Yeah a mergiverse cartoon was inevitable given the movie is the face of TF's today for many kids. I prefer the look of this character to the cartoony look of animated, although I freely admit the look is only a fraction of the package.

That's the main factor for me, the quality of the stories and characters. As mentioned, the movie influence is no surprise whatsoever - Let's hope there is less influence on the characters and story.

Seriously, I can't believe I've spent more money on ROTF than you. :eek: I, unfortunately, paid for myself and my girlfriend to see it (:mad:) and I've also bought ROTF Legends. At least most of my ROTF toy buying was done before I saw the film, but it promptly stopped straight away afterwards! Other than that, I'm in the same boat as you.

But, be wary about dissing ROTF in these parts... you might get your head bitten off!! ;) :rolleyes:

So you are a Transfan then? :confused:

I have never thought the long-term fandom was that important either, but when you put it in those monetary terms it turns out that maybe we are. It means that even if the whole ROTF kit and kaboodle made them about a billion dollars, as a fraction of that, we're actually relatively important. Say I spent $5000 on secondary-market Transformers last year (which is a very conservative estimate.) That's about 1/200,000th of what that film made. And none of my Transformers money went directly to Hasbro or Paramount, because none of it was spent on ROTF stuff, because I didn't think ROTF or its toys were worth spending my Transformers budget on. So from that perspective, 1/200,000 is a fraction which - in the scheme of things - is a lot.

On the topic of the toon, I would think Hasbro would do market research and read the papers and realise that ROTF wasn't exactly a 4 star film. On the other hand characters like Movie Bumblebee are probably among their most recognizable today so yeah maybe we will get a nice crossbreed. Personally I like a bit of movie aesthetics for a change, my beef is with so called script writers and director of a certain film.

So yeah i'll give this toon a chance.

Seriously - we all vote with our wallets. I remember when everyone was anticipating the release of Star Wars Ep II, I was talking with a guy at uni who was whinging about Ep I and utterly convinced that Ep II would surely suck. At the end of his anti Star Wars Prequel rantage, I said, "but you're still gonna pay to watch Episode 2 aren't you?" and he replied, "Yes," at which point I said, "Then George Lucas has your money." -- he conceded to that point. :)

I only have 4 ROTF 'in movie' figures. Two which I bought before I saw the movie and another two which I bought the same night I saw the movie out of impulse at a 24 hour kmart. I regret doing that.

The toys themselves are actually pretty good but I have to say that I very much regret buying them because of my dissatisfaction with the film and most of all the near none existent characters - many were at best animated props.

I plan to sell them soon as I have nothing invested in them and regret the purchase.

On the other hand (and I think it might be kind of what you're getting at, Goki, so... maybe... on the same hand?...), sometimes you have to spend money in order to find something you love. If I'd never shelled out money for them, I would never have known I could love Transformers comics, or Beast Wars toys, or Transformers: The Movie. And sometimes, unfortunately, you have to keep spending money in the hope that you'll still be there when it gets good again: if I'd given up on Transformers comics when All Hail Megatron reached a nadir, I would never have discovered Last Stand Of The Wreckers. Or if... say... everyone had given up on All Hail Megatron, IDW wouldn't have brought out LSOTWreckers at all.

Likewise, the 2007 film wasn't bad - it was kind of a sweet Transformers retelling of Herbie, followed by lots of fighting. I must have seen that Transformers film... like... twice. So I hoped that the sequel would be even better. And some things in it were good - I liked Alice and the revised definition of Seekers, for example. But most of it didn't make a whole lot of narrative sense and some of it was just plain silly. But (to bring this back on topic somewhat) that doesn't mean I won't be watching this new cartoon just because it looks like it might a little bit movieverse. On the contrary - if this series was set in the film universe, it actually stands a chance of fleshing out some of the (robot) characters and making me actually care about them. Which would be one of the best things it could do.

Clone Wars makes some remarkable improvements on the prequel trilogy concepts making them different in feel. Ironically enough, it's easier to take the Clone Wars cartoon more seriously than the live action due to better voice performances, better execution of characters and good stories. It is also less comedic in tone than the live action movies as you don't get ambushed by wacky aliens in every second backdrop.

Anakin also doesn't look like a dweeb who can't act :)

Hopefully this new Animated series will be something like that.

Actually I haven't really seen enough of the Clone Wars series to get much of an impression of it, good or bad.

In my mind decent story and characters are far more important to a series than a movie and should always be given emphasis. A serialized show requires a draw card to get you to come back and keep watching it, and those things are the characters, (preferably) and (but also) or the story. A movie meanwhile can rely on things like effects, adrenaline and frenetic pace and still deliver something somewhat enjoyable as a one off event, but it wont fly in the long run. It doesn't really bother me that someone like Sideswipe didn't get much lines in ROTF, but if he showed up in this new toon for 12-20 odd episodes and did the same I would be annoyed (or at least reminded of G1 Thundercracker :D).

I would have loved Transformers Animated to continue beyond Season 3, but am also happy with how this new Discovery Channel Bumblebee is looking. As long as they keep the writing good, I think the movie inspired look is a good idea. I'll remain positive. :)

ROTF is like this for me, I got a buzz from it the first time, partly because it was a bit of a TF fan event. On a subsequent viewing I relaised how bad it was, however like with G1 I choose to cling to the good nostalgic memories.

As for the toys I enjoy them on thier own merits, Sure the backstory generated for them by the movie isn't very good, but I haven't paid much attention to any of the backstories for Hasbro's new lines since Beast Wars.

Seriously yes, occasionally I might watch an episode somewhere, but thanks to the internet and DVD's I rarely feel the need to go back, there always seems to be something else to try (clone Wars for example). To top it off I don't actually have the G1 series on DVD or any other medium, sacrilege I know. I do however have Beast Wars and a lot of comics though.

I'm really not feeling this design. To me, it's the movie style rendered in the aesthetic of Beast Machines, with a bit of War for Cybertron in the way the vehicle parts look.

Although I suppose that a good part of my indifference stems from 'Oh, not MORE RotF stuff?'. Like the first movie before it, I'm getting more than a little bored with the movie style being everywhere, and it's more pronounced for me as I can't simply go online and buy older figures to relieve this.

At least with the two previous years we had two separate lines so we could collect one if the other didn't appeal.

I will watch this new series, at least the first episode. Who knows, it could be the anti-RotF in terms of story quality. Maybe I'll like the movieverse better.

Story > visual aesthetics. I can easily overlook a design style that I don't like if I like the story. For example I'm not a huge fan of the visual designs for Clone Wars, but despite that I really like the series because I find the stories to be enjoyable.
