If you pre-order War for Cybertron from a Gamestop store, you get a code which unlocks Shockwave in the game. This we know.
However, if you pre-order the game from Amazon, you get a code for...Demolisher? (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/video-games-17/transformers-war-for-cybertron-pre-order-exclusives-169464/)
Yes, Armada Demolisher is in War for Cybertron, albeit redesigned with the game's aesthetic in mind. I think he looks cool. The unfortunate thing is that these codes are only for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of WfC, although considering how the pre-order content for the RotF game was actually unlockable in the game without the special code, they might just be hidden characters in the other versions.

I'm relatively new to this whole new generation of consoles as I only had a PS2 up until Jan this year when I got my PS3.
Can someone explain to me if I don't pre-order from Gamestop does that mean that I won't be able to play as Shockwave in the game
Surely the code will be available somewhere online or does this require and internet connection for my PS3 as it 'authenticates' the code you use as being valid...
I just want a game that I can insert into my console and start playing immediately.

You probably still can. You'll just have to buy it as part of a dlc pack from the playstation store.
I like Demolisher. Ever since I saw him in Armada I always thought he would be a wicked character for a video game. Laser fire everywhere:D

So in other words, I would have to connect my PS3 to the internet? I am not doing this at the moment and have been hesitant to do so. The only time I have had to upgrade my system s/w was when I bought GoW3 but the s/w came with the game. I understand that I could also use a USB to install; do you think this would work with DLC packs?

DLC packs can only be downloaded from PSN via the PS3. To date, it isn't possible to download DLC from PC yet.

But not without keeping your PS3 firmware up-to-date -> http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=159674&postcount=450
That's not an issue if you have PS3 Slim
AFAIK, PSN also came up with a promotion to lure those offline gamers ONLINE -> http://au.playstation.com/psn/competitions/detail/item272261/Sign-up-to-PSN-and-win/

Kind of off-topic a little, for those that use the PSN, does it use a lot of data? The reason for my asking is that with the DSL plan I am on, I get 7 GB peak and 14 GB off-peak. Quite often, I'll get speed limited towards the end of the month. I'd love to play online, but not if that means sacrificing my internet usage.

There is always a chance that they will put the pre-order characters up as Paid DLC later, like SEGA did with Ryo's Forklift in All Stars Racing, or Soul Calibur which released the console exclusive characters on both systems a while after release.

Browsing the PSN is like the same as browsing the internet on your PC.
Playing games on the PSN however depends on which games you are playing online. Most games is about 20mb/hour. COD4 I heard is about 50mb/hour.
Some of the game demos on PSN will take a fair chunk of data allowance. You will know those games when you start downloading and it would show you how long/many gigs left to go.
PS Home can be quite heavy on data allowance as well. Vidzone (PS3 music app) takes roughly (maybe abit more) than Youtube.
If you are connecting to PSN, Uncharted 2 (once you have done ALL the updates (think it was around 150mb)), is smooth when you are in the game, however game-matching can take a couple of minutes.
7G/14G data allowance would be OK but if you are a heavy downloader, you may want to reconsider upgrading the plan to the next level.

Thanks for the info Saintly.
Yeah, I am a bit heavy on my usage considering most of the shows I watch are not broadcast in Australia however 20-50 MB per hour isn't as much as what I thought it would be.

I think Gutsman has it there, its just ordering from wherever nabs youa free skin. I hope so, coz I like demolishor, but I want the local version of the game for online-i-ness.
I hope it doesnt cost as much though. $8.45 for just Ryo in his forklift? What a ripoff!

Considering these characters are in the game already, just hidden, you will probably be able to get them regardless of whether you pre-ordered it when the code is inevitably uploaded to GameFAQs.

it wont work like that, it wont be a traditional code like old games used for cheats, it'll be a once off unique authentication code, similar to pre-paid phone credit and the like.

+1 This is very useful to know. I'll be upgrading to a PS3 myself later this year when this game comes out.
