently liking the return to the disco sound within the genre. In no particular order or genre my favorite artists:
- Trentemoller
- Jay Denes (Blue Six/Naked Music)
- Helios
- Ulrich Schnauss
- DJ Gregory
- Louie Vega
- Telefon Tel Aviv
- Husky Rescue
- Blu Mar Ten

To name just a few. Currently entranced by Urban Myth Club's - Helium album.

Ah Stompster, what exquisite taste you have. Anyone who is into ambient/melodic/introspective music AT ALL needs to check out Ulrich Schnauss' work. A Strangley Isolated place is probably the best palce to start. :)

Doom e1m1, ghost 'n goblins, golden axe, etc. All good, especially remixes. :)

I like your style!

I know Trentemoller, Ulrich Schnauss and Helios. Will have to source the rest.

I like William Orbit's 'Hello Waveforms' allot. Similar to Schnauss' stuff. I'm sure you would know it tho, but for those that don't Sea Green (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQudjuAhNR4) and Surfin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCicXtnU2pU) get allot of play-time on the iPod.

There was a quote about how good 'Courtship Dating' is that went something like "This song is so good it makes you forget what arseholes they are. And they are HUGE arseholes"...

Cool thread. Yeah, Ulrich Schauss is beautiful music. I love nearly all electronic. I've been a classically trained pianists since the age of four, and have played numerous other instruments since, and even participated in a few professional orchestras in my teens (playing the French Horn :D).

I've come to the conclusion that electronic music adds a proverbial third dimension to music. The true definition of music is something containing the following three parameters: Pitch, Volume and Timbre. While analog instruments are astonishly beautifully and diverse, they are finite in the timbres they can create. Electronic music has no such limits.

I had a massive multi-year fetish with Psytrance, went to lots of outdoor parties across Australia, specifically about 5 x Rainbow Serpent Festivals (the best!), a bunch of Earthcores and even the solar eclipse party in 2002 in the Adelaide desert. The Psytrance scene has an almost sister-like psychedelic chill scene, where many artists cross over, of which the king is Simon Posford. By himself, playing full-on (yet clever) psytrance, he is known as Hallucinogen, but with Raja Ram, they form the duo known as Shpongle.

Shpongle's Tales of the Inexpressible is what I call my "desert island" album. As in, if I was stuck on a desert island with only one album, this would be it. Musical, original, psychedelic, funky, diverse, everything! A truly musical, intellectual psychedelic feast!

Doubledealer
10th February 2010, 06:35 PM
Shpongle is unreal! I'm sad to say I haven't been to too many psy-trance events - I would love to have gone to one of those Rainbow Serpent Festivals (is it still on these days?)! Have you ever seen Astrix play live, jay? Love that guys style.

jaydisc

Astrix, full-on Israeli. Unfortunately, no. But I had a phase where I was really into him and other similarly banging Israelis. I did win a contest where I got flown to the Victorian bush in a Cessna with a friend to see Alien Project, who was a friend/cohort/collaborator with Astrix. He ended up being a real jerk to the organisers, who were friends, and I lost the taste for him as a result.

Yeah, RSF still runs, but I didn't go this year. However, friends said best eva!

Simon Posford is a ****ing legend, that would have been epic! Tales of the Inexpressible has to be one of the best albums of all time. :)

Holy crap, Bassnectar is coming to Australia in March!! http://www.inthemix.com.au/news/aust/49092/Bassnectar_gets_his_wobble_on_this_March

jaydisc

Yeah, Posford's undeniably a musical genius. And Tales of the Inexpressible is my Desert Island album ;)

As to Bassnectar, I've found his more recent stuff harder and simpler, and seeing him DJ was more along those lines, so don't expect any of the more layered or diverse sounds (which I prefer, or at least prefer the diversity). But definitely worth seeing to get your "wobble" on. The Melbourne venue he's playing at is quite an upgrade from the last venue I saw him at.

This (http://www.inthemix.com.au/events/reviews/41454/Bassnectar_Roxannes_Parlour_Melbourne_310109) was the Bassnectar gig I went to, like Shpongle as a consolation for not being able to go to Rainbow Serpent yet again, where he was also playing.

That's good stuff DD. Keep it up. Very solid. Just re-edit it to make it go for 5-6 minutes and let certain parts breath and go for longer.

I've missed a tonne of this style of chill-out. Ever since chill-out it all turned acoustic alternative. There is a saving grace with a UK indie label called i-Label who is harking back to the early halcyon days of chillout with more balearic stylings when it was at it's gorgeous as a sunset/sunrise peak.

Pretty much anything off volume 1, We are the music makers, schottkey 7th path, Heliosphan is my absolute favorite off that cd though. I dont live volume 2 as much, but Cow Cud is a Twin was always good =P I used to love that cd even more before they gave the tracks proper names. Its amazing how your brain and mood can be affected by songs that dont have a title. Its like even though they are just songs and sounds, they can make you feel a certain way or remind you of certain things. I wish more music was like that these days. I'm rambling now, but to me Selected ambient works doesnt really age. Its been around for ages but always seems to sound fresh and new.

know what i love about electronic music, you can essentially sample anything you want.

not generally my style of music, but i actually like it
has a good beat to it, just not fast enough or enough bass for my liking :P

Stompy
22nd June 2011, 09:35 PM
Oooooh. On the new disco sound this time eh? I really like. Ultra funky. Handclaps galore. You probably just need a little bit more of a melodic bassline playing throughout, but that's just my opinion.

If you want some off-kilter disco inspiration, give a listen to "Circus"by Black Devil Disco Club. That has some off kilter nu-disco that you seem to have on your track.

But man great job! :)

Give Anoraak's "Above Your Head" a listen on youtube. That track reminds me of first love, his album is full of synths and often 8-16-bit videogame like melodies with a lot of soul.

Doubledealer
22nd June 2011, 11:18 PM
Thanks for the great feedback guys. :) And yes Blackie, I too loooove being able to sample anything and everything. Can you guys guess which movie I ripped that little conversation from during the bassline? ;) I love the accents in that movie!

I'll definitely be checking out those songs at work tomorrow Stompster, Nu Disco is the shiz! :D Onra is a huge inspiration for me at the moment, I don't think 'The Longest Distance' is a fantastic album but it has so many cool ideas that have really helped me to develop my own style.

Cool. you got any more tracks we can listen to..? I've been using reason to no avail :(:( Recently bought NI Maschine so still trying... But you actually have to have some musical talent to make it work proper.. It's weird, I used to play trombone in year 7 for about 6 weeks..... used to know all the classics... Dood that was sweet! Damn, soz for the late reply bro, poor form on my part!

So what's everyone listening to at the moe? Would love some bass heavy recommendations!

Been listening to a lot of Liquid Stranger lately, his ambient and heavy tunage is the stuff of legend! This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80sJZObr934) has to be my favourite though (prob my neighbours least favourite >_>)

Bloody stoked that one of my all time favourite dubstep artists, the glorious Figure (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20FuAK9cUWI) will be playing at Creamfields this year so I'm pretty pumped for that!

Zomboy and Skism at Capitol in Perth tomorrow night too so things are certainly right in the world at the moment. :D Anyone thinking/planning on heading out, let us know!

Oh and before I forget, I'm also really enjoying Israeli producer Shayning's tracks lately. His style is bass heavy and melodic, and will appeal to fans of psy-trance and dubstep. Check him out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9uBdvvkiSU), unique style and awesome beats!

ALSO, thanks to Dell's awesome 24hr 30% off monitors sale I just bought a 24" Dell Ultrasharp monitor to throw into my music room/studio/thing. Just need my new keyboard and mouse to arrive and I'll be ready to get back into messing around with Ableton. :)

What's everyone been listening to this week? I've been enjoying some more chilled out stuff so far, loving this (http://andrea.bandcamp.com/album/bedtime-stories-ep) little EP by bandcamp artist Andrea at the moment!

How was Metrik bruv?

I went to the Perth show of Clark's Iradelphic tour last night and it was a bit underwhelming to be honest. I love this guys stuff but the live show just didn't do it for me. Was praying he'd play Ted, Gob Coitus or Indigo Optimus after the encore but alas, it wasn't to be (we got treated to some random noise instead). Definitely not the experience of seeing Clark live that I had envisioned. :(

My discovery of the week is UK Brainfeeder artist, Lapalux. Will be seeing him next month too along with oOoOO. Good times ahead! :D

Cheers Blackie, I'm really happy with the setup. :) The key thing to remember here is this: When you're looking for a new place to live, choose your words very wisely. ;) For example, I said (to my gf): "All I want is one room to use as my music/Transformers room, you can do whatever you like with the rest." This will put you in the good books, and chances are you will get to do what you like with some of the other rooms anyway (lounge and study in my case). :p

Can't stop listening to this amazing mix (http://soundcloud.com/bondax/mix-for-mary-anne-hobbs) thanks to the equally amazing Bondax, give it a listen chaps!

Awesome, will be giving the new mix a listen later tonight mate.

re: the speakers - I did a load of research a while back and imo for the price you won't get much better than the ones I use. This is exactly what I got from the same buyer (who's also in Melbourne so +1 for you) - 2 X JBL LSR2325P @ $220ea (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JBL-LSR2325P-Studio-Monitor-Each-Free-Shipping-/290712515105?pt=AU_Pro_Audio&hash=item43afd0f221). Amazing, AMAZING monitors which are great for music listening AND production. You can even get a JBL device for them which will tune them to the room they're in, and an additional sub (which I still need to buy!).

You'll also need an audio interface (essentially an external soundcard) to connect the monitors/speakers to your PC/laptop and some nice balanced TRS to TRS cables.

For the cables I always go with Pro Audio LA (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310227855384) <-- those ones I've linked are the exact ones I'm using (2 X for speakers, 2 X for MicroKorg keyboard). You can even choose what colour you want as they're custom made!

In terms of audio interfaces the sky (and budget) is the limit. After much research I went with the Focusrite Saffire Pro24 FireWire Audio Interface (bought from ebay also) which does everything I could ever want and more. You will definitely need a good firewire card in your PC or laptop to support this however, I use the Focusrite recommended (and very cheap) STARTECH PCI1394_4T 4-PORT FIREWIRE PCI CARD in my desktop PC and SIIG SIFWEC2P 2-Port FireWire-400 ExpressCard/34 Expansion Card in my Lenovo ThinkPad laptop. Also note that it's important for your firewire cable to be 2m or less in length for optimal performance.

A lot of it obviously comes down to budget and stuff though. I'm in the process of upgrading the sound setup in my PC gaming/2nd music listening room atm. I'm using that cheap (but awesome) DAC (this one (http://www.ebay.it/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180642993677&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:AU:3160)) I linked a while back and intend to get some Audioengine A2's for the speakers. All comes back to how much you want to spend :p Will prob end up buying a better switching power supply for that Topping DAC too...It keeps going

Candy time...

Better version of my audio interface:

You probably wouldn't want to use it even if it did. As long as your laptop has an ExpressCard/34 expansion slot you'll be fine to use something like the firewire card I mentioned. Plus you get an extra glowing blue light, can't beat that (check the thing coming out the right of my laptop). ;)

hey Blackie. i was thinking about getting into it a bit more, but i'm not sure whether to update the cdj's or get something like traktor or serato and use the old decks..
with your traktor do you use decks with time-coded vinyl or do you have a midi-controller of some sort.

blackie
25th May 2012, 05:47 PM
im using a traktor kontrol s2, ie this

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/8-25-2011traktors2top3.jpg

Its a dedicated midi controller

if i had my time again, and a fair bit more money id prob have opted for CDJ's with timecoded cds and get myself a small effects unit or similar (ie a NI X1 or even the new F1) only because CDJ's are the industry standard and if i ever end up playing in a club chances are ill have to use them

but the midi controller does have its advantages, such as being able to remap the whole thing to how i like it (or in my case use someone elses maps because im lazy) and change things such as what the jog wheels do (mine can do both scratching/searching and also control effects) which is a nice touch

and mine takes up sfa space :P

Slag
25th May 2012, 08:06 PM
hmmmm. i didn't think bout time cd's. but your right if you are ever gonna play anywhere thats most likely what your going to be behind..
well, i'll need to buy 1 cdj then and traktor. thinking about it , traktor should work on cdj's and vinyl yeah? it's just the time code vinyl and or time code cd's i'll have to buy as extras....
actually.. this might be a stupid question.. you have all your tracks on the lappy. the lappy is plugged into the mixer, are you still going to use both decks and the mixer as per normal or is the laptop now the mixer. cause you can only plug your laptop into 1 channel. and if so, if i didn't have one of those s2's is all the mixing/fading/eq done via the mouse?

blackie
25th May 2012, 08:26 PM
to use the timecode CD's you need something such as the traktor audio 2. it interprets the sounds from the CDJ's/timecode cd's and makes it work with traktor.

yeah all my tracks are on my laptop, laptop is connected to the S2 by a usb cable and the s2 is connected to my speakers. the s2 is a midi controller, so what it actually does is control the traktor program, so you can either use the s2 or your mouse if you really wana lol

its not an actual mixer as the only line in is a mic input, all input is via USB via laptop.

if any of that makes sense XD
