View Full Version : New 'G1ish' War Within like game in the making

Just got the new Game informer Today and Didn't think much till I looked at the top corner.

"Transformers: War For Cybertron, A six page exclusive review. PG 48"

And Holy hell we are getting a new TF game!

Sad part is it's not tied to any continuity. As the name suggests it's pretty much War Within but the Video Games on telling it seems. It's taking cues from Gears of war as a 3rd Person over the shoulder shooter. Will have a Autobot and Decepticon Campaign. They keeping quiet on Multiplayer but it will have some sort of Online modes. Like the Armada game you will be able to choose which bot you want for a mission but the other bots not chosen will be your teams AI. Enemies will drop weapons which is interchangeable. And like the movie games we won't be confined to land vehicles only. And transforming plays a good deal into gameplay.

Not a lot of vehicle mode pics, about the only one is Megatrons which has him as a less pointy version of Animateds Cybertron mode though he looks more tankish than flight capable. Most bots seem a mix between G1 and War Within with a few more influences here and there. Prime looks like they took the War Within model and just added his normal dual windows, Megatron is a more angular version of Classics (Gun) robot mode. I see an Ironhide which looks very slimmed down almost like a red Kup. I see a bot that I'm guessing is Blitzwing (closely based on his Animated form) holding a giant spiked mace weapon. Soundwave is ... well Soundwave. Like every other Con in here he is a tad sharp around the edges but He retains his classic head, chest and shoulder weapon. Another Bot is shown fighting Prime (who is holding a giant dual bladed axe) in what looks like a CR facility or holding cells in the background)

All in all it looks pretty sweet. Release is for 2010 for 360, PS3, and PC

Personally I think the robot designs are pretty awesome and probably what the movies should have been like.

Damn, the links don't work for me.

Any word on who is making the game?

EDIT: Developer is High Moon Studios who have made Darkwatch & The Bourne Conspiracy, both are shooters that have generally been well received.
This could turn out alright, but the publisher is Activision so a half finished buggy release is just as likely.

Yeah quite interesting designs, very G1 but with a big mecha influence, but not the cartoony sort that we usualy see.

Not sure if they'd work better for a movie though, seeing as how they'd still be considerably constrained when it come to movement and articulation.

I hope it's a good game, though generaly speaking I can think of very few exsisting franchise based games that are decent.

Rumor is flying about that this game is actually based on the next Transformers cartoon. However that is very likely to be pure wishful thinking from overly excited fans.

All the fan sites are now flared up with this and Allspark is rumored to have crashed due to traffic :)

1Azrael1 - I can't wait for that teaser trailer!

Word on the street is now that due to the Halo toy line becoming a big success based only on the video game with no cartoon and Hasbro being the ultimate copy cats of other people's successes - This game may have an accompanying toy line.

For a game based toy line to be succesful the game needs to be some Kick @ss piece of entertainmet with good epic story and at least good none frustrating gameplay.

I have doubts that Activision and Hasbro are capable of that.

Quite obviously it has alot of hype to it if Allspark crashed :p

We can only hope that Hasbro and Activision pull off a kick @ss game. I have my doubts as well, but who knows. I want to watch the trailer to, and I won't judge it solely on that either. I will buy it when it comes out anyway, I bought the one for PS2 because it was Transfomers, never liked Armada/Energon, but it was still fun to run around as Op.

Looks a bit 'Animated'

Now that you mention it, it kinda does.

Now I am only speculating here but could it be that this will be used as a precursor, or in conjunction with, the new TV show? And could it be that they will use some of the models from Animated but retool them a bit? Because to me Megs looks like a more bad a@@ version of the Animated version. And Op has a big chest like his Animated counterpart. As well as the use of melee weapons, which to my knowledge, started using with Animated?

kup
10th December 2009, 11:31 AM
To me, Megs looks more like his Classics version - Look at the chest, arms and of course, his head. The tank mode as somebody mentioned, looks a bit like his AM tank with some WW thrown in.

Prime on the other hand does look more like his Animated Counterpart, particularly on that 'axe duel' pic.

I think this game is going to grab bits and pieces of design detailing from across all lines but ultimately be 'G1'.

True about Megatron, but his head, to me, looks similar to Animated, just a bit retooled.

But you are probably right, it looks like they are getting ideas from all lines, but primarily going with a G1 look.

I suppose more will be revealed with the release of this highly anticipated teaser trailer.

The artwork is pretty good, it has bits of everything but doesn't look as cartoony as usual. But then I'm a big fan of concept art in general, always seems to have a lot more character and rawness than the final product.

Still awesome concept art doesn't necesarily translate into awesome products. So I'm not going to get to excited....... yet.

Interesting, I'm not really much of a video gamer though I do like a good intro movie. Still it would take more than that to get me into the game.

Toy's could be interesting, I hope they somehow find a way to give them that gritty look, or capture some of the movie-esque not so cartoony feel, as I worry Hasbro spinof toys of non earthern designs like that would end up with a cartoony Armada-Cybertron look.

This should not be removed as it appears to be an official - not leaked, posting. The other youtube video mentioned by Kup has been taken down.

Having re-watched this, it reminds me a lot of the Transformers (Armada) game for the PS2. Even some of the sound effects (if you listen carefully) seem to have been recycled for War for Cybertron. Not surprising really as both are done by Activision. Hopefully it will be just as great.

Edit: Just realised my mistake. Transformers Armada was developed by Atari and not Activision :D

So far everything is reading as 'I care about the franchise and making a good game' rather than a soul less cash in atttempt so I am positive.

They mised out the platformy game of Transformers that also came out on the commodore 64 as well. I am not sure whether its was before the one they listed or not.

I wonder what other characters will be in as either playable or boss characters ... I’m hoping for maybe Arcee, Cosmos, Shockwave and maybe 1 or 2 completely new characters to surprise everyone

oh and to those hoping that the new cartoon series is based on this game, I’d hate to ruin your enthusiasm but according to This http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/other-news-20/new-transformers-cartoon-now-casting-168869/ there is gonna be a character named General Fowler which sounds like a pretty human name, but this game is based on the planet Cybertron which (as far as we know) has no humans on it, I guess the best you could hope for is a cartoon with character designs similar to this set on Earth

And the game website has another countdown. Right now I cant be bothered to work out how long until it reaches zero.

Also another tidbit is Amazon says the release will be July 22nd.

This is the part that's interesting:

“For the first time, Hasbro is working with Activision to drive the TRANSFORMERS fiction forward into new story arcs, demonstrating pivotal moments in Transformers history that defined who they are,” said Aaron Archer, Senior Design Director, Hasbro. “This remarkable video game helps us to tell a critical event in TRANSFORMERS lore that will be used as canon for future storylines in a way we could have only dreamed of a few years ago. It is a testament to the success of the TRANSFORMERS brand and a key element to the story we look forward to telling in 2010 and beyond.”

TFwiki has also updated their article but I am not sure where they are getting their info.

Transformers: War for Cybertron is in development for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Windows PC, Wii™ and Nintendo DS™

At least it is being developed for the Wii as well and even DS.

This causes a bit of concern. The DS and possibly the Wii will not be able to handle the same identical game as the PC, PS3 and 360. Which means that there will be 2-3 different games being developed simultaneously scattering resources instead of the developers focusing on making a single good game.

Good point actually. hmmm, we will have to play the waiting game to see how this goes.

Most of the time Wii & DS games are handled by a different dev team for that reason.

They had to do the same with the TF2 game - splitting up resources and budget to make 5 different versions. I think that one turned out okay, but would have been a lot better if development was focused on just the one game.

I concur there Mr Griff. Its a shame, but I guess it has to be done in the current market situation.

I like the idea of online co-op mode. Hopefully its some sort of story mode, as opposed to team based "capture the flag" etc etc.

critical event in TRANSFORMERS lore that will be used as canon for future storylines
Wonder if this will be a new story or something like the work-up to G1 More than meets the eye, ie the struggle of the Autobots to find energon etc etc or something epic along the lines of the fallen and the origins of the battle?

Looks like the game may well be related to other media as well.

My main concern though is the levels. Most of the time Cybertron has been seen as metallic and at night. Does Cybertron have a sun and are there going to be varied levels (eg a mecha jungle-esque level) or is all going to be urban Cybertron.

That's very true about the ROTF game. I own the PS2 version (had to import it from the UK as it never saw release here) and it's completely different to the PS3 version. Probably a good thing; on Good Game (ABC2 Mondays @ 8.30 PM) ROTF PS3 was nominated for the worst game of 2009.

kup
17th December 2009, 01:30 PM
The ROTF game may be considered good when compared to previous TF games but when compared to other video game releases in general - it is pretty sucky and mediocre at best.

It seems that Hasbro wants to break that trend by focusing on this game as a single good release rather than 'a tie in' to another main franchise like previous video game efforts have been. Let's be honest - The Transformers movie games are little more than merchandise to complement the movie.

If the game turns out to be crap, it will only flop.

The difference between the film and the video game industry is that bad games flop no matter how much hype or marketing power they may have behind them - There are a few exceptions to this rule but way too few to mention and usually not conventional.

I don't think the Ps2 version was released here. Its the same as the Wii one as far as I know. The PSP version was Craptacular I must say. Craptacular with a capital "OMG THIS IS BAD!"

As for good game, I think that Bajo was too incensed by the movie to make a unbiased review. ROTF ps3/xbox isn't the best game, but it is far better than what Good game gave it. I reckon about 5/10 and I have played worse games this year let me tell you... As for the bug, I never experienced that.

I don't like that Podcast. It has deemed my enthusiasm for the prospect of a good story. They seem to be using the G1 cartoon as the only source of story and character ideas down to the 'Decepticons Retreat!' story template. I don't want another AHM abomination in video game form.

I am not sure if its just Gameinformer or the Developers of the game but they sound as if they are trying real hard to be 'fans' when at best they have passing knowledge of the franchise with all their information limited only to the G1 cartoon.

I think they seem fine - they're only making a computer game, it doesn't matter if they can't name any of Arcee's great nephews as long as it plays well. They're not as ignorant as Pat Lee was when he got hold of the franchise and they're better artists. As countless people have said throughout history, "don't worry, it's just a game!" ;)

I disagree. I don't know if you play games but the most satisfying story narratives and characters that I had this decade have been from video games not TV or films. Therefore I expect a good story and hold the medium to higher standards than modern cartoon episodes and even movies in that regard.

If it plays well but has a bland story then its disapointing for me and may as well be multiplayer only. It has to be both to succeed.

the game is a prequel to the G1 cartoon before they arrive on earth

Has this been definitively stated? I know it's been said that this game is set before the Transformer's arrival on Earth, but I didn't think that they had put put this into the G1 cartoon universe.

The current rumour is that this game will tie in with Hasbro's future plans, laying the ground work, and setting the scene for future stories that are too be told, while also exploring a "previously unseen look into the history of the Transformers" (if you forget about The War Within and/or Megatron Origins and/or War Dawn...).

Hasbro's latest round of Q&A seemed to mention that they were looking at properly defining a few of the so-far poorly defined features of TF-lore such as brothers/cousins, after-life, continuity, etc. So looking back on the history of TFs would seem to fit with that mentality, but I personally think that it wil be the history of the yet-to-be-announced new series that they're currently working on for their Discovery Channel venture.

Technically so is Beast Wars but the comics were more than acknowledged in that series.

How canon this game is to the next main TF line is a bit in doubt after the last Pod cast. They addressed it and they sounded skeptical on Hasbro's announcement. It seems that the term 'canon' is being lossely thrown about for marketing reasons.
