View Full Version : Botcon 2010 theme: Generation 2 - Redux (figures revealed)

Still no registration, but the theme has been confirmed as Generation Two.

And a picture of the first exclusive toy has been released: Universe Inferno painted as Autobot Spark (better known to us in Australia as Pyro).

See the picture here http://www.botcon.com/BotCon10/

From 1984 to 2006, Earth was the biggest, baddest battlefield of the Great War. But after the Rebirth, Galvatron and the Nebulan Lord Zarak beat it, takin' the fight to Nebulos and other civilized worlds beyond. Sure 'nuff, Optimus Prime and the rest were right on their afterburners, leaving only a skeleton crew to man Autobot City against future Decepticons attacks.

As we fought across space a new generation of Transformers arose on Earth, boosted by experimental human and Nebulan science and given the spark of life through technology reverse-engineered from Vector Sgima. Ol' Terra Firma
was home to a whole new "Second Generation" led by an Autobot who sees this planet not only as a place to defend, but as the place he considers home!

While things were pretty peaceful for a time, we all know that can only last for so long. And now, through the magic of the Cybernet space cube, the BotCon enhanced stories of the Transformers...Generation 2: Redux!

From the description and the information so far it sounds like it might just be the new Generation Two characters being homaged (rather than the G2 repaints of the originals) but we'll have to wait and see.

I think Pyro/Spark looks pretty cool.

Maybe BotCon Skyquake last year was very popular (I know I loved it) and inspired this?

Surprised at how well the Inferno mould translates to Spark/Pyro. I'm keen to see how the robot mode looks, to see how well it keeps the colours in the right places to still resemble Pyro.

Was never a fan of the Universe Inferno mould, mostly because of the blocky looking robot mode, so if they can pull it off (the robot mode colouring) to distract the eye, I'd be quite happy as well.

With this year's theme and the Wreckers comic both featuring that era of TFs, its no wonder I didn't have a chance on a recent Clench auction (the last one I'm missing from that year's Euro TFs). A loose figure (no packaging) wouldn't have gone more than US$100-150 before this year, but last week sold for over US$300!

Those planning to get non-attendee sets, may have to jump fast on these, if the hype builds on this set/theme.

I usually by a boxed set and a loose set. I suppose this year no different - I'm excited about g2. You can save quite a bit buying them on the member discount. The hassle for me is losing money on the deal after shipping, after ebay and paypal fees, by reselling the set (and credit card interest until it is sold, because they always sell out way before actually shipping). So if there is anyone genuinely interested, I'm sure we can work something out.

Based on past years, its a flat rate fee (40-60). Remember there's no shopping card, its just a registration form. I know the actual postage paid by MC was close to that, but its the club store that is a ripoff for club shipping costs.
So exclusive items like Punch/counterpunch, look to be expensive, as well as the boxed set (if any remain) on the collector site shop.

I'd say we won't know exact costs of the boxed set until the registration forms are up.

It's funny how well these figures have been received by us on this forum. Yet compare our reaction with the reaction on Seibertron and Tformers - they're all up in arms about how aweful, eye-burning, pointless it is!

Is it just because we were lucky enough to actually get these figures? Are the americans just spoiled? Or is it something different?

A lot of people complaining on those boards are geewunners. They don't accept anything beyond 1986.

Another thing is that they are missing the point to what an exclusive is. Its meaningless to those who don't care about EuroG1/G2 so no loss to them. However it's got novelty value for those who know and enjoy the Euro G1/G2 characters. That is what an exclusive should be. It's aimed at an exclusive crowd not for mass appeal.

Well for the sake of balance I'll say these toys are completely painfull to the eye, and they don't really interest me. However I don't really like picking up toys that are expensive due soely to their being exclusive anyway.

Having said that I think this is the perfect sort of niche that convention exclusives should be aiming for, I mean look what's happened recently with fans being upset about Henkei and now Hasbro Thrust. I'm pretty sure Hasbro wont be releasing classics/universe/generations Clench anytime soon.

I think their colors are horrible and painful to the eye but that is why I like them :)

It wouldn't be a good Pyro tribute without that. The point is to represent that era of the toyline and the bright colors are a must as far as the early 90s go.

For some reason some misguided marketeer thought that because the kid's fashion trend during that time was all bright dayglo colors that toys painted that way would be of appeal to kids. Talk about misinterpreting trends!

If it is painful to the eye, then the convention people got the colours just right - those Euro & Gen2 era toys were mostly painful to the eye, so to have a homage to it, we should expect to see some pretty aweful, clashing colours.
Could be worse - could a new character with an ugly redeco...

kup

Could be worse - could a new character with an ugly redeco...

That's really the point. The Euro G1/G2 colors were horrible beyond believe but they are a signature mark of the line. There would be no point in tributing those toys without the garish colors.

The colors are a signature mark and there is the appeal to those who enjoyed the then new characters as its more about The Character tribute than the toy.

To this date I don't know of anybody who likes those colors even if they do like the new molds (which are mostly very good) and character concept.

On the other hand if a brand new mass released toy comes with such colors - then it is a reason for outrage just how Action Masters were in 1990 and those colors were in G2 as it is fundamentally a crappy idea :)

I'm a little bit disappointed that Pyro didn't get a new head. :( To me that was what would have carried the allusion to the character, now it just kinda looks like Inferno playing dress up, which is a shame because the rest of the paint job does an amazing job of alluding to Pyro.

I would have taken a new head for Pyro over seeing G2 Breakdown. But that's probably because Pyro means more to me than Breakdown does, whereas Breakdown means more to BotCon and more of the older fans.

I've been checking the Botcon website twice a day recently for the registration forms, but still nothing.
Today they've put up the brochure though, saying that registration is still some time away.

http://www.botcon.com/BotCon10/disneybrochure.pdf

Some interesting tidbits from the brochure:

Characters and toys confirmed to be in the set - Pyro, Breakdown, Clench, Streetwise, and... Skybyte???

Primus (attending) Package and Iacon (non-attending) Package - US$305 (members), US$375 (non members).
Additional loose set - US$210 (limit of 400, for Primus and Iacon registrations only)

No Guests announced yet (no surprise there, as FunPub have always had it as a last priority element, so often have recycled guests)

Only one pre-Con tour this year, allowing people have the 'extra day' for using the Walt Disney park. The pre-Con tour this year is the Kennedy Space Centre (NASA), which I'll be looking forward to. Costs an extra $110.

So, Clench, Streetwise and Skybyte....
Clench should be a different mould to Spark, as I'd expect Streetwise to have the Breakdown mould, and the pack wouldn't have two redeco pairs. Skybyte... Cybertron Sharkticon toy perhaps?

Sky-byte is quite an odd choice for the set's theme.

Yeah, they probably would use the Prowl mould for the different mould. But the Henkei (Red) Alert version of the Breakdown mould had police roof lights on it, so is still an option if they wanted to cheapen up with redecos.

I wonder if their wording of 'all new colour scheme' for Streetwise means that they aren't having his Gen2 colour (black and red), or just means different to his more known colour of white.

If the former, it could mean that a Gen2 Sideswipe is also going to be released this year, which would be black and red, and they don't want two toys looking the same.

For those interested, G2 Streetwise's colours:

This makes sense. I guess it's an excuse to use that mould or Henkei Red Alert's, otherwise G2 Streetwise is a strange choice of exclusive, since he has relatively boring colours.

And Sky-Byte will be great if he's Energon Sharkticon in Sky-Byte colours... it's intriguing if he's being retconned into the G2 (and thus - basically - G1) universe. I wonder if his motto will be a haiku? :p
